Like the brushes; nice refractive quality.
Have you tried Prisma colours with pastel on top? The car designer I met used that combination. The pastels were the last think to go on. Experiment.

Just got some chalk pastels before i saw your reply. hehe. :) I got the prismacolor nupastels. I think they may use masks in that technique pastel last. [edit.] actually , Im wrong. Tim Rugendykes' book has techniques which go both ways with the markers on top of pastel and vice versa.*
Im just finding out how surprisingly easy it is to layer and rub out pastels.

An update for the bike. However did a couple of chalk pastel pictures of hamish and andy from their 'caravan of courage' trip. They took an hour each.
I figure theres a trend of me thinking too much right before I draw, so I just drew all the sketches- without thinking. Just totally switched off. Almost like when I dropped into the skateboard ramp for the first time. If I went in rigid I got smashed. But relaxed worked better.
What was more weird was the bike sketches were done in cold weather, lighting from a orange lamp post, and on one of those uncomfortable benches. the blocks are from Skeching, drawing techniques for product designers but the bike was from memory of the model.
What I noticed with the abstracts is that they seem to need a pattern to unify them more, so pieces look like they belong, and not so mismatched. I tried to apply that to the bike shapes. The fairing would be like leaves, carbon/graphite like straight angular shapes and so on.
A new feature on the bike is that the battery and chassis covers (motor inside rear rim) -open like wings. I remembered how awesome it was when you see the seagulls land or take off, their wings do this crazy thing where they open and fold seamlessly... Its like they are invisible when they walk up to you! All neatly tucked away hehe.
Also on the side of fiction, I put space for a gyroscope (think ship gyroscopes) for drifting around corners. :)

Lovely loose pastel sketches. Yeah, relaxed is always best. Wicked ideas for the bike. Gyroscope would be cool.

Hehe, yes so far as being not thinking... feels like page 1 again :) ,
Possibly there was a stage where the theory was too much at once.
Perhaps the best way is to find out some things as I go but read little bits now and then. Not massive chunks. So I can relate to them
closer as I work -Especially for problems...sounds really challenging though.
Some things are not so relevant right now.
:) Experimenting more with the pastels, life drawing at the top of the page helped.
Pencil seems really meticulous for some of the landscapes.

A self portrait from photo reference. The photo was a little on the dusty side so looks like I made a um..
'symbol in my mind' drawing of the hair.
Must of forgot most of the technique in bobby's classes.
Then there's some cars in mixed media.
I mentioned a carbon pencil earlier, but went with black marker instead for things like the very darkest of the shadow. Black pencil seems
to work ok as well.
I think the next step is more of the 3rd person car drawings but from reference. Cars are most familiar.

At the time I posted the portrait, I saw mistakes starting to appear.I'm really not happy with it even more now. But I feel I'm not sure how to make it any better. I see examples of good ones and compare and ... I try adding detail but then its weird like Im not in control... My hair's pretty unruly perhaps that looks not so good on it's own. Not sure about the mug stain.

3d modelling is getting very quick- little things like knowing that big to small rule, and what is actually visible when finished makes it possible to make some descisions in advance and speed through not needing adjustment later. One of the things I used to do was tweak and tweak the model till it 'looked right'. and then hit undo because I couldnt interpret what I saw as well...
The kombi van model was somewhere between 4- 6 hours. I stopped here as just the proportions are needed.

Continued with the african woman. I had some reference images of african culture and closeups of their skin also open in photoshop, the statue of the woman was not used for the shading -just the sketch of it.
It was really difficult to make out the geometry and how the light would hit the two. I had some idea of the landmarks of the face, but only remembered really basic solids for the rest of the body. It went in circles.
The rhino 5 beta has the 2pt perspective option so maybe that would be good for the harrier. I got the correct sizes and scale in but I'm not confident it will turn into anything at the moment.
I saw a seagull do the funniest thing the other day. A massive yawn! haha, I had the giggles for the rest of the day.

