Starting a sketchbook. Just some stuff for starters. At least this way someone will see this crap besides me. Sorry some of them are so dark. Think I overdid it trying to fix the contrast on my cheap camera photos. Critique welcome. Definitely need more practical practice but the weird alien blob stuff is fun.

And on to today's drawing. I'm going to try and at least have one a day to put in here. I've really gotta find a better way to photograph these. It's yet another Stimpy happy nose goblin. Enjoy my pure unbridled genius!!!!

Nice stuff so far. I'd say focus getting the realistic stuff down. It's not bad but it could use some work.

Very nice shading though.

Thanks people. Agreed I need to get some life drawing in. Hopefully in a month or two I'll be back in a life drawing class. I'd been in one before years ago and found it very rewarding but after years of not sticking with it I'm trying to get the juices flowing again. Although I had a tendency to misplace people's anatomy in wild proportion errors I do miss charcoal and newsprint. Also going to have to bite the bullet one of these days and attempt color.

Again appreciate the feedback and encouragement.

This took me forever. I give myself an "E" for effort. Legs are kinda funky, eyes have a weird slant, not enough contrast in the shading (my photo editor made it look better than it is), overall the photo I drew from kicked my A....

Cool points if you actually recognize this guy.

Ahh yes and here's the reference photo

Really let loose with the corny on this one. Just a line drawing for now. I'll go back later and either finish it up in pencil or pen. Sorta a monster I came up with for the thieves pit from Dante's Inferno. Hands look a bit iffy.

Nothing to post today except a 2 page attempt at color which frustrated me to such a degree it now has the F word scrawled all over it and it's crumpled in my trash. So instead some old abstract messy stuff that's probably more or less irrelevant, but screw it it's my sketchbook. I believe some of this stuff was completed drunk.

Haven't updated in forever. I've been in an art class and a mental hospital. I'm now free slightly educated and fully medicated ready to get my draw on. Next semester color theory.

Here's some of what I've been up too. I'm a community college big shot so my better artwork is hanging in distinguished community college libraries and hallways.

Bad photo quality all round I know, with big annoying yellow dates. It sucks but I don't feel like photographing it all again.

The landscape up there is Antarctica and that's my current baby. It took allot of trial and error to figure out how to draw blocks of ice and not make them look like rocks. Proud of that one. Never done landscape before.

Critique and feedback always welcome.

Today's practice. Might add more later. This has some problems I can see. Lily's left eye is a bit off, not too sure about the mouth, and it's drawn too carefully. But good portrait practice nd I think it does look like Lily Munster. I think I did OK hitting the 6B really hard because I have a tendancy to go too light so I got some contrast going.

Childhood crush done just for fun by the way.

More drawing later. Found a deer skull that's calling my name.

Committing to getting drawing in every friggin day come hell or high water. Want to experiment, practice, and improve.

Work on hands. The noble hands of a laborer, hand bones, and some roughly drawn surreal stuff to clutter up the composition just because I felt like it.

Noticed I make assumptions about proportion. Fingers too thin and long, thumb too far back. I beleive those aren't problems in this sketch though the proportions are only roughly accurate however I shall practice hands more as they're always a difficult thing for an artist to master and I enjoy drawing them.

looking good! the organic forms remind me of Yves Tanguy's work - ( http://www.matta-art.com/tanguy/invis.jpg )

Good eye Bunny! The organic forms are directly inspired by Yves Tanguy and have become an obsession for me. I draw these things constantly as a sort of exercise in my subconcious. I wouldn't be ashamed to call them "Yves Tanguy fan art"

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah it's easy for portraits to get skewed and I battle with them every time. Will keep working on them.

I'm working on a design for a role playing game that needs illustrations. It's a non paying job that was posted here. I'm trying to do some barbarian designs for them. This here is the first design I came up with I think I'll complete. Could use all the criticism I can get. Haven't taken a stab at fantasy art or rediculously brawny figures in some time.

Frank Frazetta I am not.

I'll give this some work then probably upload it to the critique center. I'd like to be able to actually do this sort of thing for a living someday.

Barbarian progress. I feel like I'm 13 again. I think it's passable, but it's not what I'd hoped for. Might scrap it and try again. Maybe I should run it by the well I guess it'd be called "client" and see if they like it. Just looks really childish to me, but then again it's not meant to be Rembrant.

