View Full Version : Newborn - Birth of a Good Deed (Final)

edarttogo
July 12th, 2009, 01:22 AM
Title: Birth of a Small Good Deed

This painting is depicting the birth of “One Small Good Deed” surrounded by pure evil and it's power under overwhelming odds. Evil is represented by demon revolving around the bright light with wings “Good Deed” represented in what I believe is a universal symbol for good.

Think of it this way; the demons are regular people doing evil acts and the small bright light is one person doing a small but good deed.

This is a lot more easy to understand. I can get a better idea at what you are trying to convey with this lighting.

that's one of the most original ideas in this contest, i like the fact that the good deed has to go through so much hell before it can be realised (as in real life.) it makes much more sence with the colour added in,

gat my eye on this

I have adjusted the compositions flow/gesture and splattered some base color. I’m also working on some detail sketches that I will post later.

I love the pencils and composition.
Is it a sacrifice? Interesting to see how you create the transition.
A portal? Accidental apple? [I've got nothing].

This is a really interesting idea and I've visited this thread a lot. The pencil work is really lovely and your concept is well supported by the composition. Can't wait to see that 'good deed' object.

July 15th, 2009, 01:14 PM
Thanks guys… I am still working on the pencil stage, adding detail and tweaking the flow of the composition.

I need some help on what the good deed can be. Any ideas you all can share with me would be helpful.

I have this so far

-Tree/vines growing out of the light
-Bright green/blue light in the shape of wings with feathers floating towards the viewer

Will do some sketches of them soon just need to finish the pencil drawing pass.

I will have an update soon

awesome pencil work, about that good deed, i know it's been done several times but what about a dove. you could have a human hand coming out of the light, having just let-go of the dove. i think that would be very symbolic

That's looking pretty awesome dood.

I think for the color scheme, it depends how you wanna swing it. If you wanna make it seem more human and relatable, then go for a fleshy kinda color. The green and blue skins seem a lot more alien to me.

Update,

What do you all think of the symbolic representation of a good deed?

I am starting the vine idea just to see if that works better.

Will continue to work on color and light

dwardo- thank you for you comments,

-No its not a sacrifice… all the demons are their to show the overwhelming evil and how they can be neutralized my one small but powerful good deed.

-The apple is an accident but it gives me an idea on using the negative space to add a secondary image.

Hueyyeng – thank you. I appreciate you pointing out the idea behind the image; it’s where I spent most of my time. I wanted it to be fresh and different.

Davidherd – after I formulated my idea the first thing I did was work out the composition I’m glad you like it.

Miycko – thank you, you have been helpful

-I tried to work out your dove suggestion but I failed to make it without destroying the composition regarding scale.

-As for the colors – it will have some green but I’m going with mostly blue, with and accent of reds to neutralize the blues so the flesh on the demons look decomposed.

Phill99 – I can’t wait ether, I like what I have so far but with only a few hours a day it going slow.

Kuren – I am going in your direction by combining the blues and the reds, thanks

Wakoes – I am glad you are exited about this piece as I am, and to have you learn something from it is a bones to me... the next update is for you.

Artofinca – thank you

Wowy, definately one of the high scores around here so far.
Keep the good work up.

How did you work ? Is it a big pencil drawing scanned as basic and the worked digital on it ?

Crits ? I like the more greyish touch in the previews version, it gives a really odd, uncomfortable and dead fealing. Mabe just reduce the red spots in the actual version a little.

yo ed, just wondering if you'd consider this symbol I was thinking about "good deed". This may sound cheezy and over used, but my idea of good deed is a child or children, not a newborn baby, but a child who's already capable of thinking that's why they're asking a lot of things about everything around them.
Children speak with their hearts, and they say exactly how they feel and what they think. They don't care about war, nor corruption, hate, racial discrimination, and they consider everyone equal in their playground, and all they care about is play. There's even one song in our language that says: "children holds the time, and thru them, you'll find the answers in life" (or something like that). in our country children are symbol of joy and hope, People tends to forget conflicts when they're around....
It's just that I have no idea how you could effectively portray that in your composition.
Just my two cents though.
Thanks a bunch for sharing your art. I'm learning a lot, and hope I can dig deeper and learn more, for I personally like your technique. We somehow got the same idea for an entry piece, but on a whole different context though.
Best of luck mate! we are watching ! :P

love it! Looks very cool! Love all the demons.

