View Full Version : Duman's Sketchbook

I finally decided to start a sketch book. If I want to be a concept artist, then I think a sketch book critiqued by my peers is a good step in the right direction.
So a little bit about me.
I am currently a student at the Kendall College of Art and Design. I am working with a digital illustration major and hope to one day become a concept artist.
I dabble in everything from weapon, character and creature design, but have been focusing on environments as of late.
More recent work can be fond in subsequent pages.

And sorry about having the images smashed so close together. Im still trying to get the hang of how CA does the image posting.

I wouldn't say they are really good, but thanks for the comment.
And I figured out how to post pics correctly, so all further updates should be a little less cluttered.
Im going to try to update this sketchbook once or twice a week.
And hopefully, with some helpful critiques and advice, you'll see some improvement of my meagre skills.

Daarken's tomb king tutorial motivated me to do some character stuff.
I want to color it now. But Im not sure how to go about that right now. I'll have to save that for when I get back.

Hey, I have been trying to do a speed paint a day for a week with
Datameister.
They are not very good, but they are just 40 minute practices. I really need to get better with textures and lighting.

Really quick update.
Actually kind of like this one. Watched Whit Brachna's speedpaint demo again, and this piece is inspired by one of his.
Something like 40-50 minutes.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c268/Duman123/speedpaint23.jpg
Hmmm, Im going to start looking into posting larger, higher quality images. I think photobucket is making them one cookie cutter size right now. So I may be able to post some higher res images in the near future.

Wonderful use of brushes there Duman. You really excel at more industrial design. What do you enjoy drawing?

Hey Duman, I like your designs and your environmentals. Often your people are bringing down the overall quality though. You could always just skip them :P

Hey, don't I know you guys from somewhere?
Ha!
But this is strange. Here I thought that I sucked at brush application and texture and that industrial design was a weak point of mine. Weird.
As for the characters, I agree with you on some, but not all. Some are just really, really quick little guys, but others I think help and contribute to the story.
But I'll work harder at that from now on!
So here is a little tribute to SpaceMan Spiff of Calvin and Hobbes.

It has taken me far too long to update this page. I need to work on this stuff more.
A lot more.
I discovered this really cool feature on this site. The "whatevers" of the week. The creature thread is looking really promising, so I'll have to get cracking on that.
But until then, here are some fourty minute speedpaints.

good day sir :). I just went through your book, and it seems to to me you need to do some practice with saturation and desaturation, it will help you define the distance better in environments. "The more distant the less saturated" is a good rule to remember.
Im sorry if that's already been said.

I absolutely know what your talking about. I need to keep remembering that lowering the opacity is not the same as desaturating. I will definitely keep that in mind.
Here are some quick thumbnails of the insect creature Im trying to do for the COW.
Which one do you think I should render?

Finished the fish guy. Kind of.
Giant Flygantorpe
Description: This massive fish is unique to the planet Rythan 4. It spends a good amount of time slowly swimming the tropical seas of the planet feeding on the floating seaweed found there. Oddly enough, and for reasons not yet known, this fish will often leave the water and begin to fly. It does not so much fly as it does float. It's massive body is held aloft by the large amounts of lighter than air gases contained inside. Its sides so bloated and skin so stretched, the interior organs are slightly visible. We don't know where they go from there or why. But we do know that it seems often totally fixated on the luminescent lure in front of its face. Perhaps this lures small cleaning organisms close. Maybe it helps them see in the dark clouds. Maybe they just like glowing things. We may never know.

Artist: Duman
Concept: Magma Hound
The magma hounds are beasts that live near volcanically active areas. They are named as such for their resilience to lava, and their unique use of it. The hounds gather large quantities of lava in their mouth, and use it as a sort of shaping tool. They use the lava to create large dens under active volcanic sights.

Hey mate. I like your last cow work, in my opinion its much better than the previous one's :)
I think you should try to avoid more in your works these "raw" lines, like in the right down corner of your latest cow work. These one's on the creature are pretty cool, some more thick some more thin, that's the right way. In your previous cow works these too "raw" elements appear too, like these slime falling from worm tentacles or lava from red hood of doom head.
I hope these will help a bit, and sorry for my poor english if something isn't clear enough.

I really wish I could get more than two pieces (of low quality work) out a week.
College is sucking my time away, but Im not complaining. Its fantastic work. The downside being it is usually too big to scan in on my crappy printer. If anyone cares, I could try an get some digital pics of them up here.

Cool of you to stop by my SB.
That was probably the most encouraging words I ever got :)
You are showing great progress over the pages.
I would encourage you to do what I always neglected (and still do) Do studies of objects at your desk.(don't spend too long (30 minutes tops)) Paint them as they look, not as you envision them. And study light. I was looking at your "Orks". Decide where your light source is and then make a light side and a shadow side. Put (in the case of the skin tone) your most saturated green on the rim where light meets the shadow. I'm not sure that made any sense.

Lander: Thanks for the sage advice. I really do agree that I need to work on my light. I believe I was once told that light is one of the most difficult aspects of art to really grasp. Something about it flowing and moving like water.
Anyway, maybe I will get around to some of those sketches this summer, we'll see.

You got some nice stuff goin on in here. I really dig some of the 3d stuff, and in that last post i like what u are doing with the directional lighting. You've got some nice creatures too, i especially like this one (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c268/Duman123/COW10-2.jpg).
The crit i would offer is to try to really push your lighting more often. Adding contrast, directional lighting, bounce light, rim light, core shadows etc. really help objects to go back into space and sit well on the canvas. A lot of the drawings in here are good but could be great with a bit more attention to that.
If i were to narrow it down even further i'd just say to just pay attention to lighting in general, when u think about it, and are outside the house.
Look for where light hits, where the shadow starts where the core begins (if there is one) is there a rim light? what does it define of the form? and just in general pay attention to how it operates.
It's not the kind of thing to just learn all of a sudden, but just when it hits ya just soak it in, then when u come home try to apply it to the canvas. Lighting can do a lot of cool stuff, i think that last one is one of your best in terms of lighting, just gotta do it more. Cheers! and thanks for stopping by my sketchbook!

The COW pieces are great. Would like to see more thumbs! Also, your enviroment paintings have a great setting but appear very scratchy. Try making thumbs for these as well with hard blocked or soft blocked brushes and then use the same technique to work one out.
You did a nice job on the Warhammer40k characters too - I'm always excited to see people doing 40k pieces. Keep up the good work and don't stop posting. :)
