Hehe interesting ideas Smokken!
I worked on one of your face. I tought it might be cool to have a mohawk/brutal amerindian look and feel for the elf?
I did also a sketch for the human. I had in mind some kind of ranger with medium armor. I was a bit inspired by Robin hood, especially for the hat :).
i think we could give them a grim and dirty look even for the ''good'' version.
For the workflow, i suggest to throw some ideas for the characters for some days, and then we could each work on a different character and different side, and when we are done we complete the portrait of the other. Also it would be cool to do real collabs, painting over each other stuff and not just giving crit :)!
Some idea for the evil version :
-same characters after the black death (the plague)
-same characters but undead version
-demonic versions (possessed)
-Classic evil overlord look
for the style :
warhammer style = lot of small details, belts, trincklets, talismans, runes, skulls everywhere even for the good guys :P, somewhat realistic proportions and look for the anatomy for big armor, not to flashy, but really brutal and powerfull. blood and dirt :)

August 4th, 2009, 04:25 PM
yessssssssssss! freshness! love the details on the human! I gots some blue sky (free sketch) sessions to add in a bit. But I suppose we have to eventually start narrowing down our scope of characters ie: story/personality.
I love the "possesed" idea to get the "evil" versions of our good characters and likewise I whole heartily agree with the pushing the degree of collab as far as we can.
...
just some ideas for story/characters:
Warrior priest: heavy tomes, strung with battle relics and vials of holy powders/liquids/ungents.
Evil version seems pretty cake: loses faith and immerses her/himself in the dark powers.
Elvin Ranger: archaic armor, somewhat organic but with sharp edges. Ranged weaponry, arm mounted crossbows... has pet crow/wolf/falcon (i suppose we should try to steer away from any drizzit (r.a.salvatore) action) earth tones, coppery armor, dull sheen. Work in some feathered costume elements, animal pelts and some antlers.........
Evil version: NOW isnt an "evil" elf an ork or goblin???? well I think we can go any number of routes with a "dark" elf look. Possessed to boot!
also it would be fun to push the "opposites" ie: good versions appear healthy and robust... while the evil are wasting away and sickly (plague) but no less commanding.....
so some more open sketch sessions plus source examples before we pick the characters to begin illustrating, and I say we go for the "good" examples first.... then demonize each others concepts!!
sketches coming

great ideas Smokken!!
hey Ronald, i'll answer you as soon as I got the answer from Smokken!
some ref based on our description for the elf (didnt find any ref for a very ''organic'' armor :( )
I think we should also define something to hold them togueter (style-wise). They are all living and fighting in the forest, but maybe something more than that. Maybe they are each based/inspired by an animal for their look and feel... or maybe they they all have some similar details etc or just really push foward the forest influence ?
also it would be fun to push the "opposites" ie: good versions appear healthy and robust... while the evil are wasting away and sickly (plague) but no less commanding.....
totally with you!!

August 5th, 2009, 05:09 PM
animal refs. I like the idea of infusing animal qualities/features into the character.... and likewise really bringing out the animal in the demon versions... hmm...
in any case Im down with the pumas, ravens, lions, tigers and some baboon action........be fun to come up with faces based off these animals. likewise I included some random elf/ foresty characters.... some j.sweet, v. kovacs and some warhammer action... i think c.kopinski and maybe p.daiton... :P
now to keep these characters togther... are we imagining them on some type of quest togther... ie: lotr.... or just different characters coexisiting in the forest?
... for the elf to try to steer away from the "fair ones" stereotype, and because im def. down with your mohawk suggestion seems like a "punk" elf is on order. Easy to do with the warhammer aesthetic also given the amount of trinkets and belted items we can string on him.... I think the difficult part is being able to give him just enough edge to look fresh but no so much hell be confused as evil. Obviously juxt opposed to our demon version it will be clear as day, but I think we also have to make sure that when seen alone he can still be a "good" guy.

August 5th, 2009, 06:44 PM
heres an idea... what about "elven punk!?" maybe elven warrior punk.... elven thief punk... and on and on.
just seems like that would be a unique aesthetic and ripe full of fresh imagery: ref. japanese eccentric punk style....
also to weave in a bit more story/connection to our human character... maybe hes a bounty hunter.... or enforcer (police) thats tracking down our elven troublemaker....
lil elven teen angst and fighting the man... although he/shes 3 times the age of the human... still a kid by elven standards. :P
just an idea...

