Spartan Camp #96 - 50 gestures + Optional Study of "Objects in Perspective"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 19th of July.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or naked. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional Study of "Objects in Perspective", in any media.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study: Perspective lines are recommended! You can go for a referenced image or construct something yourself. Topic is up to you. For example a figure, a building, or just a few blocks or shapes. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are also up to you!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
:muscle: Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!! :muscle:

I decided to set the posemaniacs thing up to 60 seconds. Did some Sunday (can post but that's before you made the thread) and yesterday.
Tried to pay more attention to head size. I think maybe I added heads rather lazily last time, having only 30 seconds they got down-prioritized. But it's not an excuse, I've been told before I drew head sizes wrong - though last time they were TOO BIG! oh well :D

I'll try and look into the perspective thing later on :) and more gestures, man it's easy when you just DO IT :o

Well done, Kris.
Back home earlier than expected and will join in on the fun. Hope to soon have something to post. Am among other things practicing drawing "spherical objects" at the moment so I guess they'll fit the "optional" nicely :-)

Centered mine on noses and mouths this time. Need to broaden my scopes on both. First were obviously more lengthy, and the last two pages are mostly quick gestures.
krisCrash, that Micheal pose is great! x ) Made me smile.

Beautiful studies.
Here are my drawings (and some studies of spherical objects for an online class on that subject). All animals were drawn from ref (an animal book I just got). The master study is from a drawing by Raphael. Everything's drawn with pencil (HB). Apologize for crappy digicam quality.
EDIT: Seems the free poses have been removed, some good, free material available on the site though:

Might add some gesture tomorrow, otherwise I say thanks for another valuable STC. :-)

I'm usually up all night with nothing to do. I do mine early just to give me something to kill the time.

A new thread will be there tomorrow. I will then add crits to this one too!
Didn't get my 50 done, but this week will be better.
Posemaniacs on a 45sec timer, some shirts from characterdesigns.com And some from a book.

oh right! Nicely spotted, I remember the reference as looking more like playing "air guitar" though :P
Maybe we should have Optional study: Dance moves! What do you say, Anthis?

First of all: Great to have you all in again! Things are a bit of a mess for me at the moment, but I'll try to be on schedule with posting new threads and crits.
krisCrash; They seem fine now! It's good to review your own work. I find posemaniacs often tricky. Sometimes it just feels like a fun and 'easy way' to do some relaxing studies. And I end up just copying poses without learning much. You seem to be on the right track though. And you're completely right: you just have to get started. Nice job on the optional study - not afraid! It's good to see you've implemented the anatomy you've learned in those creatures/character designs. Takes them to a whole new level.
DKHutcheson; Those are some really good noses and mouths. They seem from reference - if they are, do you have any particular source? Either way, outstanding. Those quick ones with the different areas outlined are interesting. Is that your workflow for the early stages?
Mindbendermind; Nice link. It's somewhat like timed posemaniacs. Unfortunately not that many poses. I like the raphael and the spherical objects a lot. I think they will improve your line quality greatly. Those are some pretty clean drawings, either you were really focused or determined. Surprised you did without perspective lines. Still like the animals though. Does that say 'belt animal'?
NicG; Hi there! Those are perfectly fine. Good variation too! Don't limit yourself to a certain drawing space (not sure if you do). Just checking, because I find that pressing drawings in tight spaces can affect the results ;). Also, not sure if you erased them, but I can see no construction lines. They can help you a lot, both for drawing from imagination and reference. You should try it out. Are you using any specific drawing/anatomy book? Because it is good to see you're backing up studies from reference with anatomy studies. Great workflow, keep it going!

Ha, I shamelessly just pull up the newest deviations page for portrait photography. x ) You can find a lot of good stuff (though admittedly you have to sort through some not so good stuff).
Sometimes that's how I start something. Though it's rare. I have a tendency to just jump into shading, which I need to grow out of.
How do you go about starting your gestures? : o They're always so clean and accurate looking. Mine turn into a mess of scribbles if I'm not careful. And if I am careful to keep it clean and quick, they always come out wrong.

I sometimes do that too. Does take some sorting out usually, but there really are some good images.
As for me I always do a 'warmup' first. Like some posemaniacs. Then I just pick a ref source or look for one and start drawing. Whether it's long poses, quick ones, clothed, nude or anything else differs. I try to be versatile and change approaches.
I find it hard to find a balance. Quick poses ment for proportions, flow, and form usually turn out messy. While with the longer poses, like value studies and in-depth anatomy studies, I often lose track of the general form and shapes. For me, I think it partly has to do with staying focused, I tend to lose my patience with these lately.
