View Full Version : Sid's Newborn Planet - Final!

Here's the final along with 2 closeups. Story is that a bunch of people got their planet blown up and they've been refugees for a long time. They're just arriving at their new world, which is still under construction :).

If I had the time, I would have made the ships a bit less jagged and angular, and added some wear and tear.

I think it looks wrong, because the planet is as good as finished already so we dont see much of building up.
I remember the pictures from the construction of the second death star.

How would they construct it ? Just piling up a lot of earth, sand and rocks from somewhere else ? Or more like a construction ? With metal-skeletons or such things ? Or maybe pre-constructed parts ?

Well...Maybe making that planet look like a womb. And unborn child in it. Just thinking!

Anyway, looking good already))

Liking the concept but your angle seems odd for this concept, it looks they are arriving some where with rage. needs more construction feel to it. G L

You could do an asteroid field with one of the asteroids being terraformed, like swathes of greenery and oceans etc. spreading across its surface. The other asteroids would be references for what it was like before so you know its being created and not destroyed.

I like that last concept compositional-wise but there's not enough focus on the planet and if you hadn't explained it I wouldn't know what was happening.

Bear in mind you don't need to include the whole asteroid / planet for us to know what it is. A section of planet could be just as effective, or even more so because there'd be more detail.

i like the angle of the last one very much, but i agree the planet needs to be nearer.

How's this?

Wow, i think that the update focus on the planet better. Was wondering if it will look even better if the planet is HUGE. Like you can only see a little more than a quarter of the planet from that view.

Whatever it is, there's still so much improvement from the first post. Keep it going dude!

That's no moon...

Good work. :)

Dont know how I missed your thread - great work! Love the scale and epic atmosphere you are creating. I think the last version is the strongest in terms of compostion and the viewing position is much improved. I think, as others have said, that showing just a limb of the planet and increasing its size still further would be more dramatic and make for a more interetsting composition - it would also make more space for other background elements. The complementary colour shceme is also very nice.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone! It's much appreciated, and making the planet bigger made this wayyy more awesome than I imagined. I did try going bigger, but I kind of like it the way it is, so... forward!

Here's the first WIP shot.

Nice green / orange colour contrast. Not too keen on the starry light. Good job, keep it up.

Do you still want to bring in the spaceships or such things in the foreground ? Or something else this time ?

The planet looks really sweet so far. I am looking forward for all the details.

Baron Impossible: Thanks man! Hehe, no worries, the stars are gonna be significantly covered up, still several layers of nebula to add on top.

Vaejoun: Glad you like! The spaceships and all will still be there, will much more detail than in the concepts. Just trying to get a chunk of the background in first.

I spent a lot of time on the planet today, mainly the interior and some of the lighting, so here's a closeup. The rest of the picture didn't get much love today.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've hardly had any time to work on this because of school. This is just a quick design sketch for a character in the main image.

Love the idea and the epic scale Sidharth. The green works for me too. Nice painterly feel also. Keep it going. I look forward to seeing it progress.

Nickillus and animosapien, thanks for the comments and support!

Here's an update, like I said, progress on it has been ridiculously slow. I've made some changes to the final concept, since I didn't like how it was turning out.

Very cool piece, love the idea. Can't wait to see it completed!

i love the view from the inside of the ship, seeing the refugees looking on as the planet is created really explains a lot. maybe you could have some of those machines from your first post on the left side of the planet (our left that is) sucking in gass. very nice work

Thanks miycko! I'm gonna try to bring those machines back in, I just need to figure out how to make it look like they aren't breaking the planet.

Here's an update. I'm starting to get worried about finishing this on time. School work's not getting any lighter :P.

Not sure which of these I want to go with. I kind of wish I'd worked out the values before heading into color, 'cause I'm having a hard time keeping my focal points organized without making the people invisible.

Problem solved :P. I've taken an ass-backwards route with tons of extra work just to arrive at the original concept.

So... really didn't like where my painting was going and should've figured that if I was struggling with it for over 2 weeks, it was probably no good. I'm using the same image, but I've reworked the composition a little.

And with 4 days left, this will be my concept. Unless I revise it again. I've got a great track record of sticking with my ideas so far.

You know, man, a LOT of these directions were looking great at the point you abandoned them, in my opinion.

I don't know you well enough to say for sure, but seems like it's time for you to charge ahead with what you have rather than hunting for some unknown something you haven't come across yet. Both in terms of making a piece, and just good for you as an artist/creator.

Jeson, thanks for the advice and the ego boost! I'm charging ahead with the last concept I posted, at this point in the contest I can't really spend any more time tinkering anyway :P. Here's a work in progress shot in black and white. Gonna add a color overlay next, and then do another color pass to finish. Hopefully should be done in the next 2 days.

Dropped a color layer on it, will do more tomorrow. How does the planet look? I'm trying to use the advice from the online color theory class and put other colors of the same value in with the greens.

No offense, but some of the WIPs actually came out better than the final.