drew these a few days ago, but didnt scan them in, partly cause my pencils feel like theyve a little too much weak sauce on the page.... which is only to say that my mind is now racing towards the afore mentioned ideas and really tweaking them into that direction. in any case, today is crank time for some high elven punk action. :P

hai guys moar sketchezzz
I like the brutality idea. I remember studying Beowulf in grade 8 and what one learns from the tale is that "there's good in evil and evil in good". Blurring the line between the good and the evil archetypes could be a good way to break the stereotypes. But I think it's also important to find some way to make the distinction between the two evident, through perhaps the use of colors and symbolism (blue vs red, vile green vs noble purple, skulls vs holy stuff, straight line vs crooked line, etc?).
let's make some epic stuff

wo let's try to integrate that jap punk style into a high fantasy setting
smokenmirrors
August 6th, 2009, 12:25 PM
thats exactly what Im talking about! :P
i was aiming for the eccentricity of the style...
that is instead of "bullet" belts, we maybe have crossbow bolt belts..... instead of zippers.... we use buttons and clasps......etc.
we make it old world high fantasy punk....

August 6th, 2009, 12:38 PM
haha loving these punks, some really nice ideas for accessories.
A bit more tought about the animal symbols idea : maybe the elf could be more associated with all birds (Especially prey bird), the war-priest with all felines (some big and huge lion mane, with a feral look, etc), and the last character related to wolves or maybe monkey (because those baboon in your reference sheet are just awesome haha).
I like the idea of a ''young'' and rebel elf. But I think it would be easier to make them as an united group (instead of one of the character hunting the other). Maybe the war priest is there to ''convert'' the elf to his more powerfull religion? Or he try to learn the way of the wild by living with this elven punk.
I think for now we have a lof of ref for the elven punk-rebel-etc, maybe we just need to find a bit more stuff for the priest and the new character.
For the third character : I think we should do a female. Every high fantasy setting has sexy females :D.
We have a ranger and a priest, maybe she could be some kind of magic user. Not a weak magician, but a real fury, specialised in close-combat using her magic power.

im a bit in a hurry so not a big post of comments (will try to post more tonight)
nice jobs guys, I suggest we try to find a good base for each 3 character for this sunday, so we could start on the real portrait.
I was thinkin Elf ranger = birds, brutal priest = felines, furs etc, maybe the mage/warlock could be associated with reptiles? It could give a nice feminine look, with a lot of pattern, curves and slick look.

nice digi sketch ! I like a lot her headgear and face!
I started something more final for the elf portrait since I think the concept is the more defined. I added some stuff based on smokken's silouhettes (especially the feather covered arm). Was talking with Ronaldliu on msn so I sent him the portait to continue it.
I'll continue to merge our different concepts for the warpriest and the mage. I think these 2 needs a bit more concept job before going to the final of the good version.
I think it's important (and fun) that all 3 of us work on each others stuff. So each portraits will really be a true collaborative work :)

concept I did based on our different ideas for the warpriest
I may try tomorrow to include more feline aspect into his face and look (a more feral face maybe) what do you think guys?
I think we are approaching something fun for the priest, the mage still need some more solid ideas! Maybe to avoid human and elf, the mage could be a nymph/dryad, with a skin similar to the tree's bark, or with flowers and plant on her kness and shoulder, something like this?

you guys are cranking! My apologies again for being temporarily off the grid. But I did get some mountain air so im feeling quite refreshed and ready to rock and roll. Heres some for the warrior preist. Also i know that team thundercats has gone down the animal inspired/hybrid characters... so i think we should be careful how much we go down that route.....

hehe cool stuff guys!
I suggest we choose this friday (14th) as a deadline for a final concept for the good version of the mage and the warpriest. It will give us 2 weeks to do the final 6 portraits. By working in a good collaborative work, im sure we could do it.
Dont be afraid to say wich concept you think is good and wich is not! :)
Interesting silouhettes Smokken, I especially like the priest's weapon and the 3 mage silouhette. Nice stuff Ronald too! This serpent tongue could be a killer idea for the evil version!
I think as long as our character are not half-animal half human, but rather human (or elf whatever) with animal related accessories, we will be different enough of super team thundercats.
I did some head/upper body design for the mage, will scan them after job later. Will try to do some more concepts for the characters tonight.
Also, even if the concepts are not finals, we could start to search for interesting poses for the portraits. Something dynamic but clear enough to see a good part of the design.
Come on guys, I want to see over 9000 concepts ideas till friday :)!!! yes we can! haha

nice stuff guys!!
thanks Adrian!
Smokken, the monocle is a good idea, It gives a more ''wise/scholar'' look mixed with the more wild outfit. I like a lot your second pencil sketch, it gives the impression of a big mane, like a fierce lion :)
Ronald, nice stuff too, her belly armor (first sketch) and left leg (second setkch) are really nice. I like the reptile feet they project.
Maybe the character need a stronger silouhette. the stuff hanging from her hair (Smokken's last digi) could be bigger or longer, with magic talismans instead of just animal teeth ? I like also the stuff going from her body to her arm !
Im not sure I will have the time to draw something today, but tomorrow I'll go crazy and try to help more!
EDIT : Added a sketch I did yesterday. not really interesting, except maybe the beard and the shoulder (but meh, I added horn and it doesnt look like a feline or even a wolf plating.. haha bad idea)

Another iteration of the warpriest, based on Ronald's comments and mixed with the new kick ass sketching by Smokken
Also did a mix of what I thought was our beast ideas for the warlock-mage-sexy girl. What do you think?

