Hello!
So this is my 2nd attempt to for a sketchbook at CA. 1st one starved slowly to death and should stay buried in the depths of the forum.
Some boring facts about me:
I'm Sabrina, 25 years old and student in Japan Studies and Art History. I started drawing and painting a while ago, but I'm still a noob. So yeah... critique plz. :3
Big issues:
Anatomy
Colouring/using paint in general
Scenery conception
Any help is much appreciated! :D

So first things first: Last winter semester I stayed in Japan for 6 months and during that time I didn't have any digital paining equipment with me - but my sketchbook that I almost filled up! :D
It's probably not that much output as others have here but it's not that bad at all. For the most part characters studies. Started out with a little help of Loomis.
(Also, the uploader is killing me, so I'll just put up the sketchdumps I composed for my dA. Makes it less complicated.)

Yay, you made a sketchbook at last! :teeth: Most awesome! I'm sure it'll become a fantastic catalyst for you :3 It provides good comments/crit and needed butt-kickings!
I've already commented on most of these sketches, but I still think they rock! That latest sheet with all those nicely rendered character portraits is beeeaautiful. Especially Romin! :heart:

Love the character face study. Looks like they really have a different personality from each other! I need to do something like that~~~ That's why I love CA, I get new inspiration everyday.
What's the story behind these characters?

July 29th, 2009, 02:22 AM
Asa Yeah, finally! Sorry, not much new for you, haha. But I will upload the rest of my stuff asap and then I hopefully get some critique for my wip! :D
fluorine Thanks a lot! The characters are actually from a private story project. I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it (secretly I'm dreaming of turning it into a comic or something) but for now this is my playground when it comes to practising and doing studies.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Ok then more stuff to show you!
This is the digital stuff I've done since I returned. Sadly university started again so that I didn't have more time for painting. :(
1) quick coloured sketch (though I'm not quite satisfied with the result)
736353
2) a portrait for Johane Matte's Water Tribe comic based on her character design and that old famous photo of an Inuit woman:
736354
3) mother-daughter portrait for Der-Shing Helmer and The Meek, based on her character designs
736355
4) another coloured sketch; first did a grey-scale then tried to colour it... hmm... could be better. Was my first try in this technique. :(
736356
5) Kulla for Anne Pätzke, based on her character design
736357
6) a couple of style studies, partly based on some sketches from above
736358736359736360
7) B/W study from one of my sketches
736361
8 ) my sister and her boyfriend! :D

Wow beatiful and solid character sketches here :) I particularly like your pencil handling.
I little envy you having been in Japan for 6 months :p Would klike to go there some day, too. Japan is so fascinating issue.

Great work so far! Your portraits are wonderful. (I especially enjoy the portrait for Johane Matte's Water Tribe comic; that's beautiful.) My only crit is that some of your pencil works (for instance the drawing of the house in post #2) could use a little more contrast; your tones are a bit limited to the middle value range. Keep up the good work! ;)

July 30th, 2009, 05:10 AM
Eiki Thanks a lot! Being forced to just use the pencil for those months really helped. :3 As for Japan: If you should have the time and money you should really do it. It's definitely worth it!
BlackDelphin Haha, thanks! Always great to see familiar faces, isn't it? :D
dierat Thanks a lot! Yeah, the tonal control of my pencils got better over time but is still limited, as you said. Perhaps I should get a wider palette of various degrees of hardness or something. All the sketches above were just done with a 2B pencil (or rather plenty of them - my sweetheart got me a whole package of 2B Faber-Castells and I love them!)
Lapada Thank you! The little bunny even has it's own book series! Anne's work is really adorable. :heart:

So guys and gals, let's come to the real fun part: I need help with a WIP!

I know a lot of stuff is still off - though I can't put my finger on it. So if someone could help out with some concrete advise how to improve this painting I'd be very thankful! Redlines are welcome as well!

