Hay welcome to CA, those SB pages are a great start just keep at it and pay attention to what your doing proportion wise and make sure your committing to memory exactly what your taking in, every thing will fall in place with practice so have fun with it.

Welcome! :) What would you like to draw better? It's easier to offer advice if we know your goals. Book studies might help. Are you familiar with Loomis and other anatomy masters yet?

thanks for all the advice, yes I am familiar with some of those guys I think I may have made a mistake by trying to study from Burne Hogarth first, maybe I need to focus of Loomis to start with.

Nice SB!
If you want to study anatomy, I'd suggest to study Bammes.
The anatomy in that book is realistic and detailed, it's made for artists.

These are two Burne Hogarth studies iv'e just done now could anyone tell me how to actually study anatomy? is there any method? or is just developed by constant studies?

This is an Andrew Lewis study tell me what you think thanks.

I take it you mean Andrew Loomis? I have one of his books. They are very good. If you are looking for methods to study anatomy then there are lots of good books with instructions. Generally though I think you are right when you said it develops by constant study, provided that the studies one is doing are correct and thorough. There are no real shortcuts.
Looking at your drawings I would say that you are definitely on the right track.

Great stuff! Your lines are nice and tight, and you've got your own style going. Just brilliant.
One thing I want to point out is watch out for some of your figures sliding off to one side, be aware of the centre of gravity in standing figures.

Thanks for pointing that out Euphemism I will try to watch out for this when I do figure drawing. These next pieces are from a recent college project in which I tried to portray an exaggeration of a queue. Its actually on a 30ft strip of paper.

I really enjoy your mixed media pieces. Especially the 3rd one in post #12 with all the interesting textures, and the super cool 30 ft project.
As far as studying anatomy, I believe starting from the skeleton out would be most beneficial. Think of the rib cage as an oval, the tibia/fibula/radius/ulna as curved lines, the hip bone as a box etc. while focusing on how they link together (ball/socket vs. hinge, etc.) and their proportions. Then study the muscles and how they interact with each other/bones.
And then when you want to draw the figure, all you have to do is: 1) find where the skeleton is located by recognizing where the joints are 2) connect the joints and 3) lay the muscle masses on top.
At least that's how I do it haha. Hope that helps.

Thanks Yihyoungli I'm really glad you like some of the more experimental pieces because those are the ones that I feel most unsure about. I will definitely try to use the figure drawing method you spoke about.

Hey jonny t. I hope Im never behind you in a long queue (post #12, image 12). I really liked the 30ft spread (queues again) and your moleskin is so interesting. Thanks man, I look forward to more. You are a little bit strange but thats a good thing. :)

Damn! this is great :D especially your nose-bleed monster :P. And it's not just the lose work you're doing either, the traditional life drawings you just posted are looking really strong. It'd be really great to see one of those life drawings attacked with the same expression you have in your personal work and sketches; it'd be beautiful. Anyway, keep it up :)

I really like some of these! Very experimental. But that's a good thing!
I'd love to see some really finished work, if you have any. Like a painting or something?

July 17th, 2010, 08:08 AM
Thanks Mose, Iv'e actually been trying to do a really finished piece recently but one of my problems is that the longer I spend on a piece the worst it gets. It seems to lose it's energy. I'll see what I can do.

These two are both 30 minute life drawings. I struggled a bit with both poses and therefore some parts are off. I screwed up on positioning the figure on the paper aswell, also sorry about the image quality.
