Kerberos - My take is that a character is specific and a creature is general. For example: ants are a species/creature, but Flik (from "A Bug's Life") is a specific ant and therefore a character.

Dictionary.com defines 'character' as "the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing." They use the word individual; I used specific.

I think if you make the argument that your bogeyman has a distinct personality that is different from any other of his kind (if there are any more of his kind); that is to say: he's a specific individual--well, I'd buy that argument. Not sure about everyone else on here, but that's my take. Hope that helps!

Cheers!

Chupacabra- HEy mate, good to see progress on the piece. ONe thing I noticed is the crow looks a little, podgy (if that makes sense). As in kinda overwieght and rounded. I think you could balance and correct this by making it have a huge enveloping wing span.
I almost have symapthy for it because it's gesture is that of a baby bird waiting for it's mother to regurgitate food into it's mouth. Sorry if this sounds harsh but just trying to help.
Regarding the bogeyman, I think you could add some interest to his body, such as trinkets or black magic idols, or some dark ritual scarring, or tattoos.
I feel kind of bad critiquing you cos you're so much more experienced and skilled than me.

Another WiP...

Not happy with the blood at all. The left arm is funky (his left, your right). Not sure about the faces in the back... but I like the spots! Haha

Thoughts?

I really thought it wasn't who the boogie man was that was so scary, but what he can do (passing through shadows to get you! Eep!)

Great work, guys! :D I love all the cool and scary looking creature/men in this thread. A really good CHOW I must say. :)

And thank you for your comments and advise, ŋDubious?, CKLamb, NicHolS. It was very much appritiated.

Ok, I have now layed the foundation for mine. I'll call him "Zodian The Zodiac Reaver", this because those children that doesn't behave during the time when their zodiac sign is, then Zodian will stand before them at midnight and take them away. He uses a so called Astronomical clock. :P

Still have a lot to do, haven't yet done the hard strokes I was advised on him. :)

Ta guys, Senor Flamingo it is then.

@LogicINK, hmm, try defining the light source a bit more, I think you should darken the blood to a very dark red-black, with a more saturated red in shine spots with really bright glints.

@Chupacabra, looking fantastic, I love the bogeymans face, very sinister, maybe more of the smaller birds in the distance?

WIP of mine, rendering and painting like a madman to get this finished on time, crits would be appreciated:

Random Stranger - Inspired by the Plague-doctors? :P Promising WIP so far, I think I'll comment more on it later on when you have more done. :)

CarJackie - Cool Boogeyman, kinda reminds me of something that would greatly fit a childrens book somehow. I really like tha hat on him and his ability to use shadows. Nice!

LogicINK - Wow, that's a bit disturbing. s said by Random Stranger, a more defined light source would make it a lot better. Darker blood with just a bit of brighter red at the edges would maybe be nice.

Kerberos - Pretty cool facial and upper body design, I'll comment more when you show some more. :)

dwinbotp - He looks too kind to be a Boogeyman, maybe scary him a bit? :P Really nice face I gotta add.

Chupacabra - Freaking awesome! I really love the shadowing you made on the guys muslces, and the raven is just amazing.

Braintree - Nice update, I'm wondering what kind of background you gonna add. A childrens bedroom or a kitchen with a boiling pot? :P

Hey guys!

Wow wow! All the entries looks fantastic so far!

I wasn't going to enter, but after seeing everyone's effort, I can't help but at least TRY and participate!

This is my first CHOW. I hope I'll be able to finish it in time.

Thanks!

Another WIP, the black is really bothering me, but I think I'm just going to have to leave it for now, and focus in the kiddies/bait, and yes, very plague doctor/victoriana/"From Hell" inspired, with a healthy dose of Kaisers Orchestra too.

Late start again but here's mine. I tried to pull things from my childhood nightmares and from the wiki article. I went off on the Italian bogeyman who dresses in black. This guy looks like an eccentric businessman to adults but kids can see his nasty menagerie and the red on his clothes.

Here's my pre-final. After cleaning up her hands, adding some details here and there. and trying one thing out with his body I'm calling this finished. Major influences from Tim Curry's Devil in Legend, Religious Icons, and a little bit of Italian folklore.

LordM thanks for the feedback, I still don't have much time as I'd like to invest, but here's how it turned out.

I played around this for quite a bit. The Bogeyman for me has laways been about a child's vivid imagination gone terribly wild and personified as a "someone" or something. Any shape can turn into the "Bogeyman", so instead of painting him clear, I played with a hidden imagery among the trees instead.:) Great work everyone, comments soon after!

OK, I think I'm done with this one. I post it here before to see if someone have a critique to make and I'll see if I have the time to change it.

Dwinbotp - Great idea, but I reckon you don't need the text across the bottom. The image is spooky enough without it. Show, don't tell! Just my thoughts... :)

Hello all, I realise this is not strictly the place, but I have a plea for help with something, I have made a background as a separate file, and want to superimpose my image onto it, however, the white background comes through, how do I remove the white background from the background layer so it goes to that chequerboard pattern?

