Here Comes
http://wsmisch.com/2k9/TeamMcFlyWEB.jpg
Team McFly!

Here are to rules for us as posted in the Official Team CHOW II thread.
Here are the rules!

1. Teams of two MUST create at least 4 portraits, teams of three or four need 6 and teams of five need 8. You are perfectly welcome to create more images that the requirement if you feel your team is up to it.
2. You must take a random selection of the choices below. Please don't do 4 elven fighters, or only orcs, for example. Please take a randomized selection. If you would prefer me to give your team a specific assignment, I will generate the selection for you. If I see teams doing more select parties, then I will request you to change to something more random.
3. You must follow the format provided. See it below, please!
4. You must do a LIGHT and a DARK version for each character, please! This means that for each character you need two portraits.
5. You must submit a paragraph about each character. Do a short write up for each character you create. I want to see some interesting, stereotype-breaking stuff here, folks!

PLEASE SELECT ONE OF EACH CATEGORY FOR EACH CHARACTER.

Gender: Male / Female

Race: Human / Elf / Half-Elf / Dwarf / Orc - (and anything else you can think of!)

Class: Fighter (Barbarians, Knights, Dark Knights, Brawlers, etc) / Thief (Assasins, Rogues, etc)/ Spell Caster (Wizards, Sorcerers, Druids, etc) / Healer (Priest, Cleric, White Mage, Medic, etc) - (feel free to make up something for this, too)

Alignment: Good / Evil (please do both for each character)

YES, THESE LOOK LIKE STEREOTYPES. IT IS YOUR JOB TO BREAK THEM. I want to see some really interesting, kick ass stuff!

Okay, NOW GO!

--------

SUBMISSION GUIDLINES

The Final Burning Thread will go up ONE WEEK before deadline. The deadline will be August 31st, at 11:59 pm GMT - 4, Eastern Daylight Time. I will accept submissions as long as it is August somewhere in the world, but after this I will close the thread. I am going to give myself 1-2 days to then sort out the poll and the voting, so please be patient.

1. One team member will be in charge of submitting the final entry. How the entry is presented will be up to you, but keep it consistent and coherent.
2. Remember that you will need to submit wips. If you decide to make a group sketchbook for this activity, a link to that will suffice.
3. Also sumbit a list of Team Activity. I want to see how well you worked as a team - who was in charge of what and what each member did.
4. All other ChoW rules apply. If you are not familiar with the usual chow rules, please read the guidlines thread sticked at the top of the subforum. Including, 3/4ths rule, no paint-overs, etc.
5. Please submit files with this naming convention: TeamChow_TeamName_Image001.jpg
6. Please keep to the format of the image below. We're gonna be a little bit more strict about presentation this time - each portrait should be portrait-aligned, like so, and the figure about as big as the one you see below. Full bodied figures, please.

Thanks, and Good Luck!

ahh, this will be fun. What genre do you guys want to do? I think it would be fun to place all these characters into the jungles of South America. Or maybe a Western. Just gettin the creative juices flowing :). Oh, and you may have put this in the wrong section. try here (http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=156)

I think jungle sounds pretty sweet! not sure how well western would work since I think we sort of have to stick to 'high fantasy'

Hi guys, jungle sounds cool but I'm not 100% sure how you see it. I think it will become clear when I see some references and inspirational pictures.

Oh, I also made some quick scribbles. Nothing big, just getting loose :confident.

I was thinking of more of a tribal look. It would be fun to give an orc/elfish twist to the Aztec, Mayan, and Incan cultures. Like adjust the clothing and armor of that time and place to fit that "high fantasy" style.

Key elements seem to be: body paint, face paint, feathers, fur, and bones. Also, notice they all have relatively the same skirt shape. There are a lot of crazy headdresses, but I bet they are meant for ceremonial purposes. I think It would be cool to have a Shaman with a crazy headdress. Also, do you guys want to have thematic colors, like turquoise for good, red for bad? Thoughts?

Lyno
August 3rd, 2009, 02:46 PM
Oke, sounds cool :). I think we shouldn't have thematic colors, (it can be oke, but it's not necessary for me I mean), but the color schemes must fit with each other.
I suggest we collect more references first. I think by tomorrow night we could have quite some references gathered. And then we can make sketches (or value sketches) first to decide which figures to take?

