We're looking for an illustrator/concept artist to help us design a futuristic news studio. We need someone who can start work immediately and who is willing to complete an unpaid spec. Please send your portfolio to bsmith@theonion.com and include 'Concept Artist' in the subject line. Thanks!

No spec jobs!

And please post this in the Non-paying section where it belongs.

Please clarify. Unpaid spec meaning just a first demo that is unpaid, or the whole project is unpaid.

Thanks.

I expect the job is a paid job, that is asking for an unpaid "test" to ensure suitability (although confirmation would be appreciated).

I'm not a fan of unpaid tests either. An existing portfolio and work history/client list should be enough to convince an art director that an artist can meet their needs. However, not every job that comes through here has an experienced art director in charge, or they may have bosses above them that don't understand how things generally work with hiring artists. Every so often there are worthwhile jobs making this request.

The Onion is pretty well known satire news. Some people may find it worthwhile to do an unpaid test.

He/She said unpaid spec, not unpaid test. That's why I posted a reply.

Black_Fish you may have a point. I assumed they meant test because unpaid and spec generally mean the same thing. Onionpost hasn't come back to clarify.

Since the post isn't clear, and only mentions spec work, I am going to move the thread to Unpaid until we hear more.

Onionpost, if you update this with more information send me a private message and I'll move the thread back to small freelance.
