I've been lurking about here for 6 months or so admiring the work and attempting to glean some of these skills for application in my own area of design.

I'm an industrial designer and have a huge amount of appreciation and admiration for this site and the people posting to it. Unfortunately, there isn't a similar forum related specifically to industrial design as it applies to products/consumer goods; seeing the development sketches of recognizable objects is very cool!

So this is my attempt to reciprocate (for those few who may be interested) and show what type of work I do on a day to day basis.

This particular project is for a low cost
television set top box.

Note: Not sure this is the right place for this thread, but these sketches are as finished as they'll ever get.

UPDATE: Here's an image of the final product; please note, the remote is an existing product pulled from inventory - not my design.

O wow this so cool... i myself am applying for an industrial design major at RISD... this is very cool!

I was wondering, does indutrial design specifically revolve around consumer products, I read that people like Feng Zhu whos working on the Episode 3 majored in industrial design and now works with creating environment, vehicle, etc. concepts. I really want to do that aside to doing just consumer products

ID certainly DOES NOT specifically revolve around consumer products; the flexibility of the training is the best part of an ID education. While I'm sure the influence that Star Wars in particular, comics and scifi generally had on myself in my youth is shared by the vast majority of others here, I found that my childhood love of drawing, combined with my enjoyment of sculpture/model making and things mechanical primed me for a position closer related to the product design end of things.

Charger: these are concepts for a low end satellite receiver, meant to complement the higher end receivers in the product line.

Thats cool, yea if i get accepted i think that industrial design is the closest to what i ever wanted as a major. Thx for your reply I really admire your work.

Do you use prismacolor markers or copic markers to render your work?

Tools list:

2H .5 mechanical pencil (harder pencil lead doesn't smear under the marker)
Tria Cool Gray odds
Sharpie
Pilot razor point or fineliner I/II
Prismacolor white pencil
Plain bond copy paper

These are quick sketches (15-25 min per) meant to get a thumbnail idea of the form and function across.
