Name's Danial, love to draw, got lazy in high school, obsessed over anime, ignored realism all together, graduated highschool, visited ConceptArt, changed attitude, started Community College, finished first semester with a little more knowledge, started second semester, new classes blew my mind, here I am.

Sorry I'm not as active as I want to be, I'm in school and what not, so it's hard to find the time to up stuff.

But I'll try to be more active.

I've got a painting or two to upload tomorrow, and I'll also be updating with daily drawings, whenever I can.

Started school, pretty great teachers overall. Though my Drawing class is only once every Sunday, but I still have 9 hours of free time, so I can draw whenever I want during those times, so any excuse I make of not drawing is just me being plain lazy.

My first attempt at painting, and a bunch of gestures and studies from my Life Drawing and Portrait Drawing/painting class.

Another day of school done, today we went to the muscular structure of the human head, which I think I'm having a lot more trouble than with the bone structure. Though the anatomy test should help a lot, as I gotta study on each part, draw them separately, and memorize em.

Live Models on Wednesday.

Congrats on getting back into drawing and sorting yourself out physically.
You seem to be doing everything right, starting off with strong foundations like life drawing, anatomy, colour and traditional media will do wonders for your progress. Same with the different styles you have going on with the looser gestural poses alongside the longer still-life studies. They are so important and so often overlooked. SO yeah, keep it up, and when your feeling more confident, I look forward to seeing some of your personal work.

Peace

hey good result for a first digital!
Hmm its hard to give this a crit.. i dont know how you started your painting :)
I can tell you what i always do.. ( i dont paint so much digital .. should change that** )
I first sketch it up,, untill i have a little likeness, then block in the colors. like rly rly rough..
** i btw always try to pick a photo that has a good light/dark situation **
Then.. even you only blocked it in it is already getting shape.
Once you did that , just start refining and it pops out quite well :)
especially from distance (^^,)

But again for a first try here,, this a great result!
Keep it up man! ur doing great!

Good job man!

I think you should focus more on the values first before jumping into hues,
so next time I want to see you copy a grayscaled photo - put it on the same canvas and do a 1 to 1 copy (and post the ref!).

DanialGlover
September 2nd, 2009, 03:56 PM
Trying to find some cast models to do digital from. Having hard time finding some haha.

Anyways, approx 1.3 hours spent on this, went pretty quickly, flipped the image and what not, I still gotta figure out how to sight measure digitally haha.

If noone posts by the time I scan/upload todays sketches/studies, I'll edit this post and add em in.

As you can see, my traditional portraits look nowhere near as good as my digital. But this is to be expected as I can't constantly erase over and over on a traditional one. Which is why I'm learning to get it done accurately more often.

its good to see you try to rly catch/feel the form,, but try not to overdo it..
It could help sometimes but its also good to rly try and feel it without putting the line down. Dont know if its makeing any sence at all! :P Good stuff anyway man! Keep it up!

scribble less! theres just too many lines.

On that grayscaled piece:
You have to show us the ref so we can see if you see all the value range in the pic. As of now I see highlights missing and some softening needed, but it might be the original photo, so we can't really tell...

Keep at it and pick a picture with some soft value transition for next time (esp on skin).

danlambert

I disagree with the scribbling, it's giving your sketches a lot of movement, not to mention form.

I don't know if you're doing this already, but something that helps me copy photos digitally with accuracy is having the photo I'm copying in the same file alongside my work area. Like this:
788558

It's much less awkward than having them in separate windows. Just something to try if you aren't already.

You're figures tend to taper towards the head. Incorrect proportions are much more prevalent in your polished, more detailed life drawings. You need to keep pulling back and checking the proportions and overall piece. Don't fall into the trap of getting bogged down in detail. Life drawings in general look good and the digitals are coming along nicely. Keep at it.

EDIT: Congratulations on page 2.

good going on the value studies.. i'd recommend to spend a bit more time on them so they are right.. they look to messy.. the point of doing the studies is to make a painting that is close to the picture.. so a bit more time on softening/hardening the edges and a bit more detail would be in place.

All with all its great you are doing these, they'll help! :D so keep it up!

