Hi everyone ,
I'm Rene, 19, from melbourne, australia and I'm currently studying industrial design (in second year).
I'll be posting primarily studies here, and I'd really like to hear your criticism to help my work :), maybe I can help you too.
Here's some of the stuff I've done over the last few days (most of them were between 40min and an hour), also here's the link to my deviant art with some of my digital stuff if you wanna have a look http://rene-w.deviantart.com/
Hopefully I'll be able to post updates daily and keep it going unlike my first sketchbook thread XD and thanks in advance
Cheers
Oh, and melburnians, show your face, would like to get in touch :P

Wow the skull rocks!
But your enviro studies are great as well! The red one has a nice feeling :)

Bloody Hell. What a way to kick off. Such beautiful enviros - the snow scene and the tower, whoa - and I especially love the skull. Well done, look forward to more.

Great studies so far! I really like the first snowy mountain scene. Great sense of contrast and variation in soft and hard edges. Keep it up!

good work and still 19 !
make me feel so dumb , all you posted is very good.
espcially those snow mountain... you could easily become a monster sketcher by doing this daily during a good period of time.
you would gain some stars very very soon

And industrial design? is that like engineering?

July 30th, 2009, 07:54 AM
wow, so many replies :)
Eiki: Thanks for the encouragement, much appreciated :)
jigje: thanks, I checked out your sb, youve made great progress already, and youre from melbourne too! :D
Mariusz Kornatka, dierat, zou: Thanks for all the nice words, its all very encouraging, ill do my best not to disappoint lol.
Lapada: Thanks and Industrial Design is pretty much product design so its the art side of engineering in a way. So alot to do with the form and aesthetics of how consumer goods look and work etc. Google will probably explain it better xD
Here's todays, still seems so rough for an hours work :(

keep it
the perspective of the wall (the one going to the left vanishing point and touching the tour) seems a little bit extreme compared to the right one
me too i'm studying industrial design, but in tunisia it's really really weak (i chose it just to force myself to think more as a designer but i know there is no chance to practice really) so i'm interested in how you study there (perhaps post some work)
see ya
so how you're

zou: yeh it is a little extreme. Um, we do sketching and cad stuff here, ill post some work soon, just have to get around to scanning it xD.
YihyoungLi: Thanks!
Here's todays, 4 hours work and its still quite flakey, cant say I think I did the photo too much justice. need to get faster :lifedrawing:
Oh, and does anyone have any advice or can point me at a tutorial dealing with skin texture and how to achieve a more painterly style? I'd like to try to get away from the airbrushed look.

Seems like you guys liked it even less than I did xD
Here's todays, trying to get to a more painterly style, 40 mins each. I did the guy with the pink lips first.

Here's what I did today, some thumbs that are supposed to be for the EOW 'den of thieves', not really sure you can call them that though hehe. We'll see how it goes, I might get around to doing something finished for it.

Your environments blow me away! Maybe incorporating some water bodies in the next ones? I'd be interested in how you approach that.
I think your environments are pretty painterly; you could apply that to the portraits. The faces--esp. the second one--in #19 seem "finished" enough for a painterly style imo. I like this guy's (http://bao22.blogspot.com/) painterly style; might give you some ideas. :)

Hello again
Bartovan: Thanks! I'll post some of my ID stuff soon enough ;), you's might find it a bit boring though.
Gorilla@Attack: Thanks, so motivating :)
YihyoungLi: Did some water in this one, though its quite still, will get around to doing some streams/beaches soon i think. Thanks for the link too, funny thing is that I have a friend with the exact same name, Bao Pham, though he does'nt paint cool stuff like that xD.
burialchamber/Goog: Thanks, I'll do my best to keep going as long as possible.
Here's todays, took me an hour, was hard to push myself to do this after 9 hours at uni, and got some more homework to do after this too :O. This one was quite difficult as well, the value shifts in the fore to mid ground on the left side were almost non-existant. All the nice comments really help though!

Darkside: thanks, will do my best
Here's today's guys, I decided to revisit the portrait of the guy with the pink lips from a few posts up, seemed so crappy and inaccurate for 40 mins. So I spent about 2 hours on this one, 40 mins was far too short I think, I'm still too newb to do any decent anatomy stuff in such a short time xD. I like the result of todays, though I'll probably hate it in a day or two :O .
I also did a line sketch beforehand to use as a guide, but it seems like a waste of time as I don't really end up using it too much. It's too hard to see/confusing when I start applying paint so I just ended up hiding it pretty early on. Maybe it's best to just mark in the landmarks instead of doing a full line sketch, opinions?

