Hi all,
my old webhost shut me down, turning my previous sketchbook into three pages of red x:s.
So i had to start a new one. This one.
Heres a pic to start things.
Itīs an arctic hunter. Painter 8. As fast as i could make it to see if www.photobucket.com worked.
Edit: I removed the pic because of bandwith limitation, scroll down for newer pics.

Wow, the last painting has a lot of potentional. I like the architecture and the alien mood that the colours create. The mountain structure in the background could have been larger, though. Try adding a road that leads to the mountain or something. Mabye you could raise the height of the canvas...
I`ll be watching you:D

the tones in that kind of remind me of this work:
http://www.gfxartist.com/community/member_galleries/artworks/20467
I dunno if the foreground element is really doing alot for it though.. what if you got rid of it and instead developed the canvas to compliment that cool looking tree thats growing out of the top left corner?
cool doodles, too!

Heres some card art for a prototype game, they wonīt go into print, but will be used inhouse during playtesting. I did these and the cardlayout in two days (i canīt show you the layout, sorry), so iīm pretty proud of myself. If you have the time, let me know what you think.

Nice painterly feel...
I didn't know you have a dsb...
Do you ever sketch on real paper? It seems that you start the pieces right on the computer...i am just curious because i rarely sketch on paper, since it needs much time for scanning and i never find the "ctrl+z", what drives me sometimes crazy...
OLSEN
July 26th, 2004, 04:00 AM
Except for anatomy studies, the only time i draw on paper is when i plan a larger digital painting thats going to print, and then itīs just stickfigures anyways. Somehow i find it easier to plan the composition that way.
I really need to learn how to draw really fast though, since i canīt bring my computer to Berlin, and i donīt want spend my time there drawing stick figures.

I made this one for the new middle class thing, so you may have seen it earlier. I only rendered half of it and then flipped it, so it may look a bit bleh in the middle.

@Fozzybar: Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.
@Molly: Thanks buddy, I'm really glad you found something in here you liked!
@dCepT: If you're ever in Sweden, please drop by. I'm not a frequent Norwegian tourist.. so i doubt I'll end up there anytime soon. Was there when i was 7 or 8.. Oslo was cool.
@Groover: Thanks!
@Dennal Floss: I do most of my sketches on the same canvas as my finished pieces.. i only use my real life sketchbook for doodling and lifedrawing.. Much of the stuff in here is what i consider sketches too.
@MIKECORRIERO: Hey man. I really need to step up to keep up with you guys. Thanks!
Sorry, but theres nothing new tonight.. i did upload some wip shots though since some people asked for it.. Don't see it as a tutorial or anything like that. Feel free to crit the workprocess if you find anything weird. The pic was done done with Painter8 in a couple of hours.
Step1. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs1.jpg) Doodling some cloudshaped.. clouds.. Just to get rid of the spooky white canvas. I use a spunge brush in painter for this.
Step2. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs2.jpg) Doodle. I do alot of these before i'm pleased with the pose and the silhouette.
Step3. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs3.jpg) More doodling. trying to block in the shapes and stuff. Keeping it simple and zoomed out.
Step4. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs4.jpg) Some darks and stuff.. painted some white in the background to make the silhouette stand out a bit more. Using a huge smeary brush
Step5. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs5.jpg) Some gold stuff and just a little detail. I'm more or less sure now what i want to do with the pic.
Step6. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs6.jpg) Messing with the colors some to make them more pleasing. Put something vaguely ground looking beneath the character too.
Step7. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs7.jpg) Cleaning up the torso and the head some.
Step8. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs8.jpg) Shield and spear...
Step9. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs9.jpg) Added some pixels to top and sides so i can fit a background in there. Doodled some abstract shapes in the BG to frame the character.
Step10. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs10.jpg) Just playing around with it some more.
Step11. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs11.jpg) And some more...
Step12. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs12.jpg) Decided i wanted some blue light from the top.. repainted alot of the character to make it fit with the new light..
Step13. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs13.jpg) Worked some on the BG.. Getting slightly bored with the picture now.
Step14. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/ksm_olsen/sbs14.jpg) Some final changes.. and it's done!
Cheers!

Hello,
thanks for all the kind words, really makes me want to push myself as far as possible. :)
Heres an early WIP.. A friend of mine ordered some prints from me and this is the first one. The theme is Rome.. the other two's theme are ancient greece and ancient egypt. Original size is 6000x3800 something, so theres a lot your missing.. I'll post updates here as i work more on it, and some closeups later on too. Crits and comments are welcomed.

I worked some more on the WIP, but i decided to blow it up to 8000x5000, and working that size takes forever for me.. so i haven't done enough to justify an update.

nothings up really, just doodling and painting as always. Glad you found something here that inspired you. Hows it going? :)
Still no update on the WIP, it's been put on ice for the moment. Got some quick painter sketches though.

Hey Olsen dude. Some nice speed paints, they have good action/movement in all them. I really like the first one. The second one is rather comfusing to look at, maybe hes being stabbed? The last one is nice too, hes a strange looking fellow. I am curious about how long did these each take? *cough cough comic....*, oh excuse me :bashful: . hehe.