Goog
August 3rd, 2009, 05:08 PM
Niiice man. Love the skull on top of the weapon, great touch. Only crit is that the shoulder pads need a little more detail, maybe some of those square stones or nubs or spikes. The body type is spot on too, goes great with the character. Also, I can easily change mine to a human or elf, as I was planning on putting a mask on him anyways. Then again I might scrap it and start over :).

This is fun already :).

Sublimus
August 3rd, 2009, 06:00 PM
Thanks for the input goog!

Im not sold on this guy per se. So don't feel like you can't do an orc. Im probably going to try and sketch at least five different guys and take the best.

Goog
August 3rd, 2009, 06:02 PM
aight man cool beans.

new sketch: Female/Dwarf/healer. If I pursue this concept further, I think I'll add more plants, berries, flowers, etc. I would imagine that healers in the jungles know a great deal about the local flora.

Edit: new sketch Elf/male/archer (if that wasn't obvious)

August 3rd, 2009, 07:48 PM
Dang goog! You're killing it!

Some crits though.

The proportions of the drawf seem off. She looks too tall. I did some quick transforming to show what I mean.

And mind the hips on that archer, they look weird. It may just be his belt thing though.

Do we want to get into animal people? It's a slippery slope, but hippo/snake/toad/jaguar people might be worth exploring.

Nice goog nice, keep things coming :D.
I'm not sure about this one. It is supposed to be some assassin scorpion/elf. I tried to integrate some assassin attributes like daggers and stuff, but I have the feeling less is more with this guy.

You guys are rocking it!!! <3<3<3<3

I've got a frog guy coming up soon!

EDIT I got some crits for you guys. On both of your sketches, they sort of look like 'humans with a few animal parts'. For example, on Goog's its a straight normal human torso, with *plop* a straight jaguar head. However, goog, the feet are amazing! They are a delicate mix of both human feet, and a jaguars. And Lyno, I think you could find a more interesting way to have multiple legs, or at least make the legs look a little less human. That way the scorpion tail would integrate better because if all the parts of the body looked a little more scorpion, that tail will fit right in!

Hope that wasn't too harsh, but I think we can take these a step further, rather than just human + animal head! :D

Sublimus
August 5th, 2009, 09:12 AM
Here is my humble attempt at a toad animorph.:D

(I was tempted to splash some color, but I think it might be a bit early for that!)

Haha, I just noticed mine sorts looks like I just polpped a head on too! :nohope:

Lyno
August 5th, 2009, 09:36 AM
Hahaha nice subli :D That's a cool one :). No worries about the crits, they are very helpful. You're right about the legs, I was planning to make them like the legs of an scorpion (or crab, something like that ^^).

Goog
August 5th, 2009, 10:11 AM
haha, yeahdont worry bout being harsh. In fact, I thought the exact same thing about my guy right when I finished him :P. Your guy is great too though man, love the crazy forearms. Also Lyno, yours is looking good too. I thin kmy next sketch is going to be some sort of troll-ish charachter with really long arms like a monkey!

Sublimus
August 5th, 2009, 10:18 AM
YEEEESSS DOOO eeeet!

(I was going to do a beast master guy with a monkey!!)

Goog
August 5th, 2009, 03:11 PM
aight, monkey orc/goblin

Sublimus
August 5th, 2009, 03:30 PM
Hahaha! YES!

Now here's the challenge. How do you make that character look good??

Goog
August 5th, 2009, 03:35 PM
actually, I think it would be relatively easy, just give him a more relaxed stance and a friendlier face :).

Sublimus
August 5th, 2009, 03:55 PM
Okay. Here's a human/ good/ beast master. not sure he fits into the theme as well as some of the others.

(And in case you're wondering, yes. That's a cape made out of moss :) )

Goog
August 5th, 2009, 04:14 PM
Rock solid design man, It'll fit perfectly, just give him a lot more mayan/aztec decoration, and maybe a ring of triangles (body paint) around his right thigh. Also, the moss cape would be hard to pull off in a convincing manner, maybe make them colorful feathers. Seriously though, your best so far imo.

Goog
August 5th, 2009, 06:15 PM
elf/female/evil/shaman. There's still many different details I think needs to be added to this to make it more complete.

