You've got a great grasp on metals. Almost photo realistic, imo.

The legs on that last one are a mess. There is no way her right leg could naturally protrude that way. And her left is very fleshless. Thighs are generally fattier, it looks a little deflated right now. And it may be a little too short, though I can't tell.

Your skin shading is getting better. : )

aw man I saw that car and my heart was crushed...that blows. On a side note you are rocking those studies. I love that one you did with the redbull and laptop. You pushed that one nicely. Not bad with those 20 min studies too! Keep it up man and nice work!

.:WoLf:.
November 2nd, 2009, 05:19 PM
Trashy: I'm glad you like them :) I spend more than 20 min on red bull cans but right now i'm doodling color palete so i try to do the best i can in 20 min.
Once i'll be good enought at speed painting i'll spend more time on images (2,4 or 30 hours).

Another set of speed painting for today. I found out that i brush shiny glossy elements much better than enviroments. I totaly suck in brushing trees and rocks. You can see that if you compare 2nd and 6th image with 4th

I didn't mention jet that i'm a left-hander.
The weird thing about this is that i use left hand only for drawing and writing (it's useless for anything else). Everything else i do with right hand because i have much more control and power.

For example.. it's kinda hard to me to eat soap with left hand. Or ride a bike with only left hand (i can ride it easily with right). I can't hold a mouse with left hand - right one is master for that. I can't wash my ass with left hand :D

So anyway.. i decided to try draw with right hand and i'll keep triing for next 1 or 2 months. If i'll get used i'll keep drawing with right.

Here are first attemps (notice that i have never draw or write with right hand):

Hahahha The coffee spillage is hilarious :P Oh man! Anyway... Great to see so many studies! Really great! Keep doing that. I see you have a good knowledge on how to render metallic textures as theres quite a gap between the rendering u pull off on those compared to other surfaces. Id say focus more on the weaker surfaces and try bring them up to what you can do with the metals. Some still life of those perhaps.
Watch out with the figure proportions. They're quite wonky. But your still life shows that you can measure so maybe you need to look as hard with the anatomy stuff. Keep rocking!

Novbert
November 11th, 2009, 07:54 AM
some kickass sketches here, really good sense of color, also nice posemaniacs studies.
Only one thing: Watch out for the length of your characters legs. It's a typical problem but you tend to draw them shorter than they supposed to be.

.:WoLf:.
November 11th, 2009, 01:36 PM
Bendragon & Novbert: first of all thanks both for comments.

It's surprising to me that there is such a enormous gap between your digitals and your studies, and between your environments/objects and anatomy!

The digital stuff is fantastic, the anatomy still has a lot of work (same for me minus the great digital stuff :D).

It's almost as if you are having problems getting things like faces right, while you can paint photorealistic metal...

Keep it going, between now and a year you'll nail it and I'll come back even more jealous than I am already!!

I added your SB to my subscriptions so keep it coming alright? ;)

.:WoLf:.
December 16th, 2009, 04:34 PM
Cranberry: Thanks for comment. I have never draw traditional. I started traditional studiing this summer (July 09) and i have never really study in digital. All i've study as you could noticed is rendering - shading/lighting and colors. If i take time, i can brush metal very good - i've done that a lot. But i'm stil a beginner in everything.
The problem is (what a lot of beginners do) is that i've started to play with colors because it's more fun, but i couldn't draw a cake.
This month i decided to start studiing seriously. There is A LOT of studies in my sketchbook. I study ca. 6-8h per day (few for traditional - anatomy, perspective, gesture/contour drawing, from life, few for digital - values/colors).
1 week ago i couldn't draw figure from head. In 7 days i spend ca. 30h for gesture and contour drawing. I can draw figure from head now.

PS: as i've mentioned before.. last month i decided to start draw with right hand (i'm left-hander) so studies from last month to today in this sketchbook are made with right hand. This skull is also made with right hand.

Now that cranberry has mentioned it yes, i see quite a huge digital-traditional gap, but that will soon disappear if you keep those studies up! :D

Really nice figure and skull studies.
Your hands are pretty good too, have nice lines, but they look as though you have copied the lines, without understanding to much why you have placed them there.
Pay more attention when you draw them. :)

About your latest digital work, you have really nice colours, especially for the chair and clothing, your skin tones are pretty good, but there's barely any shadows or highlights!!
You really should define those more.

Cranberry
December 18th, 2009, 08:13 PM
That last digi looks really nice! The skin tones look very good and I like the portrait a lot.

I do think, however, that both hands look strange. Hands are difficult to draw, it's a mental thing that you can easily get over by simply drawing/painting a lot of hands. I know how hard it is, I have a lot of problems with hands as well.

I'm sure you'll get them right if you study them, I see a lot of studies so maybe you could add a few hand studies a day, I'm sure that will help you along!

.:WoLf:.
December 19th, 2009, 05:15 PM
BlackDelphin: yeah.. i have to study a lot. I'll do my best. Thanks for C&C
Cranberry: yep, hands were pain in the ass and they still suck. I did few studies from Bridgman and few from photo but i have to do a loooooooot more.