Since the sketchbook's been up for just over a year, I decided to sell the 360 and Wii as a little celebration. I haven't given up. I know theres a ton of unfinished work (it's getting really obvious) and in many cases looks worse ...or I havent given it my all and got frustrated and smashed something. Well I could have done my equivalent of almost nothing and played video games and be in the exact same position as last year.
It was difficult to delete everything from the games consoles memory... but It was to be careful about stored information. Haven't played them in ages, it's just the pc games that were the distraction, going cold turkey now.
Purchased some books from the sale. [ed.] Some design studio press books (created by Scott robertson). The Drawthrough collection and 'cosmic motors' books. They are picture books but perhaps I want to be motivated by something more familar.
Between life drawing painting and the selling of the consoles, There was a little bit of time to ninja sketch some people draw birds and work on those reflections.
I used the textures and lighting setup from the official Ferrari f430 photos to work over a really old model. Though this time at least ...I hope it shows more knowledge. Some parts would be easier to model still. The rims were painful to paint.
It helps to imagine the car as points on a sphere*.

The Bird feathers are pretty complicated, depending on the bird there's translucency, specular, layering and shadows. Possibly why there is not lots of art with them flying or wings open.

Remember the Vtol concept from page 1? I revisited it with Greg Broadmore reference images and a penguin render paintover.
Greg broadmore made concepts for District 9. I particularly liked the Exo suit color scheme and surfaces, so tried something similar.
Theres a few design faults I noticed this time around such as the strength of the arms and visibility from the seat.

the seagull in pos 256 looks good, i think the shadows could be a little darker, maybe add more blues/purples considering that it's in a shadow. The African girl is coming along nicely, looking forward to seeing her progress :D

The oil painting took about a term and a half. I repainted the water and clouds a few times though when I got the colours wrong.
For example I would see the middle clouds as green instead of brown and I missed really subtle things like the violet in the upper sky and mountains. My teacher helped with the mountains. What I would also do is flip the ref image and it seemed to refresh how I saw the colour.
This may be the last oil painting for a while as I swapped for life drawing.
The (laughing) kookaburra was partly from a reference photo I took and the rest was made up. I wanted to experiment a bit with ink textures...hmm messy.

Oh man, your ID work is sick. Really really good draughtsmanship, I love the bike towards to the top of the page.
I think my only suggestion is that it looks like your work has 2 very distinct halves, try and bring that grasp of form and space from the ID work to your figures and other drawings. Start thinking about everything else in the same kind of planes and perspective way.
Sort of like the bird here (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1025437&stc=1&d=1279896389), it has that same technical feel to it, and it looks really awesome.

Thanks mate,
Having lots of problems doing the perspective and cast shadows at the moment, tried some Scott robertson matte shading.
I usually start with the outline or a shape so that could be the problem for more imaginative things. They may be missing the part where I 'build' them correctly .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The robot painting was for a challenge on sketchaholic. Odd, I just jumped straight in and lots of things from the last page seem to have appeared in it.
I see the robot, some of the vtol sketch resurfaced from imagination. And a little of the city.
The text at the top is a font 'airstrip one', a free font.
Studies scattered around the sides are from Scott Robertson's Shading Matte surfaces dvd. I followed it a bit verbatim, then did my own and it was hard. Not so much problems with the accuracy of the lines, media and the quality, well as at the start of the sketchbook. But trying to place cast shadows and chosing the right tones.

Forgot to mention but its now week 5 of working closer to home, there's about 1/4 to 1/5 more time in the weekdays to work on things.
Started off with the idw topic 'presidential limo' . Should be easy right? Ive modelled cars before and could make some sort of panel presentation like the Vtol on the last page. I had the ideas and the reference planned out but... couldnt quite build it...(told me so) heh, look at the box car I drew before I went blank.
So I did some (isometric?) section drawings. Last time I did this was in year 10, just before I used turbocad and imsi. So it's been a while. Rather important to draw boxes for this. Later they will combine with matte surface shading technique.
They seem to be going pretty well though, given I could tighten them up with templates, rulers or on the computer later.
Liking using ink for the other work.

Still working on the car drawings.
Most of the panel is over the weekend, yesterday and friday. But it was almost non stop. The week before was mostly modelling on the bike and fixing up old renders with keyshot 2. Amazing piece of software but a little expensive. So worth it.
Had an idea for a 32' Ford redesign by Shelby. It was odd that a little of Battlefield bad company 2 reappeared in the render. Curse those video games hehe. Mmm smoke and fire. Got the texture from royalty free photos and painted some over keyshot render.
May go for gull wing doors but reqires lots more detail and interior. So I put the split line in the standard spot.