Doing my sketchbook assignment for my Portrait class, 5 head studies, 1 being from a master artist, I chose Leonardo da Vinci, his old man portrait stuck to me, so I attempted to do it. Not really happy with it, but I'll give it another shot whenever I can.

http://th06.deviantart.net/fs51/300W/f/2009/270/e/3/Sketchbook_Head_Study_1_by_DanialG.jpg

This one is my first head study, being my eyes, in different expressions, proportions are off, but I like the composition of the page, haha.

http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs50/f/2009/270/7/d/Sketchbook_Head_Study_2_by_DanialG.jpg

Part of tonight's stuff, I've still got to do studies of my nose, mouth, ears, and probably a full self portrait.

tdHendrix
September 28th, 2009, 04:33 PM
Nice eye studies. For the old man head, his neck looks kinda long. It will look nicer if you took your eraser and went around the whole profile of the head to make it a harder edge, and then carefully add any shading to the background. Right now everything is mostly all soft edges so it gives it a messy look. You need to clean up your edges and make some hard. Core/form shadows = soft edge, cast shadow = hard edge.

Was really off with my pastel portraits today.
Also, I'm having a really hard time trying to get into drawing from imagination. Like, I'm really scared to "break" into one of my fresh sketchbooks.
I'd like to know if you guys have organized sketchbooks or not.

danlambert
October 12th, 2009, 06:23 PM
If those are 'off', then I don't think you have much to worry about.
I had and still have the same problem with drawing from imagination. I found it helpful to figure out pretty much exactly what I'm going to draw before I sit down, it helps eliminate the hesitant 'what should I be drawing' stuff.
1st page of every sketchbook is always a big scribble for me, the rest is just loose sheets of paper (I tear out each page as I draw on it) Not organised at all. Helps me not be so precious about my drawings, which usually means I don't worry as much about making mistakes. If you make mistakes, you can always throw them away or just not show them to anyone. No reason to be scared

Good luck man

Good to see you practicing this much :)
You indeed have to work on your noses !

And to work on ur bone structure, just practice alot and it'll be okay :)
Keep it going!

It's been 9 days since your last update :(
and I KNOW you've got a computer now...

If 2 weeks pass and there is no update (or a justifiable reason), I'll have to kick you out.

I actually DONT have a computer now. You haven't been on msn so I couldn't tell you. But the laptop my mom gave me, that I "thought" I fixed, was a recalled model. And it crashed, and went up into smokes, but it's not my fault at all. I'm still drawing, I just can't bloody update.

Okay, back to updating as much as I can. My charcoal/pencil work is stuck at school for the rest of the semester, so when I do get done with this semester, i'll upload em.

First two are paintings I did earlier in the semester for my painting class, the portrait looks nothing like me in my opinion, and the landscape was done using some tutorial I can't remember.

The rest are from me trying to learn watercolor.

Will update again tomorrow with some traditional work.

Hey man, good to see you updating.
Some of these watercolours are better than others, although I'm sure you know that already. I can't really give much in the way of crits as I don't really know how to use watercolour. So here's a few suggestions instead, layer your colours more, a lot of them you've just washed a single colour over a large area, where it would really help with depth and visual interest if you added in subtle variations of colour and value. In the sketch of the rolling green hills and fields particularly.
I really like that painting of the tree trunks, I like your choice of colour. I think these could look really good if you went back into them with a fineliner pen or something and added some linework. Something to play around with at least. I think this could also be a good thing to do if you do another watercolour portrait. Maybe find a nice old man or something like that with lots of details and wrinkles and do a sketch of it with a fineliner pen or biro, then work over the top of it with your watercolours. Jason Seiler has some really good examples of this if you can find them.

That's all from me for now, I'm about half way through my references looking for good images for you, so keep reminding me about it!

Peace
Dan

Just letting the people who actually subscribed to this thread(not many) that I'm still drawing/painting. I just decided that I'd wait until after my community college semester is over before I update a lot again. My last day is December 14th, so until then I have a few paintings to post.

(will update with rest of paintings once I take a picture)

Start of a new year! I know I haven't been posting, and I feel like crap for not really working as hard as I should be. Now, this post doesn't have anything interesting, as I don't really make interesting characters. I have to pace myself and do some more vigorous studies for my weakpoints.

The weak points that I know I have, are;
Faces looking too much alike, and shading them the same way.
My anatomy, sucks very bad.
I have no idea how to design characters, at all; clothing, hair, age, etc.
Line work, I'm very sketchy, and have trouble defining edges.

Overall, I need to work on everything, broaden my mind. Now, I know chances are no one is going to look at the thread, I'm fine with that, I don't have much to offer.

Again, no excuse for not uploading anything, I just haven't felt like drawing recently.

Anyways, doing some more photoshop work, starting to get into envronments, after seeing misc studio ghibli art books.

Studies from The Art of Spirited Away, gonna try to do a bunch of them, a lot of them seem very complicated with the perspective, straight lines, etc. Which I'm terrible at.