I think I may do 1 more concept, but I'll probably develop this concept or the monkey concept further, depending on what you guys choose to do. I want to get to painting.

Sublimus
August 5th, 2009, 11:17 PM
Thanks for the tips on mine goog!

Yeah I like this one too. But I think the nose is a little too goblin/orc to read as elf.

How about we set a deadline for all of us to have a character to take to final by friday. Then we can spend most of the next week fully exploring our main characters/coming up with the other version (good v evil) and tweaking the design. Then that gives us like two more whole week to paint the finals.

Is that agreeable guys?

Cuz shit, I still want to draw a few more guys! :P

Goog
August 6th, 2009, 12:32 AM
haha, you don't have to follow when I paint, just I have alot of things to get to in the next week or two, so I'd like to get mine done a little early.

Lyno
August 6th, 2009, 05:01 AM
Hi guys, I think I can have certainly a final bij next Wednesday. I won't be able to work further this friday/weekend/monday.

I hope this is okay :)?
Great concepts you two btw :D

Goog
August 6th, 2009, 10:56 AM
yeah man, its all good. So I think I'm going to do the elf woman shaman concept. I have many ideas for it.

Goog
August 6th, 2009, 04:54 PM
Decided to start with only the body, I'm gonna add all the details on top of this. BTW, I don't know if I'm gonna stick with this concept, just lemme know if either of you guys want to do an elf/woman character. edit: just realized I need to fix an issue with the rib cage.

Lyno
August 6th, 2009, 06:17 PM
Great start. The eyebrows, cool detail :D.
You can do a elf/woman, that's good for me :). I think I'm going for a woman/assassin, but I will work out some more concepts after the weekend, (Tuesday that will be).

Minor thing, isn't her right underarm a little bit too long, just a little bit though :D

Sublimus

Nice one dude! Would it be wrong to presume you changed her from evil to good in the process of drawing to painting?

no, you would not :). I was feeling out what the good character would look like.

Here's some quick colors on the other dude.

Goog
August 7th, 2009, 03:25 PM
still wip. I'm having trouble making the body paint look like body paint on the orc. Any suggestions?

Lyno
August 7th, 2009, 05:11 PM
Do you mean how to paint some body paint in a realistic way? Maybe you can try to use the blending mode "Overlay"
Or, when I think about those orks, I think they don't really mind how body paint is painted. I mean, they just put on some strokes, not much completed, paint made of grass/mud or blood, things like that.

I hope it's somewhat clear :D

Sublimus
August 9th, 2009, 12:27 PM
Nice work Goog! I think if you just did a bit better job of showing the form with the paint color it would look fine. Right now its basically a flat shape on top of a form with variance in tone. Mimic the variance of the form underneath with the paint color and you'll be golden!

Here is a quick little warthog/halfling/barb

[edit] plus a little color slap on the beastmaster.

Goog
August 9th, 2009, 06:43 PM
Nice start on the colors there man, careful with the perspective on the horns though. Both you were spot on with the tips, its starting to look better. I think I'm going to start on the good guy before I finish this one, I've got some ideas which need to put down. Still, definitely some things I gotta fix on this one.

Goog
August 10th, 2009, 05:47 PM
update.

Sublimus
August 11th, 2009, 10:36 AM
YEAH!

Sweet stuff! I think it was a good choice to switch up the colors on the bag version (assuming you're going to use those nicer looking teals on the good guy). You've changed up the face quite a bit on that guy too, but Im not sure the latest one is the best. In terms of expression, I think you had something really solid when he had the yellow eyes. I do like the face paint on the latest one though, its very primal.

I like to good version too - good start. But it sort of seems like you didn't carry over some of the key characteristics of the other one. he evil one has REALLY long arms, like almost silly long (but it works). The good guy has almost normal length arms. The evil one is a good mix of orc and monkey, but your good version looks more like a mix of human and monkey (with a tiny splash of orc). Now I know orcs always look evil, and you may have been trying to play that down, but if so I think you went a bit too far.

Other than that, you're putting the rest of us to shame! :yayca: I'll have and update today for you guys!

KEEP ROCKING DUDES!

GUYS!!

Sorry I've been MIA for like a week! Been a bit busy with work, and preparing to go to GDC Austin in about a month.

