Start off with some Painter trickery. This dark inky approach produces my best-looking stuff at the moment, but I definitely need to overhaul my fundamental drawing and painting skills.

Last week's Character of the Week- a Where the Wild Things Are monster re-design. Done in Photoshop over a pencil sketch. Took a long time to do this one, maybe I'll try a somewhat rougher treatment on my next PS painting.

I like the smoking guy with weird glow from his hand, the Ogre and your EOW stuffs. I wonder how long did you make your sketches in average? And the naval hero one? I'm still struggling to achieve the more refined sketches as your stuffs here.

Nice SB! Keep posting :)

Thanks for the feedback.
For photoshop paintings like I have here, it takes me 4-5 days, or 20-30 hours of work. I have found that I've improved somewhat in quality and speed by churning out a bunch of work one piece after the another. When I don't have time to work on this stuff consistently, I can't get into enough of a rhythm to improve.

That's the improvement i want to make right now. But i don't completely understand what you mean by "churning out a bunch of work". Did you mean doing some works simultaneously bits after bits or queuing some works and finish them one by one? Sorry to have you answer a lot of question, I'm new in painting.

klortho
September 8th, 2009, 12:41 PM
Yes, queueing up paintings one at a time is what I mean.
My advice would be this: If you spend a week on a painting and finish it on Saturday, start your next one Sunday, rather than ten days later or whatever.
That's the kind of schedule I've kept for most of the images in this sketchbook, and I have found it helpful for improving basic art skills.

I can understand what you mean about getting into a rythm and turning out work but I felt like when I did art constantly, I would end up getting frustrated and depressed. Does anyone else get like that? I've had to slow down my pace myself because I'm working two full time jobs right now and I also need to spend my time learning web programming also. I try to draw at least 3 days a week and it seems to be a good pace for me although I would like to draw more. Anyway, nice environment paintings. I should really do more of those myself.

I find that because doing artwork requires a good deal of mental energy, I'll do any other task first, even real work :er:
However, lately I have come to think that if I'm not an obsessed drawing maniac, I can't get the skill level I'm looking for. It seems that at some point in their studies, artists who turn pro go through a stage where they go all-out nuts about improving.

great stuff, I love your dynamic poses!!! Keep working those speed sketches, and don't forget, drawing from "live" observation can never be subsituted by refference images. Your direct observation sketches are beautiful!

Only one thing I have to comment. Try to crank up the contrast. Blacker blacks and whiter whites. Accentuate what catches your eye, don't worry about messing it up, that's what sketches are for!!!!

last sequential page is great. The composition is dynamic. Your other stuffs (that i can see, not all your images load, fyi.) are also great. You've improved, mate. Keep it up.

I'm a fan of that first very loose gesture in #152. I think you got a lot of good information in there :)

As for the sequential, I'd like to see a better overall page composition. Each panel has a decent dynamism, but it's much more successful to consider it as a whole as well. Maybe it will evolve when it's inked.

Keep goin!

One Last Ballad
By Itai Rosenbaum
28.7.06

Page 1

Panel 1 - Wide-angle shot of a desert road. It is noon and the sun is high. Driving across the panel at a high speed is a red convertible. In the convertible sits KRIS, she’s young, in her mid-twenties. Her long, red hair blows behind her in the wind. She wears very “rocker”-ish clothes, a white t-shirt with the sleeves cut-off, tied at the mid-drift, low-cut ¾ jeans, with a pair of black All-Stars (though we can’t see that yet, as she sits in the car), maybe a brace on one of her arms, or possibly some tattoos, go crazy. She tops off the look with a white cowboy hat, shading her eyes. She also wears reflective, mirrored sunglasses.

Panel 2 - Close-up on the car’s engine hood, as something inside it breaks down and smoke begins to come out.

SFX (engine): BAM!

Panel 3 - KRIS is bent over the car’s engine, it is, quite evidentially, broken. The car is now blowing black smoke up into the sky.

