Hey guys!
My name is Sebastian. I'm 19 and from Germany. I'm new to this digital stuff, but I also figured that CA is a great community of wonderful artists.
I've been drooling a lot over the pages of this site until I decided to join aswell. :teeth:
The truth is, that every university I applied to rejected me and instead of jumping off the bridge or running a knife into my chest I try to stick to drawing and painting and open this sketchbook here. Unfortunately the profs didn't tell anyone why they were rejected and I didn't even know why I'd faild the test, because they liked my portofolio...
Long story short: PLEASE COMMENT and GIVE ME ADVICE! :bashful:
Here are some studies of Hogarth and Gordon for anatomy practice
715726
715727
715728
715729
715730
715732
715733
715734
715735
I did this girl in the left corner and figured that I needed practice in hatching a face so a took some Silvestri comics and filled the double-page spread with some studies (he is the god of hatching :D)
715736
715737
some crap from head
715738

715742
715743
This is one of my first own pieces (two refs for the elephat used).
The lighting is completly off and I figured I totally forgot the shadow... xD

Gogogogogo!!! Use your time, study the hell out of everything. Do it all: photos, value studies, colors, from life, still lifes, gestures, drawing, anatomy, perspective, composition... bla bla bla
Oh, and have you read this? http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913
I'm subscribing in anticipation! :D

nice work. You have great skill at rendering, but your faces seem to have a sameness about them.
Maybe try working more expressiveness into them.

spoonfruit - thanks :)
tetro - thanks for subscribing and for your help with the prieview-pic :D I hope you survived the test today. ;)
chang - Thanks for the crit! =) I try to work on my expressions tomorrow. I have a great ref-book with many expressions that I should try to burn in my brain.
killart - thank you so much!!! :D Yeah I really should make some figure drawings. I'm still looking for a course nearby. Thanks man, for stopping by.
frank gressie - Wow, I'm honored thanks. :D
I think I should note somewhere that I have a tablet since Febuary 7th and I know that I still have a lot to learn. But does someone has a useful link how I can get used to painter?? Because I love the painterly feel I see everywhere, but I don't know how to use it... :(
I also got the testversion of SAI which a friend said would be similar to painter but easier to handle, but it ran out. And unfortunately I wasn't able to order it. (is it only for the US??)
So, here are some pencils I did in the last 24 h... (sorry the photos are really crappy, but my sketchbook is too large for my scanner :\)
a few hogarth studies
716643
716646
once again I stalked my sister while she was reading on the terrace
(the one at the bottom doesn't really look like her)
716639
and I also deformed my mother's face while she was watching tv
the left one is horrible! aahhhh!!!
716647
two older dell'otto studies
I love his figures and his use of colors. Everything he does looks epic.
I hope to absorb all of it! :D
716649 716652
and finally a stilllife
This time I used a black shiney fabric. I was way faster than in the other two previous ones.
716653
I hope to do some landscapes and full character design, too. Well, soon.
I'm really tired now. I think I'm doodling myself to sleep.

I'd say that there is some really useful information in the tutorial forums concerning photoshop, painter, and a lot of other formats for digital works. Also, if you go into some of the forums such as EOW and CHOW and COW, a couple of them have stickie threads concerning the WIP process that some of the artists went through when coming up with their pieces, and I have learned a great deal from those... and wasted hours staring jealously, lol. =)
great sketchbook so far, I'm going to have to mark it so I can give it the time that it deserves (aka so that I can look through it when I'm not at work like I am now ;) )

Wow...fantastic start. The image of your mother on the right is beautiful. Re: software, I use GIMP and I love it...it's free (though it does take some getting used to). In the last still life, your strokes are looking more confident and less choppy that in the previous two...perhaps use a touch less of the texture brush, though, and see how far you can push things with a hard brush. Great work! Really looking forward to future updates.

