So, what I had in mind is something in the way of the Greek myths. With the blending of Gods and mortals. I think that gives us a good amount of fantastical freedom. We can create something as grand as Gods or the gritty mortal heroes who stand by them. Another idea was the "messengers" of the Gods. A type of demi God creature thing that would visit the humans and do the particular Gods bidding.
So, by Gods I mean any thing. Most of the old old religions had Gods for everything under the sun-so our options are pretty much limitless.
I dont know if this sounds interesting to any of you- its time to brainstorm! its going to be rough because we are on such different time zones, but this thread should help!

TEAM CHOW II: GOOD AND EVIL
DESCRIPTION
This month's Team Chow is going to be a little different! This time, we are creating fantasy portraits for player characters - with good and evil versions! It's both a wide open brief and a very strict one! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a random team from the options given to you below, and to create 4-8 fantasy portraits that read well together and still look awesome separately. Thus, as a team, you must create a compatible 'look' for your characters.
ConceptArt.Org is going to be running game design activities and it is our hope that some of these characters could really inspire people doing activities on the other parts of the site too! Fuel for their fire so to speak. :]
Also, Jason has allowed me to offer you some fabulous prizes!
The winning team will get four downloads of their choice each and a pass to an upcoming live streaming course right here on conceptart.org!
Also, individuals within teams are also up for a prize! These will be given for leadership, and for extra effort in making great characters. This prize will consist of four downloads and the pass to attend ca live streaming event.
On to the nitty-gritty:
Here are the rules!
1. Teams of two MUST create at least 4 portraits, teams of three or four need 6 and teams of five need 8. You are perfectly welcome to create more images that the requirement if you feel your team is up to it.
2. You must take a random selection of the choices below. Please don't do 4 elven fighters, or only orcs, for example. Please take a randomized selection. If you would prefer me to give your team a specific assignment, I will generate the selection for you. If I see teams doing more select parties, then I will request you to change to something more random.
3. You must follow the format provided. See it below, please!
4. You must do a LIGHT and a DARK version for each character, please! This means that for each character you need two portraits.
5. You must submit a paragraph about each character. Do a short write up for each character you create. I want to see some interesting, stereotype-breaking stuff here, folks!
PLEASE SELECT ONE OF EACH CATEGORY FOR EACH CHARACTER.
Gender: Male / Female
Race: Human / Elf / Half-Elf / Dwarf / Orc - (and anything else you can think of!)
Class: Fighter (Barbarians, Knights, Dark Knights, Brawlers, etc) / Thief (Assasins, Rogues, etc)/ Spell Caster (Wizards, Sorcerers, Druids, etc) / Healer (Priest, Cleric, White Mage, Medic, etc) - (feel free to make up something for this, too)
Alignment: Good / Evil (please do both for each character)
YES, THESE LOOK LIKE STEREOTYPES. IT IS YOUR JOB TO BREAK THEM. I want to see some really interesting, kick ass stuff! :D
Okay, NOW GO!
--------
SUBMISSION GUIDLINES
The Final Burning Thread will go up ONE WEEK before deadline. The deadline will be August 31st, at 11:59 pm GMT - 4, Eastern Daylight Time. I will accept submissions as long as it is August somewhere in the world, but after this I will close the thread. I am going to give myself 1-2 days to then sort out the poll and the voting, so please be patient.
1. One team member will be in charge of submitting the final entry. How the entry is presented will be up to you, but keep it consistent and coherent.
2. Remember that you will need to submit wips. If you decide to make a group sketchbook for this activity, a link to that will suffice.
3. Also sumbit a list of Team Activity. I want to see how well you worked as a team - who was in charge of what and what each member did.
4. All other ChoW rules apply. If you are not familiar with the usual chow rules, please read the guidlines thread sticked at the top of the subforum. Including, 3/4ths rule, no paint-overs, etc.
5. Please submit files with this naming convention: TeamChow_TeamName_Image001.jpg
6. Please keep to the format of the image below. We're gonna be a little bit more strict about presentation this time - each portrait should be portrait-aligned, like so, and the figure about as big as the one you see below. Full bodied figures, please.
And thanks so much to Zhanglu of Massive Black Shanghai who created to help get this contest get off to a great start!

