YOU MAY WANT TO SCROLL DOWN QUICKLY FOR A BIT, MOST OF THESE ARE BORING STUDIES IM SURE YOU DONT CARE TO SEE

My first sketchbook, lets hope itll be a good one.

For now here are some crappy sketches of mine.
Im trying to focus on doing the Anatomy>Value>Color>Style process so expect to see some shitty shading/coloring if any.
Right now im having difficulty getting my scanner to work, so ill post a lot more a soon as its fixed.
All of these were referenced.

Good work so far, but may i suggest focusing on facial studies for a while, since that needs the most work. The figure looks good but for reference I would go buy some human anatomy books. Keep up the good work.

IceDearth,
Thank you, ill get right to it. As for the books, ill see what i can find, i have a large list of art books i havent looked for yet.

Finally an update!
I pretty much gave up on the anatomy>value>color>style thing, so now im trying to improve on my weakest area, color.
Heres a painting of an apple to get started.
Ive also done a bunch of anatomical studies, but ill post those later.
Thank you for any C&C.

Well it sure looks like you got colour covered in that apple!

If you are having problems with colour relations in non still life images, please post up some examples so that I have something more to go on.

Laxon: Thanks, i would post a non still-life painting, but theyre just too bad... Im thinking of walking away from photoshop in order to learn to paint, im going to do some old-master studies on traditional mediums and then adapt whatever skills i may gain, if any, to photoshop.

Anyway, here are those studies i promised.

Ok, i spent a little bit more time on this one and was somewhat pleased with it, although its still lacking a lot.
I also tried the old masters studies but it really didnt go too well...
Reff i used is here (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2219/2237172664_023d7488bb_o.jpg)
Thanks for any C&C.

Is it normal to say your sketchbook is "back" after only around 3 weeks?
Anyway, here are some more paintings.
Ive tried working using that, put color over black and white method (as you might see from the picture of corinne griffith, and my new thumbnail image for this thread), although i cant quite remember what its called.
I also attempted to do a landscape painting, this would be my first one so it pretty much sucks.

I think ive improved, so im pretty content with this post.
C&C is appreciated.
BTW, the painting of the girl was referenced from a b/w image, i added my own color.

thanks for helping out with my piece in the crit center, Good advice!

Nice start to your sketchbook, particularly the posemaniac studys and the colour study.

Thank you DeeStar, ill have to get back to those studies, im becoming more and more tired with doing them, theyre so boring compared to just drawing stuff for fun.

Heres another drawing ive done, i surprised myself with his one, and to be honest, i think i just got lucky with it (used reffs btw, i could never pull that off on my own).
I need to work more on the face, its becoming my greatest issue and a bad face can ruin a piece. I also need to work on more coloring, and folds in fabrics.

Wow, you're making good progress. Inspiring stuff! I would recommend studying a bit about warm and cool colours, and maybe try to push some dark accents in key areas. If you haven't already read Richard Schmid's book, Alla Prima, it's definately worth taking a look at.

Thank you Sycra, ill definitely check that book out.
Unfortunately i just now read your comment so i couldn't implement your advice on this most recent work.

This isn't anything great, in fact i hate some aspects of it, but i haven't updated in a while so im just looking to get some stuff up on here.

Ill learn how hands work eventually... Ill also try to use references more often.

So i did this piece for a bit of value practice. Eh, i got a bit lazy with his right eye.
So how is it? Should i have added darker darks for the shadows?
No reff btw.

Ill try updating more often.

Just thought id update this, i havent in a while.

I think my faces have been getting better, but that sortof came with a price. Due to me focusing mostly on faces, my bodies have deteriorated, or maybe i just realised how poor my understanding of the figure really is.

I attended national portfolio day over at VCU, they all said i should work on my backgrounds, or at least make the people "do" something, so expect to see more of that.

No reff btw, i should REALLY start using one.

Heres some more practice. Hopefully ill add some more finished pieces soon.

I've removed these due to their overly large size and lack of constructive contribution to my sketchbook.

M&M tin drawing.
Im trying to learn to render, and also draw backgrounds/everyday items, so maybe ill do some still-lifes later.

This is it for now, hopefully ill upload something tomorrow.

Ehh sorry its so small, i was zoomed in the entire time i was painting it and didnt realise.

I like the M&M tin study. Doing more of these sorts of things is definately gonna help you. With the study you did, a small crit would be to pay attention to the saturation of the shadows. I think if you bumped up the saturation in your image to something more like the ref it'll help a lot. And also, pay close attention to the size, shape, and placement of highlights. Keep on going!

Thank you Sycra, ill definitely try to improve the saturation and highlights. To be honest that was kind of the first time I did any practice with rendering metal, so unfortunately it came out pretty bad. Ill keep doing some sketches, maybe some black and white ones.

Anyway, heres a small update, just some more sketches. I should do more studies, but considering how rarely i draw, doing studies during that time seems dull.
For the current sketches i tried some of the techniques ive seen around here, that multiple limbs thing being one of them.

Oh and i busted my tablet pen, so itll be pencil/ink drawings until i replace it.

Images removes, same reason as other posts. I might upload these back up later.

Also, at the time of this edition (July 13, 2011), I've realized the massive error of not doing more studies for these past two years. I'll be working on this from now on. I suppose the only thing I've gained from this down-time is the proliferation of ideas. I have plenty of creative ammo to back me up once I level up.