Continuing with the perspective and line drawings. Basically I'm watching the Matte shading and Basic persective form drawing dvds (well digital downloads). What I do is I think I've got a fair bit of it already.. so I go to parts where I think I'm stuck or want to know what Scotts' thinking is.
I did all the excercises but may try some again soon they were a bit rough when on my own..
That must be the best way to do them.
There's also the bennu bird I revisited, and a self portrait for International Self Portrait day, November 1st.
It started as a pencil sketch from a photo, It was actually pretty close once scanned in, I just shifted the eyes slightly, maybe 1cm if you were to measure. Pencil shading was a bit of a waste .
This is all by eye still, no eye dropper/color picking/layer over the top of the reference.

Been on holidays last week and the week before, so most of this is a backlog of life drawings. Regretably they got creased and folded for the trip home.
It's usually a fairly packed bus late at night and gotta rush out of class so I dont miss the hour and a half bus ride home and wait another hour...
This is about one third of them as many are gesture drawings, faint and take lots of time to put them all in. I think the larger size helps now, as there's less scaling.
Took the photos in fairly bright sunlight. Still need to adjust the white. Perhaps the digital camera auto adjusts the white out.
For my birthday on the 12th (well not really, I was already alive.) I was given a large desk lamp to draw under. It has a 800mm reach which is handy.
I think some of the value problems with the lighter side of the scale come from not enough light on the drawings.
Found some time for some perspective and Scott Robertson studies.

I'm not sure if I should worry too much, considering the light in class on the paper looks similar to the photo anyway. It's just as far as presentation of them goes, it could be better.

More birds and planes study.
I think most of the troubles with the Tawny frogmouths are from making my own shapes and trying to attach real life geometry of branches to it,
rather than the reverse of putting the naturally occuring shapes into the background and going from there. So there was a photo underlay but it was necessary to paint over it to face the light and have the overlaps/tangencies adjusted.
Also I Rediscovered the work of Peter Trusler. In particular Birds of australians gardens This is the most lifelike paintings I've seen so far.
There was some more photos of birds taken at the zoo in november, but only for identifying the previous photos and finding new birds.

I thought I would leave it there.
It got really difficult to lose the digital part. And going in circles.
Perhaps it could be colored... but I'm not sure at this time what I'm doing when I color things, or start in color.
It feels like it gets there by accident.
Interesting though. One of the longer ones... I didn't know if I would even get that far.

Reworked the Lamborghini, and continued onto Matte surface shading 2.
Lots of things changed from before. At least 6 hours work on it some days, at least that's constant.

Jumped ahead just a little at the end of the second shading dvd, and rendered a countach. The Reference photos were good for the placement-
blueprints good for the sections.
The rhino model set up the perspective and overall proportion.. which is a pain to draw. Modelling is much more fun for that.
Still, once that is down the boxes, spheres and whatnot still get used to detail.
Rather tricky to do nice lines on the tablet. I lose a lot of time to repeating.
Forgot to mention, the scanner adds a bit of red and blue to the chalk/ink renderings I decide to leave in.

very nice work on that John singer Sargent study, i think you got the values down well on that one :D sweet work rendering those boxes & spheres, something i need to do as well and i love the plane in this last post, you could try using a hard brush in order to get that metalic feel, at the moment it's a bit too soft, you have to vary the opacity a lot when working with a hard brush though. it really has been some time since there was a bird in the update, i can't wait :D

I swear I must have lost about 8 days last week to the heat in sydney. All temps at least 30. There was a lot of birds with their mouth open.
A kookaburra looked like it was happy though. Funny bird.
I did promise some life drawings, but I also forgot it was the summer break for classes, so maybe next week or something. It hasn't logged up much. bleh!
And also I lost a little a5 sketchbook
that was probably the first with actual complete looking drawings...and that's a lot of paper so far. arrgh!
Not all bad though. But gotta get these things to the side.
The bike I tried to shift away from the more 'ferrari' look and referenced rc cars and personal style. Left the lines on
to seperate parts. It's probably too far to go when I put engineering details in instead of suggestion. And not the correct program for this.
Apologies for posting it so big.

