Some seriously sweet pieces in here... Thought I'd throw down on Seshat/Seshet, the Goddess of Mathematics and Language. Being a math/lang geek, I find her highly apropriate. This is still in pencil, still rough and not quite finished. I have yet to finish her costume and add in the Seshat-specific details. At the moment, all she reads as is generic egyptian royalty/goddess...
I'm envisioning the grey areas underneath her tunic/dress as armor. Will be metallic, of course. Since she's creditted with bringing the written language to Egypt (along with Thoth), I want that reaching arm to be doing something.... language-y. Writing, most likely, since that's what she's often depicted doing. Will also be adding in some fractals to her attire and for her six/seven-pointed star symbol.
Crits? Suggestions? THanks all!!

Tavarilyn: The first thing I notice is how straight her torso is. Where are this gal's hips? Second, I would look into sketching out the entire figure (hands, feet, and all), before moving into the details. I like the collar design.
gtgauvin: He looks like he's falling over backwards, but I'm assuming that's deliberate? Also watch the relative length of his arms, unless one is supposed to be forshortened. Cool armor!
MJ_Alcazar: I might make both feet flat on the ground. If the right leg becomes too long, cheat and put it on a rock :)
dwinbotp: Awesome head on this one!
ImaGEEnation: I like the armor design, but it's really hard to tell what's going on below chest-height. Is there any way you could clean up that area and separate out the forms?
CKLamb: Awesome character sheet! I love the head designs, and it looks like the body designs are coming along great.
xgabo: Sweet. For whatever reason, it strikes me as slightly Native American?
Asahi-SD-: Looking good! It's got a deco feel, which is great. (Art Deco was heavily influenced by Egyptian architecture, as I'm sure you know) I like the canopic jar/tube a lot.
Kerberos: I like that Osiris head a lot.
Marsch: I would consider lengthening the legs, for a start. You also might want to try treating the forms on the body with harder edges, like you've done on his headdress. The soft edges look rather muddy.
MarkDN: Love the pilot guy. Are you going to crop in like that or show the full statue? You might loose your pilot if you go for the full figure.
Tommoy: Looks fishlike to me. Cool.
sony: Very "ancient astronaut". I like the design a lot - the sparkles, not so much. Why does he have a sealed space suit and bare hands?
CamSyko: His head seems potentially small, and watch the relative angles of his feet.
Sulk-Sal: Didn't see yours before - this could be very interesting!
rinjii: I'd go with the robot. Her torso seems slightly thick compared to her legs, but maybe that's just me.
Novbert: I'd go with gold lighting and a blue or green sea.
DynamiteDill: Sexy. I dunno if the boots quite fit.
luness: I really love these helmet designs.

Or is it 1 figure per picture (with smaller figures in background)?

lkjhgfdsa- I think you're good to go, they've had concept sheet finals before so I think it's up to you. I'm really glad you did a little more dynamic coloring, it was getting confused with all the detail and green monochrome color scheme. Well done.
Phaethon- I think the move to the legs was a good one, the pose has much more personality.

Am looking forward to smirt's, tommoy's, xgabo's, dwinbotp's. troubadour's. Felecia's is just awesome.
Asahi-sd yes i can see what you mean, i'll se where i take it.
So, further working... like i said i wanted to avoid stargate/nikopol. i also didn't want the designs to be sledgehammer references to the original, i wanted more of a feeling of:' yeah i can see how their spacesuits were interpreted that way by the egyptians'....
ubfortunately i seem to be going a bit too far... my mother pointed out that the first one looks more burmese than egyptian.
RE; materials, i'm going for a crystaline feel to the suits, glass with organic curves.

