Hey CA peeps! So I've been painting these heads for the past two years over at the NEXT GEN ATELIER...and I figure as a shameless plug for my upcoming head painting download, and in honor of CA portrait and composition month, I'd post some of them in here, to encourage you to do some yourself and post your paintings too!

***quick edit insert by Jason Manley: See the below post by me or click here to find out more about this months portrait activiteeeez http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2318098&postcount=3 ***

Head painting from observation is one of the most challenging things an artist can tackle. I have learned so much from painting people. I'ts helped me not just in my career but also in being able to say what I want with my art. You literally never stop learning new tricks when drawing people from observation.

So take part, see what you can do, and post them here. They can be whatever media you like , and as much as i can find the time. For those supporting the community with downloads--you will get dibs on crits and input. I'll be happy to answer questions and give some pointers along the way. So that said, let me kick it off with this dump of heads some self portraits and various other studies, all from life. I've posted a lot of these before, but I figured it appropriate to stick them in here as a way to kick off the next month of art making. Best of luck in all your portrait painting endeavors!

Holy moly man! Coro that is the most portraits I have ever seen dumped in one day. Ever.

It's on!!! International Portrait and Composition Month starts now!!! Fingers crossed and maybe we can get Andrew Jones going again on that which he built his fine art career on. Android? You in?

Any media. Any styles. NEW WORKS ONLY!! Self portraits, people portraits, hell...even pet portraits (as long as a person is in them!!). Faces faces faces faces heads heads heads heads. The head painting here on CA is going to get better. It is an area we can all improve in and with a good push I think we can see the artwork improve across the site. Please take your time and do a good job. This will not be a race but a nose down, face deep, exercise in outward expression of the inner soul, anatomy, surface, brushwork (or lack thereof), and media.

Since it is portrait month, those who pick up coro's upcoming download will have a shot at getting crits here too! Both Coro and I will be around to offer crits and input for those who are posting their work (those supporting the community will get dibs by picking up Coro's download and help us all have this place to share)....I do not have a whole ton of time but I have enough to help quite a few this month. I am working on something too...fingers crossed I will have enough time to finish it. Gotta try though. However, everyone here is encouraged to crit and help others with constructive, well thought, input and ideas. This will be a very active thread. No doubt we will all learn some things by August 1st. Want to learn with us?

Time to get started!!

Possible assignments:

1. Self portrait
2. Portrait of a member of the opposite sex
3. Portrait of a family member
4. Portrait of a person you are in love with
5. Portrait of a person who you wish was in love with you! :)
6. Portrait study from the great masters
7. Abstract portrait which communicates your inner self.
8. Editorial portrait of a public figure
9. Editorial portrait of a celebrity
10. Portrait from imagination (any)
11. Portraits of strangers (coffee shop, airport, or anywhere else)
12. Portraits of strippers! Some of you are old enough and are up for adventure. Go for it.
13. Portrait of the elderly (go draw at the old folks home! I used to do that when I was a kid and they love it and the place will say yes I'd think!)
14. Portrait of a child
15. Double portrait
16. Portrait of yourself as the opposite sex
17. Portrait of a famous artist.
18. Portrait of someone sleeping.
19. Portrait of someone who is of a race other than your own.
20. Portrait of a homeless person. (in honor off Mr. el coro himself!)

See you!!!

I second that Android notion.

I'm definitely going to have to try and do some stuff for this. My portraits right now are nothing special, which gives me all the more reason to work on some. :)

I should do this. It can't be that hard... and I need something to break away from what I'm struggling with now. Could be a great learning experience too. I'm going to make a mental note to try assignment number 5 sometime this month.

Those both look really nice. On the first one though, the faces look too much like you applied a cut out filter to them (I'm not saying you did, it just leaves that kind of impression). Maybe go for something a bit more dynamic and organic next time you try that style, even if it's not precisely accurate.

Also, I don't know if you've already experimented with color on that second one, but a few well placed colored strokes could really make it pop.

Hey all. I'm a complete beginner (I did my first SP May '09) and my beginners scratches probably shouldn't be here in this thread but I want to collect the karma of at least trying and participating. I really want crits. In two months my drawings have improved only because of the kind advice Ive received on this site. I love CA.

This is a self portrait.

