Hey everyone long time listener, first time caller. Although I gave this thread a glance before, I became really interested (inspired if you will) when I read the blurb. It really made me think twice about my work and the direction I'd like it to head! Sooooo, here's how I relate to the topic.

Newborn - Everyday is a chance for you to bring something into the world, no matter where you're at in life, young or old. As an individual it is difficult to know what you contribute, your talent and one becomes doubtful of their abilities. To take that chance and go into the unknown sounds easy, but is something else altogether. It takes courage and the ability to overcome the fear of failure. Newborn is to reinvent ones self. Lose the baggage of all inner squabbles and the attempt to break free.

Ahem. Anyway here's a sketch of my idea using the deep sea as a metaphor and a girl, unsure of the present but longing for the future.

Comments will be much appreciated thanks!

I think your idea is great, and something we can all relate to :) --how do you plan to show her longing for the future? I'm assuming there will probably be more details worked into the composition as you go along, so look forward to progress :)

Thanks Hala, that's a really good point. I was thinking with my scheme I could get a more emptional response for the future. I've just played with 2 value structures, one a mid and the other low key. I'm tending towards the low key so the darkness and future concepts pops abit more. Anyhoo, any comments would be great thanks!

Really nice initial drawing - are you using the little mermaid story as a basis?

I like the more contrasty one more - but I don't have a good sense of tonal balance, so maybe ignore that!

Good start - looking forward to seeing where you take it.

Thanks so much for your comments guys. After looking into it, with a lone figure it was hard to relay what I wanted to say so I added a little sister character to further enhance a feeling of taking the next step. Still in it's sketching phases I suppose- i just want to get the drawing and composition right. thanks!!

I'm so glad someone is doing a mermaid. It's something I thought about but I'm better with ugly things than beautiful so it needs someone like you to make a good job of it. Looks like you're off to a great start too. Keep it going, NoriRoll.