buffichar; Thanks :)
Asahi-SD-; thanks, i wanted it to be more pure non rusty so, may be that's y the colors values are less contrasty, but i think i should adjust some levels. I liked the way you used the sun or some other solar planet light. cool
MarkDN; Nice studies. Like it. yeah these this get alive i totally got that.
Marsch; Good start, as the CHOW is to improve your skills and black n white, drawing are accepted so i would suggest you to focus on your design in some CHOWs then jump to colors and stuff. It seems you get tuck to work on design because of colors and finish this. Good luck.Work on the proportions first.
Kerberos; I don't know what style you are working with but eyes seems bit anime and body proportion are less stylized according to this style. waiting for update. G-DL.
Missile; kind of like it but you need to work on material definition; it seems rubber to me every thing.
Carnifex; looking forward to your final. :) GL
xgabo; nice spy stuff:)
ImaGGenation; Thanks mate!
dwinbotp; whu hu.
Mock; looking forward to it.
MJ_Alcazar; some some shape an design heads seems big to me. but good job! cheers
gtgauvin; he's gonna fall i know its a top shot but you need fix the balance.
tavarilyn; She seems very stiff. add some twist in pose.
Felicia; thanks
Phaethon;thanks, he is wearing gloves, made of very fine stuff.
lkjhgfdsa; very cool.
harris; seems cool but i think thats bit big according to body proportions.

Felicia: Thanks for the advice - I see what you mean. I've noticed that if a picture gets to poll it needs to be more vertical to keep a decent size as they're all put to the same horizontal width, so I'll probably try to make the image a little taller rather than wider. Maybe add more to Osiris' helmet... as for his pose, I think it shows I'm less comfortable drawing men there haha. He is essentially a walking corpse though so he should be quite rigid, maybe I need to work that into the image more. Yours is looking swell, loving the colours and the whole design of it! Only thing I can suggest is to add a little more to the ankh as it's looking a bit flat at the moment for a necklace.
Harris-ejaz: I like the eyes on the first two designs, alien but not to a silly extent. The outline of the armour is good. About the colour - solid black doesn't seem to appear very much in ancient artwork of the gods, if you are looking to get it to have a bit more of an 'Egyptian' appearance then working in a little bit of colour like red, blue, green, or gold could help it a lot. Of course it is all down to how you see the topic so if you like it black then go with it!
Dwinbotp: That's looking great. Interesting design and the armour looks very realistic.
ImaGEEnation: Thanks. :) Some details are going to get sacrificed because of it but it feels like getting out of my comfort zone a bit more to focus on two figures at once. Yours is looking cool - I think it could benefit from some darker shadows to bring out the armour in a more 3D way, or some more solid lines because it's a little difficult to see where the arm is in relation to the torso at the moment. Love the bow and arrow.
Asahi-SD-: Thank you for the suggestion, I've worked in more parts since - hieroglyphic tattoos, etc, hopefully they'll bring that Egyptian style more into it. Yours is looking cool. I can't really think of anything useful or constructive to say about it... just keep up the good work. The heart in the case is a nice touch.
gtgauvin
June 20th, 2009, 05:52 AM
sony and Phaethon: If he looks like he's tipping over, it's because I'm going to try a tilted camera angle. If it doesn't work, I'll just rotate and touch it up.

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/5747/133993809tp.jpg
Missle The colour thing is a risk i'm taking... the idea is, have the armour glasslike, but the highlights be tinted gold or green on different parts of the Glass.
Also i'm doing the heh and hautet pair, a.d i plan to have heh be white to contrast with hautet's black... lets's see though

luness: Very cool sketches and ideas going on there. I love the asymmetry.
Adi.: Awesome sketch! Cant wait to see it finished.
my WIP: I'm trying to depict Ra as a parasitic insectoid alien. It latches on to a human and can somewhat take control of the nervous system (motor control is not that great though). I tried to convey a shambing/clumsy walk. Hopefully, the shape of the parasite on top of the donor human head mimics Egyptian masks to a degree. Still a lot of work to be done on this, but I think i can make it by the deadline.

No Shot: The anatomy of his chest is bit off, as with his arms, mostly just in scale relations to each other. Good start.
harris: I think they are both looking a little *too* far from egyptian mythos... maybe think this way - the Egyptians would have based some of their own fashions off the aliens, so maybe neck-pieces resemble the beaded eyptian necklaces? Etc. Just in order to tie in the images a little bit. Because if we viewed them as they are now, we'd have no reference back to where the brief stems from, and instead think of robot/cyborg warriors. (however, they are looking pretty awesome as robot warriors so far...)
Hideyoshi: Looking real good so far. You gonna keep working on it? It still reads a little rough. I like the eyeline light and the pole arm... I think the upper arm on the left is a little short, or the shoulder guard is working against the forshortening.
adi: looking pretty interesting so far, like to see where you take this.
lkjhgfdsa: Doing a turnaround is perfectly okay. This is character design after all! I'm liking it so far, but I think it's a bit too busy with too many sharp, hard edges. Maybe soften up some of the edges to narrow the focus a little more specifically?
Troubadour: Nice sketch so far, I like where the head is going. Show us moooore.
Tavarilyn: I think you can push the design on this one. Right now she's reading very actual egyptian god and not really lending any idea to her interstellar origin.

