Teen sues for tattoo gone wrong
June 17: A Belgian teenager says she fell asleep in a tattoo parlor and woke up with 56 stars on her face, rather than the three she had asked for.

updated 4:46 a.m. ET June 17, 2009
BRUSSELS - A Belgian teenager has told police how she emerged from a tattoo parlor with 56 stars over one side of her face, rather than the three she had asked for, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

"I said this part, the top, is ok, but not the rest," Kimberley Vlaeminck from the city of Kortrijk, 56 miles northwest of Brussels, told Belgian broadcaster VRT.

The 18-year-old said she fell asleep during the procedure, and woke up in pain when her nose was being tattooed.

A spokesman for Kortrijk prosecutors' office said police were investigating after a complaint from the teenager.

The tattoo artist said Vlaeminck had agreed to 56 stars.

"She agreed, but when her father saw it, the trouble started," Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws quoted the man as saying.

Vlaeminck said she wanted to keep the tattoos on her forehead but would have the rest removed.

Personally I found it funny, don't know how many of you do tatoos, but this is why you should never fall asleep in a tatoo artits's chair.

I'm not inked yet, but there's something about this that I can't figure out. Isn't it so that when you get inked it's the skin-on-bone that hurts the most, and the meaty parts the least? I'm just curious.. how can you fall asleep when someone is thrusting needles with ink into your face with a machine that isn't silent? Also, if three small stars is what she requested, then those stars shouldve been made in a jiffy, so how fast does this woman fall asleep for the artist to make 56 of the buggers? I don't get it.

I'm inclined to believe the tattooist in this matter.. I mean, if you fall asleep while getting tattooed in the face, you're obviously not sober. (not that i've ever gotten ink done in my face, but i assume its painful as shit.) And she claims there was a language barrier.. If the tattooist shows up in court being sufficiently fluid in the languages they allegedly communicated in he's gonna walk out of there without any problems - i think.

But then again, maybe she's telling the truth..

I don't know about the girl but the tattoos on the artist is amazing. I can barely see his face!

Slash, I'm gonna have to agree with you.

How could you fall asleep while a guy's tatooing 56 stars onto your face?

And she only complained after her father saw it?

Teohyc: I know dude, he's completely covered! And with those piercings and stuff...

Even if she HAD requested 56 stars, the placement on those looks like crap.

I doubt there will be any question of her sobriety (if that is indeed why she fell asleep), because that right there would be a reason for any self respecting tattoo artist to deny service.

Hell, if I was a tattoo artist with that request I'd make her go home and think about it before allowing her to go on with it. Best would probably be to mark her face with pen, and let her live it a few days before deciding to move forward. No matter who is at fault, they are both idiots.

...what...the...hell...is....THAT???

IS THAT A MAN UNDERNEATH THAT???

I mean, skill, but too much. Also, a slip of 53 stars is pretty amazing.

It's flat out impossible to go to sleep when having a tattoo. I've got a lot of tatts and the ones near the bone are killers. A few times I struggled to keep myself from wincing when I got inked on my lower forearms, near the wrist. The face must be agony. No amount of alchohol would numb the pain. She's a liar and it's baffling how she convinced anybody to take her case.

Especially on the nose and temples, theres skin, then bone there, hurts like fuck, and you CAN'T fall asleep.

If she asked for stars by her eye, wouldn't she notice something is wrong when she feels needles on her chin? Is it possible to sleep through being stuck with little needles over and over without the help of heavy drugs or alcohol? Deffo BS... Shame on her for trying to defame the tattoo artist like that, too... lots of people get tattoos they regret, no need to take it out on someone else. I will say I give points to the tattooist, he has offered to pay 1/2 the cost of the removal.

It's doubtfull she fell asleep but she said she probably passed out. Also the needle penetration was far too deep instead of the normal 3mm.
Anyway a good tattoo artist should have declined getting someones face destroyed at age 18.

If it had penetrated 2cm she'd be dead because it would have breached the skull, not to mention injected directly into several veins.

I get the feeling both were on drugs.
I mean, ok the tattooist has them all over his face too, but I think even he would ask twice if she really wanted twinkle stars all over the half of her face...
Its not like he'd be doing stars over faces every day, or is that the latest fad?