August 5th, 2009, 10:07 AM
The extra hour really paid off. When I blur my eyes, the delicious colors meld together very well--the face is quite realistic. I think some areas could be cleaned up though, especially the neck. Although the portrait is painterly, it is also kinda messy.
I haven't done this myself, but it may help to reference some of Sargent's paintings. He's supposedly known for being a "virtuoso" at painting: not only are his outcomes good, but he's also a performer when he paints. His brushstrokes are masterfully applied: less is the best so to say.

Hello ppl!
YihyoungLi: Yeh, youre right stroke economy is far from great. Though for myself, I've found that line quality has improved with experience on the subject matter. Thanks for the sargent tip, I'll check his stuff out.
Sublimus/DU5K: Thanks :)
Anyhow, another long day, just finished today's study took me about an hour and it's 1am now :O . Decided to do a cloud, I've had trouble with these in the past when doing non-refed enviro stuff, even hard to draw them with ref :O anyone have any tips or know effective approaches?
Samuel Gray
August 6th, 2009, 10:56 AM
Seems like you can already render things nicely. Try to use multiple references at once and see if you can create some type of image to illustrate a story.
YihyoungLi
August 7th, 2009, 12:37 AM
Steven Stahlberg has a pretty good Cloud Tutorial: http://www.androidblues.com/cloudtut.html I think it can get too tedious for quick sketches, but it's an effective way to think about painting the clouds.
I think creating a custom brush with random shape-outcomes might help out too. That way the result won't look contrived.

Hi
Samuel Gray: Thanks, will do when uni calms down a little, barely get the time to squeeze these in atm.
YihyoungLi: Thanks alot, I'll try that out the next cloud study I do. And, yeh I've got a few cloud brushes but they don't help when you want to actually shade the clouds.

Not bad man you got some nice work. I like that environment piece alot, the water was painted really nicely. In terms of work on the face I think you improved that a lot from the previous page. Yeah, people have there own approaches to faces, I personally like doing a under painting beneath the lines first and then gradually painting over the lines. If you like the approach you did go for it and I say just look closely at how everyone else do faces and experiment with those methods as well to find what best suites you. Try as many methods as possible I say. Anyway man keep up the good work!

Here's today's, felt like doing something less serious, so went for the thieves den again, im sorta stumped with this though... spent 60 minutes without ref, will hopefully have some better ideas of what to do with it by tomoro. Also I've never done any nighttime studies, so I was sorta just guessing with this

Ok, so I know you guys are probably wondering wtf he's bailed out after 2 weeks already xD . Not true though lol. I went out of town for a few days to a friends place, but I brought my laptop! So I did all my studies for the last, what 4 days I haven't posted? Unfortunately today when I was finishing the last one to post for today, I overwrote the study that I did over the middle two days... I clicked on the name to get the day22~60min but forgot to change the day so it overwrote :O Spent like 2 hours trying to recover it with no luck :(
So I was supposed to have a portrait of this guy http://screencrave.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/mcqueen_horn1.jpg as well. But now I've only got these two to show :( Both of these were 60 min. So yeh, will be back to normal daily updates now!

Hi,
Mischeviouslittleelf: Thanks, your stuff is awesome!
pathos: Hey there, I'm studying at RMIT Uni, I'm finding it quite good, though that's not saying much cus I haven't been to any of the other unis that offer ID (monash and swinburne) I think. I hear that swinburne isn't too good. Monash is supposed to be really good if you wanna do automotive, though its about an hour out of town afaik, RMIT's defenetly got the best location, it's right in the city. As to the course content, it's good, it's got a bit of technical stuff, but not enough to detract, and good facilities/lecturers.
Jaytea, Diabolique,americanheadcharge : thanks :)
Here's what I did today, started on a new painting (spent about 1.5 hours on this), probably gonna keep working on it and finish it over the next couple days. Painting with no ref has gotten harder for me lol, become so reliant on ref from all these studies xD.

August 14th, 2009, 05:16 AM
arsanik: hehe, thanks
pathos: hmm, not really sure tbh, I've actually been wondering why I chose it lately. Not saying that I'm bad at it, im probably better than I am at painting really. I like it though, always thought itd be cool to see something I designed in a shop, or meeting someone and then seeing that they've got something you've designed. It's quite a fascinating field once you're over the technical stuff, really looking forward to getting a job and designing something for real, as opposed to these 'simulations' xD. In a nutshell, if youre good at problem solving/like it and also like to design sexy and functional products its for you ;)
Anyhow, here's what I did today, a friend told me that the compo sucks on that last piece so I started again. About 2 hours into this one now, and didnt want to stop, unfortunately h/w awaits :(