Just a bit of fun, heres a Pied Currawong. Certainly one of my favourite birds I see at the moment -
they are so jumpy and comical. Saw one drop a insect off a branch and it appeared to do some sort of
jumbled fall and clump into the leaves to get it. Pretty funny :)
Going for the christopher pope/ trusler look. Pretty difficult however I'm not sure it is a good idea for it were to look a similar style of sorts.
Lots of anatomy and figures and life drawing on the side, getting tuition by Andrew Hou
for some character designs. I'll leave it later to post it all(and the life drawings)... I think it looks really
random/unorganised if ungrouped. Mostly critiques on lighting and anatomy is all I can say right now.

From over this weekend, a color Still life.
It's of the (rather annoyingly non-working) plasma cutter from the
Dead space 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Space_2) game. I can confirm limbs are still intact so it will not work too well with a necromorph invasion.
I got the colors and values pretty close but later decided to push the contrast and saturation a little,
given it was looking a tad flat. Probably should have forseen some of the lighting and composition issues earlier...oh well. Uses lots of perspective.
The new lamp was better though. May need to calibrate the monitor. The edge of the

circles about now so I think best to leave for a while to get a fresh eye.
I did want to do some more environments and incorporate models into them. I'm looking at shapes rather than form though.

@Black Spot
I do remember a technique for the smudging somewhere... I think it was in one of Bobby Chuis videos. Actually... it was unknowingly the one
I started with for the portraits on page one. I dont think it works for me As as soon as I lose concentration it got out of hand and went in circles. Feels uncontrollable.
Real oil paint may have problems due to the toxicity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Practicing spaces and tones for this reworked one. From the past 3 or 4 days but with many lapses in concentration.
Trying to avoid overlapping strokes and suggested detail with too much contrast. Maybe that was the problem with the mountain

It's hard how I can't look to the side and see the edges. So I put another 5 hours into it, tell me what you think.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I Think what has tricked me with the Matte shading 3 copies is I went off the halfway to black system. It appears when
I sampled the examples, they to go to 7/8- not 5 (white surface). I assume it's to make it appear less flat.
So half seem a bit funny to me.
I have used Scott Robertsons line Drawings for learning purposes only. I understand most of the work is in them. It could be a long time to even be close to matching the quality of them.
Also Decided to rework a lamborghini gallardo sv concept. I tried Andrew Hou's advice to start with shapes and increase the reference.
I flipped the image lots and kept looking at the small window.

Not sure what to do with the seagulls at the moment. I dont see near as many since working

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rest of the Andrew Hou Schoolism assignments, a Still life, and then into reflective surfaces from
Scotts Hot wheels drawing book and the other product design books.Reflections are much easier than I thought. I guess it was fear or something. The technical drawings are not bad now. Ellipses can always
be corrected but faster to do them well freehand in the sketch.
But I definitely need more explosions to illustrate the really bad concepts people will need to escape!
Also form, composition, perspective and anatomy.

The 3rd Loomis from the left has a face on his butt. I was going to say about the assignment figures that the proportions could be worked on, but then you went and nailed the action shot ones.
I hope that's not a number plate off centre on the car. The screw holes are too big - is it being propped up?
seagulls
May 31st, 2011, 08:26 AM
I think the later assignments were a bit ambitious for me. I wanted to fix the propotion of the figure
but lots of other things seemed in chaos. I dont think I could fix the picture by a good figure alone.
Must have missed the centre line on the car in the sketch when placing the number plate and eyeballed
it instead.
Those are Hot wheels proportions - based of one of the 1/18th scale hot rods in the book. Some things are
a tad simplified. I know that from using some as reference for 3d models.

Fair task to read- Maybe a couple of hours , 10 minutes to quickly skim... But
I find it really hard to look at my work at the moment. Some things had lots
of emotion. Can remember things I was doing pretty clearly.
Black Spot
We get a time limit set to do each drawing before the model changes pose
or a break. If I recall correctly ,
*gesture drawings are 2 minutes
*ones standing up are 5- 10 minutes, 5 minutes if arms are raised or awkward position.
*ones with tone and in a lying down or relaxed position are 15 - 30 mins.
*portraits are usually when the model doesnt show or is sick, so 30 minutes
or 20. Other people in class.
The ones under 10 minutes are not shown there.