AmbientSounds - thanks for the hints man. :) also thank you for taking your time and looking at my humble stuff.
courtyard - aww... thank youuu! yeah, that was a texture overkill but I was at full throttle and couldn't stop. :D It was the frist time for me using a texture brush. ^^ And I just downloaded GIMP and will try that one tomorrow. Thanks again! :D
First of all I'm really sorry but I didn't get anything done today (no pencils at all). D:
But there was a good reason, because I won an award today. :D
I totally forgot, that I entered the contest. Our art teacher made the Scharfenberger contest our last project at upper school. The topic was "Räume" (rooms).
And this is what I came up with. Well, this was my first digital painting. We could choose every media and I want to try something digital, because my good grades were safe. I wanted to risk it and try something new. My tablet arrived one week before the deadline and I had technical difficulties and other work to do for school. So I did make it, but wasn't really satisfied. Well, you will sure see why... O:
I never thought of winning this contest. And with the first price!? I even earned 150 € and was interviewed from the local newspaper. This is so unreal. :D
Today was such a great day and I'm not suicidal anymore. :'D
So here comes the "wonderpiece":
717715
The picture how it should've looked sticks still in my head and maybe one day I can paint it that way. Just study study study.... (at least the technical difficulties disappeared ;) )
Here a photostudy... I wanted to practice gold (to paint later golden armors and stuff).
717722
And a stilllife from this early morning.
It's a brass ballerina from my gran. The red table was really annoying. ^^
717723
I hope tomorrow I get more done... :/

Wow, nice beginning ! You're pencil stuff is really good ! On the first studies, the arms are looking a bit tiny compared to the rest of the body ! Also on your digital painting, the proportions and colors are wonderful, but the only thing is edges ! Your hard edges are good, but your soft edges aren't soft enough ( but it's better on the last digital painting, with the green drapery ) ! Take care

Yup yup, survived my first two exams :D War sogar unter den besten in der Physioklausur \:D/
Congratulations on winning! But don't start slacking, I'm gonna check in here regularly and kick your butt, if you don't update. I want to see new stuff daily!!! >:] Muahah!!!
Oh, and some of the anatomy drawings seem a little bit too wide to me, but maybe thats just me... Do something non metallic, not shiney for your next still life maybe, to study different materials.
Wheee, and I got my RAM expanded today. I'm off to Photoshop... :D Gogogo!!!

Walid D - Thanks! :) Yeah, I got some serious anatomy problems... but that's why I'm doing this.^^ And I try to get better at edges too, thanks.
Snobby - Thanks!
Tetro - Wow, that's so coool!! Ahhh, I know, I need to do MOAR!!! O: You are right with the anatomy problems... I don't know what I do but somehow I fail on the size of the chest every time!!! D:
SO here we go!
I've got my driver's license yesterday!!! :D (Yeah, I know it's late with 19 ^^)
I'm driving around a lot now ;) but I know I have to do studies to improve! D:
And I had an internship interview today which went pretty well. They really liked my stuff. On monday they call me if I made it! :/
I didn't get anything done these days... D: I hope it gets better tomorrow!
Beware. Very bad photos it provokes eye cancer! (They are really horrible, maybe I re-upload them...)
Here some quick expression studies. D:
720443
720444
Two portraits of my father. Ahhh, he almost looks like him. I need to focus...
720440
I just found posemaniacs and this site is just great. Now I realize even more my faults... D: But great site to practice different angles. :)
720445
720447
Here's some older stuff. D: I'd borrowed the bust my uncle did for his journeywork for practice. I wouldn't do it like this again, I guess...
720451 720450
And here's a quick ballerina again in daylight. ^^
720452
I will do more in the future. *blushes*
And I tried GIMP, but I need some time to get into it because I have all the short cuts in PS and they don't work in GIMP. D:

sweet, looking good, esp those still lifes. Great dedication, practise shows of. Keep up the studies, you'll probably get accepted for that school next time. Here in Swedenthey usually want people who are a little bit older, say 20-21 and up. So you'll have a lot of time this year and next, you'll suprise them wigh your developement.
I'm looking forward to see it. :)

Volth - Thanks! :D Mhmmm... I heard that age-thing too from killart. He told me that someone who was really good was rejected because he was too young... But I don't get it!? Yeah, the good thing is that I could improve until next time, hopefully!! :D
skorpi - Thank you, I'll try! ;)
I've listened to Massive Attack the whole day and I just love it!!!
Not much of an update... but still... I did also other stuff but nothing worth sharing...
And here we go:
Some figures from posemaniacs.
I think I'm getting even worse! (Is that even possible???) D:
721217
721220
Inspired by Mr. Pascenko I tried to improve my lines! :D
But I don't think I can handle this style... D:
Here are some quick hands and feet from life.
721222
721225
721227
721229
I did so much obeservation stuff that I wanted to do some quick color crap from head.
And I succeeded, it really is crap...