-=GUIDELINES=-
Follow the Character Brief to the best of your ability.
What this means: The Brief is where you find the details of the character for the given week. Often times there will be tidbits of vital information included in the Brief that you will not find by going just by the thread header.
Why: As CHOW is in part designed to give you some real world experience in character design, you are encouraged to read the brief and do some research on the character that week when necessary. Briefs vary greatly from assignment to assignment or client to client in a job situation, and so to here in CHOW.
Art created *only* for this activity will be accepted.
What this means: This means that CHOW requires you to create original artwork for the given week. Paint overs of other people's work is strictly forbidden.
Why: CHOW is about pushing your limits as much as possible. You do not benefit in any way, shape or form by copping out and submitting work that has been created previously for something else (either a personal project or for a client).
Furthermore, paint overs (of artwork or photographs) are viewed very, very dimly by the hosts, and are considered cheating.
One Entry Only.
What this means: One entry per entrant.
Why: While we encourage prolific illustration, it would rapidly get well out of hand for orchestrating the poll, therefore for our sanity, and yours; One entry only.
Minimum 3/4 character must be visible. No busts or head shots.
What this means: A three quarters view of a humanoid character is required. Head shots, or busts, are greatly admired and some of the best artwork every done has been done in this style, and they can convey a great deal about the character being illustrated. However, in CHOW, character expression is expressed through so much more than just the face. The stance, position of arms, hands, accouterments, costuming design all help convey who the individual is that you are illustrating.
Why: Mostly because we want to see you can do. How well can you illustrate the human form, or any other form for that matter? Further to this is how well can you express an emotion through that form?
Background imagery NOT NECESSARY unless indicated by the brief.
Otherwise feel free to include it.
What this means: Include a background image or not. It's up to you. Unless the brief says otherwise.
Why: Backgrounds are not the focus of CHOW.
Color or Black and White.
What this means: You can work in color or black and white.
Why: Both color and black and white can be very powerful tools of illustration, and each artist uses them differently.
Any medium is accepted, except photography.
What this means: You can submit work that is created digitally, or traditionally. However, photography is not accepted.
Why: CHOW is about illustration, be it on a computer or canvas. Photography is not illustration therefore not accepted.
However, sculpture is accepted because it is done by hand.
No sketches for finals - we want finished work, just like the rest of the Weeklies.
What this means: Finished work is a fairly relative term. Review some of Wes Burt's or Marko's work (or John Singer Sargent for that matter) to see drawings that technically are sketches, but would be accepted in CHOW.
Why: For our purposes here, a sketch is a unfinished thought. A drawing (including artistically unfinished ones) are a complete thought - either completed by the artist, or by the viewer.
Remember: Focus your illustration. Pay attention to anatomy, shape, form, lighting, etc. USE REFERENCE.
What this means: Too often beginners try to do everything. Don't. Slow down and THINK about what you are attempting to convey - what you want to say. Look critically at what you are doing, and why you are doing it. Don't just throw everything into the picture including the kitchen sink just because it's within arms' reach. On the same note, don't use a every color on the pallet just because it's there. Color conveys emotion. Fewer colors will have a stronger impact in the illustration.
Why: You illustration will have more impact, and therefore stand a greater chance of going to poll, and getting votes if you know what you are doing. If you're not sure what you're doing, or how to do something, ask someone or experiment first before just throwing everything into your final.
On using reference: Reference is considered to be typically the use of an object, person, animal or location in photographic form to study so that you understand how to illustrate said object, person, animal or location. In regards to CHOW direct copying is strongly discouraged, along with paint overs (taking a photograph into photoshop or painter or other program and using a layer on top to either smudge or trace the photograph in part or in whole, regardless of whether you own the rights to the photograph or not). In fact, using someone else's photograph for your own artwork, or elements there of, is considered plagiarism and is forbidden in CHOW.
Please include accurate copyright information when submitting your entry.
What this means: It means that we'll need you to tell us how you are filling out the copyright form when you upload to the CA attachment manager. This means name (usually if we're not sure, we put it under the username, but you may specify another), image catagory, sub catagory, genre and media.
Why: Because of the new attachment system, we need accurate copyright information in case your image is posted anywhere else with regards to chow. (For example, the winner's thread.) We can usually guess, but it is much easier (and accurate) if you simply provide the information along with your final burning entry, and we will be requesting this from now on.
Ken-Do-Pu-En I guess < ---haha Pooo'en That's hilarious.
n Sweeeeet.
Well, let's see what we got here.
I know sepu wanted an Egyptian theme too.
My mind is dancing around future themes and twisted characters,
but like I said to sepu, it's all about adaptation, and I'm all for pushing myself more, even if it makes me cry.
I've always wanted to try out demi-Gods and God of Pancakes. whatever ever.
How about whatever theme comes up, but we move it into the future, or different Universe.
Parallel characters or something sci-fi, but we'll add magic and stuff just to keep to the fantasy theme. wooo

Ken-Do-Pu-En it is! hahaha!
I think I might just have my mum mail me my old CS2 legal stuff... I need photoshop so bad!
I am all for anything that evolves! I guess we can do sci-fi fantasy...? Im not entirely sure! We need some references for mood and characters, start your sketches! Do we want to go for a realism? Or something stylized?
This will be interesting!
dwardo
August 2nd, 2009, 11:04 PM
Interesting indeed. sepu's asleep
vshen is a noob when it comes to forums. [buahahah]
Hi George!
[Can you re-install CS3 trial?] and run for another month?
I'd vote for inbetween realism and stylised.
edit:
Let's all start collecting images we're interested in that we can apply on a theme
that we decide on.
So far.
Greek Mythology
Egyptian Mythology
Futuristic Mythology [donuts eating people]
For me, anything works, as long as we can put some human traits in there.
1 questions I'd like to ask into this theme, that we've yet to decided on, is;
What makes us human? It's pretty much what all mythology revolves around, no?

Lol, and I am going camping for like 3 days this week!
we'll see how it goes!
I am going to get some cs2 later this week.
I will stick to pencil sketches for now.
I would vote for something in between too.
Hmm. your philosophical question is a complicated one!
What makes us human-The biggest frontal lobe, ability to stand, and a thumb!
Philosophically it might be our need to understand-thus the making of Gods and
such. because we cannot understand it all.
I will work on some picture compilations tonight,
for now a sketch with the future Egyptian alien thing. No greek... but maybe some rune stones?

Hi Lindsay :teeth: hallo!
Awesome Awesome Kenneth. I'll drop these sketches in and try working using your moods and characters. I saw a few of those same pictures, but for some reason, it didn't tickle me fancy. In this big group, however, it's a whole different feel.
Lynda says Hi from another dimension.
Sirkenneth
August 3rd, 2009, 03:20 PM
Yo, dwardo-I just saw your mood pics-AWESOME. We are on the same wavelength. I am into the green/ blue un-saturation. More mood. If you google images Waterhouse paintings you will see a mood I really like.
Another thing we should figure out is some kind of story. We are so all over the board we need to tie down to some basic story concepts.
dwardo
August 3rd, 2009, 03:23 PM
I would never have found Waterhouse if you hadn't mentioned it. A lot of fabrics and flow. That's 5 weeks of rendering time if I were to get with it. Bahahaha. [I'll update this post with something useful laters.].
Sirkenneth
August 3rd, 2009, 03:32 PM
waterhouse just has a nice cold pallet with a few strong colors-especially red. We dont need lots of cloths-but the pallet is something I am into.
Also-for everyone else on the story section this is what we roughly have thus far.
who-Gods? magicians? Mortals?
where- distant universe, everything is made up
when- in an age where science and fantasy mix! How exciting!
why- maybe a disease, war or some other intense time of trial.
Something to give our characters tasks.
lets hear the 4 W's of the story from everyone.
sepu
August 3rd, 2009, 03:44 PM
I was some time ago deep into shadowrun (google it!) where story of our world getting mixed with fantasy begins with: "one day charter flight from china to japan saw dragon flying alongside"
who - mortals dealing with gods
where/why - border mountains between fighting countries - this would bring at least two main species(elf/dwarf kind of species I mean) together
when - we are looking for mythology inspiration? then logically I would go for roman/greek/egyptian/sumerian/etc empire kind of setting
dwardo
August 3rd, 2009, 03:47 PM
Sweet guys ... now I see more directions. :teeth:
Shadowrun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun)
who-Hybrids of God/Magicians/Humans/Peanuts
where- distant universe, everything is made up [check]
when- Kali-Yuga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali_Yuga)
why- It's the switching of emotions. A new way of thinking.
The world is too ravaged to keep on going like this, and the mind is questioned once more.
It's always a battle of good and evil, and it starts from within oneself.
edit:
I love the W's Kenneth and Sarah.
Perhaps, we should aim for like 60 characters or something, tied in by parallel Universes :teeth:

