Hello there! My name is Josh, I'm an African American and I love comic books. As you can see I'm VERY new here, and I want to join this community because I see real progress with the people who post here, and I see the good tips you guys give out to us up and comers. That is what lead me to this place.

More recent stuff as you go down.

Welcome to ConceptArt. I like your detail work but what I think could really help you get those dynamic poses is breaking the body down into basic shapes. When you break it down into basic shapes it makes the form follow. Also reference, reference, reference! More, please. :)

Thanks for the tip friend! Here, for you, I tried several ways to draw the human body. I usually make the motion line and then sketch the proportions I know on the body, I usually do this because I cant find a good way to bend a shape around a shape, it just won't connect for me. Is there anyway to create form from more organic shapes that are more bendable?

Forgot to put up some later sketches I made this year. And from this point on I'll only show recent stuff. So I can show improvement.

hey man welcome to CA im pretty new here too :)

post more and lots of reference !

i like whats happening with post #3 but it is a very large image and hard to view as a whole one the screen = (

one way i find that really helps when creating gestures (or those organic lines you're talking about )
is to use larger paper and draw with your whole arm (not the wrist)

the lines gain way more energy it takes a little bit to get used to it but its pretty essential IMHO

thanks for posting keep it up !

Sorry I let my thread die, I'm actually running out of paper so I had to be careful, anyway, I'm drawing a Druid type character, and I'm not that great with locations around the character, but this will be a way to get my feet wet. Hope you like it.

Here is a sketch of a man getting kicked in the face, I drew this on sketch paper with a 4H wood pencil. I actually got inspiration from Ong-bak, staring Tony Jaa...name anyone on this site, and he can kick their ass. Enjoy

Well, theres certainly nothing wrong with your imagination!!, nice range of ideas going around here. I would love to see how this sketchbook would turn out with some dedicated study. A good place to start would be minute long gesture studies form posemaniacs.com, but bear in mind to do plenty of these, otherwise they wont help.
Keep up the good work!!

OH, how I LOVE this site, THANK YOU for the site my friend. Funny thing is I actually bought People and Poses: Comic Artist's photo reference by Buddy Scalera. It helped me a lot. But this site is just another golden drop in the bucket, thank you. Your sketchbook is beautiful also.

And I'le use this site no problem, if only there was a way to put regular photos in a format like this.

Not done yet, did this in the last 3 minutes.

You see what I'm doing here, I completed one of the Indian, planing on adding another behind the two front ones, and adding plants and nice stuff like that

IT IS DONE!

A lot of graphite, and no ink pens, AND no Art Pad/Photoshop means this is what you get, I believe the paper made a lot of the graphite slide around also.

Anyway, hope you get the message. And some tips on how I can better myself with graphite pencils would help...I mean...I have no idea.

I can see some definite improvement in here. Just keep hitting the books and taking your sketch books out to do life drawings... you'll be amazed at what you can do if you keep putting in the effort. :)

Seriously dude, it's nice to see your drawing all the time, but crack some bridgeman.

AzusaPesant
July 15th, 2009, 12:03 AM
Zaxer, you're going to have to tell me what bridgeman is, man. I looked it up and the closest thing to art I found was an art library. But hey if its anything that helps, I'm all game.

AzusaPesant
July 19th, 2009, 08:04 AM
Ah, sorry Zaxer, I know who Bridgeman is, I bought a recent Anatomy book, straight up anatomy, none of the cartoon stuff, recently, but it isn't by him. Its pretty good though. As you can see by these studies Ive been using the book, kinda thick headed of me.

I realized that to understand fully whats going on outside, I'm going to have to study whats on the inside also.

2 characters I doodled while in a bus during a field trip. I'm likening the necromancer, but I'm thinking his left arm is a bit to short.

Then I decided to draw the necromancer's robes, Here is what came up.

Random sketches, of the back side, I don't have an easy time with this area.

Early Loomis practice. The first few was from "Fun with a Pencil". A watered down version of "Drawing the head and hands". But both are helpful.

More sketches, faces and stuff of that nature.

AzusaPesant
September 11th, 2009, 07:38 PM
Sketches.

And clever thing I thought up for myself. I'm not a great learner by reading, so just reading Loomis books does not help me one bit.

So I made a worksheet of sorts, and made a lot of copies, and made sure that all divisions where the same, so I can practice on my human proportion. I have a lot more of these things drawn on, but I don't want to scan all of them. Plus getting pictures on here is harder then it needs to be.

Look, and be amazed!

I think you Anatomy-philes will like the shading I did in the eye and maybe one of the lips. I'm practicing that now.

Oh and I would like to point out my Barbarian/Cleric/Wizard princess *note the tiara*, imaginations run wild on school buses.

I felt these two where special, because they have to do with my high school, and its kinda like concept art for my Photo Teacher.

She gave me an objective: Draw the new mascot kicking the old one out of a door.

The creative Juices flowed and I made these two, and they are going to use one of these two on a banner, yippee!

And I'm caught up for now, phew, its like taking a good dump....run.

I think you should focus more in structure than in detail
I do like the one that is kicking a yopchagi (that's the name in korean I don't know if it's well spelled) you really got the feeling of movement in that one

DazDaryl
October 17th, 2009, 08:57 PM
i rekon you should use coloured pencils or texters, like comptic markers to break up your drawings a bit.

AzusaPesant
October 30th, 2009, 06:57 PM
Andress333: I am going to start doing studies on muscles a bit more, if that is what you mean by structure.

DazDaryl: Good idea, trying to do everything in Graphite makes the picture look, UGLY. Take a look at that Indian/Apache picture I made, the graphite got everywhere.

If you see a nice assortment of random heads, I did the first step of Ron Lemen's head tutorial.

I'm trying to dip into muscles, but I just need to find out some type of activity for myself, freelancing wherever I can get a picture just don't click for me.

One looks like that mustash dude he did, but with 1700's hair.

And I finally realized that I can shade things holding my pencil like im going to write. I have to hold it in some...weird way, hard to explain, but I think you get the picture.