Reworked the Industrial design of the week 'Arctic rally vehicle'. I used the
old model from page 2 for the base. And continued from there. It got pretty
messy in planning. Had the sketches at the same time as the canvas -but in
order. For some reason It feels I've had like a constant headache the past
two weeks. Like a bit sleepy all the time. Lot of sugar in the diet too.
Theres too many references to list for imaginative works now. Lots of books, photos, past work.

Probably the most noticable is the Scott Robertson forms. For this one I also

Had a little bit of time to sketch and paint this one. Location is a little down the road from where I live.
Setting up a pencil sketch there would have been good, but its pretty close
to a busy road and footpath (plus the threat of seagulls :) ). Working from the photo,
I attempted to move things around and
change the absolute color to try and get something more appealing. Originally there was
a lot more boats, but It looked a bit too crowded or populated.
But also moving other things like the rocks and jetty to try and fit a little bit
more of the location in without doing a panorama. The foreground boat seems to be causing problems,
too many greebles near the bottom.
And I'm continuing to shift paint at this point before stopping.
Any suggestions are ok.

I wanted to have the boats more of the focal point. Or where the lines pointed too. Not working for me now. I think the camera position may be a lot of the problem. Maybe higher would show more.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Knew something was wrong with the perspective on a lot of work on this
page. So I set up one of those grids from Carl Dobskys perspective video,
just a 1pt. For the ones from imagination really bugging me.
I seem to have trouble with those vanishing points and knowing how far back
the far of the cubes are in space. Messed up the boat, and the car is way
off on the ground grid- So it points to a high horizon. A lot of the shapes
dont recede very well. Maybe building a rough environment in rhino first
would help.

Really been quite busy with driving lessons this past 3 weeks. Stressful and time draining.
It almost puts my day off if I hafto drive and think about it. But a lot of people say I
should be ready for the test later this week.
So just a small rework of the bike is all that's completed for the moment.
The color before I think was causing problems. Its a bit artificial looking. Pink seems
particularly off.
Moved the shapes around so the picture is more representable. My life drawing teacher liked it.
Obviously the work with anatomy is not very good. We agreed some of the studies are too close to a photo.
This is after I changed to a much closer to home drawing class.
The old one was at the same distant location as the old workplace which was the problem.
And the start of a painting of a jet. I think It will work as a mostly matte rendering.
Trying to decide on the environment and shapes from those thumbnails. Should it be energetic
and bustling or calm and menacing? Battle damaged, or well maintained?
Perspective and a simple (painted over) model is coming from rhino3d.

Agreed. There is not a lot more I think I could do to make it work in real life
without a full size mockup of somesort...
The seat is well, go kart size. I think originally it would look mad if his head was at the top of the bike originally but...
big blind spots in front. Kanedas' bike was made in real life and it had similar issues.
Many replicas made it so the seat was bumped up and you could see over the windshield.
Way back near the beginning there may be an overlay of a person seated. They likely need their arms bent a bit
for leverage. I would say the posture seems different for a bike than the image there. More active.
Just before he jumps off and purchases life insurance and full safety gear. :)

It could be the lamp. Makes the strong cast shadow . Thinking of filtering it a bit. Pictures
of cameras in advertsing they dont put the shadow there or anything else in the scene. Always really simple.
Haha, oh it was fun driving through. Just out of curiosity of all these years. My diet is not good
as it is to go regular. I was too cautious with the car to really bask in the maccas moment. Have the money ready and look at the menu before you go through!

Thanks lav

Interesting you say that, the birds are from america and the artist is from france.
Could be the use of flowers and watercolor.

Revisiting the monaro for some form practice. Vital to have different photo angles or blueprints of the panels to not make anything up.
The angle of lighting is supposed to be the same as the original -however it's overcast there.
Pretty much on my own apart from the spaces. Whats the bet I could make it reflective.