Gotta agree that I love Waterhouse palettes. I'm not sure what can be googled, but if there is any question about any of that, i have a book of his work that I could scan in a pinch.
I await an update from dwardo on what y'all have discussed so far, and am reading through the thread here in the meantime and attempted to rack my brains as well. ttys
Edit:
Who: Liking the mortals and maybe demi-gods dealing with Gods. [and eating peanuts]
Where: shyah. a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.
When: but not actually a long time ago, I'm digging the sci-fantasy. Just maybe with a Greekish vibe?
Why: the gods are at war, or maybe building up to war (between each other), and they are engaging in major sabotage towards each other's followers/realms. This could include all sorts of catastrophes, plagues, natural disasters, mortals in dispute and upheaval, etc. Peanut uprisings.
EDIT II, the sequel:
Okay, and just to get a sense of what everyone is imagining, a question... Are we looking at such things as Greek mythological creatures in a sci-fi setting? The normal fantasy genre type creatures in a more.. ancient Greece feeling world/clothing/weapons? A mix of maybe some Greek creatures and the more typical fantasy creatures listed in the CHOW descrip... in maybe a more sci-fi-ey world with Greek or Roman influences?... Just. trying to jumble some things around in mah head.
vshen
August 3rd, 2009, 06:29 PM
Man you guys are fast!
who: I like the hybrids of God/Demon type creatures/Can Robots be involved in some way?
where: distant universe is good
when: Futuristic but with ancient oriental elements/influence maybe even greek
why: possession of a powerful element/artifact that gives the owner limitless power (very LOTR).... or maybe disagreement on who would win in a fist fight between optimus prime and megatron?
Will reference hunt during the day and squeeze some quick sketches.
dwardo
August 3rd, 2009, 06:37 PM
I reckon anything that's cool Lindsay.
Sarah had Egyptian mythology in the mix also, so I'll start looking at the feels for that.
[I'm a noob when it comes to Fantasy, but would love to do any type of hybrid creatures]. Your faun idea had me thinking of other animal/humans combos.
It's easier to follow what's already set I guess, we'll just have to tweak it a bit, like, moving it into the future, or even just a century forward/backward.
Edit:
Hi George!
Robots Robots? Sci-Fi Fantasy ??? I'm not sure though, will have to look into it further.
Sirkenneth
August 3rd, 2009, 06:42 PM
You aim too high! 60 is too much! Unless they are all going to be peanuts! Besides we want quality not quantity-Both preferably.
Colors? (http://images.google.com/images?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&q=waterhouse%20paintings&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi)
4 W's thus far....
Who- It seems like we are all liking the demigod stuff. Demi means half God half mortal so everyone knows. Now if we could focus on a couple possible "races" either generic or more out of box. Thats the next step.
Where- I Like Sepu's idea of the mountains in between waring nations, in a galaxy we have yet to name or really describe. (prolly dont really need to) Can we work out what kind of mountains these are??
When- I would imagine a late middle ages era- where the science of the renaissance was not quite full swing and there was still lots of mysticism about everything. Like the Greeks also. They had their science and they had fantasy too. Allows us some creative leeway
Why: So we want this linked to the Gods (as that adds fantasy) but the focus would be easier on the demigods as we can include mortals and actual social things into the drama. We seem to be into the war idea. Gods were always blamed for making the Greek wars so we have a nice tie in there. If the characters are inbetween the demigods and the mortals then we can add the sci-fi (gadgets of the mortals) and the fantasy too. Plus war is always exciting! Does this sound good?
Sounds- The rough blob like idea thats in my head right now would be something like Greekish demi Gods (very active and prominent in mortal life) Almost too good to be real heroes, mixed with a more clumsy race of mortals. Kind of like men in middle earth. I know they wanted us to break stereo types, but I dont want to go too over the top. I think two races of "men" like characteristics would be the easiest to deal with. As far as clothing and era goes- I like the empire idea that sepu had. distinguishable armor patterns and empire like society. I dont really know though...
-IDEA- I just thought I would throw this out there: If we can decide on say, two races. Then we break up into two teams. Within those teams we have someone designing the demigod and their good and evil, and another designing the mortals with their good and evil. We could then switch teams and edit each others designs to have a bit of cohesion in style. I dont know if that sounds good to the team or not. Just thought I would ask!

*brain just exploded ... still reading up on Mythos and cool creatures, but yea
that reads about right Kenneth.
wiki list of demi-gods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_demigods)
3 members working on the demis ... 2 for the humans ??? It could work.
Sirkenneth
August 3rd, 2009, 07:05 PM
Dwardo- Yeah I like your idea. What is more important? I think I agree that 3 should be on the demis and 2 on mortals. Mortals will have the cool sci fi gadget type things. Maybe in the context that the Gods have given them or that they are relics. Going with vshens idea. eh? eh? That might be our only way to realistically incorporate something robotic or sci fi.
the demigods could have gadgets too, But generally they are just cool and powerful. More magical.

vshen
August 3rd, 2009, 08:35 PM
If that's the case sepu.... are we treading too much into sci-fi if we go for a futuristic theme? is it more safer to go into an ancient, medieval theme to make sure we are on the fantasy area?

