TEEN CHALLENGE 68
Idea by K. Forthun, changed a bit by Dave_.
The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
The Topic:
This could be an environment challenge... Or it could be that demon deep inside the mine you always wanted to draw! Or an action shot of the mine being flooded revealing a new passageway? :o Who knows, the mine which is flooded, is full of secrets! Which of the secrets do you want to discover?
Maybe the Egyptians had a secret tomb under the mine.. Or... simple express your idea right away!
(Any media is allowed) :)
IMPORTANT
1. Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
2. Please do not use attachment manager, but outside host your image.
3. Mark your final as final
The Deadline:
Sunday 26th of July, 2 weeks.

here's my thoughts
- adventurers flood the mine to reveal a magic gate only visible underwater
- lone miner in the mine with some subtle hints revealed by his lantern of faces in the walls etc.
- my younger brother's response; the mine is home to the mad cat woman...with a flaming sword!
I thought my ideas were cool, but my bros is just so vivid
your thoughts?

the creation thus far... i was in a mood for an environmental design... and cthulhu-esque tentaculations!
oh, and warn me before i screw up again... is this one not obvious enough? or should i add a giant sign onto the front screaming 'MINE'
Platinguard
July 16th, 2009, 02:49 PM
Haha it seems fairly obvious. What hasnt seemed obvious before. i have got all the designs i have seen that you have made so far. Ya know after looking at your now though Jerik...I need a new design lol.

A couple of miners discover a big secret in the depth of the mine. It's supposed to be the devil, and well, it's not too original. Anyway, this is the current state of the wip.

July 17th, 2009, 10:44 AM
Does the mine have to be completely flooded, or could I have a character/creature shin deep in water in a tunnel?
P
July 17th, 2009, 01:10 PM
Touchstone, look at other entries, nobody does it completely flooded, I think you can do it this way too. :)
Mtijn
July 17th, 2009, 05:11 PM
You don't need to fill it completely, as long as the walway a bit underwater. Lets say that if you walk through the tunnel the water gets to your knees, take that as the minimum requiredment ^^
Ofcourse it's also allowed to make a scene where the water drips through the ceiling or anything like that.

Oooo, I always feel hypocritical (reeeeaaaally hypocritical) when critting on people doing ___of the weeks if I haven't done it myself, but I have the urge to do so right now. In no particular order, and I apologize for being harsh..... as always feel free to ignore me.
First, I would say that zelda geek and jerik are the ones who have best gone with the subject ie, says mine + flooded. Most got the mysterious no problem.
John Isaacson: This could be a flooded castle for all I can tell right now. Also, having the goblin flipping the viewer the bird isn't going to make them look much kindlier upon the piece. To an enemy it might be amusing, but to the people you're trying to sell it to, not particularly. In terms of your lighting, it should apply to all of the piece: this includes the treasure chests, and perhaps the goblin might have a shadow on the water? Hey, and about the votes, it doesn't matter all that much. I haven't kept track of how many I've entered, but believe me, I've never won a single one, and haven't gotten more than a couple of votes ever. If really want, you can check my sb and gauge for yourself how "good" I am if it helps. That's not the point really (the winning). It sounds lame, but it really is for the experience, practice and advice people give you.
PieMonster: I'm not sure if you're still going ahead with this, but there's not too much to crit at this point.
OmertA: Again, this could be the "Fairy Cavern of Glowing 'Shrooms. Again, a bit too early to crit too much.
Ronald Lui: Same as before -> Alien outpost underwater? It's pretty, but not too too mysterious. I think the lack of action or strangeness is adding to this.
pijus: Pretty. It took me a while to realize that the mine was under the skull. Currently the largest building is the centre of attention, and could be a generic Asian building. I think I would crop a bunch of space out of the left and basically tighten in on the buildings in the image. Maybe brighten the glow too?
Jerik: I like how you've rendered all of the materials quite differently. In terms of composition, I might add some rocks to the left, as currently the line the top of the hill is making is leading the eye out of the image a bit. Also, I believe I've seen you use the b&w + green in the past (I may be wrong), which works well, but have you tried other colours? Red maybe? And maybe having a bit more cast light from the coloured areas. It looks cool.
zelda geek: I like the colour combo you have going on in this one. Also, mixing too many Ps tricks together tends to make things get a tad unbelievable: in this case overlays and smudge I believe. Another thing that bothers me, is that the monster blends in too much with the back of the cave. This is making me question where the light is that is lighting this area up? Hmmm.... I'm trying to thing how you could darken the bg and still have lizard boy show up.....let me brainstorm overnight and see if I come up with anything.
pokepetter: I like the idea. My only problem in terms of the subject, it that when one traditionally thinks of mines, they are generally at most double a man's height. Veins of ore are not as large as the cavern shown. Perhaps if there were mining equipment of some sort sitting around (large ones) it would be more apparent. The things in either bottom corner are also a bit distracting, especially as they are just a little too vague as to make out what they are. I like the mood.
Novel done. :P

i used b&w+green.... again because ...well... its tentacles... and green is a good slime colour...
as i said i'm unlikely to edit this piece.. :/ am srta in exams right now Dx
but thanks for the advise anyway :3
also one thing: Pijus: it looks totally epic... but ...
i see the mine... but i missed the secret... it's a fairly daunting mine... but no secret of obviousness (unless its the 'thing' thats nearest (exitting) the mouth of the skull)... i like your flood though!

