Welcome to the forums Dr. popcorn :D
You have a very interesting style. I like the twisted/distorted look all these sketches have, especially the last one there.
Looking forward to more!!

Welcome to CA. Like retarded monkey was saying, very cool style. Show us more please.
The robot one is very striking. Lots of sharp edges and diagonals going on in that one.

here are some monoprints i did through print making of some hearts, the hearts are not accurate just a generalisation to suggest the form :)

Really liking this. First batch of sketches was great, nice little surprises in there (like the spray nozzle on the robot looking one). Great energy. Also I appreciate you really exploring a form in those heart studies. I like where it ended up too. Kinda reminds me of a Chuck Palahniuk book cover. Cheers dude!

this is essentially the refined image, the heart has a skewer through it, it is an illustration that would accompany a particular poem that relates to the image :)

great sketches man, I really like your pencil mark making on the chopped up faces. the heart stuff is great, nice subtle perversion of the basic forms, and the refined image looks great, nice graphic take on rather cliched imagery. whereabouts are you studying?

July 6th, 2009, 05:07 PM
Thanks bouroune! i would like to think my work was different :) here is a refined image that feature a little chick sitting on top of a big egg, it is a little confusing and the chick could be seen as a head instead, but i already know this haha! so sorry if it is confusing :) hope you like!

A painting i did not so long ago, not much to explain here really, i like the idea though that your eye would finish off the painting for me, just a couple of angles to look at, the image itself is acrylic on A2 cartridge paper :)

here are a couple of pencil studies that helped me create a refined visual for a project i did over a year ago, the refined visual is done on photoshop along with other pieces i did by hand like painting scanned in to help me create it, the piece itself is very flat and 2D, i feel there is not enough depth and contrast in the image but i guess i learned my lesson! :) comments are more than welcome!

again here is a painting i did to accompany the biotechnology project i did, there are a few viewpoints to show it, the first photo might seem that it is at an awkward angle and that is because it is :/ the bottom photo is basically straight on which is what you would view it like haha! nevermind! :) it was acrylic on A2 cartridge paper.

this is an painting i produced as a refined visual for a project i did, it show a couple of steps how it progressed and then a massive leap in change as you can probably tell, i felt i had enough of a base layer to really feel the shape of the face, so i then started to paint the image on top of it :) it is acrylic on canvas paper, about A2 and also features another element to it which i will show you in my next post! :)
Dr poPcoRN
July 11th, 2009, 09:04 AM
the purpose of the piece was to illustrate how peoples perception of people change when their appearence changes, so here is an image i already uploaded that accompanies this image and hope you can see how it changes the piece, it is pen on acetate and is overlayed on the painting you you can pull it away and replace it etc. hope you like it :)

Whoa, great style.
I really like your strokes in these paintings and the ink stuff is sick, too. :D
And these chickens are so lovely!
I really want to see more of it!!!
Ah, just one thing maybe ^^ in the last portrait you separated the face from her hair with these dark shadows too much, so it almost looks like a wig. Otherwise it looks fine. ;)
Dr poPcoRN
July 12th, 2009, 05:47 PM
freakmod: thanks for your comments :)
blexano: thanks also, yeh i noticed that, but i am too lazy to change it haha! but i will take note and make sure it doesnt happen again, the photo i was working from was over exposed so it was almost black and white with minimal amounts of mid tones so it made it harder, i guess that is why i smacked a fat outline round her head! but i should have seen it coming, not my favourite portrait to be honest, but one more under the belt :) thanks for the critique, they are always helpful :D
Dr poPcoRN
July 12th, 2009, 05:58 PM

Dude! You're on a roll!
The study of your girlfriend is really great! Your crazy style with painting and the pen are sweet as well. How long do those painting/charcoal/pen pieces take ya?
Dr poPcoRN
July 13th, 2009, 05:13 PM
retardedmonkey: thanks :) charcoal would be no more than 5 minutes if that, painting is gonna take from 15 minutes to 3 hours depends when i am happy with it i guess haha, the more i want out of it the more i work into it i would say :) pen takes longer, err maybe 3-5 hours for something i might be content with, but if it is a simple one i guess it would take less time, but to be honest it differs between each piece :) thanks for your interest!

July 13th, 2009, 05:19 PM
2 more portraits, one i has ace ventura hair haha! dont ask why because i dont know why i did it :) photo's are not the best but nevermind, the mouth and the nose on the first image dont relate very well but that was my fault for not really concentrating enough when i drew it :(

As i've looked at your work from page 1 to 3, i've noticed my jaw has dropped a good 5 meters. Mate your stuff is amazing, i love your style both your straight definitive lines and your wishy washy look on some of your other peices. Keep this sketchbook going man. And the best of luck with your BA.

