Hey guys I was just wondering about which of you live and work in or close to Los angeles. A friend of mine has a (what he calls) a sketch group. A group of people that get together and sketch and exchange ideas and stuff. I thought it would be a cool thing to get together with other professional people, kinda like a concept art Los angeles group thing. Anyway I'd like to get your thoughts. Creativity is contageous and I guess I'd like to throw around the idea of maybe starting one of these groups in Los Angeles.

I live in L.A., but I'd like to leave soon. I came here to be around the 2D animation industry, but it seems to be dead right now. I've only been in CA since '98 and I am already tired of the noise, traffic, smog, and people. I miss the trees and quiet...I am thinking of moving to Maine, or Virginia. Or perhaps Northern CA where it's a bit more green.

Hey, I live in Virginia. If you ever wanna come and see a nice place just to take a hike or go camping. Come to the Shennandoah Valley during fall. You'll get to see the leaves change color also. Theres also a lot of old, historical buildings which would make interesting drawing/paintings. Plus, the mild winters are nice too. Sometimes their just bad enough to cancel work/school :P

I'm in virginia... it's a big state, northern va is as crowded as LA, in my opinion, but the farther south you go, the more different the state becomes. If you're looking for art jobs out here, you're not gonna find much animation in my area (Richmond)... but up north there may be some. Then you deal with the beltway and the dc crowd though.
and anarchy, our winters aren't mild at all, at least when compared to LA winters. "oh gosh it's 50 degrees! better wear pants instead of shorts!"

Your comparing our winter to CA, so of course its going to seem more harsh. Compared to alaska or canada, its fairly mild. Still, the most we get is like 1 foot, usually. We have an occiasional blizzard, but it isn't anything life-threatning. It just makes the outside look nice and white.

hey Virginia guys...where is a quiet, peaceful and small town to live (yet close enough to commute to reach a decent city)? I have relatives in the "DC" area of Virginia, but I'd like to live in a more quiet setting. Have you ever heard of Upperville or Middleburg? I remember passing through these two towns...from what I recall they were mostly comprised of horse ranches and antique houses. I'm sure it's expensive to live there, but it's an ideal place I'd love to live in. I'm used to the snow...I grew up in New Hampshire and Maryland. I miss the four seasons, actually--getting quite tired of constant sun! :)

The area in which I live in does have "shootings" hence the "feel free to shoot at me" saying.
The North Hollywood bank shootout of 1997 was the most media publicized (so far).

Hey, I'm a Virginia guy. Great state, not the most "happening" state, but a beut' of a place nonetheless. I live in Madison (Or, more precisely, Wolftown) which is about an hour away from Charlottesville (pretty big city, home of UVA) and an hour an a half away from Fredricksburg (rarely, go there, but they've got tons of stuff), and if you want to head up to DC, you can get there in about two hours, depending on traffic, of course. It might be tricky to find a decently priced piece of land (if you're looking for land), but it's a very pretty country out here. Great landscapes. Come join us in Virginia. :)

wow, I live in west L.A., and haven't been in contact with any crime whatsoever...the only two things close to crime I saw was: when 9/11 rolled around there was a bookbag left by the gate on the Jewish academy I live next to, and a bomb squad had to go and investigate the bookbag; turns out it was just a plain old bookbag....also, someone put some grafitti on our apartment garbage bin, and the week after a group of community service people were taking it off...
But I haven't seen anyone get shot (knock on wood). I think I live in a safe area.

I grew up in Maine, and would -only- recommend it to those with established networks and a rep that allows one to work remotely via DSL/Cable internet connectivity. Zero art work outside the Portland market (which can be a fun little town).
I've lived in the SF Bay Area now for 11 years, and just love it...been lucky enough to have survived build, bubble, and burst! ;) Other than that one time getting carjacked in Oakland, it's been great...