Update!
Yesterday I was the whole day with my relatives eating Flammkuchen so I didn't have time for updating. :(
Today I got a call from that advertising agency that I applied to and they want me to start on monday! :D So good news!!
Here some Gordon studies...
723130
723131
And now the horror: some figures from head!!! D:
I have nothing learned I guess... well at least I know that I should do these more often... every day maybe? ^^
723132
723133
I wanted to do a stilllife today and failed...
The sun vanished and I had to stop because I didn't see anything.
But it was so much fun. I would've loved finishing the spoon and the drapery...
723134
and here a older Bouguereau study I won't finish...
I love the green skintones in his original masterpiece.
723140
Compared to all the others I should really hurry becoming better. Ahhhhh! D:

July 13th, 2009, 05:38 PM
So many studies in just 8 days. :wtf: Really impressive observation skills! But I think you need some work on the imaginative stuff. :P
The arm muscles here are strange.
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/6825/41451130.jpg
I think studying anatomy/composition could better your observational ability. For example, in your figure sketches, suggesting the structure/gesture instead of rendering every concavity would help you understand the body more. Or in the Bouguereau copy, suggesting the light using broad shapes could save you time while still learning about value composition.

July 13th, 2009, 06:13 PM
You are improving however slowly but I can see some progress. I have an idea for what might help you with your anatomy studies and that would be to get a book on human anatomy, I got one and it helps ALOT! Keep up the good work.

July 15th, 2009, 05:03 PM
YihyoungLi - Thanks! I know I have quite some work. :) That Bouguereau started exactly that way, but I wanted to render it, because I need practice in blending and such too. But you're right sometimes leaving it unfinished is timesaving. ^^ And thanks for the critic I would've find even more things to circle. xD
Icedearth15876 - Actually I've got six (or even more?) of them lying here everywhere and I do anatomy studies almost every day. And thanks! :)
So yesterday I didn't draw or paint at all. In the morning I drove to Karlsruhe to get my portofolio back. And in the noon my aunt called me that a bough of her huge willow in the garden crashed into the neighbors garden because of the heavy storm the other day. So there was quite some clean up to do. It rained and was really muddy so I was dirty from head to toe! xD
Today I stood up at midday (because I was really done) and I got right into drawing again. ^^
I drew my sister again
725058
725061
and some 10-min sketches of her. (It's pretty rare that someone takes time sits still for me so I'm always happy about it. ^^)
725063
The good thing is when I was at my aunts I borrowed a lot of her beautiful cloth and tablecloth. Because I really need to get into drapery.
725066
725068
And at last a study inspired by David Rapoza. (His work is sooo stunning... *o*)
725071
No figures today! D:

July 16th, 2009, 08:39 AM
nice studies, I'd suggest to learn the body anatomy geometry-wise (what shapes does it consist of and how do they interact) to learn what to emphacize and what to recede in your drawing.
now your lines lack some variativity, they could be bolder in the dark and nearly dissolve in light areas .. Also you could bring out your center of interest by using a very broad brush on the most of the piece and adding some sharper strokes to your interest point
hope that helps :D feel free to PM me to ask something

kischi - Thanks. I'll try! ;)
griffinfly - Thanks for your advice. That is really helpful. I have to try it. Maybe Bridgman studies or own stuff... and yes, I'm struggling with the contrast issue for a long time. It's just that everything gets smeared. I think I have to move to Ink stuff for that... hmmm... I'll definitly ask if I have a problem, thank you! :)
DeKal - Thank you for stopping by! Haha, I hope so!! :D
jackpot_anjr90 - Thanks! Me neither! ;P
Jesus Food - :D
NoodleDoodle - Thank you! :)
I'm not in the drawing-painting mood lately. But now would be the time to draw, because on monday my internship is going to start... D:
Even less time! O_o
Seriously how do you guys update daily?? xD
After two days doing anything, here I am showing you stuff from today...
I wanted to get into rendering again (because I'm pretty slow at that) and ended up doodling faces from head and the stuff around me.
727272
Here I tried to describe the form of the face with lines. (I read about it, that it is very good for the brain.) So these aren't shadow areas.
I'm not really satisfied with the result but it was easier for me to draw heads from head this way than with a pencil...
(I wanted to show my sister that I also can draw ugly woman. xD)
727273
A pear from life. (texture brush overkill xD)
727275
and a photo reffed penguin. (1h)
727278
Now I have to get ready for a birthday party and tomorrow is my brother's birthday, so I don't know when I'm going to update again... D:

Those digi's are really nice, I love how you are able to soften the skin in those photo studies in your first post.
Cool :).

Mystik - Thanks! I think you're the only one who actually likes it! ^^
dU5K - Thanks you. Yeah, I know, my line-work could be better... :/
Amontill - Cool, I don't see much of a progress yet, but we'll see. If I continue being that lazy I can dig my own grave. D:
Noukah - It's one of my faves of him, too. :) Thanks, I'll try.
hala - Thaaanks! :D Stuff from imagination? Than this update will please you! ^^
Lyno - Thank you. Soften skin isn't hard, it really isn't. Just use the soft airbrush brush. (xD) I might use it too often. D:
Tetro - Where is your ass-kicking power??? D:
Wow, it's been a while.
I didn't die or something. ^^
I started my internship and it's quite an experience. I'm doing alot of vector stuff and sitting 8 hours infront of an computer so that I'm really tired and not really inspired to do stuff in the evening... D:
But here is some of the stuff I did on the weekends.
My lighting still sucks, so I did some greyscale studies. I didn't do those for a long time.
744589
744591
I love the fotoseries "SOUL" by Thierry le Gouès.
And it was very easy doing some quick studies of it. I think I learned quite a bit about lighting and form. I might do some more! :D (10-30 mins)
744592
744593
And rest is from imagination.
An older piece. Don't really like it, but I wanted to know what I've learned about atmosphere and painting a gold armor from head.
The contrasts on the armor are bad. Well, at least I see all my faults. ^^
744594
This was a gift for a friend. I kinda like that one and how the print turned out. :D
744595
Here a sci-fi portrait. Everyone says that it just looks like me. D: But it was really from my imagination. Well, you couldn't tell, because I didn't upload a self-portrait yet. :P I doodled 3 portraits but I decided to just frame that one. God, I love science-fiction. Thinking about to do more of this genre.
744596
I didn't do a lot of pencil stuff. No, not really. I did quite some 30 sec posemaniacs to get a feeling for the human body, but it really isn't worth sharing. ^^
Thanks for watching. I hope to update soon!
But for now, I have to sleep because I'm sick for the last 3 days, but it's getting better.
Not soo sick that I can't go to the advertising agency every day, but still pretty destroyed. ^^´
I have to do way more for being able to do cool illustrations and concepts.
LIVE YOUR DREAM! :D

Gaaaah, I'm sorry, I'm really busy atm too, two weeks of work left before my vacation... wanted to kick your ass a while back, when you didn't update, but I figured you're all busy with your internship. ;) How is it? Do you learn useful stuff? Composition and colors, I guess...
Good to see, that you're using your weekends... I like your bounce-lighting. Some of these seem rather pixelated to me. What size/resolution are you working on? Do you use sharpening filters?
My favourite is the first one... Saved that to my inspirations, you did a very good job. The last one is also very well done, seems like you used the knowledge you got from doing the drapery in your still lives.
Keep goin, even though you're busy! I will check back in two weeks and I wanna see improvement >:D Muahaha!
Keep it up, you're progressing... And watch your edges...