ALWAYS a pleasure to see familiar faces! :D
And about your wip...i think, for starters, his pose may be off? i mean...what is he practically doing? : So he's sitting there, right? relaxed, chopping off his wood, no, with some grass arround, some moss perhaps? and is that a tree, a tree (what's it called...the end of the tree...taht normally is under ground?) yeah...that part.. is the pose really relaxed? take a look again i say, flip it if you need, and make him mega relaxed to do his job
I also think the wood shall need more texture and shape variation..And perhaps do a grayscale of this to see if the lighting is off, if the values are good, so on, and so forth
=^_^=
Pretty_Angel
July 30th, 2009, 06:14 AM
BlackDelphin Yeah, you know that's the problem I have. I know something is wrong, but I don't know what. It's driving me nuts, lol.
I actually am flipping that thing quite often (half of it is painted when flipped) and I have a black layer on top in colour mode so that I can switch grey-scale on and off whenever I want. From the latter I know that I still need to balance highlights and shadows.
As for the pose I'm not quite sure. To me it looks quite comfy. But yeah, something is off and I can't nail it down. :C
Ok then... here are the flipped and b/w versions... perhaps that might help?

hi ^^
i dont feel like im in a position to give cc really, im so fresh here.. but if i was cutting a piece of wood i would keep my eyes on it, his eyes seem a bit off, and i'd love to see him cut that wood into something ;) it kinda looks like a hairy coconut atm..
well, i dont feel very helpful, but i tried -.-' good luck
oh and btw, those collarbones connect alittle weird, it looks kinda flat
Pretty_Angel
July 30th, 2009, 01:02 PM
Sollid Na, don't feel shy! :D
For your critique: Yes, you're right about the eyes thing. I'm trying to fix the problem for a while now (therefore the big changes in the face) - though I seem to be too stupid to get it right. Argh. Maybe I need to tilt the head a bit more? idk
Also working on the wood. Haha, I'm already glad that it doesn't look like a potato anymore. Though a hairy coconut is not much better. lol
I'll definitely check out the collar-bones. Thanks buddy!

It's a very nice painting! When I look at it the only thing that jumps out at me is that maybe the head os a little small? I think it looks that way because his sleeve is very large, I think it would work better if it was less loose. Loving your work so far!
jackpot_anjr90
July 30th, 2009, 10:06 PM
Nice start! I'm really liking this latest one you've posted. The head seems like it may be a little small (I noticed this when comparing it to the size of his hand). Looking forward to seeing how this turns out :)

I think i have something..look at the flipped version: i think the right shoulder (the one with the knife) is waay to big, and now look at the grayscale: i think the shading on the pants reflected by that knife-holding hand is off
Hope i said something useful ^^'
And good luck~

