Hi all
Finally, I get off my butt and start a sketchbook. Would love to get a whole can of crits from everyone.
A photoshop sketch, practising some stuff learned from Vilppu. Hmm.. already see a bunch of mistakes, will keep working on this one.
Thanks heaps!

Hey dude!
Found you. Good to see you studying Vilppu. I did the same! :P and then there is Bridgeman, Loomis, and Hogarth too!!!
Soooo much to learn. This guy looks good! I can see the twisting on the torso and the foreshortening of legs. His shoulder looks a lil dislocated though, i think it might be the anatomy. The arm bones should connect to the shoulder blades.
Post more more more! I wanna see progess!

Thanks Carl! Fanks for stopping by!
I wanted to push the elevation of that shoulder... yeh I broke it good. =(
This one done on a free program I just found called Pencil..
Woa posting on sketchbook is a great incentive to work harder.

Thanks DiR3Kt and matt!
I hit a snag with a drawing I'm working on, realise I have no clue what the armpit looks like. so I did some paintovers of someone else's awesome drawings just to fathom the structures underneath the skin.
First one is Prudhon, 2nd is unknown Spanish academic

Thanks Jaytea!
An idea for a Kungfu/Horror/Western kinda story bit me on the arse some time ago. So I'm making a concept art project out of it at the moment.
My first attempt in the search for a face for my gunslinging, demon-hunting monk.
Gonna make some more practice before bed...

OK moer of same. Stick to the drawing procedure this time, helps a lot. I'm not ready to improvise..
Not getting any closer to my character but meh, I needs the practice first before doing the fun stuff.

Monk vs. zombie priest
amoh
August 16th, 2009, 06:20 AM
Haha this zombie priest is great! I think you could try to make the values of the monk a little clearer. One does only understand that there is a figure jumping towards this priest but I am not getting how his poese really is and especially where the arms really are.
You have some good figures here.
Great work keep it up!

Felt like a chore... at least I did something.
I am shit at using the wacom. My hand hurt from having to press too hard. Just adjusted the max pressure threshold (thanks CA wacom section!), will try out tomorrow. I am determined to masterise that bitch.
Good night y'all
amoh: thanks.. I will draw better monks, that's a promise!

ok Wacom much much nicer to handle after pressure tweak. No more excuse for sucky work then.

Thought I share my preferred method of messing up a drawing:
1) start real loose, follow the procedure: gesture-spheres-cubes
2) about 1/3 way through blocking-in, I like to skip steps and get some stuff wrong.
3) proceed to add value all the way down to details in some places. This make sure I lose sight of the whole and completely fuck things up
4) after hours of polishing the turd, notice glaring error in drawing
5) erase, repeat 1) - 3) until good or unable to continue

you have some really good pose work here. I really like the torso movement you give your characters. I also really like those last drawings. The photoshop conceptual ones. They're really nifty looking!

Studying 'Game Character Creation' over at CGWorkshops. This is some concept art.
The brief is to reimagine an old game character. I chose Dutch Schaeffer from Aliens vs. Predator arcade game. And imagine him as feral little kid. The setting will be 'fantasy' era instead of 'hi-tech', so his mecha arm will be made of wood

cool stuff really good gesture. I saw a few problems with the knee joint in some of the earlier ones but thats probably gone by now. For the hand post #21 I think the fingers point a little too deep back in space, it might help to try to wrap the fingers around a cylinder.
For the skin tones theres a subtle effect called sub surface scattering that adds redness or more saturated colors from light bouncing off bloody sub dermal tissue beneath the epidermal layer you see. http://imaginefx.com/02287754331648558994/beauty-is-only-skin-deep.html
Unless I missed something, I dont think that Ive seen any life painting yet, and as I am sure youve heard its a great way to practice light and color. So some life digis would be a good idea. If you havent looked into loomis yet you can find his stuff here http://www.placidchaos.com/AM/index.php/2006/02/21/andrew_loomis.
Great stuff, keep it up.

Thanks for the great tips! I can see now red is completely missing from my boy's skin. The skin deep tutorial is great finally explained subsurface gathering to me in a way that I get.

Hey man, nice thread. We have similar influences, you and I. I too study Glenn Vilppu's constructive approach (obsessively) and have learned most of what I know from Vilppu's student Sheldon Borenstein. Bridgman is a big influence on me as well. Honestly, as long as you continue to practice Vilppu's methods I feel that you'll do well. One small crit I have is regarding the female figure in your last update. You might want to indicate the visual structure of the breast coming from behind the Pectoralis. As it is, they just sort of meld together which creates an irregular curvy line. Try to use a curve for the breast against a straight for the Pectoralis (Think of it as a box fitting into a sphere). I'm far from perfect at drawing breasts and I make the same mistake very often, it is just something that I know. I learned it from Vilppu. :)

Thanks Sir Cam!
Long time no update. Mostly been working on my 3D things..
Painted this off a photo. My measurements skills were extremely cr%p, had to cheat heaps of times by moving pieces around until i got thing in the right place. Also had no clue what to do for skin tones ( had found some info since). But other than that yeah I'm awesome =p j/k

Hey Link!
how's your full-assed learning adventure going?... Looks like you're having fun with wack-a-mole from imagination! Just killer dude. more more more!
Get those studies from life done too!... the more you paint from life the larger you skill set grows and you and throw what you learn into your concept stuff.
..... you've reminded me to do some hand studies... dammit!... why is there always more to learn! :P ..... i love it!
