I would suggest looking around cnet.com and testfreaks.com for ratings. I personally stayed away from the all in one as I didn't want to pay for features I wouldn't use(Fax, Copier). For myself I'm happy with my conoscan lide 100 which I got from Walmart for $60. My Epson 1400 printer does a great job and it was $180, though that was on sale. You may be able to find a manufaturer refurbished at that price. Take a look at the epson site.

There are plenty of relevant threads if you search here. I've heard here that the drivers on HP scanners aren't so great for scanning pencil work. You may want to check their site though as they run a lot of sales and you might get a printer you'd be happy with.

For $250 you should be able to get some very usable gear. Check around the review sites. Most people here seem to prefer Epson and Canon.

I like my Pixma multifunction but get one with individual color cartridges.

get one with individual color cartridges.

Seconded. You can get some really decent cheap printers, but usually if you run out of one of the red / yellow / blue inks, you have to replace all three colours because they're all in one cartridge, and those cartridges are bloody expensive, sometimes costing about the same price as the printer itself.

Get one with individual colour cartridges and you can save a lot of money in the long run.