Very nice vorace, we should start organizing the rest of the work now that we have the designs defined.
EDIT: So now we can start working on the good characters!
Vorace = elf ranger
Me = mage/warlock
Smoken = priest
just randomly assigned, if you guys wanna change i don't mind
so the first to do now is to come up with an interesting pose and a good composition
Vorace
August 13th, 2009, 11:53 PM
thanks Jessi!!
Ok guys. Maybe we could now each start a portrait. I suggest Ronald on the Mage and Smokken on the priest (i'll do the ranger-elf). We need to find interesting poses for the mage and the priest because right now they are good to show the concept, but rather weak considering dynamism etc.
Maybe when someone as worked a lot on his starting image, he can just put in on a ftp or send it to the other via email. This way it will be true collab, ton of fun hehe! Also it can help if, for example, I know I am not able to work on it for the next days for some reason the 2 others can continue it anyway. I hope im clear uh
smokenmirrors
August 14th, 2009, 01:13 AM
everything sound nice and saavy... but if I may add: i think before we each start on the portrait outright, that perhaps we do a bunch of small thumbs for the poses, and then collectively choose the strongest. Ie: i might do several for the elf/ranger, war preist and even a few for the fem mage. Everyone does a couple, really rough and quick. WE choose the strongest and from there the details and fine tuning can be more indepently carried by our individual team members, till its all just basic detailing, textures and the biz, which as Vorace has mentioned, we can continue to collab. THEN, when those are nearing completion we shuffle and rock the demon sides!!

ive also included another fem mage idea... you ever see the women of Paduang??? Copper rings aroudn there necks from an early age... and adding rings ever year till they have hyper elongated necks that couldnt support there heads if the rings were ever removed...

hi guys! im finally back uh, sorry for not replying faster
Ronald, thumbs number 3 is nice, my fav ! It is dynamic and energic!
Smokken : I like a LOT the idea of the neck ring... maybe they could be twisted a bit so they look like reptile scales or something. There is some really interesting ideas here. My fav is the last of the first row. Really imposing stance, with the cloak taking a lot of space. It go well with the design of the priest!!
I wont be able to work directly on the TCHOW until friday, because im super busy with freelance stuff :(. I will do my best to give inputs anyway and I will start working on it like crazy this sunday or friday.

alrighty: Ronald: lets get your final comp set and in play, focus on your character and pose first, nail it down and worry about the background last (just throw down some abstract shapes which can then easily become simple trees/foilage) Try to getterdone in the next 5 days, that way you have another 5 for the demon side.
also i think we have to be careful with how we light the characters, since they are the "good" versions.... warm colors and nice lighting can help convince that motive...

Holy cow you guys are doing some awesome work. That elf in the forest with the bird is elite. I also like the last one, very dynamic pose, angle and expression on that dude.
Cheers!

ahahah! NICE!
love the demonic meditation stance!
really try to push the "evil" of the priest... be it needle teeth.... glowing eyes.... maybe some horns popping out here and there... go nuts!
...
heres a bit more progress.... going to do another pass, then on to color.
and Ronald: after I finish with my contribution of your rept-fem-mage, do I send it back to you for the final pass??? or am i supposed to polish everything off? hmmm....
let me know!

alright my baguette brigands, heres my contribution to our fair reptile inspired mage...
Ronald: you have the veto power to add or subtract from Voraces and my design/illo changes with your final touches. So do it to it brotha! polish up those edges/details and put your seal on it! :)

one small touch on the good elf i think would be cool. have the crows eyes just as blue as the elves. maybe a little glow to each. it would show more of a connection maybe?just a thought. keep up the good work.

hey gents,
how bout this for a template?? in the shield you can write the character type... and I figure for our team banner a repeat of the skull and baguette cross bones???
also, i can sharpen up the lines..... :P

and I was thinking that the corner triangles, the ones with the baguettes would be opaque with the white...everything else would show the image coming through.... maybe ill break up the black frameing also with some frayed/stone pattern.....shrug. open to other ideas too! :)
