Hello everyone. After lurking on the forums for quite a while I decided to stop worrying so much about embarassing myself with my sub-par art and figured that if I wanted to improve I should start posting some of my work.

Just a little background info: I'm a 21-year-old Bruneian, an animation student (with no preference to either Western or Eastern styles, good animation is good animation) specializing in 2-D. I also make comics and do illustrations.

Unfortunately I don't own a scanner, so most of the stuff here will be works done by tablet.

Well, here goes.

I always welcome advice. Thank you for your time.

Also, I'll be posting up .swf or .gif files of my animation as well, later this month.

A preview to the third page of Kabus.

I spent too much time on "How in the world should I depict the numerous deaths in that space?" but I'm fine with it now. Just going to ink and color it.

I do most of my studies on paper, hence why it doesn't get posted up, but I'll see if I can get a good enough shot with my camera. I'll get the digital sketches up too later (I'm celebrating my birthday today, 23 June!)

Also, thanks for stopping by, RedSquirrel!

Nice sketchbook. I like your comics, they definitely catch my attention and I'm intrigued by the story. Art-wise, I think your coloring and shading needs a fair amount of improvement. I think your color schemes aren't as appealing as they could be, and sometimes your light source is hard to distinguish. I also noticed that, when coloring skies, you tend to use only one shade of blue (well, you used a few shades in the first image you posted, but they weren't blended very well. I do like the clouds, though). I think it would be a good idea for you to go back to the basics and do some simple exercises. Check out the Peer Project thread, that thread has helped me :)

Your anatomy is pretty good. It seems as though you're more comfortable with male anatomy than female anatomy, just judging by the art you've posted here. Definitely do as much life drawing as possible, and check out posemaniacs.com if you haven't already.

Anyway, keep it up! I'm sure that one day you'll be a great animator, if you work really hard.

Mayu_Zane
July 16th, 2009, 04:02 PM
Thank you for your suggestions, and yes I have been checking out posemaniacs.com

Reckon I should have a look at the peer project thread... and draw more ladies. I just find males to be easier, but I suppose that's a case of deliberately avoiding working on a weak spot.

Thanks again for stopping by!

I think from looking at your comics, that abit more working from reference pictures would help.
Even if your going for a 'manga-ish' style, having the basic realistic proportions and placement of facial features down would still help you alot.

Not saying that your work is rubbish, but just trying to suggest something to make it alot stronger. You seem to have the basic underlying 'theory' down, but it just doesn't flow or feel natural enough.

Still, looking forward to you 'giving me the finger' by producing some kick arse stuff.

This is the most accurate description of my work so far. For some reason whenever I think of a pose it seems okay in my head but stiff when it comes to my eyes. Certain rules just seem to slip my mind, but I think that can be fixed with time and practice.

Still, looking forward to you 'giving me the finger' by producing some kick arse stuff.

I think you have a good start and idea of what you're aiming for - I'd personally like to see more of your sketches, be them studies or conceptuals.

For your digital stuff though, I think you need to work on your color theory a bit. Try experimenting with different color schemes in some speed-paints, ranging from high saturation to low, etc etc.... I found a good exorcise for practicing colors was to practice from nature, like flowers, creatures...etc.

So I used to do things like this: I draw and paint immediately after getting the idea. Of course, as I recently discovered that this isn't a very good methodology for hi-quality work.

What happened today-

Brain: "Whoaaaa man I'm seeing a river and stuff! Draw it! It's gonna be rad!"

Me: "Wait one second there, let me have a look."

And I painted what I was really seeing in my head.

http://i26.tinypic.com/2cgbzo6.jpg

Me: "Son. I am disappont."

of course, going to be redrawing it till i get a clear idea of what should be in it. Gonna add a bridge, safety railings for the river, going to make the river lower etc.

Normally before I paint/draw I make some guidelines and draw a thumbnail to help with keeping things where they should be.

Felt like making something without any guidelines, this is the result. Turned out a bit different and took longer than I expected (3 hours? Aaaagh). Most of that time was just spent fixing mistakes and erasing the limbs to repaint again.

Playing around with this character concept in my head, a man named Benito who delivers special post while wearing knight's armor.

I think deep down, I didn't actually believe extra practice and making real life studies, as well as researching other artists would do me any good.

Somewhere inside I thought I was already at my 'peak' and wouldn't improve any better, because of my inferiority complex.

But I think it's gone now. I really am trying my best to learn and pay attention. Still can't help but feel... 'tiny' when I look at other people's works, but now instead of wallowing in self-pity I am actually trying to figure out what makes it good.

Speaking of studies, decided not to put up the stuff in my real life sketchbook till I can get my camera working right again, or till I get a scanner. Then again, I've got a lot of pages and I suppose I won't be putting them all up since it would take a lot of time to do that, and time is something I don't have a lot of.

My own idea of what art is.

To me it's something that seems really, really difficult to do and get right (and it is!), in fact getting to work on something seems downright scary at times, with so many chances to make mistakes and be made fun of.

Yet I keep coming back anyway, because deep down I know: The only way forward is by getting to know it, and working at it till it all works together.

I want an update on this last work! I think it has potential. Keep it cartoony, but keep it soft. Try and keep that rounded feeling that all the forms have. You've got a fairly nice sense of light starting - especially on the guy's jacket. Work the lighting more, and develop this piece!

Thanks very much TASmith. Been making some big changes following the stuff going on in that pic's crits and wip thread though I might make more versions of it. I'm going to try removing the hand in the foreground (replaced by someone running) and then tilting the pic later for added effect.

Unfortunately, with what's been going on in my life recently it's been difficult for me to draw and paint again. Decided to make something simple first then try finishing things after that.

It has been quite a while since I updated this thread. A lot of things have been happening.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2wclnjd.jpg

^ will continue working on that later to fix some issues my friend pointed out

It looks good though the shining (reflecting light) might need to be a bit more prevalent or dulled depending on the feel you want to go for. Is the robot good or bad. If you dulled it it might be more easily understood. Right now he might have destroyed it but then why is he not destroying the man in front of it.
Also where is the light coming from because if the light is from the moon it does not match up. T
he chest of the robot looks a bit off kilter as well.
Also for the background destroyed buildings, what you may want to try is making them fully flat shapes for a more silhouette feel which is what I feel you are going for.
The tones of the background are a bit confusing as well since with the limited light, wouldn't the closer piles be lighter and the back buildings be darker.
The general composition is pretty strong for the piece and the clouds look good though. Good job sir.

Also, I tried a slightly different coloring method with a recent rough sketch

I keep overthinking things. I'm not sure at this point if that light source should be like that. Considering changing it from bluish-green to blue for the ocean

It's a lot easier to make things look painterly in photoshop but man, Flash is way easier to animate in for me. Regardless, going to try making a few more gifs in the near future

Making a good painting takes forever for me mostly because i keep finding mistakes and then fix them but it feels good to see it look better as time goes on. Adjusted the levels in the background buildings, felt like they were standing out too much.

Thanks Cojac.

Tried to get even looser with the gesture sketches. Tried to focus more on the movement, what the figure's doing than what it actually is.