And BEHOLD!!! The mighty terrible marvel of atomic science! I present the horror of the RADIOACTIVE BLACK CHICKENSNAKE!!!!!

842601

This was for art class tonight. Pen and ink montage of 3 subjects. I think the studies aren't bad of the snake and the rooster, the rooster I think was the strongest of the two. I kinda played with the snake reference which was mostly black and tried to add the gleam of it's scales but I don't think it came through. The monster is thrown in for fun. This is what happens when a rooster gets it on with a snake while being blasted with ATOMIC ENERGY RAYS! I need to send this brilliant SOB to hollywood. I'll be rich beyond my wildest dreams!

Was up late messing with this barbarian design. Next time I'm going to base the figure on photo reference and make sure I have a pencil sketch I'm happy with before inking or photoshopping.

Need to work on light source accuracy, action lines for dynamic scenes like this, general anatomy, proportion. Photo reference should help with anatomy and proportion for the next 2 fantasy designs.

The requester seems to like it however which is nice.

Face looks terrible again. Used a model reference this time. Not sure what I can do about the big black spot on her left cheek. Using a model did improve the figure however and I could reference it for light source.

Blacking in the eyes is just because they were completely f'd up. Makes her look a little more evil I suppose, but that's just an excuse.

Finding character design in general a little overwhelming. Gives me a new appreciation for people who do this stuff.

Worth it at lest for the figure practice.

3rd and final design I'm working on for the RPG, though the lady barbarian will probably be done over. A dwarf based on Russian industrial propoganda. In the end I want it too look like a "produce more for the war effort" kinda poster without losing it's fantasy element. I think keeping the waistline high makes it obvious enough it's a dwarf. Dwarves being the captains of industry in most fantasy genres, and Russia with it's 5 year plan, they kinda mix. Besides makes it more interesting to me.

But enough of this dwarves and sword weilding naked women and giant fire breathing pigbats and what not, need to get back to studies.

Barbarian dame again. It's construction extensively cataloged in the critique section. Feels like I've spent an eternity on the broad. Hell of allot better then that gangly skinny one uptop that looks like an animation cell from an episode of Bevis and Butthead. This one more like an episode of He-Man, but it's improving.

Thanks buddy. Broke out that old Marvel book again by the way. Simple, but good stuff in there I'd forgotten.

I've gotta redo that Barbarian vs. Chickensnake (Basilisk) I did the first time because damn it sucks. Since I really don't want to do an armored up corny barbarian again I'm drawing Orion. Always thought Orion was a very heroic character so a good offset to girl skeletor up there and at the same time a little crazy. Orion threatened to kill every animal in the world so some goddess sent a giant scorpion to kill him before he could. I like my heros a little nutter. Mainly I'm trying to use this as a chance to do a heroic greek style figure. This will probably end up a rough drawing for a completed cleaner version unless it really starts to work. I want to nail the pose and anatomy.

Think this SOB gonna work. Has a Greek/Norse flare to it and elements from medeival woodcuts I've seen depicting the Gauls. Now if I can finish it with some style, get some good shading and do something interesting with Orion's bronze club I think this can be a winner. Compositionally I feel there's not enough happening on the right side of the page. Crop, background, whatever I can make it work.

Quick still life of a mask I own. That's a contact mic taped over the mouth. Tried to keep it minimal. I overwork things.

Didn't realize the figure on the bottom left was a woman until I had it drawn. I do these with no pre planning to see what happens. That's kind of interesting how it came out. Might be worth it's own drawing as a surreal work. Looks obscene which makes me uncomfortable. A nice ugly look at one's own repressed misogyny I suppose.

A wing I started this morning. I'm abandoning this design. The idea is to draw a seraphim (6 winged angel) by drawing the first group of 3 wings then mirroring the image to six, then doing a separate drawing for the figure and lay it over the wings in photoshop. However this is starting to look too much like an amateurish design and the whole concept is starting to look like it's going to come out really flat.

I'm going to try it again as a study combining elements of bird wings from photo reference and an anatomy study but I think I need to take a break. Although many people think art is relaxing it can actually be very draining, especially after hours of concentration.

The RPG still needs more designs and needs them quickly so I cooked this up. It's called a biata. All I really know about them is they have feather eyebrows. Did the drawing with pencil, then a pitt pen, then uploaded into photoshop and cleaned everything up.

Any critiques on the monochrome shading or anatomy?
