Okay, here we go.

First off some Portrait studies.
You can clearly see the progress from crap to... not so crap
I was actually quite proud of the last page, they all turned out quite right.

And then some not so great poses from head and finally a thumbnail based on this weeks EOW comp.. nothing I wanted to finish however.

Comments and crits are welcomed, I'm off to drool on some more threads here~

Oh yeah! I forgot the painting I finished today :O
I saw that tree in a forest I usually take walks in and it was so macabre, looked all crooked and creepy.
I could picture it being used for hanging witches and such.

I just have 2 landscapes for your today.
My sketches are too ugly to be shown, complete block on what to draw.

I've been so intoxicated with the new hp2730p that my sketchbook looks so old and dusty and useless :P

I must get me one of those tablet pc's!

You should feel pleased with those portraits. They are very nice. Good expressions.

The full figure poses look decent to me. A bit cartoony. You captured well the look of him putting weight on his feet. Yet his legs look quite long on the first one.

Good environment paintings. Especially the first two.

Nice! Love the portraits but the landscape scenes are amazing.
Yeah those tablet PCs are something else... if only they were affordable!

Wonderful sketches! I instantly fell in love with those landscapes, especially the one with the forest spirits, Princess Mononoke, right?
Promise to keep it up!

Scanadensis - Thanks :D and yeah.. I need cash :S

Noukah - Ofc I'll continue :)

So uh.. just one painting this week.. I'm busy for once.
Strapping canvases to frames and planning and packing.

I got a warehouse job in England and I start 06/07!
Not much time there :)

Thanks for watching, your awesome :D

Your stuff is really good! Keep up the great work. These forums are awe-inspiring I know. Sometimes I come across stuff that just blows my mind. Nice colors and texture on your last landscape. Now jump in there and hit it with some detailed brushwork, in the cliffs and that tree in the foreground. : D Strong portraits, too. Is that you? : P

Aw man, I finally update and it's just some sketchbook pages =/

As some of you know, I've been in England for a month working at a lousy factory.. I hoped to get some cash but ended up earning about 70bucks After I had paid for everything. (Plane, train, accommodation etc)

I spent a week eating nothing but a few slices of dry bread because they didn't even pay me the first weeks. It was an experience.

OmertA - I can hope =) Thanks!

Timsalcove - Thanks =) Those 'textures' though are brushed in.
And not with a textured brush :P
There is ofc a slight grainy texture overlay over the whole thing.
The textures in the tree were made by randomly scribbling like a possessed person over that area with a tiny brush. I find it more fun and sometimes even quicker than going around looking for that special texture to overlay.

Izer - Thanks, glad you like them :)

JoshDartist - Man, I'm so sorry for not having updated.
I didn't have any internet while in england and about 1-2hours of free time everyday which I would use to go shopping or eating =/
On the weekends I did some drawings in my books.

I actually tried drawing on the street a few times but that wasn't very appreciated by the authorities, I made people nervous or disturbed the peace or something.. Same thing at the airport, I got really funny looks from security haha.

I tried drawing a girl I was hitting on in a store and 3managers kicked me out for harassment. My friend (whom you'll see in a jiff) laughed at me every time and called me the most unlucky person in the world.

For now only these two, but no sweat. I have two commissions I'm working on and will post process and finished piece of both of them when I'm done.

Thanks for your support =)

Alex, top left.
Old friend lower left.
Kristen Stewart, lower right. I have such a childish crush on this actress. :P

Man I've been soooo busy for I don't know how long ;_;
It's starting to loosen up though so I can FINALLY start drawing again..

Been following Mr.Delicious stream and I think it helped find time to actually draw something.

Today he spoke about the importance of color, I usually draw in grayscale and I figured I'd try my hand at color... I f**** suck, lol.

These are just studies to get me to A) find a technique I like B) learn wtf color is all about.
and C) practice practicing!

If I do find something I like I might blow it up though :o

Anyway, been shit busy for the past 2 days, haven't even been home. BUT I just finished these three! Felt good :D

SNOW!! First snow of the year! It's a whopping 3inches deep! That's a lot in Sweden! D:
We hardly ever see snow here.
I woke up at 1am tonight just in time to watch it begin, it's still falling! Awesome.

So I've been experimenting a bunch lately trying out different styles, I really like Thomas Scholes way of drawing environments and I've tried my hand at drawing cartoons for like, first time ever. I didn't like it but I'll show you anyway.
Oh lord how I hate folds...

So here I was feeling jolly good about my new Lifestudy which I had recorded as a present for all of you.

I thought,
I'll post the picture and the video all together!
Not knowing the time it would take to render..

I put my PC on its treadmill, thinking 'This is easy! now I've got time to kill!'
I put on my clothes and walked down my hill.

So I climbed the icy mountain and watched the sky burn,
And some immigrants shooting rockets at every turn.

One rocket touched my ear, and I was laughed at by everyone near.

I left the overgrown rock and went home.
Only to find the render was totally blown.

