Don't ever use the airbrush to "shade" the image with a black color. Sure, it adds shadow, but it doesn't look remotely natural.

Good advice, I've made the same mistake, but what is the alternative? Shading in using other colors? There must be a thread around here somewhere that has tips on how its done.

Well, yeah, at least not with the airbrush, not unless it's very very subtle. Adding a very general, broad gradient using the airbrush doesn't look very pleasing, but you can get some very nice effects using subtle colors.
