Colours and mixing the paint is my problem

hey, im an... ok artist, and im quite use to painting and i find it quite easy to get the results i expect from paints in the real world, but im finding it extremely hard to convert to digital painting. Im use to painting where the colours mix on the page and i can ajust the opacity with the thickness of the paint, but i find this hard to do with a computer. The problem i think i have is, i dont know how to control the brushes and how to mix the colours properly, i find it a little confusing when i press harder i have less opaque lines :S.... and nearly every brush i use is the same, apart from a few things...... Any help? because i really am confused how people on here manage to produce such brilliant results with painter, it doesnt like me very much....

Alot of the Artists here customize the brushes to their preferences. Play around with the configs on the brushes and test them out, Its fun and easy! :D
Do you use a blending brush when you paint in painter? I cant go without mine.