deerinheadlights Yeah, the proportions are a pain in the ass. Made the sleeve a tad smaller. Seems to work at first glance. It looks a little less off now. Thanks! :D
jackpot_anjr90 Thanks a lot. Worked a bit on the proportions - though I still need to check them back once more. :(
BlackDelphin You're right! Tried to fix it a bit with correcting the clothes. Looks better now, though I probably need to check it once more. Haha, the pants were still very much beta-phase. Made some progress on them today - hope it's better now? :)
JMonsterDesign, laxon, Icedearth15876 Thanks guys! :D
Giorge Thanks! My avatar is Oola from Guild Wars. I made a fanart from her last year for a little contest. Here's the full painting:
738805
~~~~~
Current progress:
tilted the picture a little -> pose is a little bit more laid back now
added/corrected some details with clothing
gave the wood a bit more shape (still doesn't look like wood, or does it?)
tried to fix the issue with his eyes (he should look at the wood... though I fail at this D: )
fancy bag! :D
738808
Proportions are still a mess - will correct that tomorrow. Hopefully.
Your WIP's coming along great! The face is just wonderful and I really envy your control over the folds in the clothing. For a crit, I'd like to see you add some variety to your colors. Presently the image is all green, brown, and a little ochre in the shirt. I would add a bit of warm yellow to the streaks of light in the background (and tint some of the right-side highlights on the figure with that same color) and add some blue-purple to the shadows in the foreground to push the depth of your values. And, this is really silly but for some reason that bag is really distracting me because of the vertical alignment; I would rotate the bag clockwise a little so it looks less posed (that should also add to your diagonal movement in the image a smidge). Good luck!
adjusted the proportions
changed the position of the bag a bit
tried to add some subtle blues here and there
added some brighter yellow to the sunshine rays
added some rough leaves and some grass
Looks good to me! The only thing bugging me is the thing he's cutting. Is it wood? I'm not quite sure why it's white unless you're intending for it to be a white wood, but unless it's really important for it to be white, I would consider making it brown and maybe adding some grain to it and defining some solid planes. (If it were brown it would be more recognizable as wood and it would also stand out better against his shirt.) Right now it looks like a stone to me because of the color and the smooth shape/texture. Keep up the good work! ;)
August 7th, 2009, 03:15 PM
Hey, dierat! Thanks again for a super helpful post! :heart:
I worked on the wood and I'm actually quite content with it now. For the first time that thing looks like wood! Yay!
Also painted the background - I pretty much like the impressionist feeling. So I'll probably keep the final version a little rough.
August 9th, 2009, 11:22 AM
Well just look at that!! :D
The wood looks so nice now!! But i think the little bits on his pants need more detail.
About the arms..i see the left one has come very nice together, just near the hand: i still think it's to sudden, how it's bind like that...or the folds are a bit weird? i don't know for sure but you could try folding a cloth like that and see?
Take care~ :D
Pretty_Angel
August 9th, 2009, 01:31 PM
Dierat Thanks! :D
BlackDelphin Thank you! Yeah, I'm still working on the details. :meow: For the sleeve let Mr. Depp help you: Yo ho, I'm a Pirate! (http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/9225/91481119.jpg) Couldn't think of anything better so I googled for pirate shirts as reference. Probably should add a few more of those tiny folds?
Hi Pretty_Angel. Your last piece is coming along very nicely! I really dig your colours and rendering. It might just be me, but I think that his head and hands could be made a bit larger, the proportions are just slightly off at the moment in my opinion.
I'm happy to do a quick edit of your image, just to show you what I mean. I don't want to post any images here without your permission and mess up your sketchbook.
Either way I'm looking forward to seeing the finished piece!
Hi. Good SB you have going here!
I was surprised to be greeted by someone that looks like a cross between David Bowie and Sting in your first pic :D
You have some really good ideas, and I like the cleanliness of your lines. Your studies of heads are really good, too.
I do think you need some work on eyes overall, as they relate to the head. Once you got to this post (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=736353), they had improved though.
I was going to say something about the man under the tree having too small of a head :o but it seems you fixed the proportions in the Aug. 6th post of yours. Looks like that will be a nice piece
I'm no good at anatomy, so I could be totally wrong about this, but I feel like his right arm (our left) could handle being longer in the top half and the ear could be moved slightly towards his face (right now it feels to me like it's attached to his neck instead of his jaw). Keep at it! ;)
BlackDelphin
September 1st, 2009, 03:19 AM
You're getting there, but there seems to be something wrong with the shirt..the folds perhaps?
But then again there's something about the proportions that is bugging me, though i can't quite put my finger on it..
I shall await a new update! :D
Pretty_Angel
September 1st, 2009, 08:25 AM
dierat Thanks for the hints! The ear was easily fixed, cause it was rather a problem of the lighting. The arm... we'll see. I worked on further on the anatomy.
Christina Yeah, the shirt wasn't really my focus yet. Also worked on anatomy and tweaked the pose. Hope it looks better now. :D
Ok then, we hit the deadline of TEAM CHOW II and we're done with everything. Although we probably won't win it's great to see the result and that we made it despite all obstacles. :D
You can find our group post in the Final Burning Thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=167193).
So here are some of my sketches. We played around with African themes. The Satyr characters finally made it.
Christina Thanks! Ehm, which arm do you mean? His left or the left from viewer's pov? XD In any case I posed in front of the mirror to check them. The basic pose seems to be ok to me. Though I don't look very manly and muscular - so that might cause some flaws. I'll look more into that! :D
This all looks really nice. Your pencil drawings look really effortless (especially in the first few posts). Your painting skills are really nice too.
