Here's a commissioned piece for a RPG bookcover i'm actually working at...
It's not totally finished. I think i'll rework some areas...
I take advantage of this forum asking for opinions...
i'm asking myself if the pink magic fields are a good choice

First it is the preleminary rough...

All digital, no time for oil or acrilic :(

First off, thanks so much for posting this! Frickin' awesome! About the pink magic lines... what about making them a really bright yellow? I don't think they look horrible but maybe another colour would look better. How long does it take you to do a piece like this?

I dig the pink, I think it contrasts nicely with the orange/brown bg. I think the actual rendering and placement of the light/energy is the kicker(though I sure as hell couldn't provide any worthy advice there)
What stood out to me was the toothy vortex. It appears like a cropped 3d image that has been duplicated & altered. It conflicts with the 2d. :) :)

Edit - I was looking at the first image. I see you've now 2d'd the 3d toothy vortex.

Such a high calibre artist/piece... I feel naughty just critiquing it.

i think it looks great! you can tell you used a shark and stampped them in ... i would fix it, it is kinda annoying and takes away royalties you know? all that hard work on everything else ..

edit: looking at it now it looks really good .. i wanna withdraw my first impulse, figured id keep it up there anyways to humiliate myself .. it looks swift. the pink area looks a little busy or something, i like the changes in the second rendition a lot they helped the peice.

Thank you all for your point of view. it's very useful and it makes me see my work with a fresh look
And yes, for the magic vortex, i used photographs of shark's tooth and stampped them. Maybe there is a little problem of homogeneity. i repaint them on some areas, add a lot of elements and use some filters. maybe i've to find another trick to keep the same type of rendering on the whole picture

I don't know why but I spend less time on this piece than habitually. Maybe less than 4 days...

But it's not finished. Still don't know about the pink... ( I'm not sure about yellow bright, afraid it'll be not harmonious )
Only 4 days before sending it to my publisher...and I've got other works to do at the same time...:(

I'll work again on it anyway; i hope it will be much better...

I'll post the result...

Thanks again !!!

Wow that is looking great! I wish I could get a chance do this type of Illustration. It looks like so much fun to get in there and really knock out some fantastic effects.

Anyway I did a quick paint over to inject some different colors. I think right now the palette looks pretty good all reds and warms. Basically I was just experimenting with possible contrasts. Take it or leave it. I had fun looking at you work as I did it.

Keep it up. I can’t wait to see the finished work.

Koryh: Even if the colors are nice I think that it is a threat to the overall mood. I'd really keep these warm tones if I were Aleksi because it keeps the whole scene in a sort of tension which actually fits.

this would make me pick up the book to check it out. a powerful interpretation of words, I'm sure.

If I were to say anything, I would say to up the contrast on the rock the shamaan is standing on, from the magic. It may take some tweaking, but it could really add to the power behind the action. The shark teeth are cool, but I would tweak a bit, less like a mouth, but full of danger requiring caution.

cool peice.
