Ok now, here we are again.. I really liked the progress I made with my previous sketchbook but it died because of server reasons. Now I have found another server and hope the adventure continues as well as it has so far..
Now then, I am not going to bore you with many intro pictures except two... Here they are.
This is one of my best pieces imo.. I like how the shading came out. But I know there are a whole lot of problems with it.. some say it looks kind of cavewomanish.. What do you think?
http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/v31/talmir/woman5.jpg
And then theres me :) A self portrait.. Not really as much like me as I had hoped to be able to get.. but still the best (and only) portrait of me.
http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/v31/talmir/selfport1_reworked2.jpg
Thank you and I hope to see a lot of people coming in and commenting since crits make me better faster.
Cheers :chug:

I think the picture at the top is good. i do also think it looks like a cavewomen a bit. It think its because of the lib and the way they protrude. if you put the chin back and drag the lips back it should change its appearance. That area (around the chin has a distinct curve when you are looking at it from a side on veiw. Grab someone nearby and have a look. The other picture is good the shading is good. One thing though from the postion of the chin im getting the felling that the head should be tilted up a bit but the rest of the face doesnt suggest this. Try enlarging the dark area under the nose. That help.
All good, keep it up!
Can you check my sketches out?

Welcome back Talmir!
on the first image, i think the eyes are to far up near the brows, otherwise, it's a very good sketch and the shading is great!:)

I'll take a stab at it:
If anything I think that it's fine except the nose is slightly flat and the forehead is a little low, but not to the point of not looking human, she just doesn't look like an elf or something like 90% of female characters you see.

Thanks for the great comments guys..
I've been in a low over the holidays but now I'm coming back and going to dazzle you with awesome displays of my artistic might!!! ehemm... or not.. anywho.. here's the first offering for the year. I feel like I lost a bit of skill by taking a pause like that as will be seen in this pic. Spork891.. this is for you :)
http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/v31/talmir/elffemale2.jpg
I tried drawing an elf female like I think they should look.. if you are a forrest dwelling race then I think you need to be a bit rugged to survive.. and the thing with the ears.. I think that pointed ears dont need to be six feet in length :P

Uh oh, the elf girl looks like she just ate something pretty bitter! ;)
Something is going on with those lips I just can't tell what... Did you use a reference?
talmir
January 9th, 2004, 05:12 AM
No reference.. There are still a few problems I have to fix before being able to construct the face well enough to leave it alone and focus on other things.. like the lips.. there are also a few things with the eyes and so on... The artist is never happy :)

Talmir,
Nice improvement. You're doing a lot better on faces since last I posted. Sorry about the extended hiatus, I was at home without a computer for a month. I'm back at school now, and I'll be updating my own sketchbook shortly.
Have you been able to buy any anatomy books yet?
Sincerely,
Chris

Sorry about my lack of postings now.. I'm suffering from frustration. Whatever I've tried drawing recently has failed miserably and is not worth mentioning. I havent had any inspirations since christmas :( Feel like I got into a routine.. no visible improvements in anything I do.. urg..
Oh well, going to work on it.. hope to post some soon.

never fear talmir(ooo it rhymes!)
i can see improvement from this sketchbook and the last one! i'm struggling with the inspiration thing at the mo too, gets you down, just keep on sketching!
you could try some of the following;
-try doing loads of self portraits, to improve understanding of face sape and shadow
-use an anatomy book and sketch anything and everything from it!
- do some more of those cool elf concept things(just because you can!!!!!!!!)
-try using different mediums, paint (digital or otherwise)
-drink lots of beer then grab a pencil and start doodling!!!!!
well there you go, some very inspirational things! (except the last one!!!)
whatever you do, keep posting!:D :chug:

But if you need an inspiration, try take a trip to the countryside when you have the time. A diffirent scenery always helps me

hmmm i would suggest u to do less shading and focus more on the forms and lines! cuz ur shading can be brilliant but it is without effect when the form is wrong! Plus ur shading will get better when u really start understanding the form. shading cant improve ur lines
thats only my opinion ;)
keep giong

Hey Talmir I got your message...thanks for the encouragement.
I definitely know how you feel hitting a wall and all...ok you are gonna have to trust me and do some things that you may not think will be helpful but trust me they will be.
Ok first off...if you really want to learn to draw (I mean if you truly want it) you will need to spend about 4 - 8 hours drawing each day...there is no way around it. If you want to get good even faster draw for 12 hours a day...etc... Ok that being said you are probably thinking "What should I draw for 8 hours a day? Here is the proposed curriculum I have for you:
3 Bargue drawings (pencil)
8 cast drawings (3 with charcoal + paper, 5 with white chalk, charcoal, and paper)
3 grisaille oil paintings of a cast (just a black and white oil painting of a cast)
4 still life paintings (2 limited palette, 2 full palette)
4 figure paintings
(Unlimited paintings from this point on)
Also while you are doing all of this you need to do all of this every day as well:
(construct (with bridgman help etc...) these from memory every day at least - 1 hand drawings, 1 heads/faces/neck, 1 torso, 1 arm drawing, 1 leg drawing, 1 foot, 1 full body
Also if you want to work digitally you need to do studies from life digitally and/or studies from photographs like
Ok for the bargue drawings check out our thread here:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12104
For information on cast drawing look here:
http://drawsketch.about.com/cs/sightsizemethod/ (p.s. I would use your pencil not calipers but either will work)
I will be here to help you along the way. Be assured that everything I just wrote will take years to do...but I will be doing them myself as well...we will learn together and you will be awesome at the end of it. Now the question comes...how bad do you want it?