Thanks in advance, deadline approaching and I'm getting a bit paniced.

Aly Fell
June 14th, 2009, 04:50 PM
Make the white background a layer and select all (ctrl a) Ctrl x will then delete the white.

Aly Fell
June 14th, 2009, 04:58 PM
This is weird, page 10 won't show up. Click the link and it goes back to page 9... odd....

Edit: It does now. Some little bug with posting at the bottom of a page. Ignore me!

June 14th, 2009, 05:19 PM
Alternatively, if selecting out the white background gives you a halo, you can either set the layer to multiply and put the new background under it, or go to Select->Modify->Expand to expand your selection.

Random Stranger
June 14th, 2009, 05:29 PM
Argh, I still can't do it :( How do I make the white of the background into a layer?

Aly Fell
June 14th, 2009, 05:41 PM
In the layer menu double click the background , and it'll turn into one.

Alternatively 'Layer', 'New', 'Layer from Background'.

Random Stranger
June 14th, 2009, 05:49 PM
Double clicking it in the layer menu only opens up the blending menu thingie. and the layer>new>layer from background isn't an option in CS4 it appears, meh, late now, and I've been faffing about with this blasted thing all day, shame I couldn't get it to work properly, I'll join in on the Envoy CHOW, hopefully get it right then, dissapointed, but too tired and frustrated to sit up all night with this, sorry guys.

Aly Fell
June 14th, 2009, 05:56 PM
OK, I use CS2 but try right clicking on the background in layer menu.

Random Stranger
June 14th, 2009, 06:08 PM
Managed to get it to work, sorta, the pic is in the final burning thread, it came out really horrible with the background, but I thought I'd enter it since it was "finished" Remove it if it isn't up to standards please.

Kerberos
June 14th, 2009, 06:16 PM
Random Stranger: I have CS4, and if you double click the background layer and get the blending options, it should already be a layer. Double clicking a background image creates Layer 0. It could be that since it is saved in an alternate file you can't change it? Otherwise, 'Ctrl+A' and then 'Delete' remove the white background (or in the case of a layer remove everything on that layer.) And are you sure you don't have the Layer menu? It should be just to the right of 'File:Edit:Image.'

Random Stranger
June 14th, 2009, 06:25 PM
Thanks for all the help guys, but it looks like I won't be entering after all, having accidentally saved the final pic as two different file types at once, and subsequently it won't open in anything, will join in the new one though, I learned a lot, and mostly had fun, so I think I gained, rather then lost with this experience.

I haven't entered in quite a while (was entering in a similar contest on artorder.blogspot.com). But this topic was to interesting to miss out.

Basically it's what a bogey man could look like if the Dutch (like myself) werent so damn down to earth an had a decent bogeyman story of our own.

The idea is that it's an evil creature that hitched a ride on a VOC ship (dutch east indian trading company) from the unknowable East to Holland. Its hides out in the manyfold Dutch waterways to snatch children who stay out when it gets dark. It likes to pickle them in its huge barrel. When you notice the smell of rancid salted herring you'd better run home.

Its photoshop over a watercolour sketch

Uh, just a question to anyone about the time before the deadline. It says Deadline is Monday, at 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5). Problem is, I have a hard time understanding GMT, I only understand the time like in 14:00 or 22:00 and such, well that and in letters.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Been awhile since my first post on this topic. Here's a few WIP shots of my bogeyman.

http://www.biscuitofdoom.net/Forum/bogeyman162_wip.jpg

Should make the deadline. I'm a lot further on with it now. I did originally start colouring the piece digitally but it just didn't feel or look right to me so I decided to go for traditional black and white pen and ink instead.

If only there was still an undo button!

wip. havnt had much time to work on it this week unfortunately... still a bit iffy on the eyes and head in general... any feedback at this point would be very helpful! will post the final tonight when i get home from work.

i tried to play up the who terror/fear educing element and treated it as if its a demonic folk creature which haunts children's bedrooms. didnt reference any of the historical side this time, just went with what i pictured as a child.

Nichols- if, in the time you have left, you could add some shadows that are as dark as those eyes are bright I think you could give it a bit more depth and structural resolve. Right now everything is kind of to fuzzy, for me anyhow. I like what's going on, just needs a little bit more stress on the form.

Arthur 'Two-Sheds'- Thanks!

flow : Who is the boogeyman in yours? The alien or those little things? My guess is that you maybe submitting an old drawing (?)

I have no idea why you would say something like that. Seriously, how did you get the idea i was submitting old stuff?

Kerberos

Really too late to be changing stuff now, but I thought I'd ask people for critiques anyway. One thing I thought was funny is that although his teeth are big, it almost looks like he's the kid's friend, instead of the scary monster. And he apparently needs a towel.

Hey |flow|, relax I was just asking.
I was curious about your drawing thatīs all. I didnīt get why there was an alien and then those lttle things. Who was the boogeyman then? Was the alien? were those things?
As I couldnīt relate it with the subject I was asking if there was some other reason (like reviving an old drawing) or if I just didnīt get your idea. Thatīs all.