August 3rd, 2009, 08:42 PM
We're looking at High Fantasy here, but I don't mind if you blur the culture lines a little bit. ;] But no sci-fi, please. As far as style goes, that's totally up to your team. But try to keep it in genre.
this is the bit I understood to be NO for sci-fi
Sirkenneth
August 3rd, 2009, 09:00 PM
Okay, it looks like sci-fi is out.
So, we will be back to the brass tacks of armor concepts and clothing.
Time to do more reference gathering! Go go GO!
EDIT:
I did a little research and it helped out quite a bit. High fantasy is a pretty particular thing. We are on the right track already but everyone should make a quick overview on what high fantasy consists of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fantasy

oooo, yes yes Sarah and Kenneth. Awesome Awesome. Little ideas started to run around.
They're tickling each other, laughing n crying. Like a summer rain. ??? :P
edit:
I'm ready to go and explore more on post #44 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2373230&postcount=44). Keep on playing, keep on shuffling things around.
Who - demigods and humans n neutrals. demigods of greece vs demis of egypt?
Are we doing titan demis vs titan humans?
I'd like it to be titan demis vs common humans. [No Hollywood ending; This game you'll never beat].
Where - Mountains , bridges, paths. A transitional location. Portal to an Oasis. A dance floor. A battle floor.
When - Yes to that one in post #44.
Why - Conflicts are always nice. Story as to what they're fighting for can always mirror how it is now. Justifications for survival over another. Any reactions can work.
A cool looking battle scene? or reality of conflict depiction. [No happy faces].
oooo, Are we doing 8 characters or 10?
---Switching - I'm not too sure about that one. I'd like to fully flesh out
one or the other and make the other race pay. hahaha.
I was thinking we can switch every now and then, with little adjustments added;
but the majority of work will be done by the same members. Yes/No?

OKAY I had a brainflash that I needed to dump on you guys real quick.... Then I'll be gone for around 30-40 minutes and then on for most of the rest of the day/night
Somebody earlier said something about robots, which was an idea that scared me because... I'm not used to it. This is what CHOW is actually for is it not? Let's push our boundaries...
Why couldn't our good players be more organic, more Greek-myth like... .and the evil versions have veered sharply away from the organic, to the point where [as dwardo was talking about in earlier posts] they are losing their "humanity", their... whatever made them them... and if not fully robotic, at least very much meshed in extreme body modification of the cyber-sort.
Just something to think about, I will come back and read the stuff you guys have been posting in a little while, because I see that you have posted today XD
dwardo
August 4th, 2009, 11:14 AM
Oy, Liz don't get too excited about the robots.
No sci-fi was decided in the brief. They would've been sweet to do indeed, but we can always try some hybrid of some sort. Just get their background stories developed along with it. mwah mwah.

August 4th, 2009, 12:52 PM
I'm feeling better about the no sci-fi thing, because last night I kept thinking that they might not be cool with that in the mod thread. Besides, I was starting to feel all mushy in the brain area about how some stuff was going to be incorporated... but never mind since it's a mute point now anyways.
I'm going to start some sketching now, I'm liking some of the thoughts/sketches floating around... And KenSIR I think the Waterhouse is spot on... That would be my usual palette as well, so it seems like at least a few of us are extremely comfortable with that.
As for the switching thing.... I'm feeling dubious about that, but I can see where you're coming from. I think maybe if we just kept showing each other WIPs when we get to designing, and then do brief paintovers and then let the initial artist decide what to do with it, that we might get things done a little faster? Then again, the thought of switching it up a little bit here and there and working on a different perspective might be refreshing for the whole team. Okay crap, I've just muddled myself into indecision LOL
As for the races, it said specifically in the rules that we need to have more of a random smattering... So I think that we should pick more than two, or the mods may force us back to the drawing board. And I think a couple of them should definitely be more... stereotypical High Fantasy fodder, such as elves/dwarves? And then have... whatever else we were thinking of, like I was thinking of a Faun, and I keep seeing some cool Minotaur looking critturs in posts in here.
Anyways. That was my brief two cents, now I'm going to go sketch and wait for the man to come fix my air conditioner *CRIEs* it's literally ninety two degrees in my apartment right now and 90% humidity. blah.

What I've gotten done in approximately an hour... I'm debating a whip, or maybe some kind of flail or mace? Depending on what the primary weapon would be, he might have a dagger or something.
Just kinda fooling around with shapes and stuff, I need to research goat legs and horns.
Dude. he looks like he's about to start a DANCE FIGHT :anime:
Edit:
Also, looking back through and thinking about the mountains thing... I keep picturing them being like, big, difficult to pass/live in type of mountains, Himalaya style. Which makes me keep picturing a lot of harsh weather/snow and very warm clothes, as opposed to the more drapey and light Greek clothes... Almost more like Mongols? Dunno. Just throwing stuff out there. It would give us something more in the way of armor/weapons to look at. And even more of a reason for dispute and quests and stuff like that... you really would have to fight to live in a place like that, and resources couldn't be taken from someone else without a huge conflict starting. *shrug*

1 demigod
1 dying human
2 hybrids - Linds' Faun and Sarah's creature from the portal.
1 neutral/assassin/war monger
In the bad lands. The base of mountains that hug a coast line.
Summer or Winter?
Kenny, are you taking the human character route?
I really want to do some type of hybrid/ some kind of monster.
Forget the neutral for now, but something to think about I reckon. [well, I've been thinking about it] :teeth:

Wow! How to catch up after all of this! I was at school all day!
Great work folks! I was thinking about it all day!
I dont know where to start!
Firstly-great drawings and ideas!
switching- silly idea. Just giving solid feedback on each others WIP would be good.
I think its good that dwardo is trying to get the races figured out and dished up. This needs to be the forward steps. We can always work out the infrastructure kinks later. So I will jump right to that topic.
I am okay with the number but my suggestion would be:
1 demigod for the 1 dying man race
1 hybrid race and 1 demigod of the hybrid (so the demi's can fight?)
1 neautral character. maybe the minotaur race, or monster kind of race. Just killing what they can. Like animals. I dont know how they would fit into the group photo though... hmmm
I like the idea of dwarves, probably more so then elves simply because I think elves are over played.
I dont mind doing the man race at all! Anything works for me! I want to draw some sweet armor.
I think summer would be more fitting if we stick to a greekish theme. And location- mountains might be too extreme. I like the coastal idea, and I would throw in a forest idea or perhaps a valley. The battle valley. Often old armies would choose locations to fight, and they might fight there several times, not so much in Greece but other parts of Europe. Maybe around a fortress??
I am going to assume I am working the man race and will start some drawing. I will post later tonight with some goods!
AWESOME WORK!!
edit-posting a helmet concept- kind of trying out some animal like concepts. input??