KRIS: GREAT...

Panel 4 - (A little note: for the next 3 panels I want to show the passage of time, so what we’re going to do is have the three panels side-by-side taking up the width of the page. The 3 panels show the car so that each panel show one third of the car, the first shows the engine hood, the second the dash-board and driver seat, and the third the back-seat and “butt” of the car.) KRIS is leaning on the hood of the car staring off-panel looking for cars in the distance, it is still noon and the sun is high.

Panel 5 - It’s dusk now, and the sky (and entire landscape) take on a red hue. KRIS is sitting in the driver’s seat, her feet up on the dashboard. She has one hand on the car’s stereo and is flipping through radio stations.

RADIO: REPORTS OF--krrzch--BIE’S “FEEL SO NUM--ktzzsh--JOINING ME IS DR. HEN--knnzshff--BUT YOU SEE, IT’S NOT ME, IT’S NOT MY FAMILY, IN YOU--tsssshkzz--

Panel 6 - It’s night-time, and KRIS is sleeping in the back-seat. A big white moon hangs in the dark sky, illuminating everything in an eerie bluish light.

Panel 7 - Morning again and KRIS stretches her arms, yawning.

Page 1: (6 panels)

Panel 1:

Birds eye view. It is late at night and DAREDEVIL is engaged in combat with a group of 5 normal, run-of-the-mill GANGSTERS in a
typically grimy Hell’s Kitchen alleyway. The graffiti riddled walls of two buildings form the sides of the alley and are placed
quite close together to create a claustrophobic feel. Daredevil is planting a high kick in GANGSTER 1’S face, sending him reeling
backwards. GANGSTER 2 lies on the floor, clutching his broken ankle from a blow he took earlier in the battle. GANGSTERS 3 and 4
are charging at Daredevil, each brandishing a knife in their hands as they do so. GANGSTER 5 is picking up a large piece of
discarded wood from the alley floor.

Gangster 1:

Ugh!

Daredevil:

Careful there, gentlemen.

Panel 2:

Tight focus. Daredevil is disarming Gangster 3 of his knife with a sharp, powerful blow to his wrist, shattering several bones in it.
Gangster 3 lets out a tortured scream as the pain rushes up his arm.

Daredevil:

You could

Panel 3:

Tight focus. Daredevil is ducking underneath a clumsy, imprecise lunge behind him from Gangster 4 and his knife. Gangster 4 looks
shocked that Daredevil was able to dodge his lunge, despite having his back turned to him.

Daredevil:

have somebody’s

Panel 4:

Tight focus. Daredevil is now crouched and taking the legs of Gangster 4 out from underneath him with a sweeping kick which knocks
Gangster 4 to the ground.

Daredevil:

eyes out

Panel 5:

Tight focus. Daredevil dispatches Gangster 5 with a strong and firm uppercut into his face. The uppercut goes through Gangster
5’s piece of discarded wood which splinters as it breaks. Gangster 5’s face is screwed up from the incredible pain that he is
feeling. His face almost appears to be crumpling under the force of Daredevil’s uppercut.

Daredevil:

with those.

Panel 6:

Over the shoulder shot. Daredevil watches the gangsters as they flee from him through the alley. Gangsters 3, 4 and 5 are running
at pace from Daredevil and are a decent way ahead of Gangsters 1 and 2. This is because Gangster 1 is supporting Gangster 2 who is
struggling to run with his broken ankle. The pain of trying to run on the broken ankle is too much for Gangster 2 and as such he
begins to cry slightly. This is not necessary visible as he should be facing away from Daredevil, but his pain and sorrow should
be evident in the way he holds himself.

Gangster 2:

*Ah-Huh* *Huh* *Agh*

Gangster 1:

Dude! Are you crying? Man the $#[(< UP!

Gangster 1 (Continued, small text):

You’re making us look bad...

Daredevil:

Hey now! Don’t just single him out. I thought you achieved that admirably as a group.

SFX:
