Draw more man. I wanna see more of your stuff. Your ideas are awesome. :D Just keep on drawing. And the daily sketch group is a good inspiration to draw from.

JoshDArtist
July 20th, 2009, 11:12 PM
and now, for the work in progress thang...
(you can also find it over at my blog (http://jdavis1278.blogspot.com/)

Step #1:
Concept in PainterX then gridded out to canvas.
(Yeah, I know I could project the image up there, etc. but I'm poor at the moment, so a projector will have to wait)

layin down some acryllics for value... (i tend to work like this, layering up the values in acryllics with oils over them.. just goes a bit quicker)

JoshDArtist
July 20th, 2009, 11:29 PM
then, onto the oils in the background...
started out ok, then wound up looking like a messed up bob ross painting...
:D

next step: tearing down the background into something much simpler...
(oh, and I just got a MUCH better camera, so hopefully you'll get to see it without that horrendous glare... )

I really like the grim atmosphere you've got going on in these. The knife guy in particular is a great concept.

Nice start man! I really like the way that painting is coming along!! More please..:)

JoshDArtist
July 21st, 2009, 08:00 AM
spoonfruit: Thanks alot! I'll be posting more this evening, after a long painting session.

blashyrkh: Thank you very much! He came about due to excessive amounts of history reading and listening to nordic death metal. These things happen. :D

Really cool stuff in here man, I really like your comic style and I think this sb is worth 4 stars so more people check it out so here ya go! ;)

JoshDArtist
July 21st, 2009, 12:43 PM
Suira: thank you so much!!! :D coming on here and getting feedback (in just ONE day!) is friggin rad... it's just a good feeling knowing that there are people out there pluggin' away at their images, trying to get the best they can...

burialchamber
July 21st, 2009, 02:33 PM
Haha, I'm also pretty inspired by death metal, though not so much the Nordic variety anymore (more into tech death and the brutal stuff). The red wolverine image looks like a bloodbath- awesome.

You have an unusual painting method. I'm curious to see how this will end up looking.

JoshDArtist
July 21st, 2009, 08:44 PM
burialchamber: thanks alot! I am about to get painting now for a couple hours, will post tonights work in a bit....

JoshDArtist
July 21st, 2009, 11:31 PM
Got some painting time tonight...
all feedback is welcome!

Simplified the background, then chunkified the painting a bit...

Hope it'll dry before tomorrow evening, then I can get some more done...

Those acrylic and oil piece is wonderful, it has quite a dreamy look to it.

JoshDArtist
July 21st, 2009, 11:44 PM
Izer: Glad that you picked up on that... :) It's an image pulled from a dream I had of a small boy, a traveler. I'm having fun with the painting, but it's at the crazy "oh, crap.. am I going to screw it up ?!?!" part... which is actually quite exhilirating..

JoshDArtist
July 22nd, 2009, 11:24 PM
so, the paint isn't dry enough for me to get some painting done tonight..
figured i would do a quick hour sketch, then go watch a movie...
It's from memory, no source material to look at...
here's what i got.... did the painting in Painter, took it in to photoshop to tweek a bit... get all the tasty bits poppin...

more tomorrow definitely!!! :D

just doing some thumbnails when I should be working at a job I hate.

burialchamber
July 23rd, 2009, 05:17 PM
You're very prolific lately! Some good ideas in the thumbs there- the last one in the second row is very dynamic and interesting.

Don't be afraid you'll screw up your oil painting- as long as the layer underneath is dry, worst case scenario if you make a mistake is you wipe if off!

By the way, the link in your signature doesn't go to the right place.

Parcel-Sisters
July 23rd, 2009, 05:20 PM
your sketches have great movement - keep letting your pencil flow like you are! I also really enjoy your thumbnails. :)

JoshDArtist
July 23rd, 2009, 11:02 PM
burialchamber: yeah, i think i will be doing a Painter project on that one... (if it's the same one I'm thinking of) ..did ALOT of wiping tonight lol...& fixing sig. (thanks for the heads up and the great comments!!!)

Parcel-Sisters: thanks alot for the compliments! :D
--------------------
Ok, so I got some hours in the old painting... pushed some values, lightened up the ones in the back ground, the sky is a bit brighter, more colorful around the figure/horizon...
will have to go in tomorrow or the next day to carve out some of those light areas i scumbled over tonight due to the wet paint...
now, onto some Painter work for a bit...

JoshDArtist
July 25th, 2009, 08:49 PM
Just some more thumbs before some painting tonight...

JoshDArtist

#4 on the thumbs above:
Just wondering which one people respond to better....

My favorite is the painting of the boy and fish. Reminds me of seurat's paintings- the "bathers" and the like. Look him up if you haven't already, his exploration of edge in both drawings and paintings were astounding.

Your other works are cool too, but i'm wondering if you're going to paint over the filter? You've got this lovely planet painting, but then there's this very harsh filter put on it that takes attention away from the work and subject and onto the filter itself. It definitely upped the contrast, but now the painting could use a little more paint again :)

JoshDArtist
July 26th, 2009, 08:52 PM
asomatous: thank you very much for the wonderful comment and crit.!!! :D I think you are correct about the filter getting in the way, and perhaps the reason I am responding to it much more favorably than the original is due mainly to the value contrast... I may just go back into the original and push the contrast up a bit, do a bit more value painting.. or, perhaps your suggestion of going back into the filtered piece might be more effective...either way, excellent eye for catching that... that's why I love this site!!!! :D

JoshDArtist
July 26th, 2009, 11:53 PM
went ahead and actually combined the 2 previous images. It toned down the linear elements alot, yet the contrast/value is still there... also popped some highlights on the rocks, just to push em closer to the viewer.
off to paint!

JoshDArtist
July 27th, 2009, 01:22 AM
So, just picked another thumb (from the first series of them) to illustrate..
A typical monster attack..
here's the start

burialchamber
July 27th, 2009, 01:55 AM
cooooool monster. might be more dynamic if you showed one of his feet coming down over the buildings he's smashing. Right now the focal point is on that apparatus at the front of his body, and even though it looks like some kind of mouth, from his stance it reads more like an eye, as if he's looking at a group of people he's readying to attack-- except there's nothing down there. The image is kind of disunified in that sense. Also, if you cropped it tighter so that the monster took up more of the canvas, he would seem a lot huger. But I really like the monster design, and the pose he's in is great. :)

JoshDArtist
July 27th, 2009, 08:11 AM
burialchamber: yeah, I'm having ALOT of fun with this one... i am planning on turning the eye thing into a type of laser/beam something... lol...
there will be folks below.. and more smashed stuff...
I'll have to try out the foot thing, see if it works with the image... good idea though :)

Bicnarok: thanks!
kingkostas: Thanks for your comments... yeah, I agree the filter is a bit much at times...

elements of the foreground that are a bit rushed, i realize...
overall, not shabby...
I can only get better...

burialchamber
July 30th, 2009, 01:13 PM
Cool, dude. Nice job on this. Next time it would be good to make sure the perspective on all the buildings is consistent. It would make the whole piece read as being more solid and developed. Also, you might want to think about adding a greater range of values (especially darks) and areas of higher color saturation.

JoshDArtist
July 30th, 2009, 10:44 PM
burialchamber: yeah, I totally get the value thing now, looking at it again.... grrr.. but there's always next time..
AND the always fun perspective... to be honest, it didn't even cross my mind for this one... just a jumbly city in layers was in my head...
but I think you are on to something with this piece, some nice , simple perspective on the main buildings would have popped the dimensions nicely...

Hey man, I'm really liking the sketchbook so far :)

Plus I think that last monster you drew even though you seem disappointed at it being in a more comic style I think it looks insane, love the colours in it!

My only real crit so far is probably in a couple of the pictures such as the planet with the asteroids and the monster in the city I can see the filter you have used and they seem to distract me from the picture which overall is very well presented.

Keep up the great work :yayca:

JoshDArtist
August 4th, 2009, 12:32 AM
Bagg: Thanks alot! I like how the colors turned out in the latest one, as well...

I am struggling/slowly working away from that damned poster edges filter... and the more people notice it getting in the way, the easier it's getting to get away from it.. lol..
(thanks to everyone for making me aware of it.. :D seriously, that's why I post my shit up here... I friggin love this site.. )

Thanks again!

Thanks for the comment in my sb.

I think you've got something going on here. I liked the painting of the boy and fish on the first page, and the thumbnails looked awesome. I think the last creature is looking pretty wicked, then again, I'm a sucker for comic-stylized images.

Keep on groovin' man!

burialchamber
August 4th, 2009, 11:51 PM
Hey bro! These are some juicy updates. That last monster is awesome (the comic style one), and actually I think it's one of your most successful pieces so far. I would say that you might want to try pushing the shadow values darker in the chest area, adding a couple of different hues of green to the skin tone in some areas, and possibly give him some textures (eg: make his horn-thingies look like they're made out of a different material than his skin). For next time, you might like to take a look at muscle insertion points and try to understand how they connect to bones and what shapes they make when the limb is in different positions. A lot of what you've done is very convincing (especially the lower section of the large set of arms), but certain muscle groups (such as the shoulder area of the large set of arms) don't seem to connect in a way that's functional.

Great designs, keep it up!

Mmmh.. Apple! sorry for melting your face.. I promise you a new one soon :P the digital stuff is looking good, though I'd like to see more pencils. Also I notice that when you colour you use black as shading, it kinda distorts the colourrelationship and makes it look dirty. For example the "warriorface" in post 80 has a strong yellow light on it while the background is greenish. Such strong light would naturally leave very dark shadows, however given that the over-all tone of his skin is grayish it doesn't quite work. For such strong light would also leave the skin very redish, due the the light reflected from the bloodvessels underneath. Also there would be some green in his shadowy parts due to the light reflected of from the green areas would be visible in the shadowy parts since they come from underneath.

Here's a great guide on colour relationships and pretty much all the fundamentals. You should check it out, it's really good. It explains what I meant with the blood.

DefiledVisions: Thanks for the crit! :) I will check out the link tonight after work... I really do struggle with color and it's proper use ... it's something that has been a major issue since I started and all the way through art school, etc. Most of my las show was monchromatic in nature. (Charcoals, etc) I usually start out my work in B&W and work it up from there, so maybe a different approach would help out.
As with any medium, it's a learning process- and Painter is no different... I just have to be patient and things will start "clicking"..
Thanks again for the helpful crit!!!

That's fantastic, I love it. The sense of space is really amazing.

The only issue is that the people look too large compared to the city. Distant things are smaller than nearer things, because your cone of view is larger the further out you go.

When you're dealing with very narrow fields of view, this effect is greatly reduced. You need to create a much greater sense of distance between the people and the city (perhaps just some atmospheric effect).

Thanks for commenting on my sketchbook. Some really awesome stuff in here.

The one thing that kind of bugs me is that, in your digital work anyway, most of your colors seem very desaturated and low-contrast. I think some really bright highlights, and some darker shadow areas would be a good thing to experiment with. Also going back and sharpening up the edges of things in the foreground, like that worm. Make it pop a bit more from the background. That's my thoughts.

I love the sense of space and atmosphere you create, it's very convincing and something that I need to work on; complete scenes are so impressive to me when they are finished.

Good work, I'll keep watching this sketchbook for sure.

Hey man! Just checking out how's your stuff developing. I have to say that you've got a great potential on colour , I really liked the piece on the 103st post , the rocks were showing potential. Still I think that you should work more on your knowledge of human form , because your human forms are a bit rigid and there's a lack of structure and sense on them ( not saying they're bad, just that if they were better your paintings would get A LOT more interesting ).

I'm not a pro at all but still I would recommend some stuff on your paintings. I'll take the piece on the 103st post to make my "crit". To me those rocks are reaaaaally cool I like the colours you've used and the effect of big size on the huge statue are pretty great. BUT , now there are these problems to be solved. The scenario looks cool but empty I think this is because the statue, wich is meant to be the center of attention is not calling the eye due to this blurry effect ( wich is well done but not recomendable to use on the central figure of the piece) to solve this you should use a bigger amount of contrast on it and it should be solved. I also think that the size of the painting is too big, it doesn't concentrate the space enough so you can see the whole thing and think of the statue, to me this is a composition problem that can be easily solved by just thinking more on the picture you're gonna create before you do it, if you still feel a bit lost on how to create your comnpositions there are tons of theory books and stuff but anyway there are many correct ones for a single picture so it's just a matter of choosing the one you like or the one you think is the best for what you wanna show.

About the statue itself there are some issues on the structure , this problem comes due to the lack of knowledge on human form and positioning of the body , also on how armors really are and well, this one is not gonna be objective : I also think it's too big to be a real huge statue on the mountains, I think it would fall, but not only that, I think it disturbs a lot the composition.

There's also a quite big problem that comes due to a very little and simple thing: the couple of humans on the rocks staring at the mountain totally break the perspective you created and it makes the rocks ( wich i really like ) look too little . Apart from that ai think they're way too rigid and that they're too detailed to be just a reference on the size of the statue . On of them is falling and the colour you've used to paint them is not the best choice you could have made. Again, all this is just my opinion and I can be totally wrong man, I'm just trying to help :D

Apart from those issues ( wich I'm sure will be solved with time when you practice more ) the picture is cool and if i had to recommend something to you it would be some intense studies on human structure , anatomy and all that boring stuff , even if you don't like it it'll benefit TREMENDOUSLY the way your paintings look , keep on going dude cause you show some serious potential. Hope you didn't feel offended or something because of the crit ^^

Keep it up dude, see ya soon ;)

PS: I made a really quick and crappy drawing of what I think would be ( with some work) an improved composition, se what ya think hehe.

Nice sketches (especially) here, so just some general nitpicking:
- I can see you like using accidental (secondary) lights, but in some cases it's not bright enough (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=817460&stc=1&d=1257097951), so it doesn't even looks like light, in other cases (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=825693&stc=1&d=1257823291) you use it ... just because you like using secondary lights (I can't possibly imagine that any ligh source could do that on a sunny day in a desert what you rendered in that latter one.) Accidental lights are cool to play wiht but use them wisely and not by all means.
- Lack of cast shadows on your pictures is sometimes mildly, sometimes more disturbing. ( like in this case (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=806529&stc=1&d=1255919332) The righ arm should cast cristp shadow on the torso, the head should cast crisper shadow on the wing.)
- Some issues with composition (Like in this case (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=832488&d=1258516162). Ships and clouds are arbitrarily placed on the sky, so even if I figure out that you wanted to show some kind of a spaceport here, it doesn't work, it doesn't have focus.
- Last but not least: Do some experiment with more saturated, more wivid colors! All your pictures look kinda pale.

Great creative work man! Some really neat ideas in here. Really love it.
Guess you could improve a bit on your rendering and get away from the kinda muddy look. That will sure take you to the next level. But yea great work overall!

Hey man, long since I was here.. and damn this is great :D Your latest stuff is really fresh. Especially the latest robot.
Great to see your progress on the miniature robots too.
I was thinking a bit about your digital works, you need to work the atmosphere of the enviros. The piece with the giant statue is great, but the depth ruins it. Before you flooded it the piece had the same over-all sharpness and depth wasn't really there. Some atmosphere, misty grayish thickness would've really up'd the piece a bit.
Also your characters and creatures need some more attention to focal points, I'm thinking of the viking how the area around his head has the same amount of details and contrast as the horses feet. Smaller details and stronger contrast around focal points will make them easier to read as the eye have some spots to rest at :) it'll balance the piece.
Anyhow, nice to see some stuff again!
cheers

Don't know if I'm roboted out yet, there may be a couple more lurking around...
First one I'll post tonight is a new "smally" .. 5x7's are a little bit more roomier than the 4x6's... and I've fallen in love with my detailing brushes...

I should post more this evening or tomorrow, depending when I get the digital versions of some big boys done...