Now here I am, without a recording for all of you.
Feeling out of gear.
But anyway, happy New Year!

:D
Just a quick story of my new years :) That video is coming though.. just gotta learn how to do this stuff :D

Here's the video for the previous Lifestudy!

No sound, and no edits other than 400% speedup.
It took forEVER to render at half-hd(1280x720) And camtasia SUCKS at editing.. it kept crashing so I'll look into other applications if and when I do another video.

Loathsome - Thanks, you should. It's always good to be able to do both Characters and landscapes, put them together and you've got a full illustration~

If only there was a way to get boost your imagination 10fold in 24hours maybe I'd be able to come up with fun stuff to draw..
Enough to be able to pay my bills and eat full meals 3times a day.
Hard times are Hard.

anyway, 2hour life study. I was drawing while the sun was setting so by the time my sketch was done, all the colors and lighting had changed so I had to sort of wing it.

I really do feel a bit bad for only updating with so little today but it seems I have less and less time to draw everyday =/

I do draw in my sketchbook when I'm not at home but I don't have a scanner or Camera so I can't show you.

Sigh.. There should be like an Artist Help program that pay your rent so we don't have to waste time doing bullshit.

You use so many simply shapes and colors and they give really nice feeling to this sketches . Anatomy studies are great, stop complaining cuz You are going pretty well :D
You should give me some clues :P

Reedux
March 26th, 2010, 02:25 AM
samborek - thanks :) Some clues: Form. What you are drawing is not in 2D, you are trying to imitate 3D on a 2D surface, thus you should think like you are sculpting rather than drawing lines. When you understand form to a certain degree, the line feels irrelevant. You can draw anyway you want and still show the form.

So I decided to skip the blue jumping lady painting because after reworking it over and over, I figured out that it was flawed in every possible way.
I used it however to inspire my new sketch!

Your stuff is looking insanely good and it makes me feel like drawing. If your attitude were as good as your drawing skills, you'd go far, my friend.
If I have any advice for your drawing technique, I'd say the edges of some of your figures are a little too crisp, especially the ones in motion - blurring some of the edges may help the figures look less "tacked on". Hope that helps, sorry if it's annoying :P

(ps) you smell:harbl::asspat:

Pochifux - Oh yes, Edges. Probably the hardest but yet, most fun thing to practice and "master".
I think my attitude is an indirect correspondent to the people and events around me.
I feel much better when I'm on my own and not distracted/influenced by all the negative people around me.

Two landscapes.
One is a photostudy the other is from head. I think you can pretty obviously see which is what.

[B]Metal Fingers - thanks! :D I dunno why, but color just gets better without me even thinking about it. It's like the less I think about something the faster I get better at it D:
p.s Brain for sale, 10bucks.

jskotte - thanks :)

Ryanoir - heh, yeah. I think my studies are so far ahead of my personal drawings though.
I'm "studying" drawing my own stuff right now :) Trying to get some kind of imagination going.

My57 - It's just so hard to find fun stuff to draw D:

midknight523 - thank you good sir.

Joe777k7 - I don't know what to say. I think I lack in both tremendously compared to others around my level.
I don't draw nearly as much as I'd like and as for inspiration, I don't know.
Draw what you want to see, basically. And if people try to tell you to stop, block them.

I am motivated by who I want to be in the near future. And where I want to be.
Whenever I feel unmotivated I visualize myself being where I want to be.
And I make a wish at the same time, something like "I'll be there in 2months!"
Doesn't really matter if I make it or not in 2months, it just matters that I have a clear goal and empowers me.

Look at where you are now, and look at where you want to be in an immediate future, if you think it seems unrealistic, even better. I love having impossible goals, that makes it so much more worth it when you get there :)

Oh, and you can shove it in peoples faces if they doubted you or tried to make you give up ;) That's a big motivator.

But that doesn't change how lazy and bored I am sometimes.
You just gotta push through. Build discipline day by day, until it becomes a habbit to work hard.

So here are some drawings as of late, trying to do Chow's but I'm failing miserably.
And its amazing how long these things take. A study takes a few hours, but these ugly things take me days :( This just means I need to do more of them obviously.

shumizu - Thank you! I start with Color :)
Sometimes, I do a quick value check in black and white, that is, no shading at all just to fill in the lines with something solid. Helps me keep track of things.
Then add a color layer ontop to give those grays some color.
All shading and rendering is done in color.

yahdood - Why thank you Dood!
I'm hoping to get some time to do the Environment of the week also.
The topics usually suck though :(

A friend whipped me into finishing this drawing. Even though I didn't want to.
There's just too much wrong with it.

The composition is boring, the colors blend together, the gladiator has a shitty design and a static pose which makes it more boring. I could imagine him do more of a forward thrust.

Anyway, I learned a lot doing this drawing and it got me some good crits from people.
Thanks everyone.

Great sketchbook you have here. Lots of improvement since page 1. Your figure drawings are looking really good and your Wizard of Oz and Alice paintings are excellent.