The one criticism I do have is in the WIP of the guy in the woods, the hand he is using to whittle with looks kind of lifeless, almost like he died while he was doing it, so I would say try and fix that if you can.
Kim_bot
September 4th, 2009, 08:53 PM
Cool sketchbook here!
About the morning guy holding coffee (or is it tea?):
Face and upper arm areas look good, but the hand going into the pocket seems off...the pocket should curve around the leg more; right now it looks like it's facing us directly, but it should be in perspective more.
BlackDelphin
September 5th, 2009, 01:09 AM
it is coming along quite well! but i honestly think (and i am terribly sorry that i couldn't make this remark earlier) that her turban is to stiff for his size; have you thought-tried resizing it? or adding more weight to it? more folds could help too i think
the colour scheme and values are coming along nicely, as always ^^
i can't wait to see what you add more to it! (remembering your last wip and everything..)
Riddimensaur Thank you! For your critique, I have absolutely no idea how I could change that. :(
Kim_bot Thanks a lot for the feedback! :D I think I understand what you mean with the pocket. Will fix that!
Christina Haha, you could have really told me earlier! XD I see what I can do, but honestly I don't really think the size is too big - at least not in the sense of that it might fall off due to the weight or something. (see attachment) But some more dynamic folds could do the job... I'll do my best!
Matt Thanks for stopping by! I'll see what I can do with the turban. :D
Opinions? :D
BlackDelphin
September 6th, 2009, 09:09 AM
Well that's more better! and i think the size wasn't really the problem, now that i look at your sketch, but more the angle..or better said, the way those folds wrap around~ much better now!
you found a way to make it look a bit more gravity dependent like
one last picky thought? :)
try adding a bit more folds to the lower part of the turban's back? near to her neck there
but i'f i'm being to picky, smack me, ok? ;)
good luck onwards!
Sorry for the inactivity. I was super busy recently with painting my grandparent's wedding photo for their golden wedding. That old thing suffered from moisture and got some ugly stains everywhere. Eww. :(
Apart from that I continued working on that painting with the morning guy. (lol) Ventured into colour territory which was a pain in the ass. I always have problems with the transition from grey to colour.
Most walkthroughs I found on the net are just something like "First I draw the picture in greyscale... and then I just colour it!" Wait, what? How? D:
Ok, kidding aside, I know you can play around with layer options and lots of funky colour adjustment options in photoshop. Skin tones are especially crucial. After trying out all possibilities they still look pretty blegh in the end. :(
Do you know any good guides how to colour greyscale paintings?
Eventually I always end up simply repainting most of the picture and correct the muddy colours. I'm not entirely happy with the result so far (though it's much better than a lot of other colouring attempts. XD).
Your threads always such fun to look though Sabrina:)
That CHOW piece turned out really cool!! Love the bight colours!
Good solid digital painting there too!
As far as painting in grayscale, I'd say to do some black&white photo studies, these should help with the values. Apart from that I really can't help:shrug: sorry.
All the best Sabrina,
p sage Thanks a lot for the hints! Tried to fix it. :D
Matt Always a pleasure to have you around! You're right about b/w studies. I absolutely feel more confident with values since I started to do more b/w stuff. I'll definitely continue and do more of them. The only thing that's bugging me is that all the cool kids can turn the greyscale so easily into juicy colours, haha. :^^:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As said - tried to fix the issues with the Adam's apple and the pecs, as well as some shadows. Also added a kitchen scenery background cause I'm tired of characters living in some ominous empty space, lol.

Still any critical issues with this? If not I'll try to finish it soon. I'll probably insert some more kitchen stuff and polish things up a little.

What a gorgeous lady, love her face! And those juicy oranges <3 Is this from ref?
I haven't really tackled very dark skintones myself, so I'm probably not much help, sorry :( But I think you did a good job, the values are looking well. Maybe add some hue variety in the darkest ones around her nose/eyes, she's a little flatter there than around the neck. I also wonder if her lips may be more red or peach coloured? They seem almost the same colour as her skin, which is obviously fairly normal, but I think it'd fit the character. Just my 2 cents :)

And she is very pretty. Like asa said, i think you did great and i so love the oranges too. Values yeah, pretty good, just the earring seems a bit to flasy to me. He attracts a bit to much your attention from, for example, her eyes.

Hey Guys!
Sorry for my long absence. After my last update in September I got very sick and had to battle a nasty bronchitis for months! On top of that I had to write a paper for my studies and well... let's say there wasn't much time for artsy stuff. :(
But there's also good news: I passed my last test in Law, I finished my paper and when I'll finally finish my translation I can start with my Master's thesis an finish my studies! YAY! Also, I'm now officially a freelance illustrator and I was hired right away by a children's book publisher to illustrate their books. :D
Anyway, here's what I managed to pull off during the last months:

I'm not sure if I mentioned it here: I also started scribbling my comic last year (with most of the characters you see here in this thread). You can read the sketchy paged on my deviantART http://pretty-angel.deviantart.com/gallery/26063041
Last but not least: Thanks so much for your feedback! Sorry again that I don't post as often anymore but I read every one of your posts. :hugsmile:
Best wishes

Great studies, Sabrina. I love that first image in your last post - I think that's the first study you've shown here where the lit surfaces are tinted with the color of the light illuminating the scene. I know that a lot of the time, the color of light is pretty subtle and hard to detect, but going out of your way to accentuate it will really help the sense of light and atmosphere in your work. I also really like the lily study because of its subtlety, not only in the rendering and nuanced values, but in the texture in particular. Keep up the good work! ;)
