I like that they've found an unknown karate kid to play aang, I just hope they stay true to the quirky, extreme death-dance like action style of the series, and don't go too jet li/ close in shots of body parts flailing so it kind of looks like they're doing something, which is usually how it turns out.

Given his casting choices, meh. I can't say I'm horribly excited for this one. I love the show and whatnot, but it seems like they're heading down the winding path that leads to Failsville: population... the rest of his recent movies.

They only recently replaced Jesse McCartney with Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire for Zukko (http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/02/dev-patel-repla.html), and they have Jackson Rathbone (had to look him up when I first read it, one of the dudes from Twilight) as Sokka. They might make it work, but right now it's looking pretty grim.

Yeah, the Happening was pretty sad. Not a bad concept, but just not well done. This might be exactly what he needs though. Get away from his big concept movies, and just get back to story telling. *fingers crossed*

Meh, I'm not overly impressed by the trailer. Usually I'm a fan of reworking old "goofy" cartoons into something a little more serious, but I think that what makes Avatar work is that it actually IS pretty serious for a kids show, but it has a lot of light hearted goofyness in Aang. The whole point of the story is Aangs maturing and growing from a kid to a man. That trailer looks a little TOO serious. But at the same time, I think it WILL be pretty darned cool to see some of the Avatar locations and environments rendered in a realistic style.

I'll probably go see it just because it was such a great show and maybe they'll throw in an interesting tidbit here and there, but honestly...I don't think this movie needs to be done. The show said all there was to say, and took its time to say it. Compressing the power of that journey down from 4+ seasons into one 2 hour movie is going to lose a lot of its force, imho.

Actually, there were only 3 original seasons. And this film is retelling the 1st season only, and then they intend to do two more films for the other two seasons. So it's not that crammed. But obviously they'll still have to do quite a bit of cutting, that's inevitable. And since Mike and Bryan, the original creators, are watching the production closely, I'm hoping they'll keep this away from Failville. At least I'm going to reserve any negative thoughts until I see the actual film!

Of course you do realise that what you saw is not going to be in the movie. This "clip" was made only for advertising the movie. I'v seen this done way too many times and most of the time the movie dosen't live up to the hype of the adds.

They put a lot of work into the original series, and I'd love to see something on the big screen, live action, that's faithful to the spirit of the show. Like I said, I don't really know that it NEEDS to be done...the cartoon was pretty darned awesome and didn't have a lot of shortcomings that I think need a live action film to resolve...but I'll still definitely see it just to see the adaptations take on the story.

Ditto on that. They should have aimed for a trilogy instead. A lot of movies were ruined by trying to squeeze epic stories into 2 hours...remember Dune? I'll go see it when it comes out but I don't expect it to hold a candle to the original series.

I was rather put off by the initial casting news, but I've calmed down over it (still annoyed and disappointed, but it's out of my hands). Really, I'm just hoping for a good film and performances. It's by Shyamalan, but it's not a completely original film written by him, so I'm hoping he isn't able to mess it up. It is still going to be hard to compress a season's worth of story in without cutting out the less consequential things.

Overall, I'm saying I'm cautious. Neither hopeful nor condemning the film, I'll wait until we get closer, get some reviews, and maybe after I've seen it. I'm leaving it at that.

I dunno I don't like anything about this so far, which breaks my heart because I love the series so much. I'm not the kind of person who can't handle differences in adaptations, but the differences in this are just all in the wrong places. And I think the fact that the original creators are "very involved" in the process but haven't said anything in support of the casting is very telling. Because the only reason to not come out and say they approve of the casting is if they didn't. "If you don't have anything nice to say..."

In the cartoon series, the people looked like a mixture of asians and dark-haired caucasians. But it is not earth, so there are no asians or whites there.

Well, nearly all wars in the past have been based on nationality and race, and the original series is no different...the Fire nation were culturally and racial distinct from other nations, and they were bent on genocide. I think it makes sense.

I agree, I thought the original series were pretty perfect on their own, this live-action certainly isn't needed. But then again, when are films ever needed? I think that as along as this will remain truthful and keep it well done, it could be a fun new exploration of the universe they created. I too hope Mike and Bryan's part will remain big and influential during the project! I must admit that the choice of director is still sort of baffling to me, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. His screenplays have been rather...inconsistant, to say the least!

I don't think they were ever really funny. It's more a comment on how the directer is a one trick pony, and he is so stuck in his ways, you're bound to expect a major 'twist' even if it makes no sense.