Also going to try to do more sketchbook stuff. Seems all I've been doing is either photoshop, or sketchbook pro..

cool sketchbook!
keep up the good work

as far as being inspired to keep up your work, just take a little sketchpad with you wherever you go and draw in it every day, no matter how menial the amount. also, those loomis studies are looking good! and take my word for it, they do wonders.

one thing that has helped me recently is actually spending time constructing the image in my mind. go slowly and make sure to start off with solid guidelines and really try to draw the depth, not the image. :]

hope this helps! keep up the good work man

Started doing some figure studies. For now some observation studies, then I'll start doing actual bone/muscle studies of the human body.

Drawing in pencil isn't my forte...but I wanna be able to have a nice linequality eventually heh.

Cool stuff, I like your work. The legs and digitals are looking nice seems like you could work on getting more definitive edges in your digital work though especially on that portrait. Keep it coming...

Thanks, yea I'm not really use to pencil or photoshop yet. But those are the two main medias I wanna use, so I've been doing some studies with them more often.

Here's a still life I started, but couldn't finish cause of the complexity of the composition.

And another sketchbook study. I bought 500 sheets of construction paper for roughly $2, and glued them together, then taped them. Bam, cheap $2 sketchbook with 500 different colored pages. Using colored pencil/white conte for them.

Still, my chicks look like dudes.

Hey man, glad to see you updating more regularly.
Line quality as I'm sure you know will come with time, especially as you said yourself pencil isn't your forte. Just keep at it, and try to focus more on the proportions and stuff as oppose to how clean your lines are, they will come as you get more comfortable and confident with your tool. Regarding your pencil studies, I'd say try to concentrate more on shadow shapes and value as oppose to trying to define everything with line, you'll get a far better understanding of the forms that way.
The digital studies are looking good but I'd suggest pushing them further or cleaning them up, or at least defining the edges a little more. More like what you did in the still life, again this will help you to understand the forms better when you try to draw them from your head.
Still life is as you said unfinished. I'd say start smaller, get a piece of fruit or a vegetable, but it on a white piece of paper and paint that. Spend a good few hours on it and really observe the colours your looking at, don't paint what you think they should be. If you're painting a banana and you see what looks like some green or blue or pink or whatever on there. Paint it!. Don't just paint it all yellow because you know that bananas are yellow.
Good to see you using that white pencil as well as the graphite one, but one is holding out on us man, I know you got more than that to show ;). Again it's looking good but look for shapes of value when you're rendering.

Hope that was helpful man
Peace
Dan

hey glover, nice studies keep on working. it's great that you have a goal for yourself (working for pixar) but try to make being a great artist just as much a priority as a job at a company. don't forget to be independent and be yourself. keep up the hard work bro! :D

Thanks for the tips.
Though I don't really understand what shadow shapes means.

Here's a 10minute study in my new Recycled Paper sketchbook, using 4h pencil, and Chinese White Pencil.
And a 20minute Self Portrait baring no likeness at all.

I find traditional studies from a photo, harder to sight measure, than from a live object. Especially if I'm sitting at a desk.

Thanks to Dan for the references.
If anyone else knows any more portrait sites, besides the obvious Google, I'd appreciate it.

@Ricky - Definitely. I want to be an overall fine artist, in all the fields I can get my hands on. I want to retire as a fine artist. Death by Canvalanche.(canvas)

A girl from imagination, about 1 hour in photoshop, tried even more at rendering, not really happy with the outcome.

Should of worked bigger, as the canvas was only 500x500.

Hey there danial, nice updates! I like how all the values are coming together, adn youre getting a nice touch to yer pencil works too! On the life drawings, I like how youve managed to get the mass and form of the muscles work, something i have still got to learn! Some more confident and harder lines along with all the awesomeness would incease the awesomeness of course! nothing else to crit now, keep on going!

Started a Mage-Knight type of guy. I'm getting really more confident in drawing figures, but feet still scare the shit out of me. Along with clothing.

I'm still working on the Knight, just trying to figure out armor right now.

Anyways here are some really badly done Figure studies.
As well as half-assed character designs with no face, and nothing detailed at all.

Still got a lot to go, but I'm enjoying myself painting what little I've learned through practice.

Just a few sketches from my mind, and 1 fansketch of Hellboy.

Gotta start doing some studies, need to understand the human body more than just a few shapes. I have no idea how to render the body.

Some drawings from my head.

I started reading the Bridgmans Drawing from Life book, and I can't understand any of his drawings at all. The text makes complete sense, but his drawings are complete scribbles in my head(gestures). So hopefully my gestural approach to drawing will get better reading the book.

Still trying to get used to photoshop. I'm a bit icky at rendering stuff in a short amount of time.

Gotta do a ton of figure studies, and some more imaginative work.

For now here are 3 10minute faces first two from ref.