Tho to be honest, looking at the picture i think of something like some angel came to fight the demons, or some demon gate portal opened, something like that.
I fail to see the connection with the title.
It is a great image and i hope you can push it so the story part works, would be a waste if the image would solely depend on the visuals.
cheers and good luck!

This is an awesome piece! Excellent pencil work and the latest colour update rocks!!
I have to agree with Randis however, that so far there is no obvious connection between title and image.
I will wait and see how you develop it though.

lincoln.renall
July 22nd, 2009, 10:04 PM
i agree with bhrandon - nice piece - but i think the new vine you added is a little overkill - and distracts from your otherwise good composition - just my 2 cents :-)
good work otherwise though

Superb work, looking forward to seeing final piece.

edarttogo
July 23rd, 2009, 03:52 PM
Vaejoun – your review is much appreciated... thank you

- With this piece my workflow is like you laid it out; pencil - scanned – digitally painted.
- I like to push the colors as much as possible then push back with it’s neutralizing counter part so not to lose it’s vibrancy yet keeping it appearing grayish. So yes, it will be less saturated.

Bworx – I have considered a narrative image in the lighted area but I dismissed it for two reasons

1. I have too many figures in the scene already
2. I what the image in the middle to be a universal symbol for any good deed

Thank you for your idea, it a good one if I wanted to focuses on a specific type of good deed.

Rizo – thanks man… H.R. Giger and Carlos Huante! I can only wish, but I’m trying.

Randis – thank you for you kind words and taking the time to giving me feedback

- I’m trying to make the connection to the theme as obvious as possible without eliminating the symbolism of the image. The demons are regular people doing evil deeds and the small bright light is one person doing a good deed that can be any deed.

Zimfin – I am glad you like my piece, hope you like my upcoming update with its new color tweaks

- like I mention to Randis I’m trying to make the connection to the theme as obvious as possible without eliminating the symbolism of the image. My intention is to let the viewer come up with there interpretation of the two forces colliding.

Bhrandon – thanks for the vow of confidence

I don’t like the vine ether, so I’m looking at other options

Lincoln.renall – vine are out… thank you for your feedback it helped me make my decision.

Kimliatach – I’m looking forward to finishing it. Thanks for posting

The vine kind of spoils it a bit, it's not needed, as the simplicity of the light is enough to explain the idea. Well done by the way!

I really like what you've done. You've expressed an idea without it being excessively literal. You've composed it so you have a nice first read. And you have subtlety in the areas of low contrast to continue to draw viewers in. In addition, it seems clear that you've designed for the placement of text and the magazine logo. It already looks like the cover of a magazine or a game package. Excellent work.

Beelow – glad you like it

It’s not a good sign that you don’t see the meaning, I hoping the judges will see the symbolism. I didn’t want to make it a literal interpretation.

The imagery was selected for these reasons

1. Visual appeal
2. Its universal symbolism of good and evil
3. Gave the right opportunity to use the light and color contrast needed to create the theme.

MeBabyMe – You should never think like that. As long as you do your best, you will always have a chance. Good luck!

Ktkps – thank you!

Randis – you have a deal …will do

Nironeru – If you have ever witness a crime that no one seams to do anything about, just looking on... sometimes encourages the act, that looks and feels like hell on earth. That is the moment I was trying to illustrate.

Eaglecaste – Thank you, I appreciate you liking my idea… I picked a subject that is meaningful to me. To have anyone’s vote over so many amazing submissions is an honor thank again.

Sheff – You pretty much summed up all of my early planning. I’m glad you see my efforts in the final piece… thank you for you kind review.

AhChu – I’m glad you are impresses! thank you for you comments

Rizo - comparing me with Gustavo and other artist like him is to much, but thank you… your too kind.

Oni Rem – thank you, I appreciate it.