Quite uniqe stuff you got here. Your linequality is superb. Would love to see some figure/anatomy studies like THIS (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=719536&stc=1&d=1247162130), just because it looks awesome, but that's probably too plain for you :)

Liquid Envy: thanks for your interest, it means alot! :)
HugeHarHar: again thanks or you comment, i should really try some washes with things, i will put some washes up soon enough, as this is not the first time someone has suggested it! thanks :)
D.C.: thanks for your input! i recently bought an anatomy book and it got delivered today, need to branch further out as most of my work is portraits haha! i should really do more things! :)
blexano: thanks again :) i am still confused about how i draw, sometimes i am rough and loose then other times i am really tight and more clinical i guess haha!
here are some paintings in acrylic, one or two i believe feature tear outs from a newspaper for a suggestive background to work on top :)

Dr poPcoRN
July 16th, 2009, 03:55 PM
Naga_Shesh: thanks for you comment :) and i tend not to unless the ink is accompanied with the pencil, i.e. the pencil is part of the image as well but i dont map out before i use my pen etc. :) hope that helps!

Your ink pieces are stunning. Great 'mark making' but still with fairly recognisable planes and form etc.
Your paintings have great texture but many feel very flat and kind of muddy. With such a loose, graphic style the softer qualities of the paints aren't helping you as much. Perhaps you need to let some of the layers dry properly before applying the next (guessing here).
Perhaps using gouache (spelling?) may be helpful to. You can thin it and use it like a wash or apply it abit thicker like acrylic. Plus it works over alot of pencils, inks etc and dries quickly.
Anyway, overall a stunning SB. Love seeing someone with such a vastly different style than myself being loose and creative. The only thing that I would like to see more of is some 'tamer' more realistic pieces. Basically to know exactly what skills you have.
Look forward to seeing more.

July 16th, 2009, 04:34 PM
SEVANS: Thanks for your comments :) i agree with everything you said, i have got a set of gouache but i am yet to even open it haha! i will have to find it i guess, i also think depth is something i should work on, alot of my pieces are just something floating in the middle of the page and i could really do with putting compositions together to help me find suitable depth etc. alot of my muddier pictures might have only taken 2 mins and i like more of an organic look in some paintings so sometimes i like it, but it isn't intentional most of the time haha! i should wash my brushes more often! thank again for the crit, i will address some more tamer subjects too! thanks! :D

Very nice work! The top version in your last post is the best one because the white background makes it pop. The cropped picture takes that away, so that was completely pointless imo (sorry if that sounds harsh - not my intention :) ). I hope you fix the wire because it is a really nice picture.

July 19th, 2009, 12:39 PM

Heya Doc P--
Nice set of work here!
I really enjoy your line quality. My favorites are where it's controlled yet maintains its free & expressive qualities (as in the birds and hearts, etc). When you really sit on your marks and lock em up tight, they get less confident-looking. (And hey: 95% people have the opposite--and far less desireable "problem", so you're ahead of the game!)
I also like seeing your visual thought process (again with the hearts and birdies!).
Of the paintings, faces 2, 3, & 4 from July 3rdwere my favorites, but most of the others seem sort of flat and unrealized...sorta like you had less interest in them than you exhibit in much of your drawing work. I'd love to see what you do with more keenly observed portraits with a more varied, yet equally muscularly applied color palette in your other paintings. (And lay offa that chalky white paint, bro! ;)! Please let me know if you post some.
Keep up the good work!
best,
Nick

rusko-berger: thanks for your comments! i can't agree more with you on the tightening up, trying to get the balance is where i want to be, as most people say, they prefer their sketchbook work to their finals and that is cos they are more relaxed when doing it and for some reason alot of people tighten up on more 'important' images and i am trying to shake the habit :) again thanks for you comments and i looked at some of your work, very impressive to say the least :)

here is a design for ''Lincoln University Snow Sports Team'' (LUSST) hoody, so if you see someone walking around with one you know who did it haha, i designed both images in pen and played around with them in photoshop, obviously the images needed simplifying for the printing process to actually work so i used some basic filters and other editing within photoshop, there are also some samples that they chose from. the drawing references were from the internet :) hope you enjoy!

rusko-berger: thanks for your comments! i can't agree more with you on the tightening up, trying to get the balance is where i want to be, as most people say, they prefer their sketchbook work to their finals and that is cos they are more relaxed when doing it and for some reason alot of people tighten up on more 'important' images and i am trying to shake the habit :) again thanks for you comments and i looked at some of your work, very impressive to say the least :)

Here is an editorial illustration, hopefully it reflects the notion of trying to achieve silence, well at least peace and quiet, not my normal way of addressing things due to the way i have drawn it, think it is a little primitive but with that it has some sort of charm, i appreciate it doesn't show too much technical ability but playing in the sand is fun, and that is what i am trying to do more in my work... in a metophorical sense that is :) 2 versions here, done in pen and then played with in photoshop. :)

Great sketchbook so far, Im a fan of the face studies with the hard lines and sharp angles. Which types of pens are you using? your style seems like it would look great with some nibs and ink.