Tetroooo - Hey man. Good to see you're still not giving up on me. =D Yeah, I learn quite a bit about composition and typography. Which is fun. I just figured that they don't even have colors at the agency - and they don't draw anything. D: So I have to study Illustration or just Art or whatever. But I don't want do give up "real" art at all... I'm planning to visit Leipzig these days, just waiting for their reply with a date. :D I always work bigger than A3, sometimes just A3 but I figured that they are pixelated because all my digis are just screenshots because they would be too big in the original size. I tried to scale it down this time - just for you. xD
monotony - Thaaaanks. I like your ink stuff! :D
again Tetroooooooooooo - Ahhhhh! D:
I did quite some stuff but nothing useful. Just wanted to don't get killed by Tetro. ;P
I guess it's a superhero thing. ^_^

Not much of an update, just wanted to tell you guys that you keep me going.
Noro Danke! Well, shit happens! Yes, you could help me out with crits and comments. I hope to see you in here soon! ;)
adammelo Thank you! I'm checking out your sketchbook as soon as I finished this post! :D
ariel_medel Thank you! =)
Here's a redhead from a music-video on youtube. I took a screenshot of her, which was very blurry and tried to frame it out. That's why it looks kinda stylized. Quite an expierience, but I'm not really satisfied... She looks like a doll and the nose is weird... I have to study noses. xD
761609
And here I wanted to capture an atmosphere - with a brush orgy. :'D

Sweet work you got here. Thanks for the advice. I'll try to do it better the next time. But I'm a very impatient person so I can't concentrate very long :D. Also subscribed. Your life drawings and digital paintings are outstanding. Already a lot of work in here for such a short time.

hey blexano,
as I said before: great stuff in here!
The last girl looks great, maybe a little too much "soft brushed" you know? It works well with the exterior details but the face itself, especially the nose seems a bit too smooth to me :D
keep up the good work

So much German love! Hmmm... :D
Tetro - I've got a little time right now and I'm working on pencil-powaaa! Yeah, I know, just don't forget what Genie said (Aladdin series xD): "MAGIC IS WHO MAGIC DOES!"
Rushlord - Thanks! I know, I'm not that good... not yet... =D
Growling - Thankies! Well, then I have to stop by!!
Noro - Thanks! I realized that but was too lazy to chnage it. ^^ Haha, the soft brush is so tempting, istn't it? xD
jatherip - :D Thanks, very appreciated! Studies from life? Not this time, but look out I will do some more! =D
Lately I'm doing comission stuff and totally forgot to upload my stuff here.
I don't have much to show but at least something.
It's already two weeks old! D:
Two greyscale Portrsaits from head!
I wanted 'em to look awesome and was kinda disappointed... The anime influence is still visible! ö.ö How do I get rid of this! ^^

It's the first time I tried sharpening filter. I'm not sure how to feel about it... :/
Now I want some crits guys! Bang me on the wall! (Which doesn't mean "have sex with blex!" D: )

waaa! awesome man. The first one is really stunning. You used the soft brush pretty well :D
The second one is great too, but I guess there`s something wrong with the back of her head. It`s kind of too high and round. I`m not sure what it is, but it looks a bit weird.
Keep on, damn, gonna paint tons now, thx :D

Noro - Ah...hahaha, you're right. I changed the angle of her head without changing her head angle, well that was dumb. ^^ Thanks for the crit! Glad you like 'em! :D
Rushlord - Thanks! @.@
I managed to scan some anatomy studies from sunday. :D
Pencil stuff. I have to get into that again because the lines suck and the anatomy too... D:

And a pissed off bull. He was almost done as my computer crashed and I DIDN'T SAVED IT. 0.o I also painted some chains around the neck...
Now I'm pissed... cause I don't want to finish him once more.
But was lucky to save it in between.
Another reason to return to the good old traditional work. =)

Excuse the crit 'n run, but I'm really busy atm... need to go to bed.
About your anime influence: I wouldn't have noticed if you wouldn't have mentioned it... I think its only about the eyes. Maybe do a few eye studies to check your knowledge. Other than that and the deformed head, the portraits are gut gelungen (sorry, I'm not capable of writing English when I'm this tired). I like that you're also thinking of focus and edges for them.
Your pencils come along very well. Aside form the necks I think some of the shoulders are a little bulky and slightly out of proportion, mostly on the first pages. I would suggest doing some studies of the whole neck-shoulder area in different angles. Maybe you could get a mirror and study your own shoulders/neck so that you can get the reference you need to understand the form better.
Oh and your doing comissions now? Dude, thats awesome!!! You're going places *sings* ...and I'm going to bed... :dur:

SamC - You're so right, my neck suck! I'm a bit unable to imagine the muscles and bones there... study!!! but not today... I'm too tired, man! ^^
Tetrooo - I'm tired too, but I needed to drop this! Neck/Shoulder and eye studies are on my list! Thank you for the crits, you're always welcome in here, but you should have noticed that by now! xD Sleep tight bud! =)
I had to paint something today so here it is...
It turned out way to saturated as I wanted it. But oh well. ^^
I hope that I'm be able to laugh at this in a few month.