Huzzah! I finally made time to do this... I wasn't going anywhere with what I was doing before. I said in my previous post that I was going to do Jason's assignment number 5 but I ended up painting myself:

708609

Notes: I have shaved eyebrows that are growing back... Sorry if this makes your eyes bleed. I have a birthmark on the right side - THAT'S NOT A MOLE. kthx. Someone actually mistook it for that once. It's also how people recognize me.
This was based off me looking into a tiny compact mirror taped to one of my speakers. It's not totally accurate since my chair was irritating my back, my desk is wobbly... The mirror slid down twice, etc. My mom recognized me instantly without me saying anything, which is a good sign because the last time I attempted something like this she didn't recognize me at all. o_o

Truly awe-inspiring work, mr.Coro! Consider my jaw dropped.

Same for the other work in here, great work everyone! :yayca: I hope to jump in too! Been too long since I attempted a proper SP, or decent portrait work at all in fact.

But I wonder, since there's only about a week left of June, if said Portrait Month won't extend into July? I need to know my timeframe :D

You know other people have been posting portraits in this thread besides coro. I bet they'd like some comments as well.

hence >_>
Samuel: Really powerful composition, and I love how you rendered the eyes. I think you could make it even stronger if you added more depth in value to the clothing though. The contrast is there, just needs the shading to make it look like it's coming out of the background.
Liz: You captured that pose really well, probably would have taken me the 2.5 hours just to nail it. :| It'd be cool to see the hair rendered out a bit more. :)

this was done for an upcoming dog show. reference images where taken of my girl friends uncles dog by her younger brother for me since I'm all the way up in Canada at the moment and they are back home in Jamaica. 50 pictures taken but only the 3 best hand picked by her and sent to me. It's done in a very industrial design manner of me sketched out on newsprint copy over to my bienfang marker pad and rendered in prisma marker and pencil, using a more water colour approach to rendering. Wish I had taken a better picture of it but to late now since my pieces should already be on display in the show. Gonna start a self portrait of me right now and post that later.

oh yeah almost forgot get this his registered name is mafia bolt (as in Usaine Bolt the Jamaican runner that broke and set all the records in last years (2008) Olympics.)

comments and crits more than welcome. 2nd time using markers to illustrate an animal.

ok here is my first portrait of the day, decided to go or a little attempt at some chiaruscuro red CarbOthello and white nupastel on steel gray pastel paper. Doing Self portrait from life is allot more challenging than I remember. looking in the mirror and back on the paper I feel very Narcissistic.

Read this thread and got inspired. Also managed to get my oldest son to sit (somewhat) still for twenty minutes, which is a herculean task in itself..

Didn't have good lighting here though, so he had to hold a candlelight, thats why the lighting is so gloomy.

Ps, tablet and strong nerves...

edit: yeah so...it is a 20 minute portrait. but please let me know what I did wrong and where I should keep my focus on improving. Unfortunately I took no photo of this sitting, I was painting directly from life, which was also one of the first times I did so in a long while..

@Studio: Was there a light behind him in the distance (the eclipse-looking halo) or were you just defining where his hair was?

@Studio: Was there a light behind him in the distance (the eclipse-looking halo) or were you just defining where his hair was?

Yes, there was a dark curtain in front of the window right behind him, but the light from outside came and hit his hair and his shirt. the light spots on the neck are me trying to compensate so one can see the outline though.

i'm focusing on this way of simplifying shapes rather than the full renderings..
first row is 3 different attempts from scratch..i have the book on a side but i dont have a clue on how to measure this way. I think the third one is the closest..

bottom row was slightly less tricky, more of a progression of the same..

This is the first portrait I did just after watching Coro's new video "Alla Prima".
I spent 3,5 hours in one session using Painter X and since I don't have the possibility for a live class I used a picture taken from the internet as reference. I let you guess the name of the model (little hint: she's the main actress of Transformer movie :))

If someone from MB will spend a little time to do a critics on this one I'll be very happy!

This is great! I definitely need to work on faces...they're harder to make up from your head than the rest of the body. I wonder why...

Question: Do these all need to be from life? I don't know a lot of people, and I don't have a whole lot of time because of work. Is it okay for this thread if most of the portraits are from the huge library of pictures I've taken of random people on the streets of downtown Austin? The rest would be self-portraits, my husband (if I can get him to sit still), and a couple other family members.

Holy crap, what a thread! I'm about as tongue tied as messr Coros avatar.

Theres some amazing stuff goin on in these, really really fluent use of a brush, im struggling to understand how some of them can seem to be so loose and yet everything hangs correctly together, I'm thinking there has been many an hour doing tonals before this kind of color handling was ever possible?... dont think ill every truly understand. guess the download would be a good place to start. hmm 'nuff said.

Thanks to m'b for the thread and to imagine fx where I learned more about the following stuff

Here's my latest attempt, still got the same problem areas, structure, neck, eyes, modeling, but I learned alot with this one about saturation moving towards highlights as well as some pshop stuff like stacking median filters and blending modes on lowered opacity.

OK, OK, I know. It has to be new stuff, but I will allow myself to break the rules this time, as I would like to present this particular painting. I hope I will be forgiven :-)
It is a portrait of my boyfriend made with oil paint on masonite (20x20 cm.)
This painting is one of the 50 paintings that have been chosen among more than 500 contributions from all over the Nordic countries to participate in a prestigious portrait competition held at Frederiksborg Castle, which is the place of the national portrait collection.
Needless to say, I am happy about this, so please allow me to brag a bit :-)

Honestly, my first comment about the portraits posted so far is that 9 out of 10 of the artists working have a glaring weakness in the understanding of form and structure. Mike Biereks download covers such things. Really...foundations are so key. The effort in doing these are completely admirable though.

I will tackle a couple of these shortly...but right now there are a lot of scrawling noisy marks happening in many of the portraits that do not apply to the lighting, or to the form and structure. Every single mark you make should be handled with form and structure in mind as well as inner soul. If the planes are facing the light source then give them light...not dark...if they are away from the light then put them in transition or shadow depending on where they are placed on the forms. Until these basic foundations are more heavily focused on growth will be patient...so please, the next set of portraits, pay attention to your foundations!!!!

Dunno what's on that download (although I just bought it so I guess I'll find out in a few minutes), but I can guarantee you're not going to learn everything you need to know from a 60 minute video. What people really need to be doing is hitting the books and doing studies. Not to say don't buy the download, I just did and I'm sure it will be helpful... just remember to keep the studies going!

EDIT: damn, halfway through the Biereks vid, and I have to say... Jason's right, buy this thing!

hey i think you did a great job on it
i really like what you did with the beard
those small lines adds something..

i think if you do more strong hard lines like that in some more
places in the hair.., maybe on the face to

experiment with it

wow some really good stuff going on in here!

`ej: check your drawing. i feel like theres a misalignment between the nose and the mouth. also, if you are painitng with acrylics, id mess around with lightly drybrushing with a short hair brush to get more subtle forms. acrylics seem to lend themselves better for this than for the alla prima approach ive found.

Yngling: these are all really good man! you have a great eye. on that last one id be tempted to dial down your shadow side slightly, and dont be afraid to mix it up and use different brushes to get different edges. you could get more convincing hair, as well as more intesting shapes on your forms by breaking it up and not using the round for everything. that said, i think all of yours that youve posted have been real nice. keep it up!

jigje: im tempted to think theres more top of your head than that. its a comon thing to want to focus more on the face, and give the top of the head less real estate, but be sure to measure! the eyes usually land on the halfway point on the head, but if factor in hair, it can sometimes be even lower.

addichim: i think you should think about accuracy. i feel you idealize your forms too much. look look and measure. once you put it down, measure it against what you see vs. what you've put in the drawing. be critical!

Kfeeras: that pencil is a little heavy handed. instead of shading it in, spend that time getting the shapes and proportions correct. i liek the lighting on the gouache study! cool colors. id try using a larger brush to help turn the bigger foms.

DanielC: looks pretty idealized. you have your work cut out for you since you see so clearly from your head. its almost harder for someone who can pre visualize to learn how to draw observaionally. but trust me, if you get good at it, it only helps push your minds eye higher by giving you increased accuracy and understanding, as well as plenty of new tricks. dont make shit up. look. its easy to make it up. its hard to learn how to really see. take the time, and measure. glad you posted in here daniel!

Ted: looks pretty good man! the shadow line under the chin feels a little harsh though. while i dont know what the model looked like, that transition is usually a bit softer.

Saurus: bigger! be more confident. get in there and make strong marks. and think about how you compose the stuff on the page. even for studies it matters. no reason not to work theose compositional muscles too.

The Pariano: feels a little flat. one reason is that your nose is at an angle, but theres still too much of the far side of your face showing. if your head is turned, even slightly, the far side of the face is forshortened. your cheeks are the same width in your painting, which is working to flatten it out. measure measure measure. its hardest to get those big forms correct sometimes since the brain wants to focus on details. squint!