You've got some great illustrations in here, and I love your expressive lines, they have a great energy to them. Your rendering skills are also really nice, I would like to see more studies from you though, when your not working from reference things get a bit stiff.

derss: thanks again! i appreciate your comment! :)
AustenFM: thanks alot for your comment! i dont normally use reference for much unless i am really unfamiliar with it, i could do with working more on things i am uncomfortable with to make me more loose when i am drawing them! sometimes i draw quite tight and with more lines than shading if you get what i mean. so it makes the images look quite rigid. as well as all this i need to work hard on more dynamic angles, poses and better lighting of subjects! all of which would help loose a certain stiffness some of my images have, and ultimately make them more convincing! i appreciate you crit and i agree with it :) thanks for dropping by too! :D
mysocksrock: thanks again! i agree i need some more construction lines, i have afew on the branch the raven is sat on and it looks nicer with em than it would without em! :D

here is the final version pretty much, i wont be doing anymore on it i dont think as i have gone off it! the quality is not that great as again it was taken with a camera, i am currently waiting to scan it in at the university and use their A2 scanner as that will be big enough :) until then this will have to do, i added the building on the left of the raven, not too sure whether that was a good idea now but i am still learning so that is something i can take frorom this, plus reworked the grils hair in the centre as it needed a little retouching :) i will start something different soon as i am not too happy with this one :/ crits are more than welcome! thanks :)
EDIT: the secong image is the updated one :)
finally got the beggar copied and scanned at staples, alot clearer than the photo i believe. note to self - dont go bigger than A3 next time :)

Dr poPcoRN
January 25th, 2010, 10:51 AM
sleepykit: Thanks for your nice words, glad you like the little fluff people! :D
Lav: Thank you! with regards to the collage question, it depends most of the time some of those little people were drawn together but others were moved in closer on their own. this was by using the 'multiply' option on the layers 'blending options' essentially it takes the white out of the layer so i can move them around without worrying about white areas that come with some layers if you dont remove it :) so it depends on the nature of the image really! :D
CocaTertoka: Thank you very much for the compliments :D
here is some rubbish, i did for a project for my course. the character is a little confusing, and looks inconsistent itself (for example, the legs are rendered in a wildly different manner to that of the jumper). his face is rather basic aswell! with perspective in the image, he would have to be alot smaller than the word 'EDGE', especially if it were to work as a composition based on perspective, unless he was a giant which he isn't. i realise this piece is not great but thought i would put it up anyways just to show some more of my work, crits and comments are more than welcome! as always! :D

here is a piece of work for a brief about working together and supporting each other :) I dont normally do much stuff like this as it is not my kettle of fish to be honest! the shading is intentionally naive so dont bang me out for it :)
I began by choosing something that goes back through history and everyone can understand and relate to, which was fishing. I decided to use a team of divers working together to catch fish with nets to illustrate teamwork and support. I chose to illustrate it in a playful manner and try to give the divers and fish different personalities, something that is often found in teams. Considering there is a team of divers and there is also a team of fish, I would hope it puts further emphasis on teamwork and working together. I hope it communicates the concept of the brief well enough!

mike butkus: Thanks again mike! I appreciate you stopping by :)
Inishmore: Thanks for the comment :) I totally agree about the muzzle! it is due to my shading on the right hand side of the nose, it was one of those times when i was drawing and i just wasn't concentrating on the form at that point cos i had the tv on; so ended up hatching it completely wrong but it was only a very quick sketch so not worth my time revisiting. thanks for the crit though! much appreciated!

