View Full Version : DSG 313: Creature: Intelligent plant life

dsg bot
January 5th, 2004, 03:00 AM
Today's topic is: Creature: Intelligent plant life

[edit: davi]
If your confused about the topics... mtom posted a topic 2 hours before normal, since he was going to sleep and wasn't sure the dsgbot would work. It was the right thing to do, but it caused confusion when the bot actually worked again.

so this IS the current topic, the other one is still worth viewing though. I've locked the other thread, so if you did do a post for it, just post it here and let us know that it was for the early thread.

Nice work Hunger_Artist! It's a unique idea and well rendered.

I took a silly angle with mine ;). Painter, 35 mins.

Intelligent plant life seeks same - Ernest is a mid-season Venus fly trap seeking a partner to share flies and fun! He enjoys poetry, gourmet bugs and swaying in the breeze. To meet Ernest today call 133-825-PLANT.

Another quickie today, color slapped on a pen sketch in open canvas.

Trying a new technique today. I know this looks weird - I was taking a nap and I suddenly got this image in my head. I've been completely outdone yet again... good work, all. Something about Kartoffel's made me laugh out loud.

http://www.atomicagedog.com/art/dailysketch/strangeplants.jpg

I plan to flesh this one out over the next couple of days.

Guidance: if you could change ONE thing...?

[EDIT] I just replaced the original picture with an updated image. Is this against the rules? If so let me know.

these are neat.. I like this topic.

this is a slightly different idea.. the creature in the plant feeds off scraps left over in the mouth.

Love this topic!!! Instantly reminded me of a sci fi book i read a long long time ago... Basically, mankind is overrun by cornstalk like plants with stinging whips... Its a bit more complicated than that, but i tried to draw my depiction of the scene.. Love the ideas today!!!

I messed up my spelling... Went back and looked it up! its Triffid... Day of the Triffids. Awesome work everyone!

Drats... I had a look at the topic this morning and wasn't inspired enough, and now I come back to see what others have done and find a damn cool topic in it's place! Ahh well... no time now. I need my sleep. :(

Uber sweet stuff all round so far. A real turnout (or should that be turn-ip?) today.

Hunger_Artist - Gorgeous first piece, but I like the second one best... more "bite" to it. what happened to your usual style?

Miau - Love the texture on the leaves. Nice colours.

Harmony Steel - Mutant Chocobo? I like the use of a leaf for the arm.

Kartoffel - Nice reading glasses.

Wundergeek - Haha... I knew someone had to do it! :p

silentbrain - I wouldn't have got it if you hadn't explained. I would love to see a closeup of a guy with dandylion hair. :D

Anto - Strike two for LSoH. :)

Beatnik - I'm thinking Wilbur Whateley there. Nice face.

wayfarer - Reading a book or ringing for a pizza?

dfacto - Took me a while to catch on to the potato thing.

Defunct - Ahh... brains and vines. A good combination. Nice colours too.

rick_hershey - Love the sinew (sp?) look.

Railboy - help me out here. Giant striding mushrooms with mushroom clouds?

phantom_head - More brains. I like the inverted (?) one best.

funshark - A flower giving another flower a third flower becouse of love?

Schwoassamoasda - Cool idea. Very intellectual.

dns2k - interesting composition. I'd like to see a version with more colour depth.

Spartycus - If it wasn't LSoH's, I knew it would be DotT's! :p

juicy_fruit - Nice. Not sure about the pink though.

Davi - Gorgeous as usual. Your charaters always have a real look of mass to them. Now tell me where the damn rake effect is in Painter! :D

January 5th, 2004, 06:49 PM
I didn't think I was going to have any ideas for todays topic, but I was getting nowhere with my painting today so I gave up and started sketching. I had about half a page of thumbs before I got this idea.

http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/dsg-313.jpg
As usual the WPE is probably better then the picture, I was tempted to just settle for my sketch today except that I am addicted to color now.
-->WPE<--(664Kb) (http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/dsg-313.wpe)

Railboy: I think yours looks more like a pair of inteligent water spouts (djinn maybe?) I would try to add some ques to show they are plants(color, leaves, vines etc.). The BG is really nice btw.

Alot of inspirational stuff today! I don't know where you people get your ideas...

i didn't even touch the rake tool, it's the acrylics-captured bristle brush.

you really need to fool around with the brushes too your liking, finding out what i or other painter users perfer won't help you find your style.

Okay, these pictures are absolutely TERRIBLE quality. For some reason my digital camera can't deal with the mechanical pencil, it's too shiny. The best I could get was without the flash. and it looks severely smeary and dull. Very disappointing indeed. So I've also included an equally smeary line drawing to show the shape better.