Apologies to everyone who looked and didnt see the image for the last post.
I'm not sure what happened. Internets being a little unpredictable my end for
the past month. Sometimes pages will stop loading halfway through.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, The reflections are really hard right now and Im not 100% sure why... but I would say
the car is a bit too much for a study. So going to leave this one here for
a bit...
The new life drawing class has more variety of models. I dont remember all of the drawings, but I think...
I tried the chalk pastels as the conte(like chalk pastels, but more binder.) pencils had a sharp point
and was taking long to get values and coverage happening. The drawings are not quite in order. I may have sized them here a bit small...
The A10 is mostly working for me.
The self portrait -I dont know. I hope next year goes better. I'm think I am so disorganised.
The copies are from 'ImagineFX presents 'How to draw anatomy' specifically, Ron Lemen. 2010

the monaro looks real good, nice construction and rendering there dude :) looks like the link to where the original photo of the vehicle was has different content now. your life drawings show good progress anatomy wise so keep at it with those. OMG i missed international self portrait day once again... i should remember to join you next year as i've never really done a serious self portrait. really good values in that last post, keep them coming :)

@miycko. Hmm, odd, It redirects from the link from the picture. Look. I'll edit the link out... It's easy to find in google images.
Search 'Holden Monaro'. Its one of the well known pictures.
Thanks mate, life drawing starts again february but barely a scrap since those. :)
November 1st for Sp day 2012, put it in your calendar.:)
@Black Spot
There is something roman about the sp isnt there. Maybe dropping the view to chest level did something... :)
@Wheeljack18
High five! :)

Soooo... I Had an idea for doing some more box art after being on holiday. Originally the idea for 6 months was to
do a Tamiya style R/c monster truck kombi... Then it appeared in early production early december when
looking for Reference.
Scratching that the world probably doesn't need another. Made a resurrection a few weeks ago
on a Caterham seven model from 2008 or so. It may need some work simplifying to turn it to a radio control version.
But I think there may be an idea in scale looking caterham R/c cars.

I love you work man! Your drafts for that bike are amazing, reminds me a bit of AKIRA. What program do you use to render your models? Again, Great work!

Great updates, I love your paintings of the more industrial concept but your human studies are looking great too :D

A radio controlled car sounds fun. Could stick a hamster in as the driver - with goggles.

dude you have mad skills :) that Caterham seven vehicle concept looks wild, can't wait to see how you go about turning it to a radio control car.

I can't believe I missed international self portrait day! Yours looks good, by the way :D the life drawings are very nice, especially the ones that are lit from below.

Hey mate, used rhino3d and vray, keyshot. Then with a loose background plate, (sometimes) get the perspective and go from there painting. Akira is one of my favourites animiated movies. :)
Lav
I think the industrial things there is more interest. :) I usually dont think much of the human drawings.
Black Spot
Dont want to hurt the poor creature. :)

Caterham gets all the credit for the car, I just gotta pull it off making it Rc and an illustration. we'll see. :)
GoGoJojo
I think a lot of people missed it, spread the word! Yes the models are often lit below. not sure why.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Big troubles with the painting reflections still, I'm not sure to jump into the rc further or not like this. Could easily render a pretty accurate pass in rhino. But I think the idea is to see them in my head early rather than have the render dictate the way it may go... the computer's pretty powerful. I wonder if tamiya traces photos for things like wheels.
The portrait is one of three from the portrait workshop. I saw the other 2, an hour after doing them, and they didnt look any good to put up.
The still life is some of the car parts, tools. The car is no batmobile... but I'm nearly obsessive compulsive about it being maintained or detailing like it came from the factory. I dont know a lot of how engines work or interested in improving horsepower. The maintanence manual is as far as I've read up on things.

Dumping that portrait workshop picture in there - does it look like the guy? What was wrong with the others? I like getting the likeness of model even if in rough and it all comes down to proportions. Faces are never static, even with a good model, and catching that likeness can through several stages of ugliness, but if the proportions are right, you will always win in the end. Bit like your life drawing further up - don't treat it any different.

I don't really have a lot to critique, Black Spot already said what I was thinking. But hey, you should do a portrait of your car some time! then you could do a portrait IN a work shop.