I think the girl lied, I will use the following reasons to explain why
1) can YOU fall asleep when having a needle poke your face thousands of times?
2) You have to be comfortable to go to sleep. I'm assuming it's the girls first tattoo, maybe it's just me but I'd think that someone getting their first tattoo (or any for that matter) would be a combination of nervous and excited- adrenaline pumping + high heart rate = no sleep
3) Tattoo artists won't tattoo people who are drunk. Period. There are lots of stereotypes about someone who got drunk and got this and that tattooed and while there certainly are some people who will tattoo anything, professionals tend to choose who and what they tattoo carefully. After all it is their work being represented, not to mention the possibility for lawsuits. Bottom line, if someone walks into a tattoo parlor drunk, they will flat out refuse
4) Even IF there was a language barrier, I think that there would be some clarification between 3 and 56. If you were a tattoo artist and you thought that someone said they wanted 56 stars tattooed on them, wouldn't you stop and make sure that they actually said 56? I mean it's a large number, especially for a tattoo on their face, it seems like it would be only natural to say "56? are you sure?". And if you were telling someone you wanted 3 stars tattooed on you and there was a language barrier, wouldn't you just hold up 3 fingers?
5) She's 18. My guess is now that she can legally get tattooed she decided to go all out so to speak.
6) The complaint was issued AFTER negative feedback from her friends and family. My guess is before she got it she thought everyone would like it, she probably didn't tell anyone because getting your face tattooed is the type of thing friends and family try to talk you out of and just figured she'd prove to them how good it'd look, and when everyone thought it was stupid, she felt stupid and decided to make excuses, one of those "oh uh..No! I'm not THAT stupid, I didn't want this tattoo..I..uh...only wanted 3...It's the tattoo artists fault!"

On the video they said she only complained now after hearing the reactions of her family and friends to the tattoo, if she didn't want all those stars she would immediately press charges after seeing the finished tattoo.

Sumthin' ain't right here. And I suspect its the chick. Why would any tattoo artist hose his own business by doing something he didn't think she wanted? Most tattoo folks get repeat business in one form or another so it behooves him to have a happy customer. Obviously he did something he thought was right and she's bitching about it afterwards.

I think she's just trying to slam this poor dude on her bad judgement.

there are some rumors that its a consipracy and all just fake of putting up some advertising. arguments as 'the stars look to thick or swollen up to be inked' - 'the face should be red of all the blood' sound quite strong. and also the girl itself works for a advertising company.I actually live in the town where it happend, nobody has seen her. But we had some great laughs about it :p

Unfortunatly it's no hoax - we were expecting it was a prank by a radio station but no such thing was announced during her interview at the station.
The interviewer also said - If it only were a prank, unfortunatly it's not.
Now she's working at another tattoo studio as a tattoo advisor.

I hope she gets out of the media.

Hehe this is funny, first she admits she lied, the tattooist is already offering her removal at reduced costs. And now she's filing a preliminary injunction against the tattooist, she didn't even give the guy a pardon when he asked for it.
Can't wait untill the sensationalist media get over this bullshit story...

The tattoo art form is still something of a renegade art form. It has been fun reading all of the speculation.
A tattoo artist will NOT work on an unconscious customer. Fact. The artist in question has been in the industry for quite some time and if this customer had ceased to be conscious, I am sure the work would have ceased as well. No tattoo artist will last for long if he/she does not hold his conduct with the customer to a much higher level of respectability than society requires. The pictures of the girl, reveals whelts along the tattoo lines. Anyone who has a tattoo knows that this is the result of the needle entering the skin. Those are real tattoos and certainly not henna which leaves no marks whatsoever.
Sorry to dispel an urban myth, but yes a tattoo artist will work on a drunk customer. The artist does not want to, but if he/she rejects each customer with the smell of booze on his breath, well, he will have no customers. Especially first time tattoo customers since they are almost always scared and never fail to avail themselves of a little liquid courage, to help the process along. Some people act fine while they are blitzed and it is sometimes hard to discern which customers are hammered. The tattoo artist will use his best judgment to avoid these cases, but short of a DUI test, this is the best he can do. The designation of whether someone is drunk is an arbitrary one at best.
In the tattoo artist’s slow season, you can bet your ass that slightly drunk customers are getting tattoos.
This girl more than likely, ignored all of his professional advice.
She asked for something in very poor taste and she probably told the artist in painful, ad nauseam detail, where each of those stars should be placed.
She thought she was a rebel, but she could not back up the decision.
So she manages to damage the artist’s reputation and gains a great deal of media attention in the process. I suppose it will suffice for a time as a substitute for her lack of self-esteem.

They continue to show the tattoo artists face like look at what he did to himself he took his extreme behavier and took it on someone else. I dont think that is the case. I think they are just using the way he looks as an excuse against him. Like, look at him. he must have done it type of thing.

Im guessing it was so painful she passed out, not fell asleep. then later her parents flipped.

I'm pretty heavily tattooed and every tattoo I've ever gotten which is mostly custom work, the artist has used a thermofax transfer or drawn the work to be done on me with a sharpie. For a thermofax he puts it through the copy machine for the right size, then runs the copy through the thermofax with this special sheet of transfer paper and viola, the tattoo can then be transferred onto my skin. With a sharpie its more freeform and he can really match the tattoo to the contours of my skin and get good placement so the thing doesn't look like hell. Either method, which I'm pretty certain most if not all self respecting tattoo artists use, after they are done transferring or drawing, they say, "Go ahead and look at that in the mirror and tell me what you think."

So now I pose the question, How the hell did she not know she was getting that many stars on her face, I'm pretty confident in the practices of the tattoo artist that he drew them on or transferred on those stars and then said, "take a look and see if thats ok that I'm going to tattoo half your face with stars." or something to that effect.