Jerik, I thought the red glow from my mine entrance and the skull over it would be prety mysterious and would show that there is some kind of secret in there, guess I needed to show more. Thanks for telling me this :) I guess I marked it FINAL to early hehe. Dont know if Ill try to change it...

Yaaaa!!!! Crit each other!!!!!! It keeps the bossy urge to tell everyone what I think they need to do from overwhelming me and causing my dark side to come out. (The Pixie of Overbearingness and Deathishness....maybe I just need my head checked: either way. :P)
John Issacson: Yaaa!!!!! Good for you.

a part of me assumed that... but at a point like that... it has the subtlety of a sledgehammer...
i'm not saying that i did it better... but my mine's secret has JUST been revealed... but yours has been sitting there being a giant skull with red light and it just flooded only.... or it's always been flooded... did noone notice it?...

xD Same here, Platinguard... Mine's technically unfinished and has loads of errors that I've noticed so far (anatomy errors and a weird-looking pose, changes in the composition I should've fixed up... should've painted those letters, etc.), and it doesn't seem to be much of a mine... and I decided to do a somewhat different take on the whole secret thing- the secret being that everyone thinks there's a secret but there's not one there. Or anymore, anyway. But enough of my rambling, here it is:
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg284/twistedupside_/tc68.jpg
So I'm at least answering the question, I figure the secret might've been a precious gem or something, and someone got there first... or they're embarrassing baby pictures of above female character her parents took and they decided to move them to a more secure location before she could destroy them ;D.

Thank you. :)
My original idea was to have some sort of wall with screaming skulls (not moving, like statues) coming out of it and ghosts/ghost hands stroking the diver behind him so he can't see them. But I came to a conclusion that a creepy kid/small guy sitting on something is creepier than some lame ghosts. :)

Blah heres my final not to happy with it. My brush economy sucks :dead:
Heres my story i made up while working on my peice.
The suns rays beared down on earth as global warming took root, melting the ice caps of the world. Water began to encompass parts of the globe. As scientists were seaching underground for a new energy source. Mines were shafted down deep into the earths crust. Scientists were able to find a new mineral but found no use for energy from it. The mines were abandoned due to the rising tides of the ocean. Mushroom spores were washed deep into the mine and from the exotic minerals they began to evolve the mushrooms. Masive glowing luminescent mushrooms apeared from the depths having enough energy to grow plants. Thus creating a new eco system deep underground. No one would find these ecosystems until many years later as the water levels receeded. The ecosystems were able to keep evolving even evolving into new life forms. Many more secrets still hide within these mysterious mines.

Hi,
this is my first contest entry... There are a lot of things I would have done differently, but I think I learned a lot about composition and working with various images/objects from this experiment.
description:
I was really aiming for something simple, though I realized I had to incorporate more elements of a mine shaft into my image so I added the lopsided mine cart and railway tracks. But the premise- supernatural hosts occasionally inhabit this derelict structure, long abandoned by man.

That's really beautiful imadolphin.
I was planning on entering this contest myself, but it looks like I'm gonna miss the deadline.
Don't know how this contest works, but I'd vote for you.
Love the color most of all.
Keep it up, can't wait to see more of your stuff.

first the mindless and rather thoughtful (i hope) compliments
imadolphin: you have my vote... wonderfully executed... i love it!
Omerta: i like the original style coming through as opposed to the strict (as close to realism as possible) gist, though it'd look nice if you added a bit more dynamic light ...
Arbinn: i like... the idea of TOTALLY FLOODED THEREFORE NEED BETTER GEAR is something which noone else tried... i think it's totally groovy.
and then...
Fish&L ... it's confusing... the stand alone image is that is... not the concept
John Isaacson: well... it's all got a whole lotta potential... but then the surface of "HELL ... etc" is flat and ruins the effect... a bit more texture would be great...
Gominoid: uhm... you, alike to many, look like you're afraid of darker shading for the image's figures...the hands would look awesome if they where alittle more defined by shadow instead of safely a similar colour all around... i like to cheat with this often and abuse black and white... but it taught me a the value of shade to black as opposed to shade to slightly darker than before
and auncer: "mainly"?.... riiiiight