Mindcandyman, I can not express how happy I am to get such an in depth answer.. I appreciate your help along the way. So I understand correctly.. I should always be working on at least one of the formerly mentioned (bargue, oil, paintings) and every day I should do the anatomy constructions?
Answer: Very much. I will have to start off with four hours pr.day and slowly increase.. you know.. get myself used to sitting and painting/drawing so much every day :)
I dont own all the equipment you specified so I can not start most of this yet.. have to work with what I have.. hmm. As soon as I have collected all I need I will start full time.. until then constructing the figure with bridgmans help and pencilled still life will have to do (a week or so :P ) But I will start following that curriculum as soon as I am able to.
I am not really familiar with the terms full and limited pallette except when related to computer graphics..
Full palette : All colors I can muster
Limiter paletta : Limited selection.. for example red, yellow, blue or such?
I dont have any plans of moving into digital art yet.. I like the traditional methods too much but someday maybe.
Again.. thank you Mcm :)

So I understand correctly.. I should always be working on at least one of the formerly mentioned (bargue, oil, paintings) and every day I should do the anatomy constructions?
Yes exactly...do the anatomy constructions every day (of course there will be other things along the way like drawing houses...castles...etc...lots of fun stuff but do the anatomy exercises everyday)
For the Bargue drawings all you need is a pencil, paper, a kneaded eraser, a thread, and a hard smooth drawing surface (drawing board of some kind)...you will doing bargues for a while trust me hehe ;)
I am not really familiar with the terms full and limited pallette except when related to computer graphics..
That's exactly right...first you would paint with a limited amount of colors and then slowly move into full palette.
I dont have any plans of moving into digital art yet.. I like the traditional methods too much but someday maybe.
Good for you!
Again.. thank you Mcm
You're welcome...I've received so much help...I like to help others...I can't wait to see your work!

talmir,
i am like most people here and can totaly relate to what you are going through. Just keep working and never be satisfied always want more frm yourself but note yor accomplishments.
i think you should do both pieces since they both interest you in some way you should just have at them both. well that is what i would do :D

You need to at least do two bargue drawings so I would do them both but do the back one first because it is a lot less complicated than the foot. I like that foot one though it's nice. I also did that back one for one of my bargues although it looked a tad different.

Yeah, I'll start on that one. But I'm a bit afraid the pic will look distorted as I enlarge it for printout. oh well.. guess not since your printouts seem to be ok :)
Today I was really really busy.. I'm planning to move to denmark next summer and its taking abit of my time recently.. So I couldnt draw a whole lot today.. But concience nagged at me and I had to do the figure constructions for today.. I did the full figure construction as well but I dont consider it worthy of showing as it got botched.. But here you can enjoy my latest products.. MCM curriculum, day 1.

good job talmir...don't worry about shading at this point though...try to learn at this point how to suggest form without putting any shading in...that will just complicate things at this point and you aren't ready for it...so just stick with line...pay attention to your line weight (thickness of the line) and see how that affects things as well.
As far as doing painting in photoshop...I would do this...don't paint an apple but paint basic geometric shapes...paint a cube...cone...etc... Actually make one out of cardboard if you can and draw it...drawing these simple shapes will really help you later. Good job! Keep going...keep that conscience!

good job talmir although I think you need to spend more time or be more careful on these bridgman studies. The body portions you are drawing are out of proportion...start off just doing exact copies of his drawings in the book. Try to do it with your eye at first and then just do quick measurements with your pencil to see if you are right or not. Keep it up just remember though at this beginning stage it's more important to do it right than do it ten times. Later on repetition is key as well but for now learn to train your eye. Keep it up!

Hey Talmir, amazing improvement buddy! I agree with MindCandyMan on what you should study and especially the amount of time you spend on it. Granted jobs, church, family, and significant others encroach on your time but it's a great goal to strive to draw/paint for eight hours a day, let alone twelve! Some other things I can recommend you draw to attempt to apply your knowledge would be:
1. Crowds of people. Any local zoo, coffee shop, library, mall, movie theater or other tourist trap has more than enough models. People waiting in lines tend to stand VERY still...
2. Household objects. Draw your computer, more fruit, the light fixtures, the door hinges, closets, chairs, couches... anything and everything.
When drawing objects, treat it like you're drawing a figure. How can you sketch it as if it had life and was moving? Try it and see the magic that appears on your pages.
Also make sure you get proportions and BALANCE correct in your studies. Most of your Bridgman studies are leaning to much to the right. Are you left-handed?
Sincerely,
Chris
