ROUND #168:: Where the Wild Things Are

DESCRIPTION

Where the Wild Things Are

... is a wonderful children’s book published in 1963 by Maurice Sendak, and if you haven’t read it, you should have! :) Apparently it is one of Obama’s favourite books! It might be sacrilege to even attempt it this week but imagine a new monster for Max (the central little boy of the story) to meet. They have a very distinctive look loosely based on Mythical Creatures, and of course the style of Sendak is what appeals, but don’t try and match his technique. Use your own and design a new one with his used as inspiration. This is for fun, and although they are ‘wild things’ they are somehow warm and friendly so perhaps steer away from anything gorey. I think the only requirement is yellow eyes!

These are too much fun. My hand couldnt keep up with my brain soon after this legible set though,so everything ended up as boxy T poses and i lost my mojo in frustration.

I was thinking of going with the little sleepy bat, but he reminds me a little too much of the owl character I did not that long ago, and a different bat I did back in march. Need to avoid feathers and wings.

...All kids love inappropriate nipples on a saggy sheman skunk. Im actually liking him/her the most atm, though s/he is perhaps a little too 'punky' for a wtwta character. (nipples aside, that was just to please my love of adding grossness)

Need to reassess and do another set of these in the morning. Must avoid making the characters my own twisted version and stick to something friendly, has to fit in with the universe not reinvent it beyond recognition. *slaps self on wrist*.

This was not a book i owned as a kid, i read it a couple of times but for some reason my parents didnt like it, but i wish i had, the nostalgia goggles would really help! All i remember is that i found the illustrations kinda creepy..

my mac is in the shop. my scanner is hooked up to my mac not my PC. my PC doesn't even have PS on it.

I guess I could draw it with pencil/take a picture? GRR... not my favorite choice.

I saw the footage at Comic-Con Hall H and saw the actor who played Max, he was adorable and very nice. I never liked this book actually, I had no memory of any happy ending, I mean, he had to go back home to parents like that... but I think perhaps I was always annoyed as a child that Max couldn't escape for real... and it didn't give me any hope to escape for real from my own childhood.

Anyway I see it in a different light now, would be awesome to try and put my hand to this... but without my usual tools, I'll just screw it up even worse. :(

ALH: Great monsters, you really captured the style!
Adam Hunter Peck: Very good, but I don't know why, but it seems to be small
Troubadour: It's a wonderful painting, is it watercolour?
Ostrander: I like it, it seems very real.
Sekino: I like its expression and I loved its feet :D
artiphats: You should read the book! It's a very small picture book (if you put all the text together it will hardly fill one page). I like your concept, although it looks a little alien to me.

Here's my initial sketch! (The up middle one)

I really like yours Garth. Very smooth and fun.

I don't know if I like mine much anymore, went with the "Use your own and design a new one with his used as inspiration" a bit much I think. I did have the trademark yellow eyes and teeth, but the rest just seems silly now.

Still have to work on his anatomy and pose a bit, a little odd atm. Colors are not set, nor is my highlights/shadows. Just have the shapes and generic lighting. Kind of considering doing a different piece for this project, more kid friendly and appealing.

Fantastic topic Aly!

Here is my entry. I didn't have much time to play with the sketches so now, when I am done, I would like to change, paint again few things, but I don't have time. Tomorrow I am leaving for two days. Anyway. This was fun. More topic like this one :)

dirkvandulmen - fantastic! I thought they should be funny and scary at the same time, but when I saw yours I would like to do another one. More funny and crazy one!

gerezon - I like his head. Especially the hair and eyes, but I don't buy his legs. Nice sketches btw. My fav is the one in the top right corner.

Garth Cochrane - cool creature and I like the face expression of both characters.

Hideyoshi - cool sketch. His eyes are crazy.

ALH - fantastic sketches. I love the middle one in the top row.

Cheers

Prelim photoshop for this guy..his pose has been doing my head in, its cute on the little thumbnail i did but i cant quite get it to look right in photoshop, that raised arm is the problem, though adding the light has helped- its at the point where i've gone over it so many time i cant see if im doing it right or wrong anymore, cant tell if the head is too shifted either..

On the verge of scrapping it, though i think thats the 12:20 talking after a few days of feeling in the dumps and losing my mojo. This kind of thing usually comes so easily too, its such the bitch to be stuck on it :(!

Sekino

Just Call Me Bruce!- Really cute so far; looking forward to see where you'll take the cat inspiration!

Garth Cochrane- Looking nice and polished. I think what gerezon meant was that the right eye seems a bit further from the nose than the left eye.

gerezon- Although it wasn't my favorite on your 4 character sketch, I really like it a lot now. Somehow, it reminds me a bit of something out of Monsters Inc. Its mouth is creepy but its eyes are friendly so it balances out ;)

Mordus- There is a CHOW rule about showing at least 3/4 of the character. This is only a sketch, right?

Jakkas- It looks fantastic! And so wooly :D

ALH- I really dig your style (and sketches!). And it's so sweet how the 'wild thing' shelters the kid from the rain.