Sweet George.
2. for the mobility in those legs, try overlaying any of the organic brush over them for more variations.
3. for that hair-do and a floater.
6. for arms as legs. the movement when animated will be freaky asz shit.
8. for the demonic stance.
7. those stranglers are always bad ass.
After the competition I want to model and rig some of our characters out, and do some Z-Brush passes on them.
Texturing sucks though, but whoever wants to try out the 3D side with these assets, it would be sweet, no? :teeth:
I'd love to learn along with you guys again.
Kenneth: Oh shoot, I forgot you were doing the human. :P
Mate, do whatever you want with it actually. I want to see your bad-assery.
I've forced you to make one look weak. If he was standing up straight with a big gash on on his abdominals though
and he still has a bad ass face, that would be something. :D
[Sarah, am I typing too much?] hahahaha.
The headgear is cool, I missed the details on it. Sick sick sick.
[You got to share your construction method] [Everyone check your email addys]

Anyways-- Like the helmet actually, it made me think of these poor little mortals trying to give themselves some courage and a badass look for fighting minotaurs... or . something LOL
And yes, I agree that elves are highly overdone. I was always more of a dwarf person myself (being six feet tall, I have so much in common with them). I will start working on the dwarf and look into some armor/clothing/weapons kind of things.
I'm also digging the summer... maybe the mountains are coastal? But mountains would be ideal for a dwarf now that I think of it.

And I was thinking [*jabs dwardo*] that the dwarf would be, for starts, plain ol' good and evil, since that is the main objective I think for the CHOW. Once I'm finished with the main two charas/two alignments, if there is time I think that I'd really like to try my hand at a shifty neutral. I just know that I suck with keeping deadlines in mind, so I'd like to make absolutely sure that I finish the others first. Still like the idea though.

Those silhouettes are delicious sepu.
-I like the firestarter horse face. Anything bright will read nicely from a distance.
-Multiple limbed guy can definitely give Kenneth's human some problems. [How do you defend it, right?]
In terms of anatomy, there's nothing glaring in my eyes, probably just
the upper chests. Keep the muscles/fat below the collar bone.
Everything else are just little tweaks. I'll give them a run through ASAP. Good stuff girl.
The most important thing, for me at least, is a nice silhouette, something that will
read nicely from afar, even without all the details.

Fresh from the weekend:)
sepu: I'm digging the minotaur, like dwardo said chains are a bit short but I'm thinking if you could play around with the horns and kinda go more than the standard two horns and probably have more elaborate designs or just simply make them more bigger that there is no way his head can carry it but some how still does.
sirkenneth: I really like your sketch mate, I was thinking for his evil side he could have more angular sharp armour to contrast with the round shapes that he currently has now.
Anyways this is my quick sketch and will work on this idea more.
Also was wondering after the challenge is over are we allowed to post these in other forums?

vshen: I dig the long limbs and scraggy hair, or is that fire hair?
The rules for this comp, are the same as the regular CHOW, so we should be cool to post elsewhere. cool cool everyone.
Lindsay: I hope your broken hand and cut eyebrow from the fist fight is healing up ok.
Stay well girl. No more fighting K. mwah mwah.

Sepu- Thanks! Here is the idea that I have so far for his bad side. Do you think the good side looks good? What other changes or improvements can I do?
Dwardo- Thanks, I didnt really count him out. I think most of his weight comes from the cape behind him. The dirt is just my crappy scanner and not having photoshop yet! Glad you like it though.
vshen-thanks, I am digging the monster so far! Keep tweaking.
Here is my bad side beta. I was thinking-instead of doing just a "bad" side and changing his armor that I would throw in more story. Providing we go with a minotaur monster idea- I thought it would be cooler to have my fellow be "enchanted" or something of that sort. Where he changes half way into one and eats babies and shit. The idea was scarier than another muscle guy with armor. What do you guys think?

-Yes to crazy eyes.
-Hybrids I always like, the posture could be affected by it also. Transforming posture??
If you figure out a way to bring those pencils into Photoshop and keep
all the textures, that would be awesome. All I can think of is setting the pencil layer as multiply. Colour layers underneath. lol to pasta loving baby arm. hehehe.

lmao broken hand and cut eyebrow? ...somehow that doesn't sound as far-fetched as it should. =P
I'm here at work uber-early so I can get some sketching done in peace and quiet tonight, I've been tossing around ideas [not other people] in my head all weekend. ...I wish I had some peanuts.
Guys, stuff's looking awesome I gotta say, all of it. :rocker:
AND I have to say that I'm enjoying the pencils idea that dwardo mentioned. That used to be my painting method, just putting the pencil layer on multiply and going under it/around it. Though I'm not sure if everybody is comfortable with that? dunno. I'ma go play with my purty pens and paper now!