About the latest painting; the composition is perhaps a little more interesting than the one before, but it lacks depth. The body of the worm in particular looks pretty flat. The sense of confrontation was better in the previous version, because opposing forces are more easily understood as such when they take up a half of the canvas each. Not to say you can't do it as you did. I think changing the viewpoint of your first version would be ideal: so that it's not a dead-on sideview, just enough sideview to suggest confrontation and with just enough depth to not look like a 2d fighting game ;) Hope that makes sense.

The lighting on the new painting flattens it a bit as well, I think. If the light came from the side, that might be better. Would allow for cast shadows. Also, showing some ground instead of just fog would help show depth.

Benjaminba - Thanks a lot man :) I get what you're saying, although I disagree on the first one being better in anyway :P
I've had two people comment on the lack of depth in the new one. Although I honestly didn't plan for it to have much depth (not an excuse, just poor judgement). During my thumbnail stage I was contemplating having anything other than the worm, smoke, dude in there. Sort of like an empty Dream area? But it was too boring and I added ground and what not as I went along.
And yeah, The flatness I can agree with though. :'( *works harder*
I should've looked up reference for backlit tubes. >_<

jamescutler - Inspired by Mononoke yes :) Thanks.

good studies !

I'd recommend doing some tonal painting studies of master works, and also from life. I find your tonal compositions are a bit soft overall and lack a solid shape/design. It looks like you use soft edged brush a lot which gives a rather vague lighting effect. I think doing some copies in just tone would help get used to being careful with your tones and how they link together through a picture.

Hope this makes sense

keep it up! :)

I've been extremely busy lately, sadly not with work.

In short, bills don't go paid when you're unemployed.

I've been having frequent meetings with Jobseekers and the social service (or whatever you call it in your country) in order to get enough benefits to pay my rent.

You wouldn't believe the amount of paper work that is needed.
And the amount of stress it puts on a person who already dislikes the flawed system even when it supposedly works.

Today I did the final big step and can finally relax for a few weeks I hope.
Bad things will keep happening, but if you keep fighting as stubbornly or perhaps stupidly as it might seem. You will reap the fortune.

I managed to squeeze in a birthday gift for a friend of mine :)

New 2hour study, did this one while I watched the movie on my second monitor :)

The purpose of this study was to try out some new principals I've thought up that I learned from my previous painting "Who is like God?"

I decided to stop after 2hours because I noticed that I was no longer thinking and just rendering, my goal had been reached.
Looking at it and going over the process in my head, I can also learn from the mistakes I made. For example, the background is far too muddy and saturated. And I spent too much time on details in their faces too early.

Totally agree with you, man! Girls look so good in winter fashions. That's one of the few nice things about living in Minnesota in the winter.

I've gone though this from page one, and I'm so impressed! Your figure sketches are great, and the females look really proportional (probably doubly-so because I'm used to seeing the insanely massive or terribly lopsided mammaries one often finds on DeviantArt). I'm trying to figure out ways to get better at my figure drawing, so I've really enjoyed your work. Do you draw the life sketches from your head, or do you always use reference photos?

Or do you just have a bunch of women prancing around your apartment? ;)

Reedux

cgaddict - thanks.
Justyna - no problem :)
Cozmo - Oh how I wish it was the latter :D, No I usually draw from photos when doing figures. I find most of my reference on DA stock accounts and Google. I've also lately been using this awesome site for gestures: http://pixelovely.com/tools/gesture.html

Those two in my previous post were from memory however. Quick 5-10minute sketches in my sketchbook. Regular ball point pen.

Nothing fancy today, more figures studies.
I've never really done gestures cause I didn't understand its application. "To draw quicker and get more motion in your figures", I mean. Sure. But it looks like crap and when you flesh out the gesture with muscles and fix the anatomy it'll look stiff anyway.

I read a book about it and all I could gather was use flowy lines and don't strive to be 100% correct but rather exaggerate some curves to give the sense of flow or something.

1-2min gestures and 20-30min figures.

Ccs - You think? :D Thanks.
am●na,☼nafa&Kash☉fa - I imagine you saying that while rubbing your hands together in a menacing way :|
Mr.Thorne, PeregrinTerk - Cheers :D

Sorry I've been gone for a bit. Haven't been drawing much outside of portrait commissions.
Been doing a lot of reading instead but I feel a bit recharged now :)

I've also noticed my eyesight has gotten worse or something? I find it really hard to focus my eyes when I draw lately.
It gets worse at night. I have to squint my eyes to see things in focus, it's proper weird. Time to get glasses? :(
It's only horizontally too, I can see vertical lines just fine. What's up with that?

Anyway, here's a wip I'm working on :> It needs more lightnings, don't you think? :D

Thanks Joe, bbq. Life is getting quite hectic indeed.
But I'll take it as a sign of finally getting my "Career" started.

I've implied hawk like forms in the menacing eyes as well.

I'm still unsure about both colour and the wings though.