You some very nice work here! Progress since page 1 and all that good stuff. :)
I agree with Texodotoxin - some eye studies would do you some good. The latest portrait is lovely (I personally like saturated colours as long as it's done with some taste), and the face has a lot of form, except for the eyes which look very flat. You just have to remember that they are round, and curve with the face as well. Some variation in the skintones would be a plus too. Some red from underlying blood in the cheeks and eyelids etc.
Keep it up. :sungod:

Pixie Trick - Thanks a lot. I know skintones are something I have to understand and my eyes need some practice, too. :)
Rushlord - :D
PieMonster - Thanks for stopping by. There is quite some work ahead.
Today I was in Kuhardt (neighbor village) where Wolfgang Blanke had an exhibit. It was great. His paintings are so dynamic and his colors - ahhhh!!! - We talked a bit about studying art. And he told me not to give up with applying! He knows a lot of amazing students that had to go to an university in a foreign country first, because they also weren't accepted...
I'm really inspired by his paintings and person!
Where are the days when I spent 12-13 hours a day just on painting and drawing? D:
Well, my internship is soon over and then there is no other thing for me.
Spent a lot of time lately on designing logos and brochures.
I'm learning a lot, but I miss painting...
And the comissions are spawning. @_@
An old lady gave me a wonderful old book with photos of German countrymen of 1943. Their faces are so vivid and I can see a whole story of the charas.
It's so amazing that I started with studies right away! :D I layed a texture over them because it fits the book. =)
Okay so that's how we Germans look like. xD (each 1h)
788690 788692
My very first full character painting from head.
Kinda random, well, step by step... ;P
788695
A quick one of my sister.
The lighting was interesting.
788711
I'd like to do a real longer portrait of her, but she has no time when I have time. :(
Thanks for stopping by.
Now I'm going to eat some sausages with sauerkraut - like every day.

Nice expressions on the portraits. The standing character is decent but you need to watch anatomy and proportion. His right arm seems short....perhaps you were placing it into a more perspective arrangement.... but it would still be off. The connection of his gh joint to shoulder girdle looks very cramped.
Good work and keep working on full body anatomy.
blexano
September 27th, 2009, 01:27 PM
Rushlord - Thank youuu! :D
liquidjack - Thanks! You're right. I know that the arm looks wrong, but sadly I didn't know how to change it. :/ Thank you for the crit!
Today I was allowed to give my first vote in Bundestag elections! =D
Well, the result looks obvious. ^^
I also did a selfportrait from life to practice skintones. Learned a lot from it!
Almost hit the likeness. :P

jatherip - Thanks for stopping by again. :) I have so many anatomy issues it isn't even funny anymore... -.- But had fun with it! Actually I thought of joining the theme song Chow but don't know if I have the time to do so. Edit: I forgot: I use Hogarth, Gordon and Bidgeman for anatomy. Just tried Loomis for heads. Why do you think Loomis is more helpful?
I have a bad headache today. Didn't come up with anything creative so I decided to pull off some color studies from photos while chatting. :D
I have to get a more confident use to colors.
These are rather quick...

Today was my last day in the agency and what had to happen: a woman crashed into my car, which was parked and I wasn't in it or saw what happened. It rained and was really really cold and I had to wait outside till the police and the ambulance arrived. Noone got hurt, but the woman was really beat up. Good news my car still drives but still I have to give it to the car repair shop. -.-
Now I want to get better at everything. Starting now.

Hey Blexano!
Big progress over the last pages...Your studies are great!! :)
I'm really glad you decided to get away from the use of soft brushes.:D
You're handling of values and lighting in your studies is great...something that i miss a bit in your imaginary stuff.
the lighting situation sometimes seems undefined...make sure you stay consistent when it comes to lighting. And always keep in mind, in order to
define form and depth with light and shadow you need to maintain and
strenghten the contrast between those two.
For example......the darkest values in the lights should still be lighter than
the lightest values in the darks of a painting. (That helped me a lot:))
Also that when you have a very desaturated light source the shadows should be more saturated and vice versa...
....It's all about keeping lights and darks distinctive from each other.
You might know this already, but i know from my personal experience that such knowledge and considerations often get lost in pure laziness...:^^;: hehe ...so you have to force yourself to think of this stuff in each painting.
I hope you can take something out of it.
Keep on doing that figure studies, they are coming along nicely!