*cough cough* Don't mention the comic.. 8)
nah, just kidding...I'll try to get back into it ASAP.
Not sure how long they took me.. 10-15 minutes i think, not sure though. The first one probably took a little longer..
Thanks for dropping by man. :)
Another one.. this time in PS, i hate painting in that program..

hahahah. this new one is an interesting character. Your PS work and painter work looks similar, the new one to me actually looks more like a quick painter one. I just started using PS again a few days ago, Painter was getting too easy for me. If you get the chance go check out the guest self portrait section and check out some of my SPs, the last one i did was in PS, the rest are all painter.

Good morning folks. :)
flex mathews: Thank you.
Skank: Nooooo, not teh pickles, you've ruined my thread!!! ;) OC is fun, but i'm not on mirc that much anymore, but go ahead and add me if you're on MSN or AIM, would be cool to doodle some together.
Bretton: Thanks man, glad you dropped by.
Matt Smith: I'll drop by and check your SP's. I kinda like how painter works with opaciy and flow, works good for sketching, but if i had to do a finished piece in PS, I'd cry myself to death. I just don't think it handle pixels as good as Painter.
Behemo5: Thanks.
Wart: Thanks, I'll keep it up.
Thanks for dropping by all! :)
Heres some new stuff i did for the Eliphos (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=38) project, go have a look in case you've missed it.

Yo, yo, yo
Hey OLSEN mate, I just love this last pic here, especially the 'CrowBar' sign, what a cool name for a bar (I bet you'd find us 2 in there drinking Vodka!)
Great atmosphere you got going in there, you can image 'industrial-rock' music blarring out and a few drunks outside! hehe... Great start for Eliphos!
Also, the guy hanging in the rafters there, that I like alot too, and the smokey city, you got the vibe going on; pollution, grey haze, much like London....:)
(which makes me ask - when you coming over bro????)
SEPT 10th - nice figures going on. I'm digging the jumping dude, I like the pose you got there, and movement...
The pic you did in PS - thats a really cool figure - I know you hate PS, but its a good start. Maybe take it back into Painter and noodle more with it?...I use PS all the time, but would love to get into Painter, its the brushes and blending thing Im after...I'm awaiting a copy...:)
SEP 6th - the head, I would like to see that one finished. It's kinda creepy in a way, I'm diggin the pale, almost bleached glow on the face there...niiiice
More Eliphos sketches please. At the mo, I'm gathering inspiration from fellow CA.orgians for the character stuff. |ntern posted a char called Hugo, and I'm doing some sketches for that...will post as and when...man, I need to update:)
Keep at it bro!

Yo yo yo Molly, thanks for dropping by. Crowbar, you, me, vodka. Sounds like good times to me. :vodkamachine:
The London trip is still not decided upon.. I'm extremely low on cash at the moment.. got a few small gigs i hope to get some money from though... but i'm still not sure when and how a I'm going to get payed for those. It's just a matter of time before i get there though.
Got some more eliphos sketches here, i'm definitly leaching inspiration from Berlin for these...
A thug. Sketched in PS, then cleaned up in Painter. It's still a WIP, and theres a few weird things going on in it i need to fix. The perspective of the axe is a bit off, and i really want to clean it up alot more.

These sketches are really great sketches you got going for ephilios. Just keep practicing your photoshop. One comment I do need to make though, in some of your figure pieces, you need to watch proportion. Especially the blue one with the flash light, the proportion is absolutely killing the piece. I think my favorite one is the "Crowbar" piece. I love the hints of people through the window in the bar. Really nice. Keep it up.

Got a small dump tonight.. They're for a project i'm going to start working on soon, if all goes well. The style is ripped from some illustrations in a swedish army manual from the 80's, not my choice, but it was fun trying out something new.

OLSEN: the duck was so mean that I went colorblind!
Great, great set of work. Your mastery of Painter is overwhelming. I think it is very nice how you can have some different colored space around a figure and it doesn't distract at all, in fact it adds to your style... like the character's aura or something.
KEEP ON KEEPIN ON!

Yo people,
@Marie: Thank you. I'm really glad you found the work in process shots usefull. :)
@FuT: Thank you. Grasshopper will rock on. (or atleast try to..)
@Nagash: Thanks, glad you found something here you liked. :)
@dCepT: I may take some of them further now that you mentioned it.. we'll see what thappens. Thanks for dropping by.
@guggenmaneuver: Thank you, i wouldn't call it mastery though, i have barely scratched the surface of that program. But i'll keep scratching..
@Farmer: No, you're dangerous... isn't that a Top Gun quote? anyhow... thanks for dropping by. I'll try to post more polished stuff for a while..see what happens. :)
@Bretton: Thank you. It's fun doing those loose sketchy ones. I wish i had a larger tablet for them though, it's kinda hard to get the dynamic strokes i'm looking for on a microscopic tablet. :)
Heres a WIP. Done in painter.. it's a forest spirit shrine.. needs alot of more work though..and i'm starting to doubt some of the design choises i made in it.. but i'm still moving things around in it, trying to find what i'm looking for.. whatever that is. The finished piece will most probably not look like this, but i'll post it anyways.

I'm glad to see more work here! Your skill with the speedpaint genre is most enjoyable. The information is always present, while the execution is loose, but in the neatest way. The blues the ambers, and the reds are most powerful and pleasing to the eye.
