I'm having difficulties replacing colors. I want to turn all of the black on one picture red, and I upped the contrast completely so it is only black and white so i can change the black to one color and the white to another. Im usnig photoshop elements 5.0 and im just messing around with it trying to learn how to use this tool (so im not making any important piece with it or anything).

Anyways, when I use the replace color tool, I use the eyedropper to click on the black and then i choose the replace color as red, but instead of changing it to red, it converts it to grey with a very faint red hue. I actually just got it to somewhat work by moving the saturation, lightness, and hue meters manually rather than just selecting a color; its confusing and frustrating, since the little block that shows the replacement color is the exact same in both scenarios, but it only worked when i moved the meters manually.

HOWEVER, it still did not convert all of the black in the picture. There are still some small areas where the color was still converted to the grey color, and I can't change the hue of these at all. I used the eyedropper tool on this grey color and adjusting the hue and saturation meters does nothing to the replacement color. Adjusting lightness is the only thing that effects the replacement color, so i can only change this color to different shades of black and white. Why can't i convert this grey to red? Honestly, i could just use the bucket tool, but I want to know how to use the replace color tool. I don't really understand it doesnt just convert the color i select to the replacement color i select. So any help is much appreciated.

EDIT: I just tried to convert the remaining white in the picture to yellow with no avail. Again, I can only change the lightness and make it black and white... Why can't I just make it yllow? the picture isn't black and white format!!! AUUGHHH

Try using layer blend modes to do this. Should be especially easy if its straight black and white. Just make a new layer, paint some red on it, and the try some of the layer blend modes out - in particular in this case I think lighten or screen.

read the comments for a Photoshop-specific improvement on the method.