Goog: That's the hot shit right there! The proportions in his legs seem a bit weird though. Like the upper leg is too long, and the lower leg is too short. Makes them look a bit chubby. But don't get me wrong, that one fucking ROCKS! The expression on the face is tops.

Alright, So Im back in the swing, but this update is a baby one, just to let you guys know Im alive!

Tiny update on the beast master (shameful I know). And a possible bad variation of him. I'm not too sure about it yet though.

Sublimus
August 19th, 2009, 10:20 PM
Nice one lyno! I think you should sit down and really figure out how that head dress works though. I'm guessing those are feathers coming out of the top, and if you really sit down and figure out how they work, they could really sell the design!

Goog: I guess try and calibrate that, bc it shows up black for me. Seems like its the new monitor that's off.

Here is a quick portrait for the evil guy. I like this a lot better.

Lyno
August 21st, 2009, 01:56 PM

Goog

Sub: Right on! great face. keep pushing it, deadline is approaching!

Lyno: Great piece so far, really makes a wonderful impression. As for the skin tone, it already seems very yellow. Still, I would think she might be more tan than yellow, living in the jungle and all. As for the face and hair, Just do a bunch of rough sketches, you'll figure out something that works. For the hand, maybe have the hand on hip pose, or resting gently at the side? Idk, thats a tough one.

Lyno
August 24th, 2009, 05:37 AM

Please let me know If you guys are okay with this. It's no problem if you want the snow be removed or something.
Also, I was thinking we can put the characters next to each other for the presentation.
I'll try to finish my characters by tomorrow because I won't be available Saturday.

Looking good guys, keep pushing those designs! Beads, bracelets, boob rings, etc!

Yeah so here I am at school (Ringling), and godamn, there is a whoooole lot more work being given out here than I thought there would be. I don't know if I am going to be able to work on mine further :(. I'll probably be able to do some sort of short crit sesh saturday though.

Lyno: the ears on the bad lady don't read too well. You might want to do more of a slight bend, as it stands now the last half of the ears look very floppy on the bad chick, while on the good chick, they appear rigid.

Lyno: not too sure about the snow, since we're going for a jungle thing. Unless you can sort of find a way to mix the two. i don't know if that exists in nature or not!

Goog: Yeah, I know I need to push my designs; they are sort of lacking. Good luck in school buddy! Im sure you'll do well! Considering how shitty i was when I started school, you ought be pro worthy by the time you graduate!

Yeah Sublimus, you're right, but I was thinking about the Inca's, living in Peru. In the snowy mountains. But if you guys want me to stick with the jungle theme, let me know.
For the good beast master, take another look at his skull, it looks like it's out of perspective. Other then that, things are looking great :D.

Thanks Goog for pointing those things out, good luck man :).

Lyno: the bg in the good version is hot shit! Overall though, they both sort of have big heads and hands. In fact, they are sort of all around blocky. I think you could infuse more femininity into both of them.

Here is my latest progress. Might be my last update tonight. They aren't 'done' like I was hoping for. I still need to do more work on the actual designs of most of them...

WEEEEE! :mod:

Nice update Lyno.

Okay guys, we need to start thinking about our final submissions.

We all need to write our paragraphs for our characters, and we should try and keep our dimensions uniform too.

Goog: should we use what you posted last as your finals, or do you want to upload a different image?

We're almost at the finish line!! Let's finish strong!

Hi, I made this little description for my race, not very novel like ^^.

Descendants from the ancient civilizations of South-America. Survivors of the conquistadors all rejoined in the jungle, forming a enormous power to establish a balance for nature (and mankind?). Therefore this race is very group based. Those not willing to make sacrifices for nature are castaway to the higher mountains where they are up to their selves to survive, not having the advantages of the group. There are story's though of outcasts who diverted to the dark powers to survive.

We can also put our chars together like this:

Nice way of integrating your story with your bad guy background!

I paint all on one layer, so it might be tough to eliminate the background. I'll give it a shot once Im done though.

Ok, but no worries if it doesn't work :D.
Euhm about the submission, now it's almost 21u, so 9 P.M :D. I don't know how much time you've got left?.
Is it possible I post or send you my finals so you can put them in our submission thread or are you almost done?