Very nice stuff... Glad your health is at 100% again. I wish mine was. My headache is killing me. Hab mich wohl bei dir angesteckt :P
I really like that SP. Having trouble with the postition of the eyes is very common, you can even see it on many experienced artists' pieces. Nice practice for Nov 1st. Just take a look at the "Finally Finished" - Section, there's a stickied thread about it at the top. I'm planning to participate as well, if I'm feeling better on Sunday.
And don't let things get you down! Use it as motivation. Who knows what the future has in store for you...

The Original [E] - Thanks! :D
Noro - Hey, thanks! :) btw. I'm going to apply to Münster in march. :'D
Porg - Don't ask me that, i have no clue. ^^ I do studies from mind too,
but they suck so much that I throw them right away.
(and yes someone slaped me already in the face for doing so)
jeremymoore - Thanks. =D
Bombur - Thank you.
Deathgod - Haha, yeah the pear, I have to do more stilllifes. Thanks for your comment. :D
jatherip - Thanks! Who says I'm not?! xD
Tetrodotoxin - Wow, dude, I saw you on the t-shirt.
Sooo I produced a lot of crap these days... oh boy... the pressure get's just bigger and bigger because I didn't found a place to study/work yet...
I tried to go out and then back to drawing, or shooting photos... nothing helped...
Today I started a illustration of Todesfuge (Death Fugue) a very moving german poem. If you're interested read it here (http://econ161.berkeley.edu/TCEH/Todesfuge.html)! (also in english)
Here's what I've done so far. (of course WIP)

And don't forget to have fun with the stuff you're doing!!!

Tetrodotoxin - Hey, danke! :)
Well, I usually don't share wips, but this concept is fun. :D
I redrew almost everything, because the sketch was really messy. ^^
I really enjoy this concept. Don't know if I stick with the skull, because I really took trouble with the face, but I just love the idea.
For the ear I looked in the mirror and I looked at some skulls.
The rest is from head. Edit: Added a non-skull view.

Hey Blexano. Nice link, maybe I will join if I have the time. To the goat: I like the design but as you already mentioned you could work on the pose some more (the left leg would hurt if I stood in this pose). You should also work longer on one painting and push the rendering a bit more. I'm sure it would be awesome then. Keep it up man.

November 13th, 2009, 10:26 AM
Okay, I'm gonna try a crit now, since you wanted one, but don't take it too serious, it's just my point of view on things that you could spend a little thought on while continuing:
First thing is the neck area. The transition to the clavicle is a little hard. The head seemes to be turned to the side, the muscles should reflect that. Take a look in the mirror at your own neck in that position.
His left foot (right side of the picture) seems out of perspective, like the toes were twisted counterclockwise. The toe in the back seems higher than the one in the front. Try making the position clearer as you continue your rendering.
Also, if you compare the legs, the one in front seems way longer (even with foreshortening). The thigh is nicely rendered so far, but almost twice as long as the one in the back. Maybe just "push" it back into his hip a little.
That being said, I like the head so far and you seem to have put a lot of thought in rendering the leg and knee.
I suggest for your studies that you have a look at perspective on characters as well, like foreshortening and making clear, where your character stands in the picture, what planes the feet are on and stuff.
And keep doing the crimson daggers, I'd love to join as well, if I didn't have Praktikum...

maybe if u were a goatman, that would be a comfortable pose. when i look at it i feel like u could almost completely fix it by reversing the left leg and having it beside the right?

digging the naked cheerleader on page 4 blexano. hahaha, good thing you are practicing the human body in motion, I'm still practicing to improve my anatomy overall, so I can render good characters uugggggghh.. but, of course, I have to vary out studies with imaginary characters too! don't want to let creativity to deter.. keep it up blex!!

