View Full Version : IDW #102: Vacuum Cleaner
June 19th, 2009, 07:05 AM
Topic: Vacuum Cleaner
Background: A very straightforward topic for this week, with no strings attached. Just design and draw a vacuum cleaner, a rather standard piece of household equipment with certain automotive aspects to it that should make it fun ;)
1. Design and draw vacuum cleaner!
2. That's it... now draw!
Deadline: Friday, June 26
June 19th, 2009, 07:55 AM
Does it have to be an indoor vaccume cleaner?
June 19th, 2009, 08:42 AM
Rabies: Well if you stick to a household vacuum cleaner outdoors could be okay too (though I don't see the real use of such a thing..) but I'm not talking about industrialised vacuum cleaners to suck whole square miles clean.

Hey everyone, sounds like a nice topic to get back into the swing of things on :)
Looking forward to see everyone's entries.

Thats just what i wanted to know - thanks :)

Some ideas. Nothing particularly original. It's exam time here so I'm not sure if I'll finish anything, but we'll see.

I am new to this weekly challenge, but it seems really interesting. Here's my initial sketch
June 20th, 2009, 02:53 PM
on the left, a rough sketch just to get an idea down. on the right, a more elaborated concept but my pen died in the middle so its all shaky.
hopefully i can finish because i also have exams :(
(this is some sort of futuristic vacuum)

Tyrus - hehe, I like the vacuum shoes. I do that sometimes to dry the floor. What if the bag/collection part wasn't on the back? Then you wouldn't have to run hoses from one part to another. You could just have a pair of big-ass, self-propelling robo-vacuum boots. Kind of like a zamboni with a big toe. A lot of people who can afford expensive new vacuums may be older and have bad backs or just not want to carry them on their back.
June 21st, 2009, 01:30 AM
1st go at the vacuum, pretty generic....need to explore more interesting shapes. I referenced home vacuums and car engines.

Looks heavy duty, like it could pick up some serious garbage. Maybe it could be marketed to college students.

Im going for one of those vacuum robots. Might not be so efficient, but i guess it doesnt have to be :D

hey guys can't wait to get started on this subject, really awesome :)
Rabies: Hey man cool design, I dunno but as it will be in mass production and to look at home, in the home maybe it would be good to make it more aesthetically appealing for the masses.
Pixie Trick: Cool idea really like it, not a revolution but the thought behind it is brilliant more chance of succeeding in the real world :)
JoshK: Looks sweet, dunno whether you were going with it but looks as though it was created from spare parts after an apocalypse, very nice design so jealous of your ability.
mauser: Like the design, looks as though this could be dangerous if you accidentally ran over the cat :)
Tyrus: Maybe not for everybody, but hell if i could skate and hoover the floor i would totally buy your design.
June 23rd, 2009, 09:39 PM
Ok guys I can't sleep, so I've been searching through pictures to get ideas and compiled it into a big picture in hope it may help others :)
sorry for the size, hope its not to big.
June 24th, 2009, 11:14 AM
Im graduating from "high school"(I wont bother trying to explain the danish education system, im 16 if it makes any difference) in less than an hour, so ill possibly spend tommorow on having hangover (thats right we can legally buy alc when were 16 :D) so heres where iwe gotte so far.

Bagg: Ya, I have issues with coming up with anything that looks overly great, but I love to invent things that I think could possibly work. Thanks for the pic(s) too.
I know I've said this before, but I just love how everyone can come up with such different designs for the same thing! It's part of why I really like IDW.
So, now mine looks like a flaming beetle.... Lame title too. :P Meh. I made some pretty nice brushes in the process tho. Crits.... pls....
June 25th, 2009, 01:43 AM
My first participation!
June 25th, 2009, 05:05 AM
Hey guys these designs are looking great :)
I really need to push ahead with mine, I'm a tad lazy!
Rabies: hey man, I'm liking the design but I think at the moment it is lacking in the wow factor, maybe a beauty shot of the vacuum to top it off.
Pixie Trick: cool design, maybe some sort of description or orthographic views to fill up the empty space on the right.
E.J.Su: really liking the final design, great layout out and great colors :), just wandering if you used Corel painter for it or were markers also used ?

E.J.Su: really liking the final design, great layout out and great colors :), just wandering if you used Corel painter for it or were markers also used ?Everything was done from scratch in Alias Sketchbook Pro. :)

Yoitisi: I just realized that today is the last day I'll have internet access for a while, so I was wondering if the finals thread would be up today?
As close to final as I'm going to get.
June 25th, 2009, 04:07 PM
Thanks for the comments all, sadly i havent got the time, the energy and the patience to do anything else than what was necessary to get my idea out. So no action shot this time :(
Besides my head is filled with graduation and memories from 10 years of school, so i present to you: SAM-22

I'm starting to worry that you might not think this qualifies.
See, I've been working on this (see the WIP). I'm actually even farther along now-- almost done with the ink rendering.
See, this is an outdoor vacuum cleaner that is powered by remote control. Technically someone could use this for their yard, or any other outdoor terrain. I hope that is OK...
June 25th, 2009, 11:36 PM
Here's the inked version. I was initially planning to color it with watercolor but I think I'll try going the digital route... or perhaps I'll do a hybrid of both.

Well yoitisi said:

So i guess outdoors is fine, as long as its still VACUUME based

Hey, Almost didn't make it...
Great Entries so far! JoshK, Rabies, Pixie Trick and E.J.Su are rocking. Zirngibism, i'm looking forward to seeing yours, far out idea and something I would personally purchase, if to just keep my mum quiet about 'cleaning' the garden... Nice drawing man!
My Entry is the Kuuki, (Japanese for Air.. I think). Tried to create a light weight battery powered upright hoover. Something with both Articulated head and powered combs, so you can get all those annoying nooks and crannies in your house. :teeth:
June 27th, 2009, 03:42 AM
Ok, here's my entry. Trying to think a bit out of the box on the concept.
I call it "RuggedVac".
It's an outdoor vacuum cleaner for people who own large yards (the kinds of people who would be able and willing to spend the money for it in the first place). It uses powerful suction to pick up all loose organic debris in lawns. It could have different modes, like "fall leaf" mode, or "stray mulch" mode.
All the debris it picks up passes through an elementary grinder that's there just to get the bits to fit in the bag better, as well as to keep anything from getting stuck.
Hope the labeling on the work explains the rest.
Drawn in loose free-hand perspective, rendered with micron pen, finished in PS.

Ugh my apologies once again for putting up the Finals thread so late. Had a crazy week and am only now relaxing a little from it. I think I'm going to try and make this thing a little more regular much like ChOW is run, should make it easier on both me and you guys.
Like last time, one day extra on this round.
Pixie Trick: Don't worry, I'll put it in the finals thread for you :)
June 28th, 2009, 04:01 AM
There's a couple more hours to go on this round, please make sure you've posted your final entries in the Finals thread before I close it!
June 28th, 2009, 04:38 PM
K time to close this round I suppose. Poll will be up in a minute, but the new round is already up so no reason to be bored :)