dwardo
August 11th, 2009, 11:44 PM
heehehehe .. I was hoping it would be. They're a bit tall actually. Let's make your human twice the size of the anitos.
I'll look for my Braveheart CD. Tis a bit scratched though. ha!
Hi Sarah George and Lindsay.
edit:
Kenneth: Your latest human looks worn down, weak and ready to fall. He'll be eaten alive by my minotaurs no problem. But I like it.
Your armor detailing thus far has been sick as, but if you say he can call upon enchantment, then bring it. They love a good fight.
Sarah: I never noticed until I was playing around with your minotaur, but there's some rendering in there that are sweet.
Very nice indeed. You'll have to teach me one day.
Lindsay: I'm sorry, it was the orbital bone right? You just have to learn to control your fists man. Not everyone wants to fight like you.
And your faun is the comedy relief for this game in the making, I'll try and match it with a Prince (cameo character).
George: Bring the sexy back. I like the long limbs. Weird colour skins perhaps.
In terms of characters, I don't mind working on the anitos, if, we can fit it into the theme/timeline/universal era.
I had a trying time doing this minotaur, but I think I'm ready to do another one, they pretty much have the same
structure as the fauns.
Are we going for very the graphic feel, lots of colours and 80s clothing, or are we up for some serious, functional fist fight gear?
Keep those ideas flowing. We're a bit behind on schedule, but eh, this is everyone's first time doing fantazeeeee.
Sirkenneth
August 12th, 2009, 02:24 AM
Dwardo-yeah I dont think my poor human would stand a chance at all! I like your rendering of it though-very creepy. I like what you are doing with the minotaur, and I would recommend working on it more.
I will make the human younger and healthier. No worries. He will stand a fight, until of course he gets possessed and starts eating babies.
I would prefer no 80s clothing but thats just my own opinion. I can draw it!
How about everyone else- what creature are you do want? What style or visual theme are you happy with??
Here is one WIP of three "color" schemes I am going through. I will also change up the armor a bit in the drawings to come.
I also posted a possible scale.... eh??
We should be in our pre-production phase now so lets kick some bootay!
dwardo
August 12th, 2009, 02:45 AM
Yes to that scale. The minotaurs are triplettes btw. I'll start making them look different.
Kenneth: I like that lighting a lot. The armor looks new, but don't worry, they'll smear blood on it. ha
And I'll keep tweaking them out. Their torso looks suspect, but I kind of like the lanky-type.
I really don't want to give them weapons, but I'll start playing around with them tonight.
SirKenneth: Human/ with bersker-enchanted mode
dwardo: Roving minotaurs or anito (troublemaker spirits) - just raw characters. No sugar.
sepu: Minotaur/dwarf/magic makers/witches/clerics/ ???
AmbientSounds: Neutral but shift characters/faun/Sculptor-magic maker ???
George: Supernaturals/Monsters ???
Summer mountain, with patches of forest.
I'd like an arch bridge in here somewhere where we can pose our characters under.

hi everybody :)
to bring something usefull until I install photoshop on this new machine let me remind You of something written down very clearly in topic thread:
1. (...) teams of five need 8. You are perfectly welcome to create more images that the requirement if you feel your team is up to it.
2. You must take a random selection of the choices below. Please don't do 4 elven fighters, or only orcs, for example. Please take a randomized selection. 5. (...) I want to see some interesting, stereotype-breaking stuff here, folks!
Class: Fighter (Barbarians, Knights, Dark Knights, Brawlers, etc) / Thief (Assasins, Rogues, etc)/ Spell Caster (Wizards, Sorcerers, Druids, etc) / Healer (Priest, Cleric, White Mage, Medic, etc) - (feel free to make up something for this, too)
YES, THESE LOOK LIKE STEREOTYPES. IT IS YOUR JOB TO BREAK THEM. I want to see some really interesting, kick ass stuff!
so... lets decide what we have in mind.
so far I see nice ideas:
1. anito / otina (if you gonna make them as scary as japanese horrors I will f*ing run away, promise!) ?
2. knight / possesed horned freak (nOice)
3. minotaur berserker (THAT is why chain have to be short guys :) / minotaur healer(that was my idea of good side) or... minotaur hula dancer
4. dwarf good shaman / dwarf poison maker
WHAT ELSE? :)
dwardo
August 12th, 2009, 03:24 AM
What else?
How about a race of Tom Jones. Crazy fro waving every which way, leather skin looking tans.
Character board.
749975
-Otina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otina) : They're snails Sarah, relax. hahaha. But otina is perfect also. Something like an exact opposite of these trouble makers. A perfect name to yin yang anito.
Thank you. Feel free to mess around with these pale skins KDPED.
-"THAT is why chain have to be short" .... :redcheeks: :embarrassed:
lol hula dancers is saved for the side project.
Who's trying out horses. Lindsay? Texas? I know you've tamed your first horse at 2. Up for it? I wouldn't mind doing it. Kenny? Sarah? George? =)
-I'm not too fond of healer characters. It's a semi-cheat thing, like a Hollywood ending.
Who's writing the story for this one now. Kenneth, is this the original lineup you had in mind. lol.

I actually like never draw horses. never. not so sure I can learn and be good at it on the spot just now :)
what I really like, but it is stereotype kind of thing, are all kind of freaks and priests and warriors from ChaOs side. chaos dwarf magic making lady is not so much stereotype breaking stuff. or is she?
:)
dwardo
August 12th, 2009, 04:56 AM
sepu: ChaOS, is that a Warhammer reference/keyword? I'm not a gamer or a fantasy reader lover, so these are all new to me. My head is about to explode at any moment. [Googling. Nice lead indeed].
I'm trying to render a limp horse that my minotaur has by the left hind leg, but it's not
coming out too well. I didn't know horses were this hard to draw. hahaha.
Kenneth:I dig those berzerker eyes, but how about no eyes. Just black holes.
Just a few more hours and I should have some free time. woohoo
sepu
August 12th, 2009, 05:04 AM
dwardo - give me some idea of what you need from this horse and I will render some sketches for you of horse-to-be creatures to brake stereotype :) cannot draw horse, but something looking like it have horse in the family is thing I can manage.
or are You very much into this horse business?
dwardo
August 12th, 2009, 05:38 AM
sepu: Thank you. I was actually thinking of a plain horse, but a centaur character
that's limp I wouldn't mind. I'll send some construction lines and see if anything rattles in your end.
The more that I think about my characters, it feels like I'm reaching for the Silent Hill type of audience. I liked all parts 1-4.
I've not finished any of them 'cause they're scary as shiet, but, well, that's where my mind is at at the moment. Scurry stuff.
Scurry fantasy. Scurry faces. Scurry baby hands.