MarkDN - That looks really cool, but watch the perspective on his left wing, it looks off
Phaethon - Love the headdress, but the shadow under her chin with the highlight looks a bit harsh
dwinbotp - thats pretty sweet, dude looks like he's gonna whoop someone.
Felicia - that thing is disgusting (in a very good way) I can't wait to see it finished.
jpedro - I'm loving the design, can't wait to see her developed more.
Asahi-SD- - thanks for the feedback, yours is looking good, I just find myself looking for a bit more blue in the piece.
sony - It's looking good but be careful how his forehead sits in that helmet.
Sorry to those I didn't get. As for mine: Thanks to those who commented. I widened her hips, but I think I need to lighten or take away some of the jewels in her skin. Any crits would be greatly appreciated.

Update on mine before cleanup. With the static pose I figured a back view should help.
Sulk-Sal - It may be the background or the colors in general but it's hard to read as is. More contrast on her armor, skin, and more color may help.
MarkDN - Looking awesome, you might want to widen the canvas a bit though, that wing is pushing the border, and emphasize the little guy in the orb.
Jpedro - She's a little too stiff starting from the second sketch, almost like she's arching her back and raising the mirror.

Hideyoshi looks like another badass cyborg freak, love it!
Sulk-Sal, I love watching you grow as an artist and you're improving, just keep at it:) I would probably lessen the red dots/jewels and make just a few better rendered jewels and place them at key areas ie head, chest, torso etc. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the comments from everyone, going to post more soon, sorta have to post and go atm.
This will probably what my final will look like. I've resized the followers/worshippers, making the envoys giants. and added backup singers Anubis and Ra albeit faded:D

Razorleaf - Her fingers look a little short, and you might want to reposition her leg just a bit. Her back leg forms a bit of a tangent and while I can tell she's steping out of this hole in space/time she made, moving her front leg so we can see a bit of her back leg in the hole would make it much clearer. Otherwise looks good so far.
Reymus - Looking good! Love that he's peering out of his helm.
dwinbotp - what is there to say? DANG!
CKLamb - Can't wait to see it further developed.
Also, dwinbotp I have to thank you for such kind words. Right now I'm kicking myself for not joining ChoW sooner. Hopefully soon I can grow enough to make a living at this :p

So, I kind of got sick of working on the one I was doing, and went back and started from scratch. There were too many weird things going on with the lighting on the edges of things. And her pose was not sassy enough.
Here's how far I got on the old one, and the new one in progress.
Reymus
June 21st, 2009, 12:17 AM
Sulk-Sal - I don't know if it's too late now, or if you were going to do it, but since you really have 2 "layers" of shade really, it'll help a lot to further define and solidify forms by adding a third layer, maybe highlights (since you have shadows and midtones already). Not on the whole piece but her skin and hair.
Phaeton - The second one is already better, her head in the first was too wide, though the second is starting to have the same problem, but her pose from the first is already more lively, the choker and headdress in the first seemed fine though :).

I decided to try a stab at Osiris. My biggest concern right now is rendering those (barely touched) pyramids and making his signature headdress merge more with his skull, but both should resolve themselves with more work after a good night's rest.

Daestwen: I was actually going for something very techy but i get what you (and others) are saying... i've reigned in my designs a bit accordingly. it's a fine line to walk, to not be too obvious with the sourve material...
At the same time i recognise that my designs were going a bit too much into the cyberpunk (like tsutomu nehei's blame)... trying to shift directions now.
I like your mocap goddess btw :p
Quikenobi another centre of gravity issue. all you need to do is to fix the posture... it couldn't stand the way it's drawn now.keep the legs bent the way they are now but rotate them about the hip, clockwise.
otherwise nice.
Tommoy that's brilliant. I especially like the glenn gabry-esque paint finish.

test on anubis, field biologist and first aid technician.
the khemetar are actually from some water world,so they need walk support (gonna work on a more techy look) and gasmasks to counteract the very dry oxygen. since osiris is the communications/translations guy,he's out most often, with a special wetsuit, which doesn't prevent him from eventially succumbing to the sun and falling apart, upon which anubis has each part encased in special boxes to be put together and re-animated back on the ship. since seth is the first one to find osiris, people assume he's murdered him,and we get that absurd legend.

