I just found this out, deviant art is now allowing all it's members to create your own online portfolio website totally free. It's free to any member even if you don't pay for your DA account, of course though, if you do have a payed account you have more options.

Is there a catch, like, can you only upload a certain number of images? Does DA retain the rights to your work? I was considering doing a simple redesign of my portfolio site similar to this, and it'd be wonderful if I could just use this instead

You have a limit of images you can upload on the free version. And of course the art is yours. There is a premium version where you have more options, like unlimited images. It´s indeed a cool feature.

If you just have a regular DA account you have a 100 image limit but if you pay for a membership it's unlimited also if you pay you don't have to have a .daportfolio.com in your web domain. I'm actually considering paying the 30 bucks for a year subscription just for that extra perks.

I might think about getting a dA portfolio, since i have a subscription. it seems like a cool idea :3 I checked the portfolio out before. later tomorrow i may just sign up for the portfolio thing and get one.

And i didn't know if you had a free account you could upload only 100 images; i'm staying on my subscription then! XD

I didn't know there was a 100 image limit when you are not a member, but I don't keep that much on DeviantArt.
I guess it could be a good offer, because a lot of places that offer a free web page are shutting down.
I don't need it, because my website is running from my computer. All I pay for is a domain name. If you have a cable modem or simular that is aways online, it is not that hard to do. If you install a PHP, and resetup Windows it might even do the work for you, and set up a online folder. If you can get a webpage to come up when you type in Localhost for the browser address, you can get a domain name and link it to your IP address, your website will be online. Without a domain name your IP address is your domain. Some modems might need the gateway setup for port forwarding. But, it is something to look into.

Seriously though. I know DA has some great artists, and there will be some great folios, but you know there's just as many (if not more) weird ass sucktards who're going to fill their folios with shite.

DA gets use from some of the absolute best comic book guys including Sean Galloway, Mark Brooks, Adam Hughes (I think), Dustin Ngyuen, and one of the alltime greats, Jim Lee. Seeing Lauren Montgomery's drawing via DA is pretty cool as well.

I really was surprised it was free. However, I have to wonder still if employers in the art industry will still frown at it for being hosted by DA? I know when it comes to art examples, they do not like to be shown deviant art things.

I feel like clarifying here. If I'm reading this right, it means that the da portfolio has a limit of 100 images if you are a free member. Which should be more than enough, since a portfolio is meant to be only your best work anyway. Even if you have multiple categories with an average of 10-20 samples in them, it's plenty of space.

Normal dA membership allows you unlimited images on your account; I've been on dA for almost 6 years now and have something like 300 images in my main gallery, plus scraps.

I pay $4 a month for my domain and hosting. I'm considering switching to the free DA portfolio. It's simple, nice, and 100 images is more than enough for a professional portfolio. I mean, ideally, I'd like my portfolio to be 10 or 15 images tops. I'd rather show a few of my best works to potential employers instead of showing them a ton of mediocre shite. The only thing I'm really worried about is the the stigma of having 'hosted by DA' at the bottom and the possibility that every young artist graduating from college in a few years might have the same idea about hosting their portfolio using the DA service.

The layout is rather bland... it seems very similar to Flickr.

I've been considering giving my site an overhaul and making it into a portfolio with other galleries pushed to the background, this probably won't be used instead but it has given me some ideas for it. :)