Wooo! Some discussion-NICE!
1. anito / otina (if you gonna make them as scary as japanese horrors I will f*ing run away, promise!) ?
2. knight / possesed horned freak (nOice)
3. minotaur berserker (THAT is why chain have to be short guys / minotaur healer(that was my idea of good side) or... minotaur hula dancer
4. dwarf good shaman / dwarf poison maker
1-Not totally sure what this is.... sounds neat though.
2-got the knight covered. We will just call him a warrior.
3-I like Dwardo's wolf minataur, looks creepy.
4-As far as the dwarfs go-I think if we give the minotaur magic abilities we should make the dwarfs more simple. I would say maybe one who fixes things, and one who breaks things. ALmost like grimlins.
5-DEMI GOD. thats the only thing I ask is we have some kind of half God.
Story line- we can make this all work, I am sure. The men are in a loosing conflict with the minotaurs. They ask for a demi god to come help them. Anitos (sound kinda mean) work for the minotaurs while the dwarfs just try and fuck things up.
It seems like the dwarfs and the anitos are in the same kind of "in the middle" range. You guys got any ideas?
I think we should focus on the story, and the concepts for the rest of the characters. The man character is pretty well worked out (he is the easy one)
but we need more progress. I can draw horses well enough...when did horses show up?!
Everything is going sweet! Thanks guys! and Girls!
I am going to work, wont be back til tonight.

lets turn it on the frying pan once more time :)
what if anito are cooperating with humans and dwarfs
while otina are little bad guys bringing half divine bad ass bad huge minotaurs to actually help them to rule/destroy the world that banished them from civilisation?? good minotaur can be summoned by good side in desperate move to even the chances on the battlefield?
story will be that war originally is between anito and otina, and because of recent escalation of magic used in fights, it started messing up humans and dwarfs (possesed ones started to appear!) so they decided to got involved to finish this mess?

Tiny war drums are starting to beat in my head. I like all the ideas that have been dropped, and these stories make it much more clearer. Sweeet.
SirKenneth: The anito are from Philippine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anito) Pre-Hisp. mythology actually, I didn't actually think you guys would accept it, but eh, why not. hahaha. The anito/otina was Sarah's clever word play. A balance. Yin Yang.
I just think of them as the commoners in the mythological world, and as with everything else, everyone, even spirits can have motives that drives them.
Thumbs up on the commission, make it gooooooood. Don't come back before you do so, that's your name out there. :teeth:

Okay, I figured I'd post what I'm working on tonight while I'm at Barnes and Noble. I have some sketches in my notebook, but no scanner presently so I'll just stick with the headshot I've started.
Basically the faun character turned into a "fawn" character in my head. It's no longer a he, but a strong she with deer legs as opposed to goat legs. (dwardo, any resemblance to Natalie was a complete accident, but something around the eyes is making me think of her LOL) Instead of goat horns, she is going to have small deer antlers, and having deer legs would be perfect to use as a scout/light fighter.
In my head, she's pretty haughty towards the plain mortals. I think maybe something of her breed is generally aloof anyways though not unfriendly, but she personally has had some past dealings that has led her to believe that her race is superior... The fact that she has lowered herself to fight alongside humans at all shows that the circumstances of the world have fallen quite low.
Anyways, I'm still in playing mode for clothes/weapons. But as to her turning evil, I took the shift toward minotaur and have mentally run with it. Her horns will become strangely curved and made more heavy, as if they are trying to turn into minotaur horns; she'll have a large ring in her nose; armour, though probably still light...
Anyways. Dabbling. But thought I'd post because I've been pitifully quiet lately, and I apologize. :)
EDIT: LMFAO I love the dwarves being almost like gremlins thing. I want mine to be the one who breaks things! XD Er. Actually I'm equally partial to either one of those (I love fixing things lol) I'll play with that too.

Ambient: I reckon with hair. Braid(s) hmmm I don't know.
Split in two or one back? It's always in the eyes anyway.
If the eyes are right, she could be wearing a bikini and it'll work with me.
She's looking nice, even when bald.
I like the light/swift fawn, and I really love the morphing antlers idea.
Somehow your short little worm strokes seem to work in my eyes.
I can't pull it off though. I think it's your lighting. Sweet sweet.
Sepu: I love the details. This horse thingy looks solid for that dwarf.
And are you really going to keep that back rest? :P That is so mean.
The back legs are buckling already. lol.
Which reminds me.
1.Is everyone doing their own backgrounds/environment? [Which is optional btw] But I'll work to however yous want to for cohesion purposes.
I'd just like our goods and bad to be worked out first. Environments/background if time permits, true?
2. And if there's more time, and everyone isn't sick of it. I'd like to do a meal scene. Everyone is eating. Looking up from the table, or not.
/sketches later tonight.
Just throwing it out but I still like your fawn to be bi-ped.
n some perspective squashings and lightings. Please double check seps.

dwardo, nice... I think after this contest I might play around with the entire deer body sans head plus woman torso. What do you mean worm-strokes? EH? Are you threatening me?? What am I a clown? Am I here for your amusement, do I make you laugh? Laugh like how? [lmao lady why are your knuckles bruised?? *BOOF* that's why] And I had forgotten that backgrounds are optional. Honestly I'm not very comfortable with enviros yet so I'm going to do all of her first and then with time permitting add some scenery. But I -had- planned on the scenery. ;)