My last WIP, probably. I'll add a few more details, but that's the gist of it:

dirkvandulmen: That's hilarious! Great work.

JakkaS: You're absolutely right, I'm not buying the legs either. By the way, great render, wish I could paint like that.

ALH: Great! Can't wait to see more.

Sekino: Really like lines and color choices.

Garth Cochrane: What Sekino said :) It's hard when you're painting monsters, maybe your intention was to place the right eye further away from the nose, but I'm not buying it, since the rest is so tight and well executed. Moving the right eye just a tad towards the middle of the face should do it.

Greetings
This is my first ever Chow entry. Such extraordinary work here every time, it's intimidating.

I Love the book, was raised on it and "In the Night Kitchen".

I had been planning to do a wild things piece for a while so this weeks subject was a welcome challenge.

No finals thread open yet so I'm poping him in here until then.

Have been visualising and doing margin sketches for this guy for a couple of days.

I know the brief specified our own style but he just didn't come to life untill I attempted to replicate the hatching of the great Mr. Sendak's.
Posing and general body part design was problematic. Don't want to copy, want to stay on style. He is original in every sense.

Couldn´t resist this even though I´m not that huge a fan of the book. My brother´s enthusiasm of the book and the movie must have rubbed of on me since I was talking to him about it and then saw this topic and just felt the urge to try to make something out of this.

Some good looking entries so far guys. It´ll be fun to see what you all come up with in the end.

Anyways, this is what I´m gonna be entering with this time. It´s based on a chimera but I didn´t really feel like having a snake´s head on the tail and I looked at some chinese statues and masks for inspiration for the "lion" head. And I have no idea why I gave him kind of a mullet looking thing. I just felt like it. Yaaaar.

When my son turned four in April this is the book he wanted me to read at his birthday party, so I'm really enjoying this weeks' CHOW (and right after Saladin!).

It's great to see so many individual takes on WTWTA style monsters, there are some really wonderful examples so far, although I think Beastmaster's chimera is at the top of my list - that's an absolutely awesome idea!

Hey Posh; I was wondering if it's ok to use a little girl rather than Maurice Sendak's boy character? I wasn't sure about that because alot of entries are using the boy in their pieces. If not I'll add the boy. But I'm keeping the girl.

Hey Posh; I was wondering if it's ok to use a little girl rather than Maurice Sendak's boy character? I wasn't sure about that because alot of entries are using the boy in their pieces. If not I'll add the boy. But I'm keeping the girl.

awww time for work:

From re-reading the brief... it says nothing of including Max or any other characters beyond the topic of "new wild thing".

so i chose this guy to take to final. Still going to tweak the pose, looking at it on screen he looks a bit off stance. Still not sure whether to use gouache or watercolor

thanks for the comments guys :) <3

edit: tweaked a bit.

Thanks. I was probably over-thinking when I read:".......imagine a new monster for Max (the central little boy of the story) to meet.":)

such a fun topic ! :) and it's already full of wonderful artwork

here's what caught my eye so far (apologies if i skip someone - it will be on accident ):

Desmayado : he looks so mischievous ;i find it charming;
Hideyoshi - that's a powerful gaze and a lovely creature :)
Garth Cochrane - i like your creature design but i think his colours blend a bit with a background (might be just me )
Jakkas - it looks so cuddly ! i wanna poke it on the mose
Troubadour - these are all really catchy!; my personal faves are the bottom right ones on each blue page :P
Beastmaster Fred - hats off for the design
Hungryan - very nicely stylised
kingkostas - i like the sense of scale in your piece
dirkvandulmen - this character is just beyond adorable all over :)
shard - you are getting a strong mood so far, pleazzzz finish :)
gerezon - lovely colours
sekino - it such an expressive look!..
ALH : thumbs up - great style

again , if i missed someone, and i m sure i did - do forgive me , i am a scatter-brain ;)

and here;s my initial brainstormings

Time for another WIP!

Im a little unsure of the rendering on the white parts of his fur, It still needs a little playing with. ATM its a reverse cross hatch, but i think it could do with being a little more 'wet fur' in the body even if a general hatching is more sendak-y.

The rain was fun to do :)

Hi peoples,

Wow, this movie is going to look stunning! I've never read the books as far as i can remember, but I love the creature design. I sure missed out.

The art here looks incredible.
This is my first time actaully finishing something to post in the wip thread for chow, and im very inspired to completely finish this.. =P
This is my wip.

ALH: I love your piece. I wanted to do a rain scene as well as soon as I looked at the trailer. I hope you don't mind :)

Because last week there was a bit of confusion over time zones involving various summer times and what-not, and because Daestwen is busy with Team Chow, I will be closing the submissions to the final burning at 10PM British Summer Time which is GMT +1 (which is what I normally do really). So if it’s 10 PM in the UK (where I am) it’s 4PM EST, unless you have some bonkers summer time thingy going on as well, in which case find out! I can’t close any later than this because creatures of the night, myself, also need a bit of sleep from time to time, otherwise we get more grouchy than we normally are! :P

I'm going to post my stuff here since my freaking internet and computer and KIDS did not want to jive correctly for my entry. It could use more work anyways.