Liffey: mike's video will teach you EVERYTHING you need to know :P

k ill try to do some more later!

great work guys!

so i just started a portrait class and this will be the first time I've painted traditionally in years (how fortuitous my portrait class begins the same time as portrait month!) Closely studying Bridgeman, Hogarth and currently reading Richard Schmid's 'Alla Prima', here is what I have completed so far!

I also recently watched the female portrait tutorial and will hopefully be getting my hands on the coro tutorial as well!

This is an in progress 6 hour pose. I am 3 hours in and I feel like this is the best start I've had with a traditional painting! I am having a little trouble with the values though but I'm excited to finish it. Throughout the class, we will be having models with varying complexions.

I'm using acrylic on gessoed board.

All feedback will be greatly appreciated!

So I took photo ref for this yesterday, just for this thread! I worked on this yesterday, and my intention was to do a really tight portrait. But then I looked at it today and don't care to refine it to the level I wanted, haha... So "sketch", it is. Ideally, it would've been nice to do one in front of a mirror, but I have no place with mirror, lighting, and comfort, working in harmony.

Did this as a warmup today. Its supposed to be Petitemistress.

Tried a completely different approaced on this, so its all sorts of wonky. But it was fun to paint from a low-rez webcam picture with all sorts of color artifacts and stuff.

lots of really interesting work in here, so i thought i'd join in

while i was at it i thought i'd venture out of my comfort zone (photoshop and undo) and go back to purely traditional pencil sketching.

yo folks, great to see everybodys efforts!
Heres mine for today, a 3hr detail study of William Orpens Man Of the West, aka, Sean keating, his student. I dont think I've captired the earnest intensity in this guys eyes but the resemblance is there I think.
3 hours is how long he took to the do the whole painting, what a bastard.
One rough oil brush at 100% opacity, trying to make tones sit one on top of the other up to the highlight, Aint gettin it yet but heh..next.

It's been close to a year since I've painted in workshop. I haven't really had the time, nor was i inspired since by day all I deal with is black and white storyboards and directing 3D animation.
But, I'm always on the search for new things to learn. I've got about 10 of the tutorials/dvd/downloads. I've always been a fan of Coro's work...in particular his illustrations and figurative stuff...so I figured I'd add his Alla Prima to my collection.

After 3.5 hours of work this past Sunday at LAAFA, here's what I came up with:

http://www.hiphopolis.net/alla_prima_071309.jpg

I'd appreciate any critiques and comments from Coro as well as the board.

Just when you find the time and inspiration to get after it, you get other stuff to distract you! Here's a start on my series of celeb portraits I've been meaning to do... this thread was just the push I needed to start.

I wanted to get a few more cranked out before posting but here's my latest contribution. Photo reference used, about 3-4 hours each, depending on how close I nail it in the first pass. I always come back to look with a fresh eye and find things I need to fix.

You guys think these are too tight? Seems like my loose stuff is better but I wanted to try some more finished pieces.

I've been doing pencil studies in Corel Painter...finally got the hang of the pencil tool so it actually looks like a pencil instead of the "pencil" in Photoshop. Here is the latest. This is my grandfather in his prime taken from an old photo. He's been a cowboy in Wyoming, cavalry sergeant in WWI, and settled down eventually to be a railroad engineer. The man (as my dad would say) chewed nails and spit rust.

Hi!! I so wanted to show how I'm doing with a traditional medium, and a portrait. I did this self-portrait today. I used a long mirror! There was some sharp direct light above me and more diffused light everywhere else. Mom said I didn't quite do my eyes justice (awww, how sweet), and I was sitting at a weird angle... Ah well, I did improve greatly from the first one I've done. :D

I painted myself on oil paint..i used a canvas support built on a chassis
(sorry for eventual grammatical mistakes..i'm Italian! lol)
the measures are 30cmx40cm (11.8x15,7 inches)..
the subject is a little bit strange and also the colours used (i thnk however it's impressive and offbeat, that's why i like it!!).

Man, Coro is right. Painting the human portrait from life is one of the most difficult thing to master. If you can paint someone accurately in terms of proportion, color and value from life under a short time limit, then i bow down to you!!!

I love painting portraits. Have been painting in oils for six months now but i've only started doing portraits a couple of months ago. Here are some that i did at the academy summer workshops. They are two hour long paintings on 12x16 canvas.
