http://www.astralmatrix.net/patrickdoran/background.JPG In my version of Neo-Tokyo, Jenna Bush (the future president) has already taken over Japan after using the scandalous "Video Games of Mass Destruction" war motive. After the nukes stopped dropping, the population of the entire state of Alabama was transported to Japan to rebuild an Aryan racist stronghold, free from all the ex-slaves now occuppying the original Alabama. For some, it would be paradise, but for most, it would just be a big bloated, bar filled truckstop, with crappy beer and an endless supply of homoerotic professional sports - wrestling, football etc.

This my first cityscape so don't tear into it too much. I tried using the acryllic brush in painter 8. Not sure what everyone else is using, but I think I like the other painting's brushes a lot better, whatever they are - watercolors, oils?

Thanoz
December 30th, 2003, 06:07 AM
Davi - What brushes/tools etc. are you using in Painter Photoshop? I like the coloring, it's even yet it has nice texture and belnding, I must know!!!

davi
December 30th, 2003, 06:20 AM
i haven't touched photoshop in over a year.

i used painter8, only used texture on the foreground building.

i used a custom brush but the same effect could be done with probably painter8's design marker with low opacity. I also used the scratchboard rake, which i tend to use in most all pieces lately..

Use 100% with the acrylics at first but when you want to start making your colors blind take the opacity down to like 30%(any lower and you'll get layer'd strokes). I think that's what you for more of a 'painter look'. Don't stick to using one brush either. The acrylics are honestly crap if you want to into exterme detail(unless you are drawing a huge res). I use felt pen>felt marker.

One obvious perspective error in your piece is the front of the car in the foreground. It should be following the same direction as the street's edge on the otherside of the road.

hope i helped.

Something new today. I actually tried... to a point....

I quit before I finished the water. I just don't know how to make it look real, and I didn't detail the spacelift beyond those glowy rings.

http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v19/dfunkt/306-2_copy.jpg

I think this took me about 2 hours, if I discount all the time I wasted in between work. It took me a while to get the hang of it as I have never done anything like this before, and I think if I had to do it again I could do it in 30 minutes or less.

Like your colors wednesday!

EDIT: whoops, forgot to say that I used reference for Tokyo Bay. (Yes that is actually what it looks like more or less, unless I got the wrong picture accidentally) I also used two reference pictures from google for the street/road textures.

thanks for the link dave, thats awesome - i know that in hong kong, they actually started expanding into the sea. They'd make these platforms to build tall buildings on >.<

That's not a "sky city", that's an archology. They've been kicking ideas for these around since the 60's or late 50's. I figure it's just a matter of time before cities with any sort of serious population level just sort of morph into one by necesity.

Looks like the scientists were wrong about the radioactive bugs produced by the hiroshima bombs. They have been growing undeground all these years, and are becoming restless due to global warming. Now they have surfaced, and they have decided to take neotokyo with them!

I personally dislike this one - bad use of warm/cool colours.

Bad lighting. But meh. its 4am and only my 2nd ever digital painting. so its not that bad i guess.

good work all

davi: niiice! lighting in that is exquisite dude!
dfacto: cool, i see you're playing with textures? looks sweet.
wednesday: nice. both have a great atmosphere, i like the blue/underwater one best though :)
olsen: i like the background in that. not sure about the structure in the foreground though. seems a bit out of place to me anyways.

all the best.

The residents of Neo-Tokyo love color dodge, and they demanded that I use the custom shape tool. Critique if you wish, but I take no responsibility for the will of these exotic, futuristic people.

Worst thing is: It is true. There was a cartoon with lights flashing at a frequency over a sufficient period of time for kids with epilepsy to have a seizure...

Railboy: If I indeed had to change anything it would be the sky, going up in a gradient of darker blue on the top. Besides from that absolutely nothing - love it as it is!

And keep all those awesome posts coming, people. This is indeed great fun!

Aaaaaaaaaaah! Huff huff... too tired to experiment. I wish I knew what I was doing, not enough know-how to do what I wanted. Anyhow here ya go-

Took a look at some Blade Runner and Fifth Element pics for inspiration. Based off a view from the Tokyo Tower "That Eiffel looking thing". The triangle in the middle is a graveyard.

I'm taking a pass on a landscape, but I figured I'd drop some comments. My favorite was the one by railboy. I like how the lighting works and the different colors give a sense of depth. Also, I liked the "satelite photo" image. It almost looks like the real thing. Good job!

I'm doing studies for evil clowns for the time being, hehe. What!? Can't a man have his pet projects?

Thanks davi for the link It was an interesting study.

Wednesday: Good light and colour, I like it.

Dfacto: Really curious how you did that. Like the cityscape texture.

Thrash: I like the signs, one thing I find distracting, is the thing in the middle(not the city). It´s getting a lot of my attention when I look at your sketch, yet It is too unclear what size it is and where it is in relation to the dome and the bridge/road. You wanted crit, hope it is of some help.

Sabre:I like it, because of the colours. Usually the buildings are brownish grey or something.

This is my 55th DSG (Not in a row but still...), and to celebrate I am taking a break from It to review what I´ve accomplished so far, what I need to improve and so on. Not really going anywhere, I´m just going lurk a bit more than usual.

Good stuff everyone :chug:
