Can someone tell me if production designers do concept art or if they come from a concept art background? Is a production designer the top art job in the movies -- one that concept artists aspire to? How does he/she differ from an art director? I'm confused, because I want to know if you need illustration to become a production designer or an art director?

thx

A Production Designer is an artist responsible for designing the overall visual appearance of a movie.

Having a BG in art is essential, knowing how colours effect the mood of the story is also super important. having a general knowledge of everything Art Dept is also important.

A good PD will know their skill set limit and pass on work to more specialised people if they know they can't do it ie:Concept Art, Set Design Etc.

Hope that helps