Nice work man, you have some serious skills with digital! Really nice simple strokes which show great detail! I think for the characters from your imagination, try and get more flow into the poses - even though they're standing still, try at least tilt pelvis/shoulders/spine some - keep it up! -doing great.

Nice studies!
I see a lot of improvement in your digitals.
Might want to watch the musculature in the last one (minotaur?), especially the bicep/arm area.
Also, transition between the head and the body seems really abrupt right now.
Keep it up!

Both you're sketching and painting skills are really good. Only crit I would give you is to stay away from the whole fully plate armored knights and human/animal combined thing(I do them sometimes and I think it's ok but you know just be more creative). Anyways I think it's a good thing that you're focusing on more important things like anatomy and painting so keep it up!

Wow, mate, this is the first scetchbok I'm subscribing to in a long time! The studies look fantastic, espescially the pencilfigures from some posts back.
If you want crits, you could use some classic injection with your eyes, you could try to memorize the planes and structure around the eyes, then you would get rid of those comicky looking symbols you sometimes create.
Dont stop! There's a tremendous talent becoming active here!

Thank you so much. I'm so sorry that I can't reply everyone now. )=
Faust - I don't know what to say. :O Thank you. I won't stop.
So greetings from Thun.
I was offered a job in Thun (Switzerland) I'm there for one week now and there are so many expressions that I'm completely overwhelmed. The mountains are amazing.
On friday I had a portofolio consultation in Leipzig (12 hours from Thun by train D: ) and they told me so many things. We were three future applicants and two profs in a room.
They said, that some of my paintings look too finished and they wouldn't know what to teach me for illustration. But that I should include more typography and that I should work on my lines and that looking on Egon Schiele could help me. They saw that I really tried to get the anatomy correct but it's way more important to get the figures more plastic and making artistic choices.
I also met a lot of awesome students and collected e-mail adresses. :>
And I managed to join some classes.
So I was talking 8 hours about art and everything connected with it. And it was sooo awesome. It's so great to talk to people that see potential in your stuff and are really interested in you as a person too.
Studying in Leipzig would be really great.
They told me to apply and that the things they said weren't ment harsh but I should think if I would want to study Illustration and not Malerei, because they won't tell me how to make a painting looking even more realistic.
I have to try many typography things now and work on my lines.
The bad thing is that I have to reply until february 1st and my signed until the end of january for my job in Thun.
So no time to waste. D:
Just some stuff I already posted on the Crimson Daggers thread:
I guess there is more, just to lazy to search for it. ^_^

Wow I had a plant like that! It grew almost as high as 3m haha!
Great studies man! Maybe Leipzip isn't what you are searching for, frankly I am baffled how they say your figurative painting can't be improved at their place. Don't they have regular lifedrawing and painting classes? What about classical tradition? Design, composition? I think my respect for the school went down a bit. Good to know they catched up to phony pseudo-german fine-art traditions ...
Anyways, I hope you find the education you are looking for!

Merry Chrismas to all of you! <3
Luckers - Yup I think so, thanks...
Faust - Hehe, I just have this tiny one! ^_^ They just wanted to tell me, that I should apply for Painting and Grafic if I want to paint perfectly but I want to apply for Illustration... Of course you can learn how to paint at their place but it's not their focus in Illustration.
courtyard - Cool, you are baaack! Thankies! =D
Lee - I'm sorry this still life won't be finished. It was just a moment with intense lighting I managed to capture. Now it's grey outside... But thank you, I love your still lives so much. :D
If I would apply for Painting / Grafic they wouldn't like seeing digital stuff, I guess. But for Illustration they are fine with it. I have also some paintings etchings and marker stuff, but I prefer digital somehow... ^^
So here is a screenshot of a monster I did for my portofolio.
They wanted to see something unreal with a realistic touch.
As they said they give a shit about 100% correct anatomy...
...and so do I, now. :'D
They also seemed to like unfinished quicker sketches.

I'M FINALLY ACCEPTED!!! :D

It's not Leipzig or Karlsruhe my dream universities.
I think it's important for me to understand that i don't have to study with the "elite troop" to be good at my job. In the end it's what you make out of it.
It's not official yet.
But they gave me a hint like: "You're in!" ;)

An welcher Schule in Karlsruhe wolltest du dich eigentlich bewerben?