Holy cow, that last post is real good. The gap between your trad and digi is stilll there, but I'm hoping you're working on it :), in the last post in think there's some issues with the perspective. In addition to that the waterfall doesn't really sell too well.
The angle you did is really cool, I kinda see it as a MTG card. The tones could show the skin a bit more, like on the torso.
Great job man :)

Oh wow that's a big update. Some good stuff, love the rendering. For the skulls use a medial (middle line). The skull's really easy but you have to get a few things right. The temporal lobe which you put and the medial line are a key element. Follow the surface when using a medial line as well, it follows the front head, then goes in for the nose, then back out, then 2 bulges for the teeth. Also careful about perspective on some of the drawings, the chairs in particular. make a construction first, get it ll nailed down then add details and all. It helps to draw through the object as well, and think in simple forms.
To get back to the previous post, the angel's boobs look very flat. there's no underlying form on the shirt she's wearing as if the boobs suddenly disappeared.
Hope this helps :)

This month passed one year since i started to take art seriously. I've never draw (except what i had to in primary school), just paint (color).
Kinda weird when you want to color but you cant draw, so i bought my first sketchbook last July. Since then i try to draw every day (from 2 to 8 hours).

Here are some images from first cketchbooks (first set of pictures) and some images from this year (second set). There is A LOT of Brigdman, Loomis, Bammes and Hogarth, i just didn't scan it because you all know how those studies looks like :p

SP - Self Portrait
FP - From Photo
FL - From Life

And picture of sketchbooks i've filled in that 1 year (23 sketchbooks).
I was left-handed so i decided to learn write and draw with right hand. All drawings in second pack were draw with right hand.

C&C welcome!

aww man coffee spill! and i think that put you off your amazing skill to draw more industrial and technical stuff because you did a great job on that M3. as for your still lifes' just goes to show they are the best thing to get you drawing better. I would say to you, go for IDW i think you would be good at that :)

i think your need to broaden your rendering methods with pencil, with almost any artist they have multiple ways of showing different forms and textures, what your doing is just one method of pencil rendering applied everywhere which makes it hard to get a feeling of how things are.. for instance with your bold hard edged rendering it makes all the faces seem really rough when in reality faces are smooth.

It's great that your sketching so much and doing so many studies. I can already see a lot of improvement from page 1. Are you still using a bamboo? I find them very unwieldy.
Keep up the practicing and maybe work on the hues of your skin tones a a little more. They're coming out looking a little saturated and dull. Try including more colors. This last post has the best skin tone yet. It looks really good.

Fantastic progress dude! You are getting very good at this. Keep it up. I need to get on that digital rendering soon. Hey, Ill teach you how to render traditionally, you teach me how to render digitally!! lol
Anyways, I was just going to say that if you are working from life(which I prefer over photos), try looking really hard for depth. Push the details more on the areas that are close to you and let the things in the back go--you already know this but I thing you should try pushing it a little more. It'll get you more realism.
Nice work!

Still looooooong road before i'll be able to draw myself like i actually look.
I noticed that i rush too much on studies. For example i don't spend more than 15-20 min on selfportrait, which probably isn't good at all :/.

I've never traced the image because i thought you don't learn anything from tracing. Now i think i was wrong.
I made example of tracing (selfpotrait). Few lines were traced but everything is based on basic knowledge of drawing potraits (loomis, bridgman,..).
I haven't learn a lot from this tracing but i for sure did learn what i was doing wrong in previous selfpotraits - which is the most important thing.

Man you are a beast, rendering those still life's.
And not to mention digital metal renderings. Amazing.
Do you have some tips for those shiny things, how to render them?
Some video tutorial or something?
I am not so satisfied with your pencil skills and with your head
and face studies. You should work on those areas a bit more.
Overall, you are headed in the right direction, you just keep pushing.

.:WoLf:.

LtPlissken: Thanks for C&C man! I think my rendering are far from anything i could call good. Only thing i could tell you is that you just have to practise. That's it. Look at the metal object you have at home and draw them all day long. You'll be better than me in no time.
I totaly agree about pencil drawing. I totaly suck so i decided to spend more time on traditional studies reather than digital.
Thanks again and happy new year to everyone!

Your face sketches show that you're really paying attention to the most important information to visually include. They have nice volume to them despite being only 5-10 minute sketches.

I like the moody shading of your most recent character. The proportion of her arms are a bit off though...something to consider if you continue with the drawing.

i know a lot of the stuff here is quick doodles n stuff. one good thing is to always thoroughly define the sillhouette. Especially in the speed paintings. This will give your work an immediate read of depth and will create clarity in your compositions.

.:WoLf:.
August 26th, 2011, 07:08 PM
gunsbins: Thanks :)
Aryeh: yes, most of my work is pretty fast. I don't want to concentrate on any kind of details.
In my opinion i still try to make too clear shapes. I would rather like to draw and paint loose with strong composition, idea and color palete, like Craig Mullins instead of some pointless detailing, perfect shapes,..
In other word.. i would like to start express myself, not to draw like in books..
But studies will reamain academic.

Anyway.. i'm aiming on something between expressionism (not abstract) and realism so where watcher would see both, power of anatomy ant other knowledge and how can i imply that in artistic way.

A LOT of hard work is on my road. I'm ready for it every day more and more

Here is some quick girl from imagination. Hard brush, opacity set to 100%, one layer and limited color palete are just to make it harder