MarkDN, cool design, it screams egypt and pharao, if you wanted to make this a little more feminine, then i'd recheck the hips and transition to the back, this looks very strong and masculine atm, then again, maybe you intended this.
Missile, i like the flags with the Eye on there, i think we're a bit far away in general maybe, which is probably a result of having two characters plus a bit of BG. i'd personally prefer to have the focus just on her and have the indication of the pyramid in the BG, just next to the righthand side flag. just a suggestion though ;) hope you can finish!
Tommoy, really like the visor/hlelmet, and cool pose. nice one!
Sulk Sal, good call on the gems, much less is more.
Reymus, i think the red hand there would look more natural if it was holding that staff with the fingers as well.
thanks for your crit, made me reevaluate a number of things, i think this pose and the redesigned head, and getting rid of the "mirror" works better.
dwinbotp, looks great, really reminds me of immortal. love the armor and the design of the head, well done!
daestwen, i think on her right hand we'd see a bit of the index finger from that angle.

Djinn: Looking slick! One final thing I'd suggest if you haven't taken it to the finals yet is to make the tubing on the right of the mask a little thicker (ie, a little more height to it) as it goes over the shoulder. It kind of trails off currently.
Jpedro: Thanks, you've pretty much voiced what I've been thinking the last couple of days - I'm putting in a lot of detail but it isn't visible because the figures are distant. I'm dropping Osiris and putting more focus on Isis now. :) Yours is looking good, the ears make it slightly cute but the picture keeps a serious tone to it. Good luck with finishing it.

Reymus: Thanks - I trimmed the edge of her head a little. I got rid of the first headdress and collar designs mostly so I wouldn't make the same lighting errors.
xgabo: Looks great!
Carnifex: Cool idea and nice painting! Maybe make his aquatic origins and the function of the leg supports and mask more obvious?
harris-ejaz: You've been producing some awesome images - I'd pick one to render further and abandon the god. The goddess is strong enough as a design to stand alone.
Slaving_maniac: I'd re-scan this. The mid values are too washed out and the dark values are too dark in contrast.
CKLamb: Looks good! I'd make sure that green light is more evenly distributed - it's a bit selective about which edges it lights up. Don't wash the face out with it, though. Leave those edges.
Djinn: The color is okay. If you want to bring the figure forward in the BW version, just knock down the background contrast and bring in more of a mid-tone near the white figure edges.

Gonna be about a three hour delay on the poll, folks! So the deadline is now 8 instead of 5.
Hope this means there are a few more entries. :]

posted final in final thread...alas i had the right idea too late, because i actually wanted to show more khemetars. (and no,i don't feel like working on 'em any more, now that the contest is over)
harris ejaz - came out great! if you still feel like designing her odder half at some point,i'd suggest making him more upper-body-pronounced,to even out the looks. because she has a very pronounced lower body with those wings,so it'd make sense to have him vice versa.
razorleaf - oh,i just thought you wanted to present it entirely as your own. people tend to jump to these conclusions rather fast,so you might wanna add that it's referenced.

That's exactly what i was thinking just before abandonment... i didn't want to take the obvious route of enlarging the shoulder pads.

Harris-ejaz, I'm no heavyweight but I could think up some minor suggestions, The perspective of the two pointy things down below and the fact that the one nearby seems blurred, while the one further away is sharp. Her left foot seems a bit large and her left elbow seems a bit thin. I think the white triangle is distracting a bit and I can't define what it actually is. Not sure what those blocks on the ground are, why not make them triangles like pyramids. But actually this is all crap, its just a beautiful piece as it is.

Osiris, the head of waste management on the Envoy of Khemethar. He often padded his wallet by disposing of the evidence of other crew members' bloody disputes. Disfigured from his own unfortunate encounter with another crewmember, he came to be known the very personification of death to the Egyptians.
