I'm especially curious for any of you who do a variance of 2d, 3d, and animation.
I'd really love to read how you set up your folders in order to make my inferior ways of organizing better.

Well, I'm afraid I don't do 3D nor animation, but I could easily implant it into my organization.
In my parent 'Art' folder, I have these head folders:
Drawings (scanned or PS sketches, .jpg),
Photoshop (the .psd files),
Finished (the .jpg or whatever format you finalise)
WIPs (screenshots of my progress, each piece within its own folder).
Also, within each of these, I organize the work by years. I have like 2001-2009.
As for the filenames themselves, I just name the sketches by their dates, i.e."11-5" and a,b,c in the back if I have many are from the same date.
So for you, you could have your parent Art folder into these 3 (2D, 3D, anim) and then again into similar folders like I described. Hope that helped somewhat!
I'd be interested to see what other systems people use, always good to improve the organization.

In "My art" folder I got year sub-folders like 2000-2004, 2005-2006, 2007-2008 and so on... Within these sub-folders I divide stuff into subject matter - characters, environments, props, studies.
Apart from year sub-folders I got some additional ones for scanned sketchbook doodles, textures or specific projects are better kept together rather than be scattered between different years.

Organize?
Not much anymore.

I have it set up by categories, but I think I'll reorganize them by year, seems like a much better solution.
