This is my first post here. However I am a penciler, Here you are seeing a concept drawing of Solid Snake I done and colored in Photoshop. This my 8th CG I've ever done in Photoshop, so please be easy on me, but do suggest. I think that seems to be whats keeping me from being an improving artist, no one is giving me some feed back .

Well, ok I won't comment on the digital stuff. I would advice you to study human anatomy, but not from books. Take a local life drawing class with live models. On a separete note I would advice you to not label yourself a "Penciler" or anything at first until you've covered some basic art training principles. Finally, and this is only my personal opinion. I think that it's a better Idea for your "Concept" portfolio to create concepts instead of re-interpreting exsisting ones. It'll give people a better idea of your design skills.

good point :) , Yeah I hope to be in my first year of art school in the spring at American Academy of Art, Chicago so hopefully I'll gain a lot of improvement.

You didn't give credit to the original artist. That drawing (that you have duplicated) was originally in PSM (something about characters) So please don't take credit for it when you copied it out of the magazine. I'm gonna rummage through my old PSM's to find the image so I can scan it.

Hmm, It's not bad, but it's also not very skillful, right now he doesn't really have any form to him, and that's probably because there is no real indication of a lightsource. Like the face is shadowed on the right, but his abdomen is shadowed on the left. When you do use lines to shade, don't use squigly lines, it never looks good, try to shade using diagonal lines, all going in the same direction, it gives a much better look in a relatively fast time. Take your time when you draw, don't get impatient, the slower you draw now, the quicker and more accurate you will be in the future. I would spend about 75% of my time on proportions and structure, and the rest on shading. As far as learning your anatomy, a live model won't teach you what a deltoid is, the knowledge of what's there comes from books, the skill required to interpret it in a realistic way comes from studying the model. Personally, I would just learn enough to not tie you down, but to have it in the back of your head... Proportions > Anatomy When I say model, I don't necessarily mean a living model, unless you're going to have a model in the same pose for several hours, you won't learn much about being accurate. Instead, draw from sculpture(best), still life, anything until you can interpret lines, and bring out form perfectly, and quickly, only then do I think a live model would be of some use. It's hard to find a "good" figuritive teacher in the states, a lot of what you will learn will have to come from personal observation and research. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Yeah I replicated the drawing btw, forgot to mention I don't know who the artist is but it's from AUG'00 Issue 36 vol.4 of PSM Page:72 sorry about that guys. I do have some original work, but I am going to hold back on posting what I currently have and just post my new stuff. again sorry about that, I don't want you guys thinking I'm a ripper.

It's not really a big deal, you just forgot. You just gotta be extra careful to not forget these things as of late because of that one guy who was going around using other people's work to get jobs. Everyone is really sensitive because of that.