Hey peeps! been a little while since my last update due to the volume of work i have on at the moment! so sorry for that :)
here is a digital character painting i created; not much to say really, it is what it is :)
the real size image is 600 dpi and approx 7000 x 5000 pixels, so he is pretty darn big! i guess probably quite close to life size in actual fact.
The first image is approx 15% of actual size and the second image is even smaller so it is easier to see on screen. the other images are detail cuts from the original; the last detail cut of the gun is also about 50% of actual size.
crits and comments are more than welcome, i know there are problems with some aspects of him but thought better to learn and leave, rather than endlessly repairing the image til it was ultimately fixed; every image is a learning curve so i know i wont make some of the mistakes i made in this one on the next! :)
done entirely on photoshop apart from the pencil sketch to map out his form.
no reference used at all apart from for the MG42 - everything else is out of my head.
comments are more than welcome and hope you like :)

nice updates, and cool character concept, i love how you did the pants, details on the gun, value on the grenades and the collar. Just 2 small observations if i can be nitpicking, the gun has a value less contrast than some of the other items in your paint (for example grenades), and the hair a bit undefined to me, is it a hat is it an afro, is it a dead skunk? it's a mystery! But like i said, it's just nitpicking, other than that i think it's very bad ass! :D

Lav: Thank you very much for your comment! I agree with both of your crits :) I honestly forgot to revisit his hair (it is an afro) an the gun could do with being a touch darker on the right hand side :)

Your pen and ink work is phenomenal! I'm digging your style, and the motion you've got going through everything, especially those charcoal pieces. Amazing!

Really enjoyed looking through your SB, love your pen and pencils sketches.
I also like the way your not afraid to explore different techniques and ideas, that's really refreshing!
Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing future updates.
Cheers,
Quinn

Another quick environment :) i will probably do a few more; then revisit and rework some colour into them i think! :D

another quick one! very basic, so sorry about that! but the more i do the better! i will lay colour over all of these black and white enviro's at some point; but just banging out the grayscale at the moment :)
apologies for the staggered updates but i start something new as soon as i have updated and sometimes it doesn't take too long :)

#228 brilliant sketch, it has a tremendous senses of energy, a moment caught in time, and has the same dramatic effect as sketch #237. Great job!

really digging the environments, did you use costum brushes for it?

mike butkus: Thank you so much mike, always honoured by your comments :)
Lav: hey lav! thank you for comment! :) the brushes i use are a real mix to be honest, some default, some custom, and some have been picked up along the way too from other artists! i always change the brush presets as i am painting though, if i see a nice area in my painting that could be used as a brush, i tend to just define a brush from it :) i really tend to just play around alot with the brushes, the best ones are the ones you don't expect :) i occasionally drop some patterns in as well but not too often and sometimes i might lift some texture from a photo i have taken. mixed bag of nuts really!
Another quick study, the top half of him is too static compared to the legs and perspective is abit shot too, should have seen it coming! i will remember for next time :) a pretty generic mech design to be honest but all practise! :)

Thanks for the great structured sketches. :eyecandy: I was inspired to try lines on photographs. Might be a faster understanding of the form.

The environments from the last page look sweet.
The mech is cool too. My only thoughts would be that maybe it could use some harder edges to give it a more definite shape.
Always excited to see more.

Shape and texture is good man, but they could use a little more form.
Look for some shapes that might add that little bit of '3D' to the design and they will look they have a place more.
I think the mech at the bottom of the last page works more because it has a sense of form more. Its alot more 3d feeling.
Awesome work though, love you unique approach to everything. Keep it up :)

Cool textures and drawings. I think you can go easy on the darks... theyre looking too black which can flatten things. Maybe try discipline yourself to do some paints in the mid tones and try resist going too dark from the get go

Thank you for visiting my stuff.
I'm not sure what to say about your work, as it's digi and I'm not familiar with digital painting techniques. However, I am familiar with value and so forth... much of what you're doing is landscapes from quite a distance away, so there's not much opportunity for me to give you much useful advice. For now, anyway. I'll keep coming back to look, though.
Maybe do some figure studies... drawing from nature is the greatest teacher.

sketchibo: Thanks for your comment! i have to agree with you about the edges, especially with regards to the first of the two mech studies; it is really quite soft edged in some places :)
PHATandy: Thank you very much for the comment! the 2nd of the 2 mech studies is very flat, partly because it is a side on projection rather than a dynamic pose. I totally agree about the shapes as well, the shapes i have used in it are pretty predictable and bland, something more interesting like cylinders and sockets etc might have spiced him up a bit too! I would have worked into it more to suggest a much more 3 dimensional feel but liked some of the accidental lines in it so left it really quite early on rather than develop it :)
Bendragon: Thanks for the comment ben! you are spot on too, it is always a better idea to work the darker areas in at a later point. I am starting to sketch using mid tones now instead of the heavy black lines, then worker the darker areas in later. Just like on that caharacter on the previous page there is a heavily shadowed area all over the right side of his body which just doesn't work, it make it very flat as well; some thing that wont happen again hopefully, got to learn the hard way sometimes :) thanks for your crit, i really appreciate it :)
p sage: Thank for your kind words! i alway try to draw from life whenever i can, trying to find some life drawing classes too :)
