Hey CA, finnaly finnished this piece of fan-art. Started on it one week ago, as a planned 19th birthday-present for myself. But due to a week's vacation with my family I havn't been able to work on it until earlier today.

Blizzard currently has a fan-art contest, and this is my entry - entitled The Dark Wanderer
Those of you who have played Diablo II might recognise this. Enjoy!

Done in Photoshop, process can be seen here - http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=163802

No comments on this yet? Shame, it's a pretty good piece, oodles of atmosphere in it. The life and mana bowls in the lower corners are an especially nice touch :)

Good work! Its good to see integration of not only the game style but also the gameplay elements in a fan art :)

Well done on the brushwork as well!

laxon - Thank you very much!

Gax - Thanks!

goblin4hire - Thanks, I am a fan of the gritty look myself, but it's hard to get the "less is more" feeling in a piece.

Badaboom - Haha, I know. I'd definitely do something about the frame and Diablos horns and work the wanderers cloak more.. due to tight circumstances I had to submit the piece before I went to bed (timezones and deadlines don't work together) and couldn't sleep on it.

Walnut - Thank you!

That looks so awesome!!! So wonderful colours and lines and everything, you have such a unique and beautiful style. The flames are... gorgeous. Fascinating.
Great work, man, I wish you good luck in that contest! Remember to tell us if you win ;)

I'm with everyone else the atmosphere in this is great. Very Diabloesque! With a deadline this turned out very well.

Critiques:
I think that if you wanted to improve this I would consider the composition. Since you have made it very symmetrical with the mana and life orbs, I think a little more variety in the middle might provide some interesting play. I like that he isn't standing square in front of us, and this could be even stronger if you were to make just his head looking back the other way towards the health orb. Not only would this allow the figure to be more interesting (cool silhouette/emotion/folds in the cloth), but it would also help the movement of the piece and even have us questioning things like "does he know he is being controlled" or even if he can see the limits of his life. I hope this helps!

Ricardo Robles - Thank you very much Ricardo, I enjoy it alot :)

Mokinzi - Thanks! I will definitely let you know when.. I mean, if that happens :P

Sirsketchalot - Thank you very much for the solid crit! I agree with you on that point. A symmetrical composition is a strong and solid composition, but also very static.
If I had more time I would have posted this in the critique center first, for feedback, but I had to rush it. Never the less, thank you, I will take it into consideration when doing another symmetrical piece :)

Zedkhov - Hehe, indeed! cheers

Zornik - Thank you, It's what I love to do.. can't se myself working with anything else.

TuomasTormanen - Thank you!

Awesome, great look! I think it's worth 5 stars as is. Kind of reminds me of Kekai Kotaki's work.

Poojipoo - Thank you! I saw your contest-entry aswell. It's great! best of luck :) I agree with the paintjob, next time.

Man Made God - Thank you! thank you very much. Yes, it's been far too long.

Icedearth15876 - Thanks!

AlstonInk - Then I have succeeded in what I aimed for. Kotaki is one of my favorite artists and greatest influences. This piece was influenced a lot by his work. Thank you!

AKIRA wrong - thanks! :yayca:

thank you all!

Great mood you catched. I like it.

Can you remember how close you worked at this while detailing ? 50% or 100% close up ?

DefiledVisions
August 9th, 2009, 04:32 PM
Liffey - now now, this is not a one-sided battle. We're in this together :asspat: thank you :)

Vaejoun - Thanks! a lot of variation. For the detailing of Diablo's face and the wanderers cloak-patterns I mostly worked at 100%, same goes for most of the fire and border details. The foundation for everything was mostly worked out at 50% and 25%.
Original picture size is international a4 .. think it's around 3400 pixels. My computer is really old so that size is my limit.

I'm not sure if it's official or not.. though it is my name there. I think I won the fan-art contest :)

Congrats on the win, man! I was at BlizzCon and when they showed your piece, I was like, holy shit! - I saw this guy's thread on CA!

I entered a piece on StarCraft myself, but it didn't so hot, obviously. Oh well, I'll be back next year :)

Keep on pushing, you've got quite a talent! Enjoy that shiny new laptop!

This is a very good piece. I would like to see more cools in there. It's got a good overall warmth to it, but maybe some desaturated violets and blues. Hell, even greens. Good work though!

GriNGo - Thank you!

Kono - No really? Must've been great fun being there. I've been checking the announcements and stuff, Monk for Diablo III and WoW: Cataclysm seems really cool.
Thanks :)

RoboBobo - Thank you, I do agree. I had some trouble solving that, my last minute solution was to apply more warmth to the warmth :P that's why there's flames around him.

Willerthekiller - Thanks man :)

thank you all. Glad you enjoy it
