Well $85.00 is getting a little better but still needs to be cheaper. Probably $40 at most.

By the way does any one know if the info in this book is the same as the 1950s "Famous Artists Course" Rockwell helped do? If so I already own that.

I always try and check the sale items at libraries. And garage sales and estate sales and flee markets and used book stores etc etc:)

Abe Books is a good place to look to get an idea of prices. They have 9 at the moment ranging from $100 to $150 so I doubt you'll get anything for $40.

From the publisher's note (1983 paperback edition):
When Norman Rockwell was a the height of his career in the late 1940's, he wrote a delightful book called How I make A Picture. It was the basis for an advanced illustration course at the Famous Artists School, but was never made available to the general public. We are delighted now to have this unique opportunity to make Rockwell's original book available for the first time in an expanded version, containing full-color reproductions of the artist's best work along with previously unpublished color sketches.
So, yes.

Thanks Elwell that will save me some money. Because as I have the original 1950 course. I picked it up cheap at an estate sale.

Is this the one where Rockwell describes his design process on the picture of the Grandmother pouring tea for the little girl? What other pix are analyzed?
Is this different than all the stuff in Norman Rockwell: Illustrator?
Thanks

There's some repetition, simply because it's Rockwell talking about his process, but the actual material is all different. There's a ton of "behind the scenes" stuff: lots of preliminary sketches and drawings, reference photos, info on finding and directing models, etc. Basically, it's exactly what the title says. emily g posted some scans in the Using Photo Reference Correctly (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=123346) sticky.

Hate to tell you (gloat - gloat), but I got mine in the UK for £7.95 about 25 years ago. Only paperback though if that's any consolation.
Fabulously inspiring, but then I was always a nut about his stuff. I have a book with all his Saturday Evening Post covers in it as well as four or five books. You're reminding me that I haven't had a good dribble over them for a couple of years now and I'm about due.