AmbientSounds - thank you :) those claws are my fav too, makes it some hybrid animal, so I can make all possible mistakes with anatomy saiyng "this is how it is supposed to be!" :D :D :D
but really, it makes me feel this animal have some lion in the family.
can I play like dwardo - with your faun lady?
beware! one question coming: while demigod job is to be.. demigod, human is good plain warrior/berserker, anito/otina are magic by nature and troublemakers by proffesion, minotaurs are warriors, my dwarf is some kind of battlefield-mountain-druid-wannabe (and im planning bad side to be really bad ass XXXS size necromancer) - what is your faun ..?
that will make it easier to play with it now if you will assign for her characteristic already. for now I only know she is thinking herself superior, which is fine but didn't we all think like that? :) give her some nice job in this story :)
AmbientSounds
August 15th, 2009, 10:40 AM
Haven't really thought too deeply into the story yet, was just trying to get a little bit of a feel for her background thoughts. I thought I would have her be a monk/preistess? of a nearly dead religion. She very idealogically inflexible and very rigidly good. (Please, play away with her)
I think the reason she would be evil (since we are supposed to make an evil portrait of the same character) would be that she mistakenly thinks herself SO morally superior and SO religiously fervent that there would be no way she can be corrupted... So she messes with some kind of dark minotaur magical item, thinking she can control it (for the good of the world or the group or whatever) and it twists her.
Edit: maybe the nearly dead religion she is head of had a huge goal of beating back the minotaur and they have failed horribly (obviously LOL). So she has a major grudge on many levels. Her fighting style I'm thinking is going to be very hand to hand and light. Um. My brain's still working I'll come up with more :P But in any case, she would definitely serve as a scout for the group.

Thanks for helping me get my brain going lol, I have a full day to work on this exclusively and I wanted to give it as much attention as I could.

I'll play around with it 'cause I feel his pain. haha
-Just wanted you to know they're triple z'ds, maybe give her a bit more rib cage and
take out that space in-between the right arm and torso.
oh sepu full bodied figure only, sorry. I've been glancing at everything, such a doozy.

AmbientSounds: Just have her occupied by something else on the side or back.

Looking good everyone. <3
SirKenneth: I'm trying to think up of postures to surround your good guy with.

It sucks I know, but I'm still going to do it with one of the triplettes.
[Don't tell, but It's the same character, just with a few differences here and there buahaha]
When a brown bear knocks at your front door, you'll be surprised how 'nimble' you actually are. Trust me.

We'll get back to you on that one Linds, but front on looks to be the case. For now.
Maybe just a slight side would be acceptable.
gaaah, if I could, I'd make one minotaur hanging upside down a tree just to see if I'm able to.

Poses.
Ok, as per example with the final CHOWS that I've seen, and going with one (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=156660) of trevor's CHOW threads - 'Team Zaxxon Chows Down' any of
those poses would do. Full front, or turned slightly to the side.
Ambient: I reckon your current head is ok, just not the crouching/hunching at the moment. [blaaaah, I should've made sure of it. Sorrieeez].
Since I've got triplettes to play with, I think I can get away with it, as long

The two remaining will see that psycho demigod. The golden one. That's a cheat character right there. hahaha. But alas, the minos will take him/her out.

Sepu:Buahahaham thank you for those keywords on masks Sepu. Much much appreciated. [I really have to learn and see more. Seriously]
Those bird like masks could be a nice soft touch to the minotaur's faces.
Ugly scary faces. Perhaps they secretly would like to fly away one day. [Cliche.]
Snow snow? Perhaps that's the transitional weather in the story where the demigod (evil) finally appears.
Great opportunity for illuminated characters/assets/magic and where the dark lighting will play tricks on the gamers.
(Like the Silent Hills. I scared myself silly. The ambience helped a lot too. The official soundtracks. Superb.)
Kenneth:The current anitos will probably stay like that. I'll see how much I can push the evil versions. There's no happy characters in my games man. Sorry. hahaha.
-off note:
The anito's skin, especially under the chin and chest area have animated textures much like an amoeba insides, which, the Unreal Engine 3 can handle. So this idea isn't too far fetched, for my part. Texturing wise. :teeth:
Animated with a super duper AI script that changes the colours depending on

Nice start to the avo (afternoon) :teeth: :P
In terms of boobs, if they're not heavy (leveling the bottom of the sternum (http://images.google.com/images?client=opera&rls=en&q=sternum&sourceid=opera&oe=utf-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi)) there shouldn't be that
much fat all around and they become more cone shaped, don't hang as much and tighter to the chest.
If they are heavy, they'd be more rounded (like you have now) but hanging lower
with most of the weight below. Profile view they would look like tear drops hugging the rib cage.
Niplay pointing direction, think of a balloon filled with water hugging the slightly oval shaped ribs. (top view)
The smaller, the tighter the angle (from top view) and they point more forward.
The heavier, the greater the angle (from top view) almost an acute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angle#Types_of_angles) angle.
The shape of the rib cage will give you the direction/position of the niplays, but there's
a few different species amongst us, so take it as a general rule. My general rule. :hahaha. o.0
I'm not sure how the Russian system figures it out. (Kenneth?) :teeth:

I got to say, that pose is one of the banes of my art so far Ken. It kills me nicely.
But do keep working on this armor as we try and figure out that pose.
-If his knee was bent that high, then an angle has to compensate for it. So the foot would be in front of the other and on a higher ground.
-If he's standing straight leg, it looks to static and you'll have to adjust the shield angle.
-So a compromise is the only solution. The third one. Wood.

I'll try and play with it once [ if? ] I get rid of this migraine. ...Actually I don't think I'll need to, it looks like dwardo hit the note on his top picture. The higher foot just needed to be a little farther forward I think and the foot direction changed only slightly. It might look somewhat like he's resting that shield on his knee, but hell that thing has got to be heavy. :P Otherwise the lighting and armor is looking really tight. (and I mean tight as in badass and not tight as in overworked. ;) ) The palette I've had thought out in my head should go really nicely with what you've already got down, so. bonus.
sepu- aw lol  I'm curious as to what your dwarf will look like in evil mode. >:F
vshen- that evil dude needs to see a dentist in a serious way. Likin' the head tentacles too, I just noticed that. I've always said it would be much better if we were all just floating heads.
dwardo- get to work you BUM. [ ] and stop stealing my frikken hot dog vouchers. The next time you see a hot dog and go for it, you might find out that it's on the end of a big pointy stick. [ I wonder if I could catch eagles that way? ]
